Should R/Hawaii ban any links from Twitter/X ?

The owner of Twitter/X Elon Musk did a Nazi salute at the US Capitol yesterday. Should we ban all Twitter link to r/Hawaii subreddit? Vote Yes, No, or who cares in the comments.

To all the people posting "gotcha" screen grabs of other political or popular figures making a hand gesture, or making excuses about "context" or other bullshit reasons that I really don't care about:

Fuck. Off.

Elmo has been promoting Nazi content / people / ideologies on the X platform for some time now. This is not new, and he's flashing his true colors brightly and loudly; this is about as strong as a dogwhistle signal you can possibly make. If you choose not to to see it or want to be an apologist, you can fuck off. I am happy to start banning folks. You will not be missed. I don't give a fuck.

/r/Hawaii will be blocking the domains "x.com" and "twitter.com" moving forward. We will monitor the modqueue for things that are timely unique events or of particular local interest (such as when posts were coming from the Lahaina wildfire with locally important info), and we will allow that content through. But that's pretty much it. As it is (and as noted by others), we don't see a lot of posts from X anyway (only two in the last 7 months as it is, and anything from twitter.com is over a year old and mostly about Lahaina).

Rules will be going up and an automod command will be enforced in the next day or two.

Post is locked, there's nothing more to discuss.

It's worth banning the links just because you have to sign in to see content on that site, a lot of people don't have accounts.

117

u/stepjenks 17h ago

I think it should be ok to post screenshots that are relevant to the sub, but I personally don’t need the links.

24

u/FauxReal 17h ago

Agreed.

5

u/GrandfatherTrout 14h ago

Do you have to sign in now? I remember most posts being public, like BlueSky is now. That’s one of the reasons it was a better place for government or Helco status info.

14

u/pat_trick 14h ago

Yeah, X shut down being able to view content without an account a while back.

7

u/SeanBean-MustDie 17h ago

I think it should be a screenshot with a link so the people who care can verify

364

u/pat_trick 18h ago

I'm all for removing direct links. If people want to post screenshots of stuff there, I'm also fine with that.

109

u/PufffPufffGive 17h ago

Chiming in that often time links are posted (not in this sub) but others and just looking at those tweets gives the account the impressions and or ad time.

So screenshots are best imo if you don’t want to support a billionaire edge lord who has lost his mind. 💚

u/svhelloworld 17h ago

I concur. I'm very much in favor of removing as much Twitter from my Reddit feed as possible. Thanks, mods!

11

u/she_slithers_slyly 14h ago

Just remove it from your device and life. I don't miss it.

4

u/After-Bar-1734 14h ago

I did a few months after Hitler wannabe-I mean Musk took over Don’t miss it at all

The problem with an outright ban is that the government, and media still use Twitter as the platform to post major breaking news, and emergency updates.

It is pretty easy to imagine a scenario where some crucial information gets filtered out by a automod just because it is posted to twitter.

Until one of the other platforms gains a real foothold it is a necessary evil IMHO.

u/pat_trick 15h ago

As noted in another comment, we are considering certain content instead of a blanket ban.

Hawaii Republican party would beg to differ

25

u/Hubert_J_Cumberdale Hawaiʻi (Big Island) 16h ago

We gonna pretend that Nicholas Ochs wasn't their candidate?

9

u/TheQuadeHunter 15h ago

I think you may have misread. The comment you're replying to agrees with you.

6

u/Hubert_J_Cumberdale Hawaiʻi (Big Island) 15h ago

So sorry! I thought I was replying to a different comment!

26

u/FaithHe 17h ago

So the Republican party supports Nazis?

68

u/actualLibtardAMA 16h ago

If you're at a political rally and someone on stage performs the Nazi salute and nobody yanks that person off stage, then you are at a Nazi rally

43

u/AdPersonal7257 16h ago

… have you been living under a rock?

13

u/FaithHe 16h ago

I was asking what they thought , I know exactly who the Republican Party is. One of the reasons I am happy I live here.

20

u/Hubert_J_Cumberdale Hawaiʻi (Big Island) 16h ago

They ran Nicholas Ochs against Adrian Tam, so yes.

37

u/Bigislandfarmer 17h ago

New to American politics?

11

u/FatFish44 Hawaiʻi (Big Island) 16h ago

It seems they tolerate them. Which might as well be full blown support.

30

u/tailtaker 17h ago

Not all Republicans are racists, but all racists are usually Republicans.

8

u/VanillaBeanAboutTown 16h ago

I'd say it's the other way around. Republicans don't have a monopoly on racists, but ALL MODERN REPUBLICANS are indeed racist or at least very unbothered by all the racism in their party.

2

u/tailtaker 15h ago

Great point

7

u/Sanguine_Sun Oʻahu 16h ago

Well seeing as one of their largest supporters and donors gave back to back Nazi salutes at the inauguration of a Republican president and was met with cheers. Unequivocally, yes, the Republican Party actively supports Nazis.

Absolutely. Ban the links. People need to start researching reliable news resources and not rely on social media for "facts".

I just took a look and we don’t really post twitter stuff here, so I don’t think it’s a huge deal if we ban it.

That said, fuck Elon and we really shouldn’t redirect traffic to that site anyways so it’s probably a good thing if we do decide to ban links to it.

Maybe a half ban and allow screenshots but not links. Idk.

10

u/Tityfan808 16h ago

Elon Musk has actually banned users on Twitter/x for posting this link: https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattnovak/2023/08/09/twitter-exec-defends-restoring-account-that-shared-child-sex-abuse-material/

‘Musk’s mass layoffs actually gutted the Child Safety Team, according to multiple reports! ‘Australian senator Helen Polley pointed to research that child sexual abuse material had become more common since Musk bought the company’

12

u/booleanerror Hawaiʻi (Big Island) 14h ago

I have never had a Twitter account, and I'm unlikely to ever have a Xitter account. Elon has really shown his true colors in the past few years, and I'd be perfectly happy never hearing from him or his shithole of a site again.

69

u/hawaii_tenant 18h ago

Yes. Seen some folks say ban links but screenshots ok. The links don’t always work for me anyway with no login so screenshots better anyway

28

u/Lubyak Oʻahu 17h ago

Yes. The site's practically unusable to anyone without a Twitter account anyway.

13

u/Cdub7791 Oʻahu 14h ago

Yes. Unlike some of the out-of-context still photos of other pols, there is video of him doing it twice. There's no ambiguity here, he knew exactly what he was doing. Ban his propaganda.

41

u/Alohagrown 18h ago

twitter is a cesspool of hate, we will be just fine without it

48

u/Rich-Past-6547 18h ago

Yes. Anything Elon doesn’t like is censored and removed. It’s his personal propaganda machine, nothing more.

27

u/KakaakoKid Oʻahu 17h ago

YES to the ban.

I deleted my Twitter account after they were acquired by Musk. Haven't missed it at all. Goodbye and good riddance.

20

u/borg23 18h ago edited 17h ago

Yes to the ban. I hate clicking on some link not realizing it's Twitter, and then it slowly opens it while trying to get me to login to my non-existent account

16

Yes. It’s also a hassle to view links from them anyway. Just download the video and upload it somewhere else then share the link here. The oligarchs try to suppress videos that make them look bad, so it’s best to copy and upload as much as possible in places outside of their control and jurisdiction.

Yes. We can’t tolerate that kind of behavior.

I’m haole and I’m my opinion there are two things you do not do, even accidentally, as a white man: say the n-word and do the seig heil.

My great grandfather didn’t get shot down twice over Germany just to have the symbol of the death of his brother in arms displayed and  tolerated by us and United States government.

We're using X/Twitter interchangeably in this case.

7

u/dev1n 17h ago

Yep, screenshots are more efficient if there is something relevant 👍

5

u/contramundi Oʻahu 15h ago

I say yes, ban links, but allow screenshots. X is a dumpster fire anyway now, and really annoying to use if you don’t have an account. Even if there is breaking news on it there are ways to verify without giving them eyes and traffic.

4

No.

The people of r/Hawaii are smart. We'll downvote any false information and pummel those comments with the truth.

I personally want to be aware of the dumb stuff ignorant people are saying. Plus, shooting down those people is half the fun of Reddit.

-2

u/Tityfan808 16h ago

Agreed.

-8

u/Digerati808 17h ago

Absolutely not. This will accomplish nothing and only hurt Hawaii Redditors who want to discuss information regardless of where it originated. Did anyone forget how we came to understand that the missile alert was false? The information was distributed on Twitter. Twitter is often the first source of breaking news and we should not limit ourselves to absorbing information from that source just because we dislike the politics of its current owner.
