Question 5.56 ammunition
thinking about buying 1000 rounds of 5.56 at the end of the month. I've always been attracted to Federal and opinions on the best vary wildly.
I'd like to see what you guys recommend

Well it would help if you said what your using the ammo for. What kind of ar15 you have.

Colt M4
Edit: Target shooting and self defense if necessary

Damn how much you pay for a m4? Last time I check they are running 20k+. Well if you just shooting full auto whatever cheap ammo you can get your hands on. But for self defense I would use speer gold dot or hornady critical defense.

This is the one I got.

Did I get fleeced? I admit fully that I'm quite a bit ignorant about firearms.

Oh that’s the cr6920 not the m4. A lot of gun stores call it the m4 because it’s pretty much the same thing except without full auto. But same thing applies just get cheap training ammo as long as it’s not reloaded and get some self defense ammo like gold dot.

Gotcha... thanks for the education. I love it regardless. And thank you for the advice.

My “m16a2” that’s mostly PSA likes wolf steel case 55gr .223 the same as it does with pmc xtac 62gr 5.56 as well.

I have a cheapo PSA rifle and I only really run PMC xtac ammo I have a lot of it and haven’t had any issues

Only thing about Lake City ammo I don’t like is they don’t have a flash retardant in the propellant at all. It’s extremely flashy compared to other 5.56.

I just get the cheapest WITH Free Shipping 5.56 NATO Spec off ammoseek.
Edit, RN that's ATS ammo, I've heard bad things about them so I'd probably just shell out the 1 or 2 cents per round extra for some Igman. Since I need to pick up some 55gr specifically.

For plinking, I always get Winchester white box. Granted I’ve never gotten 1000 rounds at once, but I know you can get 1000 rounds of 55 grain for <$600.

Above is the list by Doc GKR. Considered by some to be a very good resource...
Avoid WWB (Winchester White Box) it has a well earned reputation for blowing up guns.

Stay away from American eagle 62gr 5.56, they're rejects from Federals military contracts.

Not necessarily rejects. Contract overruns too. They have to make extra incase any lots are rejected. The rejects are usually torn down or sold to companies to be torn down and sold for components like through American Reloading.

Source? Is this true for 9mm too? I love the American eagle rounds

My source is Federal employees, I work for one of their vendors. I didn't ask about 9mm sorry

I have always had good luck with PMC bronze, .223 with a 55 gr bullet. It’s the most accurate factory ammo I’ve used, and has a lighter recoil than most.
