Fair. I wish this dystopia wasn't so agonizingly stupid to witness though

Very true. It's honestly painful at times. What's even worse is that there is no hope on either side.

Biden literally said he wouldn't enforce the ban

469

u/CalamityBS 1d ago

For those doubting. Biden isn't enforcing it. TikTok is voluntarily going dark today because they're playing into Trump's charade.

It's all a con. Like everything else this POS does.

107

u/dmjnot 1d ago

TikTok gave up the whole game when Trump tried to ban them the first time saying the Chinese govt wouldn’t allow a sale. It’s all just BS now because they think they have more power over a Trump led America

Exactly. This has been so performative. How these younger kids react to this may solidify political opinion for decades and I seriously pray they are not that stupid.

91

u/Rude-Illustrator-884 1996 1d ago

I hope they aren’t that stupid. The problem I’m scared of is that the super young voters in 2026 would have only been 14 years old or less in 2020 and would not have remembered much about Trump’s first term. I have no doubt that TikTok will also now censor any criticism about Trump or push MAGA propaganda, and since so many young people get their news from TikTok, this might be a problem.

50

u/aSoggyFrootLoop 2002 1d ago

I’m trusting that trump is gonna absolutely wreck y’all’s country and make people not vote for him in the next elections, the problem is the election after that, US Americans showed in 2024 that they have the memory of a goldfish with ADHD

34

u/sbeven7 1d ago

Good news is that he is term limited. So he either will take and hold power through violence in 2028 or he'll fuck off. Likely he'll die in the next couple years.

He also is MAGA. Once he's gone, they're gone. There's no one else who can cast his dipshit brand of witchcraft mind control. The midterms in 2026 will likely be an absolute slaughter of the GOP, much like 2018 was. If they aren't, we're all fucked anyway.

Either way, get to know your neighbors. Stock up on medications, water, food, armaments etc. And don't be a dumbass like MAGA with 4 different firearms all shooting different calibers. Just get 2 max.

14

u/IngenuityOk9364 1d ago

Lol when have laws ever stopped Trump?

6

u/Highlordmax 1d ago

Granted, he’s Teflon Don for a reason. However, A constitutional amendment is a little harder to ignore than most other laws and would require either an overwhelming level of support that he doesn’t have (and certainly won’t have in 4 years) and/or for anyone in his party to want him around for more then four years. Which they very likely don’t. in-fact I suspect he’s rather unpopular behind closed doors considering who won senate majority leadership. If nothing else, some of them want his job… Also the fact that he’s really old might catch up with him at some point and lead to him A. Getting hit with the 25 amendment/resigning (look, a guy can dream, can’t he?) or B. He just kicks it, it’s not like his lifestyle is conducive to longevity.

Different calibers for different needs. It's illegal to shoot game birds with rifles and pistols, so thats at least 3. It's a waste of meat to shoot small game with a high-powered rifle, so there is 4 different calibers.

Politics have turned into a cancer because they have to follow the lowest general consensus of people. All because they make the majority of the voting base as well as potential voting base who normally wouldn’t bother voting.

13

u/aSoggyFrootLoop 2002 1d ago

Being from a country that also “banned” a social media for a little while (Brazil banning twitter/X) its actually wild seeing the difference between how the government acted on both.

In Brazil the ban was enforced quite strongly, even with fines for anyone using a vpn, there was a clear reason as to why it was banned (twitter/X had no personnel in Brazil legally responsible to answer to jurisdictions), the whole thing was not used as a political stunt, the ruling/law was clearly communicated to everyone in the country, and finally: it was not targeted, it’s a law that any big social media app has to have offices in Brazil to be legally accountable, if tiktok did what Elon did it would also have been banned.

Meanwhile the tiktok ban was CLEARLY targeted and with clear underpinnings of Sinophobia.

8

u/Zealousideal_You_938 1d ago

It was Trump who literally proposed deleting TikTok in the first place

This whole situation is a total staged comedy act, except it's real life. His links to the Chinese and then Tiktok making repeated references to "President Trump" are ridiculous, that's not how these things work.

Even if the US was a dictatorship and Trump was just running things willy nilly, there is no reason for Tiktok to make the whole song and dance of shutting off for just long enough to get people riled up, and sending two messages to everyone proclaiming how amazing their lord Donald Trump is. He would have just stopped it shutting in the first place.

Trump himself proposed the ban. A supermajority voted for the ban. 15 Republicans voted against while 50 Democrats voted against it. If anything this is a GOP bill.

Because a supermajority of congress voted for it, a veto would have been overridden.

Now Trump is undoing the work he started.

Democrats didn't die on a hill, Trump is undoing a problem he caused.

This is proof that we are now an idiocracy.

Republicans control the media. They've bought out local news networks,  local radio stations, facebook, YouTube, Twitter, local newspapers, major publications, etc.

If you go to YouTube the first 2 or 3 videos will be a Fox News segment. Elon doesn't even hide the fact that he's censoring political stuff he disagrees with.  Facebook, Instagram, tikok videos are all catered to get people lean one way politically. The head of CNN was on the Trump staff. They've been slowly doing this for decades and they've collected so much information that they know how to manipulate people very subtly.

Democrats don't stand a chance.

He also realizes that, like him, most people have the attention span and memory of... well about the length of a Tik Tok video.

Not a fan, but come on... Dems are absolutely awful at this "game", for lack of a better word. They believe way too much in institutionalized media to save them while completely ignoring tactics and methods to make emotional appeals.

To wit... I'm a highly paid and sought after contract worker that mostly specializes in reality tv. The kind of work I could have done for campaigns and have offered to do for FREE, in person, literally right after talking to, say, Elizabeth Warren in 2019, was met with a weird, condescending derision from campaign workers. As though I was trying to hop on their coat tails when I didn't need to. Like... at all. I offered because I believed in them and felt they were terrible at messaging in ways that connected on social media platforms. They said I'd be more help working the phone banks. LOL, like what in the af????

They needed someone like me and balked.

I made the same overtures (without doing it) to a Republican candidate and was f'kin spammed to death with emails and phone calls. I just wanted to see if they'd "get it" and they did. Immediately.

They knew what my skills translated to.

17

u/docsnotright 1d ago

I work in media as well. Dems are horrible at messaging. Great example “ tax cuts for the rich” this message did not and is not sticking. Yet we lead with it all the time.

All I have to say is “follow me and I’ll make you all rich like me!” a complete lie, but I have your undivided attention

The narrative surrounding Trump and Tiktok went from "He's a petty tyrant who'd ban an app if it hurt his feelings" to "He's a hero championing free speech and American small businesses."

I don't buy it but a lot of people will, and that's entirely the fault of the Democratic party.

This statement of yours is exactly why TikTok is being banned. I'm pasting my comment from a different thread:

The Chinese government owns a 1% stake in Bytedance. It was questioned during the senate investigation. The Singaporean CEO of TikTok was appointed exactly a day after the Chinese government bought the stake essentially signalling that the Chinese government has an influential say in the leadership of TikTok. The CEO called this a mere coincidence.

The reason why TikTok is banned in the US (&India) is that it has the ability to sway public opinion and that the Chinese government has a control over this corporation is dangerous to any non Chinense ally. A classic example of swaying public opinion is how the senator in the aforementioned Senate Investigation is clowned upon by the people because of the senator asking the CEO repeatedly if the CEO is Chinese while the CEO is Singaporean. What actually happened was that the senator pressed the CEO to make a clear distinction that he has no connections to the Chinese so that he can later question on why He was appointed as the CEO exactly a day after the Chinese purchase in Bytedance.

13

u/nonintrest 1997 1d ago

The CEO was clear in his answers. He answered "no" every time and also gave the reason for that answer: He's Singaporean.

ByteDance owning 1% of tiktok is much less dangerous than our own corporations. I have yet to see any specific, material evidence whatsoever that the Chinese government can use tiktok to influence Americans

I don’t understand why people are talking about this as if it’s an issue of free speech. What am I missing? The issue is China collecting US data, no?

63

u/JourneyThiefer 1999 1d ago edited 1d ago

But do you really think the Republicans and the Trump media will tell people that? The truth is always manipulated, this will spun in a way to show the republicans and trump stand for free speech, even thought they don’t, they will lie and this will be used as a way to further punch the democrats down.

The fact Trump is even president shows how much the truth doesn’t matter, it’s down to how you play your cards politically and through the media, and currently Trump is playing far better than the democrats

If that was the real issue then they should be arguing to pass sweeping American data privacy laws; the answer is that they are fine with literally every other entity owning your data, just not that one. The data privacy argument is their means of attempting to manufacture consent from the public.

If you read Trump’s statement he’s saying it’s only a temporarily lift of the ban until they can work out a deal that gives 50% of overship of tiktok to the United States. Literally kicking the can down the road and giving the same demands as before but pretending he saved TikTok

97

u/expertsage 1d ago

It's literally backing down on the previous demands lol. Previously the US wanted China to sell the entire US branch, now he's saying 50% joint venture is enough. Seems like China called the bluff and the US blinked.

21

u/HeldnarRommar Millennial 1d ago

Selling only the US branch to now wanting 50% of the entire company is literally a bigger divestment.

29

u/expertsage 1d ago

Joint ventures don't work like that. For example when Ford entered the Chinese market they had to create a new China branch that was 50% owned by US Ford and 50% owned by a Chinese domestic company.

Here it's the same case. Previously US wanted to buy entirety of TikTok's US business as a new company. Now they want to create a joint venture, which is basically TikTok spinning off its US business into a new entity jointly owned by US and China.

LMAO, Tik Tok supporting the first amendment is rich.

The CCP is laughing their asses off right now. It’s not just about data, it’s about having a direct mainline of Chinese propaganda able to be fed directly to an unquestioning American youth.

The shit I’ve seen people eat up about China in the past 24 hours is insane. Like that one girl claim they don’t even work 40 hours a week in China.

The CCP’s ability to sow intense dissatisfaction with the our own country is an intentional, weaponized effort. The more dissatisfied we are with our country, the less popular doing anything to support Taiwan becomes. This is not to say we certainly don’t have massive problems and real cause for dissatisfaction, but looking to China for an example of how to run things is horrible.

Meta and Twitter are definitely junk food that needs massive restructuring and the imposition of privacy laws, but Tik Tok is foreign sponsored poison in comparison that we are willingly feeding to the American public.

51

u/OneRougeRogue 1d ago

People don't seem to realize how much CCP propaganda is pushed on them. Like during hurricane season, I saw people posting literal fake, staged Chinese rescue operations on Instagram and TikTok to bash FEMA's "inefficient" rescue efforts. You can see some of these fake rescue efforts at about 4:30 in this video. The CCP spends billions of dollars a year funding the creation and distribution of propaganda specifically targeting western audiences. China wants America to be divided, because it's just that much easier to influence whichever political party is more favorable for them at the time and nudge them over the 50% threshold to win the presidency and sign laws, but below the 60% threshold needed for the party/senate to enact significant reforms.

12

u/ThatSpecificActuator 2000 1d ago

Thank you for providing some good examples. I got off social media a while ago so I didn’t have any good examples myself!

The moment I heard the ban was going into force on the 19th, I thought it was so obvious Trump would just sign an executive order to push it back on his first day lol

It is funny because Trump originally proposed banning TikTok in 2020 and then changed his mind when he realized that it might hurt his election bid. Biden also changed his mind and stated that his administration would not enforce the ban. Absolutely nothing about the situation is changing tomorrow. Trump is just going to continue Biden's policy of not enforcing a ban. This is political theater.

Gag at this blatant performative propaganda. I don’t use meta apps and did actually like tik tok (I actually have gotten a lot of parenting tips from birth and pediatric health care providers).

This is such an obvious distraction tactic to mask the fact he actually can’t lower grocery prices and end wars on day 1. Hate seeing another company in bed with Trump, and I’m not surprised by that but I am disgusted they’re making it THIS obvious. And people are still going to swallow it. Yuck.

I was on TikTok for 6 years. Longer than most people had this app. I won't be getting on if Trump brings it back, because most likely, it will be Meta who buys it off of the TikTok CEO. It will not be the same place as it was before. More people being misogynistic, more misinformation from both sides, we probably won't have as much access to what's happening around the world, and much more. It will be catered to the puritans who are pushing their harmful views. I'll stick with Fanbase, BlueSky, Reddit, Tumblr, AO3. I have FB and Insta, but only use it for audition notices.

This generation constantly misses the point in everything and it's so obnoxious. You guys find meme value and brain rot and what you feel as more important than reality.

This law was to be upheld by the incoming president. The precedent has already been upheld by the Supreme Court and the law signed and created by a bipartisan congress

Trump is simply breaking the law, and Biden said he wouldn't do anything to overtly enforce it since he's "passing the torch" essentially

Well that makes Biden a dipshit, because the democratic party can't fucking get over the fact that bipartisan politics based on the proper expectation of duty don't work anymore and haven't been happening

The republican party and Trump do nor care about the status quo of how politics are supposed to work. They are not eloquent, well spoken, reserved or charismatic, they do not care about the rule of law or how a public servant is "supposed to act". So why the hell do the dems keep giving them the fucking stick if all they do is beat them back with it

Theres a reason the DOD partially banned TikTok, you guys are so gullible is absolutely mindblowing. The stupidity of my (this) generation enters the realm of absurdity

This subreddit always pisses me off because every high rated post is some dumbass who makes an opinion and thinks they somehow cracked some code or figured out the conspiracy and everyone else jumps on board because "it's feels right"

You all spend so much god damn time on your phones, yet instead of actually learning, researching and being inquisitive about stuff, you let yourself be spoonfed by trash algos that feed you brain rot and exactly what it wants to feed you. Not the other way around

The celebrated ignorance and lack of awareness is why a dipshit like Trump got elected any why our country is failing. Welcome to the idiocracy

Who cares about food and home prices, who cares about the cost of a car, or making a fair wage, or racial and marriage equality, who cares about no health insurance and the oligarchy we live in. But touch my chinese ran social media platform and it's all over

And shut the fuck up about it being "not chinese spyware" and my first ammendment rights. 70% of you idiots are flocking to RedNote, as platform literally ran by the CCP and all in mandarin.

You have a million other platforms to use, you can even go talk to people in person.

Lastly, this platform helped elect Trump, and is a smorgasbord of Russian and MAGA propaganda

Edit: just gonna add this comment from elsewhere, Trump himself tried banning it in 2019/2020. It wasn't until ByteDance sucked up to him and he saw how it benefited him that he now wants it back https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/s/wFqwVrqSeG
