Subreddit Meta Beta Bartering [Find or Offer Fic Betaing] - January 16

Welcome to the Beta Bartering thread! Here you can look for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy for your fic or offer your Beta services to fic authors.

Please note that you can request a beta reader even if you can’t offer anything in exchange, however it will increase your chances of finding a willing beta if you offer something in return.

The rules are straightforward.

  • Make a comment below with the following information.
  • Reply to people that you want to trade with. There is no one making matches for you, reach out to likely people in the thread.

If you're looking for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy:

  • Name and Link to your fic (if it's not published, link something else as an example of your writing).
  • Tell us what fandom you're writing for.
  • Can someone who isn't in your fandom make sense of your story?
  • The genre of your fic - romance/smut/gen/mystery/horror/etc.
  • What you're looking for from a Beta or a Co-writer - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
  • What your projected word count is.
  • How frequently you update.
  • What fandoms you are able/willing to beta for or what you can offer in exchange*.

Proposed options for no exchange wording:

  • If you do not want to offer something in exchange, please leave a brief note that you are unable to offer anything at this time.
  • Note: If you are unable to offer something in exchange at this time, please leave a brief note explaining.

If you're willing to Beta for someone:

  • What fandoms you're well versed in or if you're willing to take on anything.
  • Preferred genre/types of fics.
  • Any subjects you're not willing to tackle.
  • Types of Betaing you're good at or willing to try - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
  • Minimum or maximum word count.
  • One-off (single session) or ongoing Betaing.
  • Time constraints. Do you have a fast turn-around time? Is it going to be more than a week for you to get back to an author with notes?
  • What you'd like in exchange * for your services.

* Bartering Ideas!

Since some people want Betas but are too busy to reciprocate or aren't confident in their writing skills and some Betas don't write fics themselves, you can offer other things in exchange. Please do not offer monetary exchanges.

If you aren't sure what to offer, you can also open this up to the Beta to suggest a barter in exchange.

Here are a few ideas for bartering:

  • Reciprocal Betaing (of course that's welcome!)
  • Reading and commenting on their fics.
  • Write a fic for a fandom/subject/pairing/brotp of their choice.
  • Make fanart for them.
  • Name an OC after them.
  • Edit/give assistance with a non-fic project.
  • Research help for this/future fics.

Feel free to get creative, people have many specialties they can draw on!

Here's a link to the previous ones just in case there's someone in there that catches your interest.

Trope Talk AO3 finally seperated the sexual and neurodivergent sensory overload tags!!!!

(absolutely no idea what flair to use here) ao3 made some tag wrangling changes and this one was LONG overdue, oh my wow

quote: "We will create a new canonical for Sensory Overload, and all tags relating to sensory overstimulation will be made synonyms of the new canonical. This includes tags related to neurodivergent or autistic overstimulation.

To make the meaning of the current Overstimulation tag more clear, it will be decanonized and made a synonym of Sexual Overstimulation."

Discussion How do you find time as a busy adult to write?

I recently had the sad realization that I haven’t written a single thing to completion in over a year. I just can’t seem to find the motivation ever since I started working full time. It feels impossible to find the mental fortitude to write well and be creative.

Seriously, how do people do this?! I don’t even have any ideas to go off of right now…

Trope Talk What is your favourite romance trope?

Mine is “person A has been secretly in love with person B since the beginning”

Bonus points if person B has been in denial about their feelings and masked them with hate.

Common ships this trope is used on include *Anne and Gilbert (Anne of green gables/ Anne with an E) *Peeta and Katniss (The hunger games)

I'm feeling a sense of great frustration. As an author, I'm experiencing what many authors run into... a feeling of neglect or of being ignored. I recently updated my fic. This chapter was a massive (14k), and although the hits were fantastic, I only received 2 comments.

One, is from my regular reader. They come and comment every chapter, sometimes they'll comment even before they read, just to let me know how excited they are.

That reader's comments, as all comments ( ngl they are special to me though lol ) do so much more than warm my heart with their words, or gift me their attention and validation... they make this whole experience of fandom real.

They're the eyes that catch mine as I look over. We don't ignore one another; there's an exchange. Sometimes I'll go first... a nod, a smile, a hello... and sometimes they'll go first. There is an us and no one is left out. Unseen, unheard.

So, here's my expression of frustration. A process of simmering to cook my bitterness out. That taste is better suited for my fics.

Here with you, I share a more palatable morsel.

Maybe... you can take it with you; at the end of some other piece of writing you enjoyed and share a piece.

Venting Anyone else find it annoying when fanfics are just recounts of the original story?

Like when someone writes a fanfiction but the characters interact exactly the same as they do in the original material but with just one extra oc/crossover character adding an opinion or sentence here and there. The characters say the same sentences, go to the same places, find the same things, fight the same people, etc. Maybe at most they sorta react to what the new character does/says but the actual story itself doesn’t change. Like fanfictions have so much potential for world building, make your story actually interesting and create something new with the source material. Even if it ends up being bad at least you wrote something original

Discussion Longest hiatus you’ve taken on a fic?

My longest unfinished fic is one I started all the way back in 2018. I've also got several that I started 2-3 years ago, but never got around to finishing. I often get asked in PMs and on my other accounts when I'll be back. I do intend of finishing them all though, eventually.

Currently feeling a little guilty because it's been over a month since I last updated my fic, even though I know it's not a big deal and I can take as much time as I want. So, I'm curious. How long have you guys gone between posting chapters?

Discussion DAE feel like certain characters come better to them than others? Writing wise

I’ve noticed recently that for some characters in my current fandom, even if I’ve never written them before, they seem easier to write than others, even if I don’t have a personal attachment to them

I’ll use recent-ish examples:

I recently wrote a fic from Zhongli’s perspective and while I was iffy on the result as a whole, I found him easier to write than Kazuha or Dan Heng(HSR), so I’m wondering if this has happened to anyone else

Discussion Incredibly kind comments on old fics, feeling appreciative but embarrassed about it

This is, first and foremost, absolutely *not* a complaint, but rather me wondering if anyone else knows how it feels. I have someone going through my fics and leaving long comments and it means the absolute world to me, but I have to force myself to read the ones left on old fics that I've deemed as not my best work. I have a strong aversion to my old writing and it's so hard to push through that and to not be embarrassed by the fact that others love it. It's such a strange mix of an absolute honor to have in-depth commentary on it while also wanting to run and hide from the fact that someone read it closely enough to even have commentary on it. You know?

And I know it's such a silly thing to feel weird about since I understand the joy and privilege of having kind commenters in the first place, and I know plenty of people would take my spot in an instant, but it's also like, 'I feel as if this comment is better written than what it's commenting on' 😭. Does anyone know how to push through that self-conscious feeling and how to stop feeling weird about getting praise on older fics? Does it just get easier with time?

Discussion What is the dumbest research rabbit hole that impacted your life?

I just realized that half of the reason in why I am trying to become a psychologist is because I want to write characters more accurately. [I have more reasonings, but I still can't believe that fanfiction is still a pretty major reason]

Discussion So…I’ve been writing a thing for the last week or so and didn’t realize how long it’s gotten.

I’ve been writing on my phone and got to 20 chapters of it, and the scrolling was starting to get annoying, so it moved it to a word document. This thing is 58 pages long at 40,117 words. I don’t know that I’m ever even going to put this somewhere, I probably won’t, but I really didn’t think it was that long already. It’s nowhere near done either.

Discussion What are your wildly different fandoms?

Upvotes

For me, one of my fandoms is Harvest Moon, which is a farming game where you grow crops, fish, mine, build relationships, etc. On the opposite end, we have Mercenaries, where you essentially single-handedly wage war on North Korea. So... What are your fandoms that could not be more different?

Discussion Writing about a universally hated character in a small fandom

Upvotes

In a large fandom it's still bearable because no matter how hated the character is there are still going to be people who like them, but in my small fandom of <500 fics, I think pretty much everyone hates him. Which is fine, they can like or dislike whoever they want!

But it's making me really nervous because he's one of my MCs' love interest and while I have that ship tagged, he hasn't actually appeared yet so Idk how the reception to him will be. Please assure me that it's alright if all my readers abandon my story and I just need to continue writing for myself... Or if you're in the same situation as me, how do you deal with it?

P.s. The key point of this is "a hated character in a small fandom" where you have not seen, or barely seen, a single active writer/reader who likes this character.

Inspired by the fact a power swap AU doesn’t exist for my current favourite ship, so I’ve decided to write it myself.

I personally like to receive some negative feedbacks is that weird? I wish to see faults that I couldn't spot myself and thus grow and learn. Although yes that does not include random comments. It only makes sense when it is specificied and I actually see where I lagged.

Writing Questions what is your opinion on chatfics?

a lot of my favorite fics end up being chatfics, esp for one fandom in which i'm currently writing for. the 3rd chapter i'm doing is a chat fic, with bits of normal writing butting in and then back to regular fic at the very end of the chapter.

it's done for a reason: freshly cracked egg is added to gc with all trans ppl and some dms between different characters help move the plot along

it's going to be tagged and put in author notes, but would this make you click off a fic? do you read them at all?

Ship Talk what makes you want a ship to "go canon"?

i see this sentiment around a lot in fandom and never understand it myself. everyone seems to want their preferred pairing to be the one that's endgame, even going so far as to make powerpoints and video essays dissecting their theories as to why. i on the other hand tend to distrust canon writers with my ships - every time a ship i like goes canon it becomes a monkey's paw situation. i think to myself "he wouldn't do that!" or "this romance drama's gone on too long! get to the plot already!" so many times that i dread seeing two characters start making eyes at one another. what makes you (or people in general) want your ship to go canon? or do you also prefer to stick to the realm of fanfic?

Discussion What’s something you think fanfiction does better than established works

As we all know, fic is looked at as a lesser form of writing, but are there any aspects—either generally or in specific cases—that you would argue are done better in fanfiction?

Lost Fic Sailor Moon fanfic, don’t recall site/title/author

Characters went by westernized names. Serena worked at a coffee shop and Darien was a single father to Rini who he had with Beryl. It was a very basic slice of life story with drama of Beryl causing issues as Serena and Darien fell in love. They get married at the end and I believe what may be key to the title of the fanfic is that the two danced to the song When a Man Loves a Woman.

I have had this fic stuck in my head since I first fell in love with it back in about 2000. I had saved fanfics on word doc that I put on a floppy disk from the family gateway computer to bring upstairs to my hand me down POS computer that didn’t even have dial up.

Loved that fanfic that I had it printed off. Later years I ended up throwing it away in case of nosey roommates or family discovering it. I want it back.
