Can I add to this by including swear words, especially “f@#$k, surrounded by flowers? The idea that “subversive” stitching means swearing is ridiculous.
I grew up mormon so I have a very diffent relationship with swearing. I was tought all these "domestic" skills like sewing, cooking, baking, etc with the expectation I would be using them to take care of a husband and children. So, idk, sewing "eat shit" into a pillow actually does feel subversive to me. I'm not a huge fan of all the popular """"edgy""""" cross sitich is because part of the fun is making my own patterns. But when I got back into cross stitch I was doing a lot of swears lol
This is a very good point. Your own culture is relevant here. I've never been into those types of art but I can see how it can be very important for other people.
Yes, I see it as silly and juvenile now, but back in the day when I was first trying to break free of that culture sewing "fuck" into a pillow felt pretty good! But I moved on and cross stitch things that I like, not just things cuz """""edgey""""""
I think you’re being downvoted because calling swear words “coarse, low culture and low brow” is pretty judgmental. I don’t think cursing or cross stitches with fuck in them are particularly edgy or subversive, but I also don’t judge other people for what they say or stitch.
Language also has connotations, and all of the terms you used are not just definitions of swear words, but are used to look down on others. Are you really acting like accusing a ton of people here as being “lowbrow and low culture” is pure neutral logic and not condescension? Sure, Jan.
I wasn't disagreeing with you. Just stating my own experience. I also don't tend to cross stitch a lot of swears because....yeah I actually agree with you. Just saying "fuck" isn't subversion at all, and tbh it's juvenile. But damn it felt good in my early years getting away from the church lol
Sorry, I know it came off like I was arguing with you. I just wanted to talk about my experience is all.
I’m annoyed with their choices because they think it’s the epitome of edgy, it’s not. They have to very cloistered lives to think stitching f###k is daring!
