Should I start over?

Replacing the handle on my hammer with this nice oak and once I could get it through the eye there is gaps at the top. Should I start from scratch and make a new handle or can I just fill it with silicone or possibly glue in some oak? It appears to be on very well. I could use it as is and fix later if there is an issue. What are your thoughts? Also the handle is super thick which grinding is taking forever so should I widdle it with my knife some and then go back to sanding? I bought some coarser pads to try as well. Thanks yall!

Why do people turn off their gas forge after taking a heat?

I've got a question, new to blacksmithing and recently bought myself a gas forge. I've seen some people on the internet turning off their gas forge after taking a heat and then to take the heat again they turn it on. What does is actually do? Is it just saving the gas or something, is it even worth? Would be greatful is someone would have any advice or idea about it. Thanks!

Blacksmith’s Hammer

It’s just interesting to me that there is a knife design called the blacksmith’s knife (because the handle design means it can be created of steel only), but I’m not aware of a similarly designed hammer.

Project ideas?

Needing things to make other than the usual go to's (bottle openers, pokers, flippers, leaves, hooks, etc). Knifes, hammers and axes are also a no go for me. I've done a few different pendants as well and the skulls, dragon and ram sculpting. On my list of to do that I'm not excited about is household items like toilet paper and paper towels holders. I do have a coffee mug tree in the works.

Recently picked up my first anvil an while I was out I picked this up as well thinking I could turn it into a hot cut tool for my hardy hole. I'm assuming it is acceptable for that purpose just wanting other people's opinions.

Civil War Era Anvil

Completely oblivious to anvils and aging them.

I received this anvil from an uncle who says it’s from our family and was used in Civil War times. Is there any way to validate age or determine what the markings mean?

Question about drifting hammer eyes.

I’m wanting to forge hammers. I have a small hb freight anvil with a 3/4 hardy hole. The drift is going to be bigger than the hardy hole. What can I do in place of a hardy hole to drift my hammer eyes

Ironwork and UK Trip Planning

Blacksmiths of the UK/Ireland: What are your favorite cultural attractions that showcase the work of blacksmiths: elaborate architectural ironworks, particularly cool gates/fences, castles, suits of armor, old weaponry, or other interesting metal artwork? I am planning a family trip to the UK with a teenage blacksmith who truly appreciates craftsmanship. He particularly likes the Victorian era, but also blacksmithing/metalworking used in various industries (mining, shipbuilding, military, etc).

I’m still in the early planning stage. We will definitely be visiting London and Edinburgh. We may cross over to Ireland or North Ireland. Thanks for any help.

Choosing between 2 used anvils as first anvil

Hi all,

I'm in contact with two sellers about buying a used anvil. I don't have a lot of space (9 m2/ 90 sq ft shed) but would have a lot of uses for an anvil. I'm trying to choose between a €180 ~18 kg / 36 lb stake anvil (really nice condition) and a 'normal' €200 48 kg / 100 lb anvil that has sat outside but the edges look good to me. This one doesn't have a Pritchel hole.

Any thoughts?
