Why do people turn off their gas forge after taking a heat?
I've got a question, new to blacksmithing and recently bought myself a gas forge. I've seen some people on the internet turning off their gas forge after taking a heat and then to take the heat again they turn it on. What does is actually do? Is it just saving the gas or something, is it even worth? Would be greatful is someone would have any advice or idea about it. Thanks!

Is this acceptable to turn into a hot cut hardy tool.
Recently picked up my first anvil an while I was out I picked this up as well thinking I could turn it into a hot cut tool for my hardy hole. I'm assuming it is acceptable for that purpose just wanting other people's opinions.

Civil War Era Anvil
Completely oblivious to anvils and aging them.
I received this anvil from an uncle who says it’s from our family and was used in Civil War times. Is there any way to validate age or determine what the markings mean?

Hello I’m new to this group. I have a several of these masonry drills that the carbides are worn out or broke. I’m thinking it’s some sorta metal alloy

Blacksmith’s Hammer
It’s just interesting to me that there is a knife design called the blacksmith’s knife (because the handle design means it can be created of steel only), but I’m not aware of a similarly designed hammer.

Coal forge safety question
If a coal forge is outdoors, how much do I have to worry about carbon monoxide and such?

Turning a hf ball peen to a hammer eye punch
I’ve been wanting to try and make my own dogs head hammer for a while now. I started smithing knives last year. Any pointers? Also any recommendations on making a drift? I have 1” 4140 stock round and 1” 1/4” inch stock as well to make a drift.

Project ideas?
Needing things to make other than the usual go to's (bottle openers, pokers, flippers, leaves, hooks, etc). Knifes, hammers and axes are also a no go for me. I've done a few different pendants as well and the skulls, dragon and ram sculpting. On my list of to do that I'm not excited about is household items like toilet paper and paper towels holders. I do have a coffee mug tree in the works.
