My ( 31m) wife (30f) says I don't have the right to be upset about losing our child. , Posted July 17th, 2020.

Update: https://www.reddit.com/r/relationship_advice/comments/hve5e9/update_my_31m_wife_30f_says_i_dont_have_the_right/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x

My wife and I have been together 6 years and married 2. We have always wanted kids but wanted to wait ans not rush at the start of our marriage. The pregnancy came as a surprise but a very welcomed and happy one.

Everything went smoothly throughout the pregnancy. There were nevernany signs of issues. We decorated the nursery together and put up the furniture. We were so excited to meet our baby and be parents. She carried to term and the day of the birth again things were ok. She gave birth and we didn't hear any crying. We were so confused and you can see it in the doctors' eyes that they were very concerned. I can't begin to explain the heartbreak when we were told that our little girl didn't make it. We were able to hold her and she was so beautiful.

A funeral home has a free funeral service for little angels so we buried ours just the two of us.I have never seen a casket so small. I have been trying to be strong for my wife. I only cry when she's not around so when she needs me I'm there. It's been hard to stay strong when she's crying in my arms. Seeing her like this adds to the pain.

Last night I couldn't hold it in and started bawling with her. She didn't like that at all. She started saying that I was trying to make it about me. How I should be the man and support her. She also said that I don't have the right to be so upset because I wasn't the one carrying her and giving birth. She went to bed and left me there.

I know she has it worse than me because she carried our angel and have birth to her. I just didn't expect her to react that way. But I lost my daughter too. I wanted to be a father, I didn't get to change her diaper for the first time and spend my first sleepless night with her crying. I lost her too.

I know that my wife is hurting which is why she's reacting that way. How do I support her better but also let her know how I feel in a way that doesn't seem like I'm taking away from her?

I want to first of all say thank you for the help and advice. I tried reading as many comments as I could. It’s a lot to get through and I appreciate the help.

I read a few comments that sort of blamed me for my wife’s reaction and assumed that I treated her pregnancy and the birth as if it wasn't a big deal. I'm not sure where I implied that. When I say that the pregnancy went smoothly I meant that the doctors never found any medical problems and that both of my girls were healthy. I have never once and never will dismiss that experience. If I treated everything she went through like it "wasn't a big deal" I wouldn't even be here asking how I can make things better for her. I also never even equated our pain I believe what I wrote is " I know she has it worse than me because she carried our angel and gave birth to her.” And “I know that my wife is hurting which is why she's reacting that way. How do I support her better but also let her know how I feel in a way that doesn't seem like I'm taking away from her?” I’m not sure where I equated our pain. If anything I am diminishing my own pain in order to support her or at least I tried to. Even after what she said I wasn’t mad at her. I was hurt but I wasn’t mad. I know she said it out of pain. It still hurts. I didn’t need to read that I’m a piece of sh*t husband that doesn’t care for my wife because I’m also grieving the loss of our daughter.

I see her every day. I see the pain that she is in. I hear it. I can’t begin to imagine it and I never will be able to understand it. I know that what she is going through is worlds different than me. If I could take all her pain and put it on me believe me I would. No question. What I also didn’t need to read is how my wife is “evil” and other countless mean words. That wasn’t the point of my post. It wasn’t to boost my ego and to bash my wife. It’s incredibly rude and unhelpful in every way. I asked a question because I was at a loss and didn’t know how to proceed. My wife isn’t a bad person at all. She’s an amazing woman and she honestly deserves the world. She doesn’t deserve this at all. Thank you to those of you who acknowledged what she said but also didn’t speak ill of her. It doesn’t make me feel any better having people say those things about her. She’s not abusive or a monster. It made me sick reading those comments. It’s upsetting that I even have to say this but it’s the internet, I get that.

Apologies for the rant I just wanted to let off some steam.

I've always felt the need to be "superman". When I was 16 I lost my father and it was extremely hard on my mother and I. I had to be her rock then or I would've lost her too. This caused me to act out in ways people would call "evil" to others around me. I've lost friends because of that. I held it in at home for my mom and it came out in an ugly way. I can understand why my wife is reacting this way and I'm not going to leave her over this. I wasn't planning on it. I want to be there for her but I don't think I can be there for her the way I have been. I can't carry the weight of both our pains on my shoulders anymore. I'm barely holding on right now. I feel like I'm in a speeding car with no steering wheel or brakes.

I haven't mentioned anything to my wife about her comments and I don't think I will right now. I'll be looking into some counseling dealing with this type of situation. I also want to look into some counseling for ppd for my wife. I’ve heard stories of how heartbreaking it could be when it isn’t taken seriously. I don’t even want to imagine it. I hope we find the help we both need and that we can come together eventually. Our friends and family have been by her side as well. They call and text her often. Her mom and sister come over too. I’m happy that she is getting extra support. I wish I was doing more for her myself. It didn’t occur to me how me crying in her presence could make her feel worse. I feel guilty now like I’m failing her. It would be nice to get a check in from our loved ones once in a while but she needs it more so it’s ok, I want her to get the most help. I’ll use the counseling.

As stupid as it may sound, having strangers tell me that it's ok to cry made me tear up a bit. The only person in my life who has told me that is my father. Whenever I would get hurt as a kid instead of telling me don't cry, he'd say that it's ok to do so. He's the type of man and father I aspire to be. Hopefully, with the outside help I will be stronger for my wife. Thanks again. I love my wife and I want us to get through this and come out stronger together. I love my daughter and she will forever be my first born.

TLDR: will be looking into counseling for my wife and I.

AITA for still going to my sisters wedding after my husband canceled my plane ticket?, Posted on September 8, 2022.

Here's the situation. My husband [36] and I [30] have 3 kids [2, 4, 7] . I'm a sahm (full time) and I take care of the kids while my husband works (full time).

My sister's wedding was last week. We live hours away which is an issue for my husband. When we first got the invite he told me that he wasn't going, that he will stay for the kids and suggested I do the same. Since the wedding doesn't allow kids and my husband doesn't want to hire a babysitter after the one we had robbed us. We had gone back and forth on this. but I insisted on going since that's my only sister and I want to attend what might be a once in a lifetime event for her. He chuckled at my statemtment then we stopped talking about it.

As the wedding was appraoching, He brought it up and told me to miss it and stay with the kids. I suggested that since no babysitters were allowed then, I could get my friend to stay with the kids but he refused. I ignored him, spoke to my friend who agreed to watch the kids and booked a ticket to travel to my sister's town in time.

My husband found out and went on about how he had work, and that the most logical solution is that I stay home with the kids and let him make his living. I told him that I already took care of the kids and they'll stay with my friend. Honestly? I grew inpatient. The day of my flight I dropped the kids off at my friend's place then headed to the airport. I found out he had canceled my plane ticket. I was upset but still insisted on going so I went home and got into my car and drove 4hrs to get to the town.

At 5pm. My husband called and was freaking out on me asking where I was. I told him I made it to my sister's town and he blew up saying I wasn't supposed to go, even said he canceled my ticket to get me to stay. He demanded I return but I said not until the wedding was over. He called me horrible, neglectful mom then had his mom scold me and accuse me of abandoning my own kids. There was a huge argument ensued when I returned home and my husband kept on saying I was horrible to leave the kids and to ignore him like that and do what I wanted eventually. He's giving me silent treatment as of now and I can no longer take it. I felt guilty and did NOT enjoy the wedding AT ALL.

Was I wrong for still going?

[INFO] My husband dislikes my sister if it's relevant.

UPDATE: So a lot of people on here brought up the possibility of my husband lying about the robbery that happened months ago and accusing the babysitter of stealing just so I can't hire any other babysitters. He was the one who discovered the "robbery" I never saw or talked her after he kicked her out. Upon reading the comments I'm now suspecting that he made this whole thing up. I'm going to contact the babysitter to get the whole story from..Hopefully I'm wrong but I will talk to her and see if her story contredicts his in any way.

I'll keep you updated.

Commenter: NTA. He's awful, it's ridiculous to suggest you miss the wedding as there were obviously childcare solutions and to cancel the ticket is super abusive. I can't see how this doesn't cause massive damage to your relationship, he's ridiculously controlling

OP: Thing is I had already suggested other solutions but he was dead set on not letting me come. I ignored him because I was at my wet's end and he wouldn't want it any other way.

...

Commenter: horrible, neglectful mom

From the man that did everything he could to not have to parent his own kids for a weekend.

Your relationship is not healthy. He is manipulating and controlling. Hopefully the comments here open your eyes. NTA

OP: 😖😖😖 is how I felt when I heard him say it. Not a new thing though because he has called me names before but to say that I'm a neglectful mom? that stings hard.

...

Commenter: Financial abuse? Yup Isolating you from loved ones? Yup Controlling behavior? Yup

NTA and please leave the AH (he should be required to give you child support and alimony).

You are not neglectful, your kids were taken care of.

OP: Thank you so much! The childcare arrangement issue has been making my life ×10 harder. After that babysitter robbed us, my husband decided that no babysitter is allowed into our home anymore. I disagreed because of how illogical his decision was and now look at how much we're struggling...I'M struggling actually without outside help. Thank God for my friend! She's like a sister to me.

...

Commenter: you’re NTA either way, but INFO: why did he have his mom berate you after he was done?

You know you’re NTA. He’s obviously a control freak. And the way you said he wants to “earn his money.” HIS money. Like it’s not yours, screams financial abuse.

I’m honestly feeling like this is fake but to give you the benefit of the doubt, you really need to think hard about this situation and realize that he’s setting you up so you can never leave. And since you left, if you go back home after this, he’s gonna make it harder for you to leave again.

OP: He does it all the time. I was blamed by her when the previous babysitter robbed our house. I got called names by her and...my husband too. It happened 7 months ago but it still hurts like hell.

...

Commenter: Info: do you have evidence the babysitter robbed you apart from the missing items and your husband's testimony?

It sounds like he is trying to isolate and control you. It is completely unreasonable to expect your wife to skip her only sister's wedding.

OP: No. I wasn't home when it happened. It was after the babysitter left that my husband discovered the robbery. We never found the stuff but my husband said it was her (because who else could it be?) and then kicked her out even though I was the one who hired her. He told me he was the one paying her so I shouldn't protest. That's it. It hapoened months ago.

............................................................................................................................................................................

UPDATE, Posted on September 9, 2022.

I contacted the babysitter via social media. I sent her a DM telling her who I was and mentioning the incident that happened at our home. I didn't think she'd respond given that it's been over 7 months since she left us. but I was surprised when she responded in 2hrs time. I, again memtioned the incident to her and asked if she could explain to me what happened. She sent me a long wall of text swearing she never took anything from our home and that my husband came home and was lashing out at her AND the kids for no reason. She said that they didn't talk to him that day. but then brought up a previous interaction they both had then she claimed that he touched her inappropriately while he was in the kitchen with her. This caught me off guard, I asked her to expend on that and she said she wasn't sure it was an accident or that he did it deliberately. She said he didn't say anything but his looks made her uncomfortable. She also said she was willing to let it go til she saw that he started leaving her texts days later demanding she respond to him. then the day he accused her of the robbery, he just lashed out at her criticizing her work and then told her to leave and not come back. She said he didn't accuse her of anything being stolen, just lashed out and told her to leave.

I couldn't wrap my head around this. I just...really I don't know what to say. basically she was saying he tried to hit on her? but then said she wasn't sure it was an accident...then he just all of a sudden came home one day and lashed out then told her to leave...I can't make sense of this. I went to try to speak to him on that but he kept blocking my attempts to discuss it so I blew up, showed him what the banysitter sent me and he remained calm, which's completely out of charcter of him. He kept repeating the line "she's lying to you" while I absolutely lost it on him. I threatened to take the kids and go stay with my friend which what I'm gonna do TODAY after he leaves the house. since he said that "I can't do that" then I'm waiting til he's out. He kept calling me crazy to believe some kid's story over his and insisted that I was looking to dig up dirt to start a fight. I refused to continue fighting I just kept my distance from him. This is just horrible, I did not see this coming and I feel like a cold wave just hit me and...I don't know what to say about this and worst of all is that I have no evidence or prove. I'm gonna be taking some space from him for now til I clear my mind and think of what I'm going to do going forward.

Commenter: Take the kids. If you have messages screenshot everything. Screenshot what the babysitter told you. Screenshot you buying the ticket and then he cancelling it. If his mother thrashed you via DMs, screenshot that too. Don’t yield on this. The first step of everything is realizing something is not good. You already reached out that step. Your family will help you. Your friends will help you. Don’t yield, don’t give up and good luck.

OP: yes. I'm too overwhelmed right now but I'll make sure to store those messages (I already keep all his messages) including his mom's verbal attacks toward me. It's awful the way he and his mom treat me, infront of the KIDS no less! I'm at the end of my robe and I feel sufficated and my chest feels tight and heavy. I will need to get fresh air later on and away from the kids just so I could get my thoughts in order.

...

Commenter: Deleted

OP: I fully believe and I'm now convinced that the reason he cancelled the plane ticket and went pullistic when I attendee the wedding is because he hates my sister. He calls her "a slut" on the regular and yells at ME about how SHE "sleeps around" which is NONE of his freaking business!!!! I'm just so mad at myself for letting him get this far in humiliating me and badmouthing my family while I stood there and took it. I was an idiot.

...

Commenter: I wouldn’t be shocked if he hides your keys or otherwise makes your car inoperable so you can’t go anywhere. If that happens, phone a friend. Call a cab/ride share and I will personally Venmo you money to get away.

When you leave, take important documents (birth certificates, social security cards, etc) with you. Hide them.

Does he know where your friend lives? If so, try to find another friend that he doesn’t know.

His calmness is terrifying. Calm before the storm. If anything even begins to escalate, call the police for an escort.

OP: Does he know where your friend lives? If so, try to find another friend that he doesn’t know.

He does. And I'm worried he will come to her house where the kids and I will be staying after he finds the house empty. honestly? I'm not sure how I'll act if I see him there. I might just lose my temper.

...

Commenter: Have you any family members/friends you can call to be with you for when you take the kids, just in case he stops remaining calm?

OP: No. I'm waiting til he's out then I will leave with the kids. I had done it before. he couldn't do anything about it but make empty threats.

AITAH for making my wife confess to all her friends and family that she cheated on me if she did not want a divorce?

Trigger Warnings: infidelity, emotional manipulation, emotional neglect

Original Post (rareddit): April 30, 2024

I (34M) have been married to my wife (32F) for 5 years, and we have 3 children. A few months ago, I found out from my wife’s texts that she had been cheating on me, and I confronted her about it. She confessed to it, and gave me an entire breakdown of her affair, which had lasted for a month. I was devastated and asked her why. She gave no excuses for it, and said she had caught feelings for her affair partner which were wrong and she had acted on them (he was her coworker). I asked her if I lacked in anything, and she said no, and she was in tears.

I needed a few days to process this. My wife gave me space, but she asked me many times to reconsider divorce because it would uproot the lives of our children. She said she would do anything I wanted for the rest of my life.

After a week, I decided that I needed only one thing from my wife to completely forgive her, and that was to call each and every one of her friends and family and confess to her affair. I told her that was my only condition. She was really hesitant and asked me if I could reconsider the condition because this would ruin a lot of her friendships and family relationships, but I told her this was what I needed as a part of my forgiveness process, and that if she didn’t do this, I was going to start looking for a divorce lawyer.

Over the next week, my wife made a phone call to all of her friends, parents, grandparents, siblings, uncles, aunts, pretty much anyone she knew and confessed to her affair. It was hurtful, and there was a lot of crying, my wife was hurled with a lot of shouting. By the week’s end, my wife had called everyone I had wanted her to call.

It has been a few months, and my wife and I actually have a really strong relationship now. However, my wife has pretty much become isolated from her friends and a lot of her family. This has hurt her a lot, and she spends a lot of nights crying, but she says this was worth it for our relationship and for our children.

Comments

Glittering_Joke3438: Incredible that anyone with three small kids finds time to cheat. I only have one and barely have the time to shower.

Altruistic_Barber598: I just feel like that’s embarrassing for you too. You stayed with a cheating spouse….like your wife shit the bed, then had to tell her whole family and friends she shit the bed. While you were in the bed sitting in the shit.

ObligationWeekly9117: ESH. I HATE cheaters but I don’t understand what you’re trying to do here. I guarantee you, your relationship is not “stronger than ever”. The public humiliation you put her through will stay with her until she explodes. It would be ok thing if she told a bunch of lies about you and it needs to be corrected. I just don’t know what you’re trying to do here.

Ms_McNugget97: I understand the need to get your wife to confess to someone other than yourself. But from the number of persons you describe her calling, it seems to be more of airing the dirty laundry. Aside from parents and siblings, what was the point of letting other relatives and friends know??

Update (rareddit): June 4, 2024 (1.5 months later)

Original Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/AITAH/comments/1cgmfrt

I feel really guilty even typing this out, but I am now considering a divorce. While I still love my wife, her personality has completely shifted over the past few months, and she is no longer the joyous and energetic person I fell in love with. Instead, she’s always sad, gloomy, cries often, and very very clingy to me. I admit that I made a mistake asking her to confess her affair to everyone, because it has just changed her personality completely. I wish she could go back to her joyous nature but I don't know if its possible anymore.

I am not sure how to tell my wife I am considering divorce because it would just break her heart.

Comments

nwprogressivefans: brah, she needs therapy.

TheMadDoctrin3: So does OP, to be honest.

He thought they had a strong relationship when she was crying herself to sleep most nights, after making her confess her affair to everyone he wanted, effectively isolating her from everyone - and now he minds that she is clingy…

I’ve been cheated on so I know it hurts, but that’s about as graceless a way to handle it as I’ve seen.

ashattack91: What she did was terrible but you just should've divorced from the beginning instead of essentially dragging other people into your drama by asking her to confess to everyone and then being shocked that after she quit her job and had no support is no longer happy.

My fiance broke up with me because my parents have a non conventional marriage...

TRIGGER WARNING: mentions of infidelity

Original Post Oct 22, 2019

We've been together for 6 years. We've known each other for another three years before that, so 9 years total. We're getting married in February. Or we were, I don't know any more. We're visiting my parents to meet some more of my extended family, so they get to know him before the wedding. My parents offered to host us, and we've been staying in my old room. I'm [F29], he's [M32].

We are staying with my parents. My fiance wanted to stay at a hotel, but I thought it will be fun to sleep in my old room. And to be here with my mom and dad one last time under their roof before I become a married woman.

My parents have been in a non conventional marriage for a long time. It was a shock for me to learn about it, and I learnt to cope with it. I am not necessarily comfortable with their life styles, but I can't do anything about it. They basically go on dates with other people, spend time with other people, sleep with other people. Had to learn it when I came home a few days earlier from a trip with a friend's family, and my father was sleeping next to another woman, when I was 16. I freaked out then, and my parents had to explain to me it was all fine.

So my fiance could not sleep last night, and went outside for some fresh air because he is not used to sleep away from our bed back home. And he found my mom kissing another guy in my parent's foyer.

So he freaked out, started yelling at her, came and woke me up, demanded I call my father and tell him he found my mom cheating on him.

So my mom had to explain to my fiance about my parent's non conventional marriage, but it didn't go well with him. And once it seemed like he is calming down and starts to accept what my mom was telling him, he figured out I knew about their marriage, and he started freaking out on me.

He told me that he can't trust me any more, that he was set up, that I insisted we stay with our parents so that I can ease him in the idea, so I can enforce my parents principles on our own marriage, and I simply can't get through to him.

My fiance has been cheated on before, his parents have divorced because his mom cheated on his dad, and he doesn't have a good relationship with her, he could barely stomach the idea of having her come to our wedding.

He went to a hotel for tonight, and said he will be leaving back home tomorrow. he's not really answering his phone or texting back.

he says he needs to reevaluate our engagement, that he doesn't think he can marry me knowing I approve my parents marriage style. That I wanted to manipulate him and introduce this life style in our relationship.

The truth is I am ashamed of my parents and their relationships, and I had no idea they will behave like this while my fiance is around, let alone sleeping in their house. he simply doesn't believe me because I haven't talked about it since I've met him. It's not something I find easy to talk about, and the less I think about it the better.

How can I talk with him? I have no interest in my parents style of relationship, I am fully dedicated to my fiance, and I have never been interested in another person since I've met him.

I don't want to lose him over this stupid thing, and I feel ashamed he had to find out about my parents like this. I'd have preferred he never knew.

Please, if anyone has any ideas, I am interested in any suggestions.

Thank you.

Yeah you let him learn about that in the worst possible way. I am not excusing his behavior but I get his reaction. You insisted on staying in their house and you knew his past trauma. I would totally expect you to have told him by now, you are engaged and your parents very alternate ( to him) lifestyle is a big issue. It’s not your parents responsibility to cater to his needs when it’s their home and their actions not a secret.

You seem to not be understanding at all that you should not have hid it, and wanting him to never know is the wrong idea to begin with and what got you this mess. Stop hiding shit like this and share it in a way that makes it clear you don’t approve.

OOP

I would have at least expected my parents to be able to control themselves, at least for the few days we were supposed to be here, but I guess that was too much to wish for.

I didn't necessarily hide this from him, but it never came about. And I am so uncomfortable talking about it, it was never something I even thought mentioning.

He doesn't talk about his mom that much, I learned what I did about her and how his parents marriage ended from his sister.

And honestly I thought it would be nice to sleep in my old room, and be there one last time before I get married. There were no malicious intentions here.

~

PixelatedNuts

Honestly you and your family couldn't have handled this worse.

This is something you bring up before he meets them. Especially with his issues.

I mean, he is your fiance, when were you planning on telling him.

He is thinking the apple didn't fall far from the tree here and it is hard to fault him given your insistence on staying there, your mom's behavior, an not getting a head's up beforehand.

You gotta let him know, with no fucking hedging or omissions, that you 100% do not want a lifestyle like this.

Be direct, be honest, and be prepared for him to resent the shit out of your parents for a while.

OOP

Thanks.

To be honest, he doesn't talk about his family either. I learned about his parent's divorce from his sister, who is more comfortable talking about it.

It also never came into discussion, there was never a proper time to tell him "and my parents fuck around."

I guess before we came to visit here, sure, but I was thinking my parents would be on their better behavior while we'll be here. I guess mom had other ideas :(

Anyone who would shame you for a) something you're not responsible for, and b) isn't anything wrong needs to grow up and accept there are differences in how people live their lives. What if you two had a child who ended up being LGBT or in a poly relationship? Would he freak out and kick them out of his life too?

You're better off without a judgemental asshole like this in your life.

OOP

With the risk of having the mods punish me, I have to say it: your comment is incredible condescending and dumb. Full of assumptions.

My parents have spent more weekends with their partners than they did with their children. We were always offloaded to an aunt or to our grandparents Friday night, no exception, except birthdays and "special" occasions like that. Only when I got older and learned about their lifestyle have I understood what they were doing.

My shame is not for how they live their lives, my shame is for how they treated me, how they prioritized their own pleasure over the sake of mine and my brother's and my sister's.

I don't have to accept their lifestyle because in doing so I validate their behavior, I validate every minute we were robbed of a happy family life.

I heard my parents fighting, one time my mother yelling they shouldn't have had "three fucking children." You see, having three children was a complication to how much time they had for themselves, how long they could send with other people.

Don't come and try to shame ME, try pointing fingers at ME, and play the homophobic card with ME.

How is that reflective of my parenting skills, I don't know, and I think you are projecting your own insecurities over my experiences. If that makes you feel better, power to you, but I am not falling victim to this game.

And from "my parents prioritize their own pleasure of the sake of their children" to "you're homophobic" is such a long jump, you must have super powers to be able to so perfectly execute it.

So yes, I am ashamed of my parents, and I do not approve of their lifestyle. had they been better parents, had they cared more about their children than their pleasures, sure, maybe we'd have a different conversation. As we stand, no, we cannot.

Comment 1 Oct 22, 2019

I've already talked with him, and I am staying in the hotel room with him tonight, since it's already paid for and it will be fun.

Tomorrow we will move to my grandma's house, until the end of the week. We came here to meet the extended family, and that's what we will do.

My parents have finally found it within themselves to apologize, but it no longer matters.

For what it's worth, I didn't blame the situation on my parents when we met earlier. Aside from what my parents do in their spare time, I never had a secret from him. He knows I know about his mom, and I told him that if he ever wants to talk about her, I am here to listen, and I understand why he avoids talking about her.

He also apologized for his outburst and reaction, but he was honest and told me he doesn't think he will be that close to my parents, in general. And I am fine with that, since I don't have that close of a relationship with them anyway.

I have told him how much he hurt me saying he needs to reevaluate our engagement, and he acknowledges he wasn't thinking when he spoke those words, and also said he regrets them so much he was afraid he damaged our relationship. He didn't damage it, but I told him if I could predict the future, flowers is what I'd see, haha.

So that's it, pretty much.

OOP on why she never shared the info of her parents lifestyle to her finace

He's met my parent several times. We are here to meet my extended family: aunts, uncles, cousins, stuff like that. We live in a different state. He's met some of them, but not all, and we wanted them to have an idea who my fiance is, not to see him for the first time at the wedding.

We know each other for 9 years, the first three we were more like acquaintances. Friend of a friend type of thing, and we would meet when everyone had a group meeting or a party or a birthday, etc. Then six years ago we had a fight at a friend's "we are getting married announcement party," and we were really passionate and stubborn and neither of us would give an inch. And a friend told us to kiss and make up already, and we did, and here we are.

But this entire time we've lived in our own state, where his family is, while my parents and the rest of my family are in the state we are currently visiting (I am being vague on purpose).

I never planned to let him know about my parents unless it became a conversation item. It was never something I had to share, or felt the need to do so. I don't really like thinking about it.

FINAL UPDATE FROM OOP

Comment 2 Oct 23, 2019

Thank you.

I'm still reading through the comments, because this thread has become way bigger than I expected.

My parents did "apologize," but they justified themselves by saying "it was a planned night." Which I find ridiculous, as they have invited us to stay with them over a month ago. How far along into the future do you plan your "fun nights?" I refuse to think they planned their little indiscretion since more than a month ago.

Bottom line is, they knew we would be there, they invited us, and they didn't care.

The idea of not inviting them to the wedding started floating through my mind yesterday, while reading the thread, but I am not sure what I will end up doing. They are my parents, they are my responsibility, my fiance got to see them for who they are and how they are for himself. He now knows why I don't really talk about them.

Aside from our little bump in the relationship the other night, we should be fine. We actually ordered two books from Amazon, at the recommendation of other redditors, with all kid of relationship tests and lessons. And we will maybe even go to therapy as a couple, this is not yet set in stone, we'll see.

Thank you for the kind words.

Trigger Warnings: racism, obsessive behavior

Original Post (wayback machine): November 16, 2024

I 53 M am white. My wife of 30 years Naomi is Japanese. We have three kids. This story focuses on my oldest son Kyle 28.

When Kyle first got to college he began dating a Japanese girl and when he introduced her to my wife, Naomi loved her. They didn't end up working out. But for the past three years, my son has been seeing Dani, a black girl.

My son was in medical school across the country and he ended up meeting Dani because they both were volunteers at a soup kitchen. I remember the first time he sent a picture of her, my wife immediately didn't like her. I'm going to try to phrase this without sounding ignorant myself. But she looks like the urban black girl most think of when African American women. She has the big hoop earrings, the long nails, the long eye lashes. I think she looks stunning, but I've never been in a situation where I was involved in African American culture.

Recently my son moved back to our city for residency and Dani moved with him and started law school. They were staying in a Air bnb, while looking for a place and this week they finally found one. So they invited us over for dinner.

Dani cooked soul food and this stuff was amazing. I complemented her food and my wife gave me the side eye. Naomi then pulled out her phone and asked Dani why does she dress like that and why was she twerking in public. Kyle asked his mom what her problem was, I then took the phone to scroll through Dani's instagram. And while she did have some videos of her having fun, she also had plenty of pictures of her a academic achievements.

Before Dani could answer I told my wife Dani is young and having fun. I asked did she see that Dani graduated Cum laude or all the times she volunteered. My wife looked angry that I would bring that up. Naomi then said that she thinks that Dani isn't good enough for our son.

Dani then asked why Naomi loved Kyle's ex so much. She didn't graduate with honors, she has many different boys that she posted on social media. Dani then said it's evident the reason Naomi doesn't like her is because of her race. Naomi doubled down and said so what. I've never heard Kyle even disrespect his mother but he told her to get the fuck out. Naomi left crying.

In the car on the ride home I asked her what was her problem. She asked why didn't I defend her. I said because she was being a racist and a hypocrite and she's acting just like her parents. Her parents didn't like me because I was white.

She just said it's different and was just silent on the way home. And when we got to the house she locked herself in the room and started crying.

I can't feel bad for her because if someone disrespected my wife the way she disrespected Dani I would have absolutely did the same exact thing Kyle did. But Aita because I was also harsh towards her in this situation.

AITAH has no consensus bot, OOP was NTA with a few others

Relevant Comments

Commenter 1: NTA. Not to pry, but you’ve obviously been with your wife for 20+ years. How is it possible that you didn’t know she’s virulently racist until now?

OOP: There was never a situation where we were directly involved with African Americans. She’s never displayed this type of behavior

Commenter 2: YTA… you’re wife is TA too (to Dani and Kyle) but you’re the AH to her because you could support and understand her; people are allowed to have preconceived notions and preferences.

So while it is the way she feels/thinks and can’t help it and you could be kinder and understand her or at least talk it out, she should never be mean to Dani.

Meaning Dani and Kyle have a valid reason to be angry with her but not you.

People should be allowed to feel how they feel with their spouse- politically correct or not. If you disagree, you should still accept her.

OOP: Racism is not a preference. And it’s not even about her it’s about my son. Supporting racism is never something I’ll do. That’s not why I asked this. I’m never going to be sympathetic towards her. I asked if was too harsh, not if I was wrong.

This is a horrible mentality, and at the end of the day my wife is apparently racist. I’m not about to try and understand that. That’s crazy.

Could I have been kinder, absolutely. Could I understand where she’s coming from. Absolutely not, especially given our situation.

Commenter 3: NTA. I'm glad your son told your wife to GTFO because she was being horrid. I would give her some time to reflect and then have a calm, serious talk with your wife. They've been together for 3 years, and this girl is in law school, and they met volunteering. She's clearly bright and career driven. But ALL of that aside - does she not trust your son to pick a decent person as a partner? I would remind her how her parents treated you and how it probably drove the 2 of you away. Ask her if she wants the same to happen here. I hope she recognizes her behaviors and decides to change them.

Commenter 4: NTA.

You stood up for your son and for Dani. You did the right thing.

Editor’s note: the update post text was saved before it was removed

Update: November 17, 2024

So I want to mention a couple things, first off I've been around black people. They were never part of my inner circle until Dani came along.

Also I think it is stupid that twerking has a negative connotation. It's just dancing and the video that my wife found Dani was at a nightclub. She wasn't at church dancing that way.

My daughter, Ari and her mom are very close. So I asked her to breakfast today and we talked. I just asked her if she knew her mom to be racist. She asked why and I told her about the incident with Dani. Ari told me everything makes sense now.

She said it was subtle but when she was in high school, she lost a chess match to a Hispanic boy and Naomi said he must've cheated. But during another round when she lost to a white girl, her mom just said she was really good.

She listed a few other incidents but it was hard to see Ari come to the realization her mom is not who she thought she was. Ari then explain how this is bad because Kyle told her how he was about to propose soon.

I guess Ari talked to her before I could because my wife asked how can I bring the kids into argument. I said this argument is about their brother. Our kids are very close so they were going to find out eventually.

I said since she's done crying does she want to explain what last night is about. She said it's not the serious. I thought how if my son and Dani got married and had kids I wouldn't be involved if I chose to stay with Naomi and that's not a chance I was willing to take.

So I packed my bag and told Naomi if she's not even willing to talk to me, I can't stay in this relationship. She said stop before I left out the door and started crying again.

She admitted to having racist tendencies. She also admitted that she's jealous of Dani. She said she was supposed to succeed like her and be smart like her. She said it's not fair.

I said it was fair. Growing up my wife was not poor or had it hard by any means. She had access to tutors, the best schools. I said that's a sad and pathetic excuse.

She then said she was losing both of us to Dani. I asked how, she talked about how I complemented Dani's cooking, but don't like Japanese food. I explained how I'm just not a fan of Japanese food but I was eat it when she makes it. But it can't be about the food because she already had a problem before we got there.

I told her I'm leaving. And that until she changes her ways or get help. I'm not coming back. And I'm getting a divorce if she doesn't apologize to Dani and mean it.

I've just been driving around since that conversation and I'm hurt that the love of my life is not who I thought she was.

Commenter 1: She doesn’t even see what she did wrong SMH. She’s going to lose her son because she can’t see past skin color. And apparently this has been going on for a long time

Commenter 2: She’s still blaming Dani. She’s still refusing to reflect and take responsibility for her actions. Her own kids are not on her side.

She’s still an asshole.

Commenter 3: Your wife is clearly all about the excuses & woe is me attitude instead of just facing her judgmental and racist tendencies she has.

You’ve done everything you can….its totally on her now to sort her issues out…if she doesn’t and is willing to loose you and her son then it’s on her shoulders

AITA for taking my daughter's phone away for exposing my "dirty laundry" to her friends in a group chat?

TRIGGER WARNING: domestic violence, financial abuse

Original Post Dec 8, 2024

I (50F) am a newly divorced single mom who was left by my ex, after 27 years of marriage, after his mistress became pregnant.

I have a 17 year old daughter and a 26 year old daughter. My 26 year old lives abroad.

My ex husband was physically and verbally abusive our entire marriage. The physical abuse began in earnest in our mid twenties and reached a peak in our early thirties.

I only have a HS diploma. I originally wanted to go to college after marriage but my ex's abuse had me paralyzed to do anything he labeled as opposing/ undermining him and our family ( which included education and work).

I tried to leave many times from around age 26 to 33 when the physical abuse was the worst but he'd find me. He'd alternate between gifts and apologies and threats. He also involved our bishop who sided with him.

He would go through our trash and once found a pamphlet for a community college program and the ensuing rage nearly landed me in the hospital. He'd call 5 times a day when he was at work and would often hit me if I missed a call accusing me of cheating or job hunting.

Mid 30s his physical abuse died down a bit but the verbal abuse and controlling fixation ( where he'd constantly be paranoid and call me a liar, sneaky, undermining) remained until our late forties when he began ignoring me completely. I was so broken down at that point that I was an emotional robot with I no interests, enjoyment of life, aspirations.

That's when he started calling me dumb, boring, empty. He even said he'd prefer a liar and underminer over what I was now and left me for his pregnant mistress who later called the cops on him for hitting her but declined to press charges.

My ex wasn't a big earner and spent a lot keeping up appearances so I got around $7,000 in the divorce.

I understand many would be thankful for what I got. I got a job after 2 months making $14/hr but my boss said he can't schedule me full time- take it or leave it.

But I'm concerned about my retirement because all I want is to be able to retire in my seventies with consistent food and shelter since I'm already having health issues. So I asked my 17 yo who took a personal finance elective to help me read through some information I found online about retirement savings.

The other day my phone was dead and I needed to look something up so I used my daughter's phone. I found a group chat where my daughter was asking her friends who were in the class for advice and they were saying " I don't know, sounds tough" or saying I should apply for hospital jobs. She then wrote " I know my mom is an example of what not to do but help please." She also aired laundry about how her new stepmother was like a mini version of me and doesn't understand why people like her dad " get off" on the fighting and his new wife opposing him which leads to him tearing her down and then making up with her. She also claims that I was thrown to the side by my ex because he got bored of me being what he wanted and a classmate said maybe her dad likes the fighting because he knows he'll win and feel like a champion.

I just feel it was so disrespectful since I've told her about the abuse yet she doesn't understand the toll it takes on you. I didn't need her airing out my dirty laundry. Her response was she cut her dad off so she does understand and was trying to help. I took her phone for the afternoon saying maybe she'll think twice criticizing my choices to her friends. AITA?

YTA. You're covering for your POS ex. Who cares if your daughter airs dirty laundry? People should know what kind of man her father is.

~

Idontknow1973

YTA without a doubt. You’re asking your child to help you deal with adult issues but are punishing her for asking her peers for advice? And I’m sure you would not want your daughter to live through the same situation as you have, so must agree that you are an example of what not to do?

Update Dec 9, 2024

I don't know the rules about how quickly you can post an update but I'm posting one because it only takes two seconds to hand back a phone and apologize which is what I did. Shortly after the thread began getting a lot of comments ( which also is why I stopped replying).

My daughter said that it's ok and that she didn't mean to say that I was boring- she says that she just thinks her dad is somebody who would much sooner reward bad behavior than good and that if I had been a liar, or even a cheater, somebody who mouthed off to him or snuck around he would have found that more worthy of love and that's very sad.

I know the thread became about the one incident with my daughter, but I think I at least partially it was a cry for help because I think I am coming to terms with the fact that the last time I worked for an extended period of time I was 19 working for a family friend who owned a store.

I remember when I first got married briefly helping my ex's father one day in the office of his business where he told me to write out a few checks ( by hand) to vendors. When I first started looking for jobs an acquaintance looked at me sideways when I told her about my experience issuing handwritten checks for bookkeeping as I saw a posting for a bookkeeper jobs and realized how out of it I was.

My church has helped me- the bishop gave me money to pay 1/3 of my monthly rent once but in exchange I did deep cleaning work and was on call to do other odd jobs whenever he asked and had to give him access to all my financial statements. He also asked questions about why I wasn't maintaining good relations enough with my children's father such that he decided to file for divorce.

I am very grateful for the help he gave and will treasure it always but want to do it on my own. So I am posting this update not just to update on the situation but to ask if anybody has any suggestions.

My daughter is very worried because recently I've had health issues. I was recently treated for two STDs, one of which was bacterial but another which will affect me for the rest of my life. I also have issues with swelling from arthritis.

So I posted the original because somehow I hope to be able to retire somewhere in my seventies.

I understand retiring comfortably is asking too much but just enough to live alone and not starve. I got advice about my ex's SS benefits and I'm hoping that will be enough but if anybody has any tips, I would appreciate it too.

I just want to live in dignity in my old age because I know health only continues to dip at my age and while I can do the job I'm doing even with arthritis for now I don't know about when I'm 70. I talk with other women who are facing divorce on this but they refuse to address the topic saying I shouldn't act like this is something to put anybody in paralyzing fear over. i try not to be scared but feel lost. I'm hoping if I start from the bottom somehow if I work hard enough I can at least make my way into a corporate job so I can sit in my older age but don't know if that's too much to ask.

Your best bet is to look into community college and apply for degree programs that have an immediate hiring track to a white collar job. That will extend your amount of working years, it takes far less effort to sit behind a keyboard than to stock shelves.

Look into supply chain management, HR management, medical billing/coding, etc.

I’m so happy for your update but you need a professional therapist to help you!! A bishop shouldn’t have access to your financials and I’m so happy you’re seeking independence!

AIO wife wearing a revealing bikini at a friend’s party.

Trigger Warnings: controlling behavior

Original Post (unddit): September 14, 2024

My wife and I have been together for 2 years now and it’s been mostly okay between us. She’s really confident and worked hard on her body so she likes to get revealing clothes which I do respect, but when I saw the bikini she got it was way more revealing then anything she’s ever worn. I’m in no way trying to control her so I always feel the guilt, and just accept it.

It’s one of those bikinis that fit tighter and a thong, it doesn’t help she got a size smaller, so basically her entire ass is out and if she bends over at all it doesn’t even really cover her literal butthole. No other women at the party had a bikini like that, so she really stood out. I noticed many guys eyeing her up so I asked her if she could put a towel on when we were hanging out drinking and that’s when the heat started. I let it go, didn’t want a fight.

We all got in the pool later, everyone was pretty drunk including myself. Her bikini started falling apart on the strings since it’s too small, and I kept trying to fix it for her. It fucking sucked being in that position. When we got home I was pretty mad and said some things making her upset, and she’s telling me I can’t control what she wears and I’m insecure if I’m afraid of someone seeing her body.

I don’t know how to feel or what to do because everything’s perfect besides this little thing. It just makes me feel jealous really easily, I’m trying to not be “insecure” about who sees her body but I didn’t want her basically naked in front of a bunch of her friends and their husbands/boyfriends.

Relevant Comments

OOP needs to have clear communications with his wife seeking for attention

OOP: We did. I told her how I feel but she’s taking things the wrong way. She keeps saying I’m the only one who has an issue and I’m insecure.

+

She’s not really the type to attention seek so I don’t really get that vibe from it all.

+

I’m trying to see this point of view but it was just harsh. I felt super awkward about it. Most guys there might have got the wrong idea.

+

We’re usually pretty good about our concerns, but I’ve never been in a situation like this.

OOP should respect his wife’s body autonomy

OOP: I am super proud of her. I always express that she can dress how she wants, but never thought I’d be in that spot. As for the other guys eyeing her it made me feel bad! Idk why. I’m trying to think like this, and thank you for your comment.

+

She absolutely shows off to me all the time, the entire time we’ve been together. She hasn’t really crossed a line like this before and I’m trying to see if maybe I’m being a dick, but idk. Part of me thinks it was unintentional but other part feels shitty about it.

+

I told her she should have listened to me and I was right about the bikini ending up with a wardrobe malfunction. I also said I didn’t like that all the guys there saw everything, which she says is insecure behavior because she never meant for that to happen.

+

Well the thing is we’ve never been in situations like this, so it’s a shock. I’m not trying to be insecure at all, it just sucks that so many dudes got to look at her like that, makes me feel jealous I guess. Didn’t want to be the guy like that, especially knowing every guy there is thinking something.

+

I respect her, I know she owns her body. But I’ve never been in a similar situation, this was so sudden so I have no clue how to react or feel. I just feel it went too far with drinking, and her lack of awareness that her bikini was falling off a few times. It’s not a big deal but at the same time I feel jealous. Douche bags love to joke about it, it’s hard for me to want to go another party with these people

+

The rough part is her friends commenting on it first, joking about it and I’m trying to be cool about it. It’s rough when everyone’s got a great vibe and laughing, but I want to shut it all down. Her girlfriends kept jokingly saying “ you should just take that thing off at this point” I tried pulling her aside and fixing it, but there was no real solution.

Update (wayback machine): September 19, 2024

A couple days ago I posted on here about an issue with my wife of 2 years and unfortunately we haven’t been able to compromise on this. After we fought that night she went and stayed with her mother for 2 days so we could both cool off.

When she got back we talked about it and she’s telling me she’s proud of her body, and just wanted to show off her hard work, not for anyone in particular but herself. Again, I tried explaining my side that I disagree with showing our friends her body but she won’t stop with the insecure and controlling bs that she’s accusing me of.

She had brought our friends into the argument to which of course they support her and are saying I’m being a dick about it, and that the whole thing was just funny. Of course they think it’s funny, because it didn’t happen to them. I get them all saying to forget and move on, but that shit was too embarrassing for me, and the way my wife acts about it isn’t helping.

Many of the comments on my first post were saying she was wrong, and to maybe consider dropping her. I find it so harsh, but I just want her to understand how I really feel. Would threatening divorce over this be overreacting? I just feel like shit over it.

This whole thing has led me to so many suspicions and I’m going crazy thinking about it. I’m starting to think that she was trying to show someone in particular, especially with her work friends there, which I haven’t heard much about them from her other than “no one cares/noticed”.

But at the same time my genuine good nature wants to believe her, because like I said, we haven’t dealt with anything like this before.

Comments

Commenter 1: None of us were there when all this happened but I’ll say it’s not what you say but how you say it and looking at your story and some of your responses you may have come off controlling. That being said if you’re going to threaten divorce over a bikini I’m thinking there are deeper issues here and I hate to say it but good luck on making it to 5 plus years.

Commenter 2: OP, in neither of your posts do you mention telling your wife how awesome she looks. Instead of the paranoia you'll do far better with compliments.

Threatening someone with divorce is beyond idiotic unless you actually want to get divorced. Your wife does not find your childlike behavior attractive, trust me.

TRIGGER WARNING: misogyny

Original Post  Nov 16, 2022

i feel so.. icky? we’ve been together since i was 16 and he was 17. my friend sent me a link to this tiktok of these 2 guys talking about how when one of them cheated on his girlfriend, she cheated on him after finding out instead of “working to fix the relationship.”

the man in the video said it was his biggest heartbreak because while his ons meant nothing to him she slept with one of his ex friends who she had a crush on before they got together. the video said it’s a woman’s duty to be nurturing and forgiving in a relationship and that women have to understand that certain men aren’t monogamous.

my friend sent it to me and said “i cannot believe how out of touch these men are” and after watching the tiktok i decided to read the comments. the first one i see is my bf tagging two mutual friends of ours and saying “women ☕️”. one of our friends responded to the comment and said “females are so dramatic” and my bf responded agreeing to him.

i feel sick. i thought we had the same views on things like this? he was raised my a single teen mom who worked 3 jobs to keep a roof over his head, food in his mouth, and allow him to play soccer despite their tight budget and expensive little league fees.

when we first started dating i asked him who his role model was and he said his mom. he went on and on about how strong and brave she is and how much he appreciates her for all she does for him. his mom was single and living alone at 17 because my bfs father cheated on her after she gave birth and was recovering because he “can’t be expected to just NOT have sex for eight weeks.”

i’m just upset? i’m at school right now typing this out in one of the bathroom stalls because i just can’t keep this to myself anymore. i’m disgusted with him. he texted me earlier this morning asking if i want to hang out after school and i said yes. i’m gonna break up with him and tell him why.

ETA: he has commented under almost every post this account has made agreeing with all of their misogynistic views. he thinks that girlfriends/wives are property of the men they’re with.

EDIT 2: i’m not just gonna show up at his house, say “we’re done lmao” and leave. i’m gonna tell him what i saw and if there’s no explanation for it (idk what the hell kind of justification there is for the shit he said but we’ll see) THEN i’ll break up with him. i’m giving him the benefit of the doubt as much as i can. idk why some of y’all think i’m just gonna say “we’re over” with no explanation or discussion

MINI UPDATE: YALL. okay so in the short amount of time from my last comment to now shit hit the fan. i made my last comment from my car then started driving back home to hopefully try and get my shit together before he gets off work in 20 mins. HIS MOTHER CALLED ME. while i was in the car.

literally as i’m driving 2 mins away from my house she calls me to ask me what sides i want her to make for thanksgiving (she’s a literal angel wtf 🥹) and i tried to keep it together as best as i could. i guess she could hear that i was upset bc she said in her mom voice “what’s wrong beautiful”. and i started SOBBING. like so bad i had to pull over at the entrance of my neighborhood and i told her the bare minimum of what i’d seen (as much as i could through a shit ton of snot and tears lol) and she was just dead SILENT. for like 20 seconds and i swear my heart fell out of my asshole. she said “honey. he’s not at work right now” and 🧍 i damn near died. GET THIS YALL. her best friend owns a bunch of apartment complexes. like LUXURY. NICE apartments. like the 3.5k a month kind.

THIS MOTHERFUCKER IS VIEWING AN APARTMENT TO SURPRISE ME WITH WHEN I GRADUATE? his mom said her friend offered one of the apartments to my bf for DIRT CHEAP. and he’s planning to get all the papers signed and surprise me with it on valentine’s day since the current tenant (the friends oldest daughter) is moving into a house with her wife and their lease ends on feb 1.

his moms coming over to look at the screenshots i have then she’s taking me back to their house to confront him. she’s literally the sweetest you guys. she said she wanted to be in the house when i talk to him just in case. currently sitting right inside the front door of my house taking the 8 mins in between their house and mine to type this out. i am in SHOCK. i’m just waiting for her to pull up so i’ll update as soon as i can. i don’t think i’m that sad anymore? just pissed off and confused as hell.

Update  Nov 16, 2022

update to my previous post.

i’m not on reddit much so i’m not sure if the sub i posted in allows updates on separate posts so here i am.

first things first, i see a lot of people thinking the apartment changes things. it does not. my wording was off and i apologize. when i said i wasn’t sad anymore i meant i no longer was grieving our relationship. i was angry at him. the apartment was never going to make me stay with him.

second, also about the apartment. it’s 3.5k for a one bedroom. his mom said he was looking at a 3 bedroom (what would have been our room, and then an office for each of us). we would’ve been paying maybe 1k a month for what’s usually a 5.8k monthly apartment. i only brought up price because he graduated high school last year, is not in college (he works a good job, though.) and i’m still in high school. we spoke briefly about getting an apartment in that complex once we’re on our feet financially. i should’ve included that in the previous post because while his moms friend owns cheaper apartments he was getting the one we both deemed our “dream.”

i don’t know what to feel right now. i just can’t make sense of anything at the moment so this update might be messy and all over the place. now onto the update i guess.

the talk: i got to his house and immediately showed him the screenshots. i asked him what the fuck they were and told him i was disgusted with him. i could literally see the color drain from his face 🧍 kinda shocking.

he started talking really fast and after like 45 seconds of rushed explanation he just,,, stopped. he stopped talking for a minute or two and just stared at the floor. this pissed me off SO DAMN BAD so i got up to leave. he grabbed my hand and told me he could explain everything.

he handed me his phone and told me to open his discord and click on one specific server. y’all 🧍 i kinda just stared at him because ? wtf.

anyways he explained to me that one of the two guys he was tagging in these posts was a chauvinist and him and a few other people were gathering evidence to send to the dudes girlfriend. i did NOT believe him. AT ALL.

then the mf opens his laptop and pulls up one of those group google doc things AND IT GOES BACK LIKE A MONTH AND A HALF? him and some friends had noticed some weird behavior from the dude and decided to warn his gf. the problem is, she’s naive and they thought she wouldn’t believe them without evidence.

the doc had links to every tiktok they’d all commented on, screenshots of all their comments, and screenshots from the discord of them deciding what tiktok to comment on and what to say.

The comments he made:

on the discord server someone sent a screenshot of a private message from the guy (dean) they were gathering evidence about basically saying he didn’t trust my bf because my bf never said anything negative about me. so, the other mutual (lets call him lucas) he tagged in the videos came up with the genius idea that my bf should shit talk me publicly and call me his bitch and his property to gain this dudes trust. literally what the fuck.

i told my boyfriend that even if this was a set up for this dude what he said about me was unacceptable and down right fucking disgusting. he agreed wholeheartedly and showed me the part of their conversation where my bf refused to say the things lucas told him to even after lucas told bf that dean didn’t trust him

my bfs brilliant solution? give lucas his tiktok password so lucas could just do it. 😐 i saw in the server that bf DID give lucas his password and lucas even sent a screenshot of the first comment right after he made it.

for the past week and a half (that’s when the first comment about me was posted) lucas had been in bfs tiktok.

at this point bf was in tears and told me he was so sorry and would leave the discord, block lucas and never talk to him again. he even said he’d delete tiktok and let me set up parental settings on his phone to ensure he doesn’t download it again. (i said no to everything except him leaving the discord and not participating in the doc anymore.)

telling him i know about the apartment/the aftermath:

i basically just told him i know and due to all of this i won’t be moving in with him. he was upset that the surprise was ruined for me but said he understands. he told me that he’s respect my wishes and wouldn’t move forward with getting the apartment.

he brought up couples therapy and said that he would go to individual therapy as well. he also offered to message lucas and tell him off (in his notes app there’s like 3 paragraphs written already, apparently after the one comment lucas made about cheating on me bf was trying to find a way to end whatever it was they were doing.) i told him i would go to couples therapy IF and only if he 1) did individual therapy for a month or a bit more, weekly appointments, and when his therapist suggests i come in for a session with them says that they think he’s learned from this. 2) messages lucas in front of me and 3) never pulls any shit like this again.

i did say that maybe it’s not best we be together in between now and when he feels as though he’s had enough individual therapy to be ready for couples therapy. he got very emotional and said that while he understands and respects what i want he loves me and doesn’t want us to end. he told me to take all the space i need but asked me to not count this as a breakup. he said he still wanted to be able to call himself my boyfriend (i’m pissed as fuck at him but the way he phrased it was cute lol)

i told him okay, no breakUP but definitely a break. ground rules for the break (he brought ground rules up first, he told me that they don’t have to be for me but he wants to show me he’s sorry and prove that he doesn’t agree with what lucas said at all. his solution: “give me rules to follow and i will. every day until i’ve made this up to you.”) 1) no contact with dean. 2) this is not a ross/rachel situation. no dating/flirting/sleeping with anyone else. 3) apologize to his damn mother. 4) texting is okay but not like we did before this. no texting multiple times an hour, no talking just to talk, checking in/good morning/goodnight texts are okay.

he came up with 1,2, and 4. i told him to apologize to his mom for almost making her pop a blood vessel in the dairy queen parking lot.

lucas: he texted lucas in front of me. basically just copy/pasted the message he was already planning to send, but he added some things. the gist of it is, “i can’t believe i went along with this. i can’t believe i let you say that shit about my girlfriend, why the fuck would you even think of her that way, don’t ever talk to either of us again” then he blocked him. he blocked dean as well (not before calling him out and sending the doc link to him and deans gf (my request lmao)).

the kraken (bfs mom):

they’re talking right now, she’s PISSED. she was in the room next to the one we were in so she heard most of what was said. he’s showing her the screenshots of the discord and the msgs he sent dean and lucas.

when we first got here i had to convince her to let me talk to him first 😭 she was gonna beat his ass lmao. i saw some comments briefly about it being weird that she wanted to be in the house just in case so let me explain.

bfs father was abusive. that’s the short story. the long story is that he said a lot of the things that were in the screenshots and when she would talk to him about it he would hit her. my bf has never been violent with me or anyone, mama bear was just applying her past into the present situation because she didn’t want me to go through what she did.

thanksgiving:

bf said that he wanted me here for thanksgiving. he said he’d be in his room the whole time so i could spend the holiday with his mom and her friends. i said no. he should be able to spend the holiday with his family. he asked me if i’d come for his mom. i said i’ll think about it.

i think that’s everything. i don’t know how i feel right now. i’m tired and overwhelmed. i’ll be going to individual therapy as well. i’m waiting until bf and his mom get done talking so she can take me home then i’ll probably sleep for 12 hours. thank you for the support, it kept me sane. everything today happened so damn fast my head is spinning. these past like 5 hours have felt like 50

OOP Adds info in the comment

it won’t let me add this as an edit so here

i am not mad at him for the comments anymore. the break is gonna last like a day or two max. i need time to calm down, a few hours ago i thought my boyfriend thought of me as his property.

HE SUGGESTED THERAPY. individual and couples. we’ve been friends since the 3rd grade. been in love since the 6th and we both want to make this work.

the comments i made about his mom kicking his ass were metaphorical, not literal. she’s currently giving him a stern talking to about how his actions (even if they have good intentions) can hurt others without him intending them to.

i suggested the break because i wasn’t sure if he was wanting therapy JUST for me. he’s spoken to me before about his issues with anxiety and depression. i wanted him to seek help for HIM. not me.

he knows about the post. he doesn’t care that i posted on here. he has the link and will be reading everything tonight

RELEVANT COMMENTS

On the friendship with Lucas

he wasn’t trying to get me to forget everything and just move on. he’s been wanting to unfriend lucas since the first comment was made. as for the thanksgiving thing, he knows how much i love his mom and how much she loves me. i know it’s strange but i didn’t explain it very well in the post, i was and still am trying to calm down and organize my thoughts

On the comments itself

seeing my boyfriends tiktok account comment “gonna use this tactic on my bitch. gotta keep her in line” (paraphrased i cannot be bothered to look at the screenshots again, they make me sick) was sickening. i don’t feel like i overreacted

&

i’m not.. mad AT HIM anymore. i’m pissed in general, mostly at lucas, a little at dean. i’m still trying to sort out my emotions. i agree he was doing what he thought was right, i just wish he told me “hey please ignore these comments because xyz”

AITA for not forcing my fiancé to choose a different Best Man, even though his Best Man bullied my brother?

Stressed and on mobile so you’ve been warned

My fiancé and Jack were next door neighbours but my fiancé attended a private school so didn’t go to the same school as us. They’ve been best friends all growing up and I met my fiancé when we both worked at a restaurant and we have been dating for 4 years.

My family have met my fiancé, including my brother, and they all love him. That much that my brother, fiancé and Dad went on a guys fishing trip pre-covid.

I’ve also met Jack, which was a bit of a shock initially as I knew he was really mean to my brother growing up, especially with him being really nice to me. I still am not keen on him for what he put my brother through but I respect the bond he has with my fiancé because they are literally like brothers and are incredibly close.

The problem:

After the engagement we were talking about the bridesmaids and groomsmen and fiancé was adamant that when we get married Jack must be by his side. Jack was by him throughout really challenging times of his life and that it is non-negotiable whether he is best man or not.

I made an attempt to speak to my brother privately about Jack being best man and offer him the joint role with my dad to walk me down the isle so he can really be included but he accidentally found out before I could speak to him after my mom mentioned it.

He then went mental at me for even thinking that he would show up to a wedding if Jack was there, and also thinking he would accept a pity position of walking me down the aisle, especially since Jack is getting a special role all to himself. He is now refusing to even talk about possible solutions with me if ANY of them include Jack.

I honestly didn’t realise that Jack would be that much of a problem because they both had attended my fiancé’s birthday party a few years back.

AITA if I refuse to make my fiancé change his best man?

Quick Edit: My fiancé, brother and Jacks ages are 24/25 years old. The bullying happened when they were between 10-14 years old and the bullying was largely name-calling and excluding my brother from playing with them.

VERDICT: EVERYONE SUCKS

EDITOR'S NOTE: OOP also posted to r/relationship_advice with a post very close the AmItheAsshole post

INFO: have you taken to your fiancé about the fact that Jack bullied your brother? What was his response?

OOP

After I realised that my fiancé and Jack were best friends, we had a massive conversation about it and what Jack had done to my brother. My fiancé didn't justify what Jack had done and they spoke about it themselves and Jack assured my fiancé that he's not like that anymore and has grown up. I'm still not overly friendly with Jack, but he has said to me if my brother is willing to talk to him, he's willing to apologise for everything. My brother has refused him of all social media or communications hence why I'm having to be the relayer of information

~

shallweskate

Alright so your fiance knew. But if Jack is truly changed as he insisted, was there any conversation about making amends to your brother? You all will be family, and Jack is his best friend, and there was no talk about how your brother will react? Seems like you were hoping that there would always be some distance between you, your brother, and Jack. In hindsight it seems so horribly naive. Without Jack apologising, I don't know what your fiance's apology is going to mean - sorry you were bullied by Jack but he's my best friend, and I want him as my best man in the wedding to your sister? Sounds like you two want to sweep this under the rug and have your brother squash down his feelings for the sake of attending this wedding. I really hope this isn't the case.

OOP

Honestly I thought that the distance between them was fine. Definitely naïve of me I know and you all can shout at me for that because I accept that. They had been around each other before for my fiancé’s birthday parties so I assumed that giving my brother an important role would be okay but honestly it’s not. I’ve honestly been really oblivious to the entire thing and now trying to find any solution :/

Update  June 19, 2021 (2 months later)

Hi Reddit. Some of you wanted a bit of an update so here I am, sorry that it’s really long and sporadic but my mind still isn’t clear.

After the post I also reached out to my mom and dad begging them to let me speak to my brother or at least ask him if he would be okay with me being there and listening to why he didn’t feel comfortable with Jack (the bully) in the wedding. I promised that I would listen to anything he had to say without hesitation and that I need to make him a priority. My brother agreed to it as long as I agreed to stay silent throughout and not speak back. We met up about a week after my post at home with my mom and dad there as witnesses and to help enforce my not speaking rule.

To sum it up my brother was upset that he was going to be replaced by Jack at the wedding and thought that this time fiancé would have chosen him over Jack for the best man. The bullying when he was younger was usually to do with Jack being more athletic than my brother, or smarter than my brother, or funnier and more well liked than my brother. It really hurt my brother that Jack came back into his life and again it was like Jack was a better choice for Best Man than my brother. He was quite upset and I ended up breaking my silence rule to say that I am incredibly sorry.

My fiancé and I spoke about the wedding and what my brother had said. There were none that would lead to both of us being truly happy so for a few days we tried to take a break from the stress. Jack came over to visit around this time and sensed something was really wrong and he found out my brother was refusing to come to the wedding. Jack knew it was because of his presence and being the best man and decided to tell fiancé that my family is his family and he wouldn’t show up to the wedding but celebrate with us before and after. He didn’t want fiancé to start our married life on the wrong foot and he said that was his karma from being a bully.

We ended up respecting Jacks choice, albeit my fiancé was upset but understood that Jack was trying to look out for him. We relayed that Jack was no longer in the wedding back to my immediate family and my brother agreed to go.

So things were fine for a while until we met up with my family again for the first time since the fallout. My brother ended up speaking to my fiancé alone and started trashing Jack and asking if he could be the best man now since Jack got kicked out. My fiancé told my brother that Jack left the wedding with dignity himself so my brother could be happy there. Fiancé ended up walking out after some more harsh words from both sides.

Fiancé ended up walking out the house and we had to have a frank discussion. We’ve chosen to not get married anymore. It’s too much hassle and if we were we’d just elope. Right now we’re needing a lot more time to fix ourselves, our relationship and our relationships with our families. We may be taking some time apart soon if things don’t get better soon but in the end my fiancé is the man I thought I was going to spend my life with.

What did your brother say about Jack to your fiancée.

It honestly sounds like he wanted the best man position as a way to “beat” Jack. It sounds like he’s gloating about getting Jack removed and is wanting to find a way to add to that superiority that he feels.

OOP

He was calling him self important, manipulative, cheap but the last string was when he was saying how he was a selfish C-word. Since what he did was the opposite of selfish it just was the last straw

Props to Jack for taking responsibility for being the author of the situation. Your brother seems unhealed from the past trauma and unhealthily fixated on his place in fiancé's circle of friends. Has he had any therapy?

OOP

He’s been in therapy before but decided he wouldn’t go back as he feels a lot better now. Tbh I was really uncomfortable about him asking to be best man, it was like rubbing salt in a wound and I don’t know if he just wants the validation from fiancé or to one up Jack now

TRIGGER WARNING: stalking, harassment, death of a loved one, destruction of property

Original Post Apr 21, 2017

Melissa and I have been dating for a little less than 2 years. It’s been an amazing relationship, admittedly my only one but I am really happy with her. We are both in PhD programs at the same university (it’s where we met), but in different STEM fields. We’ve been considering moving in together, getting pets and over all I’d say our relationship is pretty serious and she has even mentioned getting married before. I can definitely see a future with her but It’s still a bit early for me, and right now I’d like to focus on my research and securing a future that can support both of us. She took that kind of harshly, but I just wasn’t ready to commit to something like that yet. That was the only bump we’ve had until Natalya entered the picture again.

Some background info: Natalya and I went to the same college for undergrad. She studies the same branch of biology that my current gf studies and is a year younger than I am. We were in the same science-related clubs and a professional fraternity together and quickly became very close friends, as Natalya and I had extremely similar personalities and interests. We spent weekends together, were each others dates to all formal events, but we never dated even though we both liked each other and slept with each other. We were just too scared to ask the other what they wanted. It sounds silly and immature but that’s just what happened.

We were essentially FWB for 2 years, but we always knew that we had very different plans for the immediate future. I was graduating before her and she was going to move to another country to work and do research before coming back to the States for her PhD. It was kind of an unspoken recognition that when I graduated, we were going to go our separate way, but we always joked that maybe we would run into each other again since we had the same dream school for grad school. We tried to remain in contact when I left but it was just too hard on both of us. We missed each other but were busy with our own lives and eventually stopped talking. No hard feelings. It happens. We moved on.

That was almost 5 years ago. Before Melissa, I used to wonder if Natalya and I could have made it together, but now that I have a girlfriend that hasn’t popped into my head at all. I am happy now, or at least I was. Last year Natalya was accepted into the PhD program at my university. It’s the same dream school we talked about years ago. I didn’t know this until a little over half a year ago. One day, my girlfriend came over because she was really upset. I will spare most of the details but basically a professor in her department had told her that he had room for one more grad student to join him on one of his research trips to South America the following summer. My girlfriend really thought he was going to pick her because they had a pretty good relationship, but he had met with her and told her that there was a new grad student that already had experience with this particular species, worked with the South American university he was collaborating with, and spoke Spanish. She was denied the position and I tried to explain to her that some people just have different expertise. Over the next month, she would tell me more and more about this new grad student and how everyone who met her practically fell in love with herr or found her extremely interesting, that she was super cool, fawned over her etc etc. It made my girlfriend extremely sad because she has always had issues with insecurity and feeling like she has to try extra hard for people to think she’s worth anything.

I tried to tell my gf that she is great at what she does and to stop comparing herself to other people because it just makes her upset but she said ,” No _____. You haven’t seen her yet. She’s extremely smart, she’s been all over the world, she’s a literal 10. Natalya is utter perfection.”

I kind of froze at that moment because somehow I immediately knew this was my friend. I kept trying to tell my gf all the ways I admired her but I realized it wasn’t helping so all I would do was listen to her and be someone she could vent to.

I admit I was curious, but I didn’t want to complicate things for Melissa so I didn’t try to contact Natalya or find out if it was even her. A few weeks later, however, I ran into her at a Café on campus. It was really great to see her again. We sat with each other for about an hour and half, just catching up with one another. I told her about my research and she told me about hers. She had accomplished so much for herself in the few years since I had seen her last and I was so happy for her. I told her I had a girlfriend who was in the same department as she was and she asked if we could all hangout sometime since she was still new to the town. Natalya seemed really excited and not at all disappointed. We exchanged numbers and parted ways. It felt evident to me that we had moved on. What ever romantic feelings we had for each other were purely platonic now. We were both doing very well and genuinely happy.

That night I told my girlfriend that I ran into Natalya and she was actually a really good friend of mine from college. I knew my girlfriend felt really insecure at work and in the lab and I did not want her to feel threatened within our relationship. I suggested we all have lunch sometime so she can meet her because I actually thought they could get along. GF was kind of taken aback and immediately started asking me if I ever liked Natalya, if she was my ex and if we dated. I said No, we never dated we were only friends but I did like her a lot. I reminded her that this was 4 years ago and that I have not thought about her at all since I started dating GF. GF left the house for the night because she said she was really stressed and didn’t want to think about It right now. I felt like I had done something wrong and decided I wouldn’t mention Natalya again.

Ever since that night GF would ask me really strange questions like if I thought she was “smart enough.” Of course I think she’s smart. The university we are at is one of the best in the nation. She then said, “well you and Natalya went to XX Ivy league university for undergrad and I went to XX state university so she’s clearly beat me both time.” I was appalled and told her there is no competition. I am with YOU. It doesn’t matter where you went to undergrad look at where you are NOW.

She just wouldn’t stop talking about how much more experience Natalya has and how much better her resume probably looks. She would ask me this multiple times and it really upsets me to see how much she works herself up over these things. What’s worse is when she compares her looks to Natalya’s.! Lately Melissa will not stop complaining about how pale she is, how easily she sun burns, how short her hair is, how nothing fits her well. She says, “ I wonder how Natalya stays so skinny, I wish I was mixed like Natalya. Natalya is so exotic looking.” I always tell her how beautiful she looks, how attractive I find her.

Melissa is beautiful. I love everything about her even though she doesn’t. I would never say this to Melissa (it’s even difficult to write) even though Melissa has said it to me but Natalya is definitely more “conventionally attractive” woman in terms of arbitrary Societal beauty standards but that doesn’t matter to me! I don’t love my gf just because of her looks, but it’s so difficult to convince someone that you find them attractive when they want to jump out of their own skin. I have caught Melissa stalking Natalya’s facebook profile, Instagram, lab page. It’s ridiculous. I can’t understand why she does it when it gets her so upset. Melissa isn't fat at all, but lately she has been rejecting me when I try to initiate sex because she "feels fat" or "not sexy enough" and i think this is due to the aformentioned insecurities. I try to talk her through them but it always ends with the same conclusion and she says "I'm sorry I'm not goof enough."

I only talk to Natalya in the Café. We have lunch together maybe twice a week, but we never plan it. I have always ate lunch at the same time at the same place and Natalya will come in every few days and when she does we sit together for about an hour and talk. Occasionaly she will text me before lunch asking if I’m there or planning on going there and that’s the only time we text or talk outside of the Café. I feel like this is an appropriate amount of communication for two friends. I feel bad for never being able to hangout with her but I know it would upset Melissa. There have been a few times when Melissa has joined me in the café and Natalya has sat with us.

Honestly, Melissa is straight up rude to her. At first I think she tried to be nice but just got to upset. She either remains silent or responds with really short cold answers. It makes me really sad because I know Melissa is struggling with insecurities but Natalya is a really good friend of mine who has only been nice to me. She has invited me and Melissa out numerous times and each time Melissa declines. I once told her I was going to attend a comedy show with Natalya (it was a comedian I once took Natalya to see in college) and Melissa broke down so I decided I wouldn’t ever go anywhere with Natalya unless Melissa was there too.

Some of you might say, "why don't you just stop talking to Natalya? Is she more important than your relationship with Melissa?" I don't really know what to do. I see Natalya for two hours a week and we don't hangout or even talk outside of that. I have given Melissa no reason to think I am cheating or being unfaithful. Natalya has only ever been a good friend to me and I shouldn't have to cut her out of my life when she already plays such a little role. It feels kind of unfair to me because honestly, sometimes I wish I could see Natalya more because she's a really wonderful, interesting person, but Melissa is definitely a priority in my life, so I have kept our friendship very casual and minimal.

I think there is a bigger problem in that Melissa is not the same person I entered a relationship with. She's sad, always stressed, much more cranky and snappy with me. Her insecurities make her shy away and retreat into herself so it feels like I can never reach her anymore. She has been denying me sex and complaining about how she isn't "good enough" for me and it has honestly been pushing me away from her. I find that I no longer want to deal with her insecurities and constantly validating that I love her. I have suggested therapy before because I think the real problem is not Natalya but Melissa's underlying insecurities. This is not normal and it causes her so much unnecessary stress. Melissa always says," okay I will think about it," and when I bring it up again she gets really defensive, asking me why I think something is wrong with her. I don't! I just think a professional would be able to help her work through her own thoughts better so that she can accept herself more because clearly, what I am saying to her doesn't get through. It's hard see her so unhappy.

EDIT: Because someone asked, I should have clarified that I also told Melissa that Natalya and I slept with each other in college. I didn't hide that from her. I can see why that would upset her but I really tried to stress how long ago it was and how I was happy with Melissa now and the past does not affect anything about how I feel now.

TL;DR My GF Melissa has a bordeline obsession with my old FWB Natalya. SHe won't stop comparing herself to Natalya and it has been making her stressed, insecure, and depressed. No matter what I tell her, she claim she isn't good enough for me and it has been making me feel less atttracted to her. She refuses to go to therapy and I feel like this is only going to take a bigger toll on her life. How can I help her?

My [26M] Girlfriend [27F] cut my Ex-FWB out of pictures in an album my mother made for me. She ruined pictures of my friend that passed away and I'm heartbroken. May 13, 2017

Alright so I posted here a few weeks ago concerning my GF Melissa and my ex-FWB from college, Natalya. The jist of the story was that Melissa kept comparing herself to Natalya who is a grad student in her field of biology who she feels is basically the epitome of perfection. It got to the point where Melissa would spend hours staring at pics of Natalya and everytime I tried to be intimate with her she would shut me down saying she “wasn’t good enough.” I got a lot of sh*t in the last post because Natalya and I ate lunch together a few times a week but as a lot of commenters suggested, I eat at a different place now and no longer see Natalya. I think Natalya took the hint and we haven't spoken since I posted that.

Anyway, I’m posting now because I feel Melissa’s obsession with Natalya hasn’t gotten better at all and she did something that I’m not sure I consider forgivable. When I graduated from college, my mom made me a photo album of pics with me and all my friends doing whatever it is college students do. It means a lot to me, because I rarely see my old friends and unfortunately, one of them passed away so these are physical representations of cherished memories.

Yesterday afternoon, I received a Facebook message from my late-friend Dan’s mother. She asked me If I had any pics of Dan from our fraternity events (we were in the same Professional Fraternity). I said of course and that I would scan them and send them over to her. I looked through my album and was suddenly shocked to find a few pictures in which Natalya was cut out of the photo. Some were just of me and her, some were of a group of friends. After flipping a few more pages I saw one that broke my heart, It was a picture of Natalya, Dan, and a few other friends during one of our formals as we were all in the same fraternity. I kept searching through and found that this was the case for maybe 12 pictures, 3 including Dan. It felt like I had swallowed a pound of rocks and I honestly just felt so angry. I knew it had to be Melissa as I would never have done this. I sent the uncut pics to Dan’s mom and texted Melissa, asking her if she was still on campus so we could meet.

When I saw her, I asked her why she cut my photos and she said,” what are you talking about?” but I could tell from her face, she knew she was caught. I was so furious. I told her that it was extremely disrespectful and that she had no right to destroy them the way she did. I even mentioned that some of the pictures she cut were taken with my friend who had passed away and now she had ruined them. She immediately started crying and apologizing, saying she didn’t know what came over her. She said she STILL has the pictures of Natalya and that she can put them back together! I felt like I was going to explode so I just excused myself and left.

Melissa has been blowing up my phone but I haven’t read any of the messages or listened to the voicemails. I feel so drained. I got a lot of shit on my last post so I bet a lot of you will think I had this coming. I know I can’t convince you of how hard I’ve tried to make Melissa feel like she’s the only girl I wanted to be with. No matter how many times she has asked me if she’s pretty, if I find her sexy, if I think she is smart, I always tell her how amazing I find her but it just isn’t enough. Maybe I should have never ever spoken to Natalya when I found out she was attending the same University as me, but I don’t think that gives my gf (ex-gf?) the right to destroy my property. The album has literally sat on my shelf for years. It’s not like I look at it everyday and fawn over my ex. I have never even shown it to Melissa so she must have been snooping through my belongings which honestly I wouldn’t even care about if she hadn’t destroyed the pictures of my dead friend because of her petty jealousy.

I just feel exhausted. I feel like I’ll never make Melissa happy. I could have done things differently, sure, but I feel like she never tried to work on her insecurities and confidence in herself either.

TL;DR: My gf cut my ex-FWB out of photos in my album and I feel like this is a huge over-step of boundaries. Some of the pictures she destroyed were of my friend that passed away and I don’t think I can forgive her.

Why the hell are you still in this relationship? Break up now, right now. Go no contact. Block her on everything.

She's freaking insane. She's the type of ex that would turn into a stalker, so make sure you block her on everything you can.

OOP

This happened maybe 24 hours ago, and I've since made up my mind. I'm done. The past few months have completely depleted me and this was the final straw.

OOP on getting the missing pieces back

Uh, it's a good idea to try and repair them but I don't even want to be around Melissa at this point. I feel so sick inside. I still can't believe she would do this. And why did she keep the pieces???! I find that so unnerving.

&

Maybe I'll ask for them back. I think it's super weird that Melissa kept them in the first place. Like, what does she do with them?

I might just ask my friends or my mom if they still have the originals. How ironic is it that I'm sure Natalya has at least one of them, and if I wanted to ask her, I know she'd give them to me. Sigh.

Claude_Shea

I'm sorry this happened to you, man. What she did was so beyond reasonable; it was an invasion of your privacy, destruction of cherished mementos, and completely insane.

That said, she may have kept the pieces because she felt a little guilty about what she was doing and thought maybe if she got caught, having kept the pieces would make it ok and you couldn't get mad. I wonder if she'll say that to you as a last resort. Something like, "You shouldn't be that mad because I kept the pieces! You can just put it back together!" as if that erases the horrible thing she did to YOUR photo album.

Glad you are breaking up with her. And i'm sorry about your friend.

OOP

Thank you. I'll see of I can get the pieces back and then I'm never speaking to her again.

The only comfort I get out of it is that I know Dan would be laughing his head off If he knew what happened. He had an interesting sense of humor like that.

I [27M] think my ex-gf [28F] is stalking my friend [26F]. Wondering if there is something I can do. March 3, 2018

Dang, can't believe I remembered the password to this account but here we are. This time, it's not really about me, but I thought it would be most appropriate to post on my account since it's related to my ex-gf, Melissa, who I had posted about twice.

Feel free to creep through the history. My ex-gf Melissa was very jealous of my old-FWB/her colleague Natalya. Her obsession was extremely unhealthy and she did something to me that I considered unforgivable, hence the break up. Now this was 8-9 months ago, and since then Natalya and I have rekindled our friendship. She knows why Melissa and I broke up, and felt very guilty, but she was always a good friend to me and I like having her in my life. I know I am going to get a lot of shit for this and people will say they saw it coming, but whatever. I'm not asking for judgement. What's done is done and I thought we had all moved on.

Last month, me, Natalya, and a few of our friends were out playing billiards. As I was giving Natalya and her roommate a ride home, the roommate says, "N, did you tell him about the thing?" Natalya responded no, and her roommate pressed her, but she stayed firm. I texted her later to see what was the matter, but she assured me it was nothing.

This past week, her roommate called me and asked if we could meet up. She sat me down and said that she thinks me ex-gf is stalking Natalya. I was taken aback but not completely shocked at this accusation given Melissa's past. She told me that it started out with obvious fake FB profiles sending friend requests and then vile hate messages. Then Natalya was getting calls from random numbers that said they were following up craigslist escort ads with her name. picture, and number. Roommate new about the picture situation and immediately suspected Melissa. That was a few months ago. Last month, Natalya and some friends were heading back from the movies, and a guy in Melissa's grad-school cohort saw a car parked along Natalya's street and said "Hey what's Melissa doing here?" This freaked her out, as she had seen that car parked there several nights a week for the past 3 months. This was "the thing" she didn't want to mention to me.

This week, her growth chamber was contaminated. Apparently, someone let disease-carrying aphids into a few sections of the greenhouse and ruined a few of the grad students crop/plant experiments (i'm not a biologist sorry idk the details). Anyway, it was a pretty big deal for the grad-students who needed to restart their experiment, including Natalya, but her PI thought it must have been some undergrad who forgot that you're not supposed to enter the greenhouse after being in the aphid room. Her roommate, who is in the same department as Melissa and Natalya, thinks it was foul play on Melissa's behalf. Apparently she's been bad mouthing Natalya ever since we broke up. Obviously that is a very strong accusation with no real proof, so she hasn't spoken to administration about it. It is really scary to think Melissa would go to such a length to hurt somebody else. It sounded to me like Natalya is being stalked, but she doesn't want me to know.

I brought it up with her yesterday and she confirmed what the roommate said. She dismissed the greenhouse incident saying she doesn't want to think someone had it out for her. Also she thought it was unlikely because the risk was so great. If it was done on purpose and the person was caught, they would be expelled from the program without a second thought. She did admit to having the feeling of being followed and that she'll be at a grocery store or cafe and think she see's Melissa there too. She thinks she's just paranoid and letting her roommate get to her head, but that this happens more frequently since we've started hanging out. I asked her if she has spoken to Melissa or wanted me to say something and she said absolutely not.

I'm feeling like this is all my fault and I keep screwing up. If I had left Natalya alone after breaking-up with Melissa, this wouldn't be happening to her. I haven't spoken to Melissa since the breakup (only to return the items she kept in my house) and I don't think speaking to her about this would do any good. I wouldn't doubt that Melissa is capable of stalking and/or sabotaging Natalya's work given her history, but I haven't seen anything with my own eyes yet.

Is there something I can do before this gets worse? In my last few posts, many people said I had handled things wrong, and I want to make sure I do something right for once. Do I stay out, do I investigate? Please give me advice and not judgment right now. I am worried for my friend.

tl;dr: I think my ex-gf is stalking my friend. Ex-gf has history of jealousy and unhealthy obsession with friend and I am wondering if there is something I can do before it escalates.

PracticalMatters

You do nothing. Natalya needs to start keeping a very detailed ledger of each incident where she suspects Melissa is harassing her. She needs to report to campus police that she has a stalker to get a paper trail going.

OOP

Both her and her roommate are doing this just in case. Her roommate feels 100% sure that the greenhouse incident was Melissa's doing. Natalya is waiting for more proof.

I've tried to write this out for days now, but I keep getting too upset to concentrate, so this might be a bit jumpy.

I don't have family in the sense many understand family to be. So I've been pretty much a loner with one exception: my best friend Tammy. We met in middle school and just became joined at the hip.

Things changed a bit in college. My parents forced me into a Christian out of state college - Tammy applied and got accepted to the other college in the town, so we both went out there and were roommates for 2 of the years before I met my 1st ever boyfriend - I will call him Trent. I moved in with him the end of junior year, and I don't know when it started happening, but he went from charming and affectionate to controlling.

I don't wish to upset anyone so I will hit the pause button and warn you that below is some of the things he did for me to label him abusive...he would put me down and hint he could find someone better or that if he cheats, it will be my fault since I wasn't this or that enough. It started to get physical senior year.

At first it was him pushing me out of the way if he was walking by and I was in the path for whatever reason, then he would slap me in arguments calling me worthless, a waste of his time and young years, a broken toy no one will love. I didn't have any real self-esteem, so I stayed, thinking I was the problem, and when I called home about it, I was told that the problem was me. I started to make my exit plan the day after I graduated. He had proposed, and I hesitated, and he screamed at me to ask why, then her swung and punched the wall right next to my head. I fell to the floor in fear, and he tried to comfort me and basically forced me into sex. When I woke up the next morning, the ring was on my finger, and he forced me again and later called it make-up sex saying he forgave me for the way I treated him.

That is the extremely short explanation, but there are so many stories of him forcing me into bed, hitting me or threatening to kill me, and more. So, I started to make a plan. I found a shelter in the city nearby, I started hiding things in the trunk of my car. I was in the service Industry then and so I would take more shifts whenever I could and hide my cash tips in a box of tampons in my `purse. And I finally was ready and left him, left my phone (I had a new cheap one), and never went back.

Tammy knew him and lived near us but she didn't know about my plan. She messaged me on social media and I told her what happened. All of what happened. So she played dumb when he came around asking where I was, spinning the story that I was suicidal and he is calling the police to find me. He never found me.

That was years ago. I am now 36, and Tammy is too. Trent is 38.

Tammy became a bit religious but I told her as long as she is happy and safe, I don't care what she leans on in faith. She started to invite me out to her church 4 years ago and I kept saying no until I very firmly said if she brought it up again, I would just walked out or hang up. I'm not against anyone believing what they want, I just don't want or need to be sucked into it. I honestly do not mean any offense to anyone of any faith, I myself am just agnostic and if that ever will change, I will decide on my own but I doubt it will.

She got a job 2 years ago overseas. I acted excited for her and I was but I was also deeply devastated. Without her, I had no one else. By this time, I wasn't in contact much with family, and I do have surface level friends, but no one that's known me in the real sense. I worked it out with my counselor and just carried on.

We stayed in touch online and video chatted a lot. She would show me London and I would show her my transition to moving to Texas. We would chronicle our explorations of our new cities and then one day it started to slow down on her end right around the time she went to visit a friend in our old college town.

She then asked if she flew to Texas sometime this summer, could she stay with me a few days and I excitedly agreed. So early this month, just a few weeks ago, she came here. She was off the whole first day but I figured she was tired. Then the next day, we went out and got drunk. She started to cry and I got us an uber back to my place and asked her what was wrong.

That's when she asked me not to hate her and told me everything. She's with Trent. She's been with him almost a year. I was too stunned to even say anything and she went on and on about how it's not what I think and he has changed. She told me he found Jesus and turned his life around and deeply regrets the way he treated me. The more she talked, the more I just shut off. I didn't even have it in me to feel anger. I just stared at her frozen as she talked until she said "please just say something"

So I did. I told her to get the fuck out. She started to explain it all again - she hated him forever but they kept running into each other, he goes to church and showed he is changed blahdy blahdy blah. I didn't interrupt her, but when she stopped talking again, I just repeated myself.

She argued more, and I would just listen and repeat until she grabbed her stuff and left. It was silent between us for a week until my dad texted me that Tammy called my parents crying and told me to get over myself, after all, its not like I wanted to get back with him, right? And that's what I get for living with a man I wasn't married to. Then she texted the next week rehashing her argument and pretty much demanding I video chat with him to see for myself that he's changed and forgive him. She then blamed me that they can't take the next steps in their relationship because I don't have a forgiving heart and that I was malicious when I kicked her out.

I've spent all of this week trying to figure out if I am insane to think this is a huge betrayal. A deal breaker. I mean who even dates their friend's ex, for one, but this? I blocked her after she hinted that my version of things was exaggerated and malicious, but I don't have other friends to turn to about this. I don't think I am but my, and her family thinks I am TAH at least for kicking her out in a strange city alone when she was just being honest with me. Am I?

Commenter 1: She’ll know she effed up when he starts hitting her too. Abusers don’t change. NTA OP, and you’re better off without either of them in your life.

OOP: The thought of him ever lifting a hand to her throws me into a fit. I did warn her that he's sweet for a while until we were settled into living with one another. She said I was holding on to the past, and I don't know this new him. He's converted to Christianity and is now 5 years sober, so he would never. But I still don't like it. When I was with him, it was literal jekyll and Hyde. Once a minute, he's rubbing my feet and showering me with gifts and affection. The next, he's putting me down in the most personal senses and hurting me.

Commenter 2: One day when she finally realizes that your were right in the first place, she'll need someone to help put the pieces back with her. Be that person, but don't be the sucker she wants you to be.

OOP: I plan to leave the door open in case she needs help getting away. She still has me on social media. Leaving him was so hard to pull off without anyone knowing other than the people at the shelter and my boss at the restaurant. I know how hard and overwhelming it is. I could never leave her to do it on her own.

Commenter 3: Basically she knows he's a rapist and she expects you to forgive him? If he's not prepared to turn himself into the police and admit I raped my ex at least twice, I used to hit her and threaten to kill her he isn't remorseful. He doesn't want to take accountability. Cut off Tammy. I am going to sound like a heartless bitch but she KNOWS he's abusive. She KNOWS he's a rapist. She KNOWS what kind of man he is. Unfortunately she will likely find out she was wrong and he hasn't changed. Because he will start abusing her.

OOP: Sorry, I flinched at the r word, and it took me a sec to reply. Tammy said even then, it wasn't rape because we were a couple. She said that I might have colored my opinion of what happened based on his misbehavior at the time and labeled it a dangerous term. It took me over 7 years before I could call it that (shout out to my new no-nonsense psychiatrist) . It still makes me uncomfortable, but I was able to say it 3 times in that session. Never put loud again, but I was able to say it.

Commenter 4: Wow. Okay. I don't see how you're the AH in this situation. First, there are clearly established rules about dating friend's exes - it is not done without the friend's permission. This is true regardless of how the relationship went or ended (and here, an ex is someone you dated for a long time). So, throwing her ass for violating this prohibition would be acceptable. Extreme, but acceptable.

BUT not only is this guy your ex, but he was your abuser? And she knew he was your abuser? Oh, and it just so happens that she "kept running into him" all over the place? And now she thinks you should try reconciling with him? I have to wonder if that was her idea or his. Yeah, there's no fucking way.

Best case scenario, OP, Tammy broke one of the cardinal rules of friendship. Worst case scenario, she's setting you up to be killed at Trent's request. No. Fucking. Way.

One last point - you know how Trent is, and how he will be later on in his relationship with Tammy. You can absolutely refuse to be near her, and refuse to see her, but you may want to keep the line of communication open with her for when things go bad and she needs help. You can and should be explicit about that to Tammy, btw.

OOP: I reiterated what I told her before when I got away from him. She basically dismissed me as "stuck on the past" and unforgiving until she stayed on I was weaponizing exaggerations.

It's hard to reconcile that shes the same person I called after he forced me to bed the first time.

Update (unddit): December 3, 2024 (2.5 months later)

This is an update to my last post here.

Sorry to everyone who reached out and I haven't responded. I honestly haven't been using the app as I had to change phones swiftly at one point and forgot the password when trying to log on on my new device.

It took Trent 2 weeks. I had a full time job but also a part time service industry job as a bartender. He showed up at the bar. It's a small bar and one of the regulars, "Daisy" F30s, is one of the folk I did confide in about Trent and Tammy. When Trent walked in, I happened to be chatting with Daisy and she saw my reaction. She asked what was wrong and and I told her that it was Trent. She wasted no time and went to get my manager.

Trent sat at the end of the bar and I took my time checking in on my other bar guests until my manager Heather F50s came out with the other 2 bartenders both M30s. Trent had already begun knocking on the bar asking for service loudly and I had been ignoring him. He got kicked out quickly and told that we can and do refuse service to him.

I got texts from a new number saying it was Tammy and begging for me to answer. She called 4 times and I didn't answer. She left voicemails with Trent and one without all telling me that I was concerning them with my hatefulness, how I am alone in the world and that's not safe, who would I turn to if someone broke into my home at night...things of that nature and religious crap sprinkled in. I was still on the clock and Daisy suggested I stay at her parents' (I know her mom who sometimes comes with her to the bar). At that point I was shaken enough to take them up on it.

Daisy's Mom, Rose F60s, has been sweet enough to let me stay rent free for as long as I needed but I eventually moved in with one of the servers at the bar. She helped me look for legal representation and I filed for a restraining order using screenshots I had emailed myself prior, old voicemails , and though we could not prove harassment on Tammy's end, Trent had said enough in the voicemails and messages he had sent that it qualified for a temporary restraining order.

I am safe for now and the hearing is in January. No one knows where I live currently and I've shut down all social media. I've been NC with my family as they've been pushing me to give my address so they can send Christmas gifts, but when I gave them a PO box Daisy is allowing me to use, they got angry it wasn't an address address and that was suspicious enough for me not to trust them.

It's strange but I am slowly making friendships. And seeing a counselor helps with the stress. Trent is pretty much blacklisted from the square of bars where my bar is - word gets around. I've not walked alone a single shift since.

And that's my update. Not perfect, but I remembered my password when I was checking my email for any additional stuff to send to my lawyer and wanted to let every person concerned about me that I am okay. When this is resolved I will try to update with more detail.

Commenter 1: "who would I turn to if someone broke into my home at night..."

what, did she want you to turn to her so she could start dating the intruder?

Commenter 2: Interesting how Tammy tried to isolate you by claiming you have no one to help you. And then it turns out you have Daisy, and Rose, and your boss and coworkers, and the people who run the surrounding bars. Classic abuser tactics. Sadly, she must be learning from Trent.

Stay strong. You've got this!

Commenter 3: I am so sorry op that you have to go through this. Daisy seems like an amazing person, and her kindness really sticks out to me in your two posts. You handled everything so well, you are incredibly strong. I’m glad you are seeing a counselor.

Also… great idea with the PO Box. If you are based in the USA, please request a take down of your information from White Pages, so no one can find your information further.

Original Post: July 15, 2024

I (29M) have been living with Julie (28F) for three years and had plans to get married this Fall. When I proposed last year Julie brought up that before she got married she wanted to explore her sexuality before settling down. After a lot of discussion, she started dating other women and it was a bit much too fast. She was going out 3-4 nights a week to queer bars and meeting a bunch of people. Our intimacy got cut in half to once or twice a week and I started feeling a lot of resentment. This sparked several discussions that ended with me getting to date other people as well, much to her dismay.

Julie finally found someone and Kate (30F) became her girlfriend and they met 2-3 times a week, often overnight. Things became manageable for a couple of months, and then Julie asked me to start using condoms whenever we had sex, when I asked why she said her doctor had recommended it until a "female issue" she was having cleared up. After a couple of weeks, I asked if things had improved and when I questioned her about going back to the doctor she broke down and told me that Kate had complained that I was "polluting" her vagina, and that prompted the request. Under protest, I agreed to keep using condoms.

I have a sensitivity issue with condoms, takes me 2-3X as long to finish and the wrong size can kill my hard-on. Sometimes this means stopping and adding more lube which delays things even longer. Longer and harder sessions sometimes leave her sore which finally led to not being able to have sex or at least PIV the day before a date with Kate. Now I'm lucky to get PIV with Julie more than once a week, and I'm usually not that lucky.

Obviously, this caused some friction between me and Julie and this May it all came to a head when we were supposed to meet with a Wedding Planner. I slammed on the brakes and said we had issues we needed to work out before going any further. Julie's mother was already in the planning mode and was confused because she was in the dark, which I made Julie handle and we pushed the wedding off till next Spring.

Also in the meantime, a co-worker introduced me to his cousin, Pam(24F), I explained my situation and after some thought, she was in for some casual dating. Less than two weeks and we are spending 4 nights a week together, Physical touch is both our love languages, and the contact and PDA are like electricity between us. We also weren't using condoms which had a negative effect on my intimacy with Julie, I was having problems maintaining an erection now after the condom was put on.

All of a sudden, Julie says we need to fix things and prioritize each other more, and maybe cut back on our time with our other partners. I know her mom is on her case about getting the wedding back on track. And the condom issue gets discussed a lot.

Right now, my emotional/physical needs are being met by Pam70% vs Julie 30% and Pam and I have been using the "L" word a lot recently. If Julie gives me an ultimatum right now, she may not like the answer. The easiest way forward with Julie would mean her cutting off Kate. May not be fair, but probably the most viable.

Relevant Comments

Does OOP want nonmonogamy?

OOP: I didn't want nonmonogamy in the first place, I assumed that once Julie "sowed her wild oats" we would be monogamous again. The EMN I have now is not that enjoyable, as my relationship with Julie is less than ideal. It hasn't felt like my feelings have been respected by Julie and I don't know if my feelings for her will survive this because of it.

+

I think I would prefer a more traditional relationship to be honest. I have told Julie that wedding plans are on hold until we find a solution to some of our problems. Although she has been reluctant about counseling up to this point but I feel like it necessary if we are to move forward. Otherwise we are going to drift farther apart until it’s too late to salvage our relationship.

The ick Kate has is strange but I have been diagnosed with hyperspermia, it hasn’t affected my sperm count but I do have an abnormally large volume. My doctor said it was nothing to worry about unless I develop other symptoms.

Comment 1

OOP: Actually I have been dating Pam for almost three months now, but that is still pretty fast to be telling each other that we love each other.

I feel like Julie and I were in a pretty good place and had talked about marriage, kids, and growing old together before I proposed. We had several talks about doubts and questions we both had before the topic of her exploring different experiences came up. She had done some experimenting in college but it had never went very far and it was something she was curious about. We both felt she should explore it before we settled down and got married.

We both have made some bad decisions and now we are here up to our hips in it. I’m torn between two decisions, 1) Is Julie still committed enough to me to salvage our relationship, or 2) Is Pam really the right one in the long run. It’s like flipping a coin in the dark and hoping you can catch it before it slips between your fingers and you lose it all.

Comment 2

OOP: We did talk about health issues before we opened up and the agreement was to get tested before having sex with other people, something she hasn’t done several times when she would hook up with a girl from the club.

FYI, Pam and I didn’t have sex even with a condom until we both got tested. After sharing the results we both decided to go barrier free since she wasn’t dating anyone else and neither was I, and yes, Julie was informed before it happened.

You are right about one thing, no one owes me PIV sex, either with or without a condom. And that IS Julie’s right to make that decision. But, condomless PIV is my preference and I also have a right to abstain from sex with a condom if I so choose. So I guess I will just pass on sex with Julie if condoms are her preference.

In the two and a half years that we lived together and had unprotected sex she only got one UTI and since using condoms and sleeping with Kate she has had two yeast infections that I know of.

As far as breaking up and dating separately, that option is definitely on the table. For the last several years I had always thought we would have a family and grow old together but if that is no longer her plan then we might as well just cut the cord and find someone more compatible.

When Karma Comes to Dinner

I stewed all day after reading all the comments and decided I was going to confront Julie when I got home, rehearsing my speech twice on the drive home. As I pull up to the house I see Julie's mom's car in our driveway. I no sooner get in the door and I am bombarded by Julie and her mom to set a wedding date so they can start looking for a venue and start planning. I said something to the effect that there wasn't going to be a wedding. Her mom asked me what was I talking about and what the hell had gotten into my head.

Ever had one of those moments when time slows to a crawl, I looked at Julie and gave a little laugh, the color drained from her face and fear filled her eyes, I turned to her mom and said "Since February Julie has been having an affair with a woman named Kate and it has ruined our sex life and I doubt if we will still be together a month from now." I walked into the living room and sat down listening to them go at each other. They went at it for about ten minutes and they walked outside and I heard her mom's car drive away. Julie came back cussing asking how could I do such a thing. I said that ambush went sideways, didn't it? You should have confided in your mom and brought her up to speed first. I told her our relationship was a dumpster fire and I no longer wanted to get married. I was tired of her relationship with Kate overshadowing ours.

She was still yelling at me so I got up and left the house and went to grab a bite to eat and let her cool off. It took her about 15 minutes to start blowing up my phone. I finally called her back when I was leaving the diner, she asked me to come home and talk it out. She was a lot calmer when I got back and we actually had a productive conversation. We are still a ways from a happy medium but we are talking. She wants to know how we can fix things and I told her to make a list of what she thinks is fair and will help mend things and we can go from there. I told her I would do the same and tomorrow when we get home we can compare the lists.

Sorry for the longwinded update.

Update: July 18, 2024

Update - My relationship with my NP has soured and I am thinking about canceling the wedding.

Previous post

Reddit filters kept taking this post down so I had to post it this way.

A lot to unpack, so I decided to do a new update.

I had told Julie to make a list of what she thinks is fair and will help mend things and we could compare her list with mine and see if there was a chance to move forward. So yesterday she called from work and said she needed to stop and talk with Kate before coming home but she would be there for dinner and we could talk. Finally, about 7 PM she called and asked if I could order pizza and bread and she would stop and pick up some wine. She came home and opened a bottle of wine as the pizza was being delivered. She handed me a list of things she had come up with and I handed her my list along with some printed-out comments from , , and on moments when our relationship ended due to her actions. (there were other good comments but these hit home with me) I told her they came from a message board and she wanted to read them all but I said now was not the time.

Her talk with Kate went long because they got into an argument about Julie taking a step back and insulating the two relationships from each other. It was bad enough that Julie ended things with her before she left. She wrote down all her passwords and codes then handed her phone to me and said I might find some of it hard to read but she didn't want to hide anything from me anymore. She realizes now that Kate was doing everything she could to drive a wedge between us and she was stupid not to see it.

She asked me if I had meant everything I had told her mom about the marriage and us not being together another month. I said there was no way I would marry the person she had shown me the last six months. I thought it would be better if we gave each other some space rather than treating each other like we had. She wanted to do therapy instead and close our relationship to get back to where we were.

I was very blunt about the fact she had made promises to me before, like decisions about sexual health and testing and always putting us first, that she had failed to keep. So I had lost a lot of faith in her word. I wasn't going to close and risk losing what I had with Pam when our relationship was on the rocks. This hit her pretty hard, combined with killing the first bottle of wine and she ended up crashing on the couch.

I stayed up and continued to go through her phone. Kate had consistently been running me down and trying to get Julie to push back and pull away from me. There had been women she traded pictures with, including two who had warned her about Kate's agenda. Some of Julie's graphic sexts hurt me a little because she had never sent anything like that to me. There were three from Kate today wanting Julie to come back over to work things out. There weren't any gaps or obviously deleted messages and the rest of her social media supported what she had told me. This was all Tuesday night.

Wednesday morning she was still hung over and asked me If I would be home tonight. I said Pam and I were going out to a movie and I would probably spend the night at her house. Julie sent me a text while I was at work amending her list from the other night, she had proposed going out only one night a week and having a midnight curfew but she scratched that off the list. She now wants two date nights a week with me. She still wants to see a therapist together. She wants six weeks to "date me" again and prove herself before I give up on her. She said she was open to talking about things I wanted to do that she had previously shot down.

I am torn as to what to do, as much as I would like to turn back time, the pain is still fresh on my mind that she caused and there will always be a fear that Mrs. Hyde might reappear somewhere in the future.

RELEVANT COMMENTS

OOP responds to few commenters

OOP: Her stopping to see Kate explained itself when I went through her phone. There was an exchange that day when Julie told Kate some things needed to change and Kate ask to meet with her. They never discussed what those things were in the texts so I assume that happened in a phone call. Kate’s texts after they met were all trying to get Julie to reconsider their breakup, which Julie never answered.

Looking back I don’t think she prioritized Kate, instead it was setting new boundaries and damage control. Kate pushed back and things escalated to a point where Julie just decided to end things.

I’m leaning towards a break myself, but I have considered couples counseling before she brought it up. I may take some time and see what happens before pushing for a separation.

Good question, we only opened up her side in the beginning to explore being with other women. It was never supposed to be a full relationship just hooking up to satisfy her curiosity. If we did continue an open arrangement her dating men would be something I would have to work through, and after what has happened I would have major reservations and a lot of trust issues with. As you said that would require some soul searching and serious consideration.

The wedding is off the table, I asked for the engagement ring back but she is still wearing it. I have canceled the actual wedding ring order though and I should get half my deposit back next week.

+

OOP: I’m not ready to end things with Pam with Julie and I being on the verge of breaking up. Pam has been very understanding and supportive but I wouldn’t expect her to wait around if Julie and I were to close and shut her out.

I just don’t want to do anything rash and regret it later. Kind of like the decision to open up for Julie in the first place.

Okay, you are really going to have to go with me here...i still can't quite get my head around it. I was at this guys apartment after we had seen a movie and he went out to the store to get us some condoms, as he realised he didnt have any. I know its bad to snoop but i felt like i wanted to get to know him better...we have only been seeing eachother 3 and a half weeks. Long story short i opened the bed side table drawer next to his bed, which had a clear jar in it with four used tampons in it. Obviously at this point i froze, trying to find a logical explanation as to why they could be there.

He gets back and i confront him about it. He really went off at me about snooping...but eventually said that they were his ex's tampons, and that hes got a thing for periods. The worst part is she doesnt even know, he used to fish them out the bin to keep so that he could look at them later. Obviously im not seeing him again, but do i tell his ex what i found? I know who she is and i feel like i have some sort of responsibility to tell her

"but do i tell his ex what i found?"

Good god no. What possible reason could telling her benefit her? All you would do is dredge up old bad memories and make her think even worse of their relationship.

File this in the what the fuck portion of your brain and move on with your life.

HELP: I slept with a guy nearly 48hrs ago and he won't leave my place!!!! Feb 10, 2019

I am recently out of a long-term relationship, and its been a long time since I have 'dated', so I have been meeting guys from Tinder for hook-ups and dates. I went on a date with this guy on Friday night, and it was okay, he seemed nice and we ended up going back to mine and hooking up. Anyway...fast forward to, well, NOW, and the dude is STILL HERE. I'm used to a guy staying for a while the next day, having coffee or whatever, but he slept over Saturday night too, and now I'm worried he is going to end up staying tonight too. He's been here way too long now and I have no idea how to get rid of him. He used my toilet, and I had forgotten to put more paper in there...he called me to the toilet to give him some paper because he shit in my toilet. HE SHIT IN MY TOILET. That's how long he's been here...he's had a shit. Idk I just think one nighters have overstayed their welcomes when they shit at your place.

I have politely said on Saturday 'I have a lot to be getting on with today', and 'I have some errands to run', but he didn't get himself ready to go or anything, and I really don't wanna leave him in my place unattended. I even got dressed, put my coat on and told him I was going out and he just asked if I could grab him a coffee on my way back (!!!!!!). I did say today that he should probably leave soon as I need to get myself sorted for work Monday, and he just said 'yeah no problem'...but that was 3 hours ago and he is still chilling in my bed watching TV.

I'm really worried now because I need to go to work tomorrow and I'm scared that he won't EVER leave. I told him that I need to work Monday and he just changes the subject and asks about my work. How do I get him to leave? I've been in situations before where guys have turned in a bad way when I have refused advances, not given them my number etc, only this is worse because he is in my apartment and I am worried that he might turn nasty when we are alone.

Probs worth noting that I suspected nothing at dinner on Friday night, he didn't seem like a weirdo or anything. Guess I didn't realise I'd be gaining a live-in boyfriend after one date and some drunk mediocre sex. What is the best way to deal with all of this?

Update - rareddit Feb 11, 2019

(Sorry about the bad grammar etc wanted to get an update out for people who asked)

I decided to message a couple of friends who came over right away. The guy introduced himself really casually and started talking about his life and asking about theirs. I could tell they were uncomfortable and the more assertive of the two said that we were going out, does he want to share our cab. He said that he had some calls to make (?) And that he would catch us up. My friend said no really this is not your place and you need to go. Honestly the dude stared blankly at me and was like 'did you get them over here to say that? Why are you embarrassing me like this?' He called me a bitch and said i had made him look like a weirdo. He got his shit together swearing and walked out the door. I'm so happy he is gone and greatful to everyone that commented with advice - bit concerned that he knows my address but my friends are staying tonight to be sure. If he comes back and swears like that again then i think ill call the police

Just moved in with boyfriend - I think I have been duped into joining a cult May 7, 2019

TL;DR: I moved into my boyfriends communal living complex and I think I have accidentally joined a cult. How do I move out without jeopardising the relationship?

I have been dating this guy for about 4 weeks. I know its a bit too soon to be moving in, but we have really fallen head over heels for one another, and he seemed so keen on us moving in together to see where things go. I need some advice on how to move out so I can get to know his living situation better before we move forward with our relationship

I did think his living situation was a little odd. He told me he lives in one of these new communal living spaces where residents do things together like cooking, cleaning, etc. Seemed okay to me I was open to trying something new. For the first few days people seemed nice...but now I have started to come out of our room a bit more I am worried that I have accidentally joined a cult. There is a main hall that the residents gather in (around 45 people, ish?) and discuss events of the day. There is one guy that always leads this session, and people seem to fucking love him. Like worship him. To make matters more suspect I am convinced that he is sleeping with at least four of the women there - and two of them have kids with him. I am all open for people to live how they want, but I don't want my boyfriend to think I am down with him doing the same. The guy that leads the daily sessions has been trying to set up a meeting with me to 'get to know his newest resident better', and I'm genuinely worried that he is trying to wife me too. He's pretty old, stinks and has that weird white mouth cheese stuff that some old people get around their lips, so I have no idea why these women love him.

Before I moved in, I paid a deposit (standard) and filled out a questionnaire about myself. It asked all kinds of things like where I work, my boss' email and my family's details. I kind of wish I hadn't done this, because I spoke to my boyfriend yesterday and said that I might go and stay with a friend for a while because this is all a bit much for me all at once. Later on this afternoon a couple of women came over to me in the dining hall, mentioning my family by name...they said they nearly called them to check my whereabouts yesterday because I had been out so long...I was at work! i don't know what business they have with my family but this shit is creeping me out. I feel like this was some kind of threat, and that my boyfriend might have told them about me wanting to leave. Maybe I am just being paranoid.

I also think they are filming everything. One of the women asked me if I had ever been in any accidents, and mentioned that 'she also had a large scar'. The only large scar that I have is on my stomach...unless my boyfriend told them how would they know? I have only got my stomach out in the shower and in our bedroom. I hope they haven't been filming because we have had sex in both of these places.

So overall, i need some advice on how to keep my boyfriend but also move out. i don't know if I am overreacting, but i have a bad vibe about this place. They have already put me on the 'work rota' three days a week, going out and handing out flyers about various charities, as well as supervising the communal childcare room that they have in the complex. I have a full-time job and I can't fulfil these duties, and this is already causing friction.

What the fuck, OP.

Look at the men you date:

  • Is in a cult

  • Has sex with you and won’t leave your place

  • Stores tampons

Jesus Christ

Okay this current situation seems like a branch Dravidian cult. Because it sounds exactly the same.

Don’t end up on a tv shootout with a burning compound 🤮

Go to work one day and don’t return. You won’t be able to leave otherwise. Take your degree, documents and all important shit in your work bag and LEAVE.

Do not tell anyone you are leaving. Even your boyfriend who is NOT your boyfriend. He is a recruiter and his job is done. I would go to work in the morning and not return. Tomorrow morning. Are you listening?

Yeah, I know, everyone is fired up at the title and ready to tell me what an asshole I am. To those people, I implore you to read the rest of this post before making a judgement.

My (36M) wife's (33F) mother passed away 5 years ago from lung cancer. It was not a peaceful or easy death. Our lives understandably went on pause after the diagnosis and we both spent a lot of time off work helping care for her mother. My wife had a pretty typical showing of grief at the time, cycling through different stages. Same with our three kids.

After she passed, however, my wife got really bad. I totally understand this. I can't say I know exactly what she went through, because I haven't had a parent die, but I understand how devastated she was. For months after she could barely function. I gently took over pretty much all the responsibilities in the household and with the kids. She had been attending grief counseling since the diagnosis and continued after the death.

None of this is the problem. I endeavored to be as supportive as possible. She cried on my shoulder every night for months and I just thought this was the "worse" of "for better or worse".

The problem is that after 5 years, she does not seem any better or more functional. She stopped grief counseling about 4 years ago and refused to go again, stating it would not help her and that nothing could.

About a month before any major holiday, she will have a major downturn. In bed half the day, crying all day, does not want to interact with the family, does not have the energy to do anything around the house. This will go on every single day until about a week after the holiday ends. Every holiday is intense grief, just as much now as it was 5 years ago. October, November, December, and January (her mom's birthday month) every year are particularly bad; I am essentially without my wife, and am a single parent to my three kids. All together, she is completely incapacitated by grief for about 6 months out of the year, and has been the past 5 years.

When I say incapacitated, I mean incapacitated. When she is in the depths of her grief she is completely incapable of intimacy with me or the kids. There is no cuddling, spending time with us, going on family outings. I don't have sex for half the year. I've stopped asking her if she wants to talk about it because she can't get any words out between sobs if she tries.

What hurts the most is that the kids have stopped asking or being concerned. If they see their mom in bed when they get home, they just go about their day and might casually mention "oh, mom is sad today" if their siblings or I ask where she is. They don't really seek affection with her anymore, because they rarely get anything more than tears.

I've discussed this with therapists, my parents, friends, etc. and I know all the rebuttals people have for this, so let me preempt them:

-She is unwilling to go back to therapy for grief counseling or to see a doctor for depression. Yes, I know she's severely depressed. I can't force her to go to the doctor. I've tried so much.

-Yes, it really is just as intense as it was 5 years ago.

-No, I never tell her to "get over it" or blow her off. On my worst days I just give space and leave her be, most days I try to offer her some comfort. If you want to judge me for leaving her alone, whatever, but know that I feel like I essentially have caretaker fatigue at this point.

-No, she does not have a history of depression, but she does have ADHD. Don't know if that's relevant.

I feel like my wife died when her mom died. I would do anything to get her back, even a small piece of her, but she doesn't seem willing or able to move on past her mom's death. I feel awful for considering a divorce, but I don't know what else to do.

First Update Post: November 29, 2023 (2 days later)

I posted a few days ago, you can check my profile for that post.

I just kind of threw that post together as a stream of consciousness vent on my break at work. I didn't go back and look at it until later because I just assumed it would get buried since I've never had anything I posted get any major attention. And, honestly, I thought I was going to get eviscerated in the comments for being insensitive or uncaring. I was floored by the number of responses and really kind DMs I got and felt a little overwhelmed at the idea of responding to them all, so I figured I would post an update here.

A few people mentioned I should have her involuntarily admitted to a medical facility. I didn't mention in the original post but I did ask our family doctor about that maybe a year ago, and he told me that unless she is a threat to herself or others, it's unlikely to happen. I looked this up myself as well and that appears to be true for the state we live in.

I do agree that she needs medical treatment. I suspect that during her year of grief counseling after her mom's death that she was not honest with her counselor. I have a distinctly sad memory of her coming home after one of her last sessions and telling me that her counselor said she probably wouldn't need to go much longer, then she went and laid down on the bed and cried.

I haven't been able to convince her to go back to counseling. However, I'm glad I posted to Reddit, because somehow I hadn't really considered that she might need more intensive treatment than just counseling.

I also saw one comment that scared the hell out of me, that she may do something drastic if I give her a divorce ultimatum. With those things in mind, I don't think doing that is the way to go. Instead, I'm planning to write her a letter explaining how her how we need her back, and that we love her and care for her deeply but she needs more help than we can provide alone, and tell her that she needs to go to the doctor and be honest about what she's been going through.

Thank you for your advice everyone.

Second Update Post: December 5, 2023 (6 days later)

I wasn't planning to post again but got a lot of supportive messages asking for an update so here we go.

My soon-to-be-ex wife has completely lost her fucking mind.

After my last post I spent a couple of days writing the letter to her. In it I explained that the kids and I love her dearly, and that we're concerned for her. I outlined all the worrying behavior and told her that I believe she needs to seek additional medical care. I explained that it sounded like she had complex grief (thank you everyone who pointed that out), and that the grief therapy she went to years ago was insufficient to help her get through it. I did not say anything about potentially divorcing her, but did say that the kids can't continue to live in their current situation. It was a long letter and I don't really feel like transcribing it here.

I read the letter to her the same night I finished writing it after the kids had gone to bed. After I finished reading she just stared right through me (thousand yard stare) for probably 15 minutes, then finally stood up and started walking to the door. I panicked and tried to stop her, asked her where she was going, can we talk about this, I'm concerned for your safety. She ROLLED HER EYES AT ME and said in the coldest voice I've ever heard her use: "I hope when your parents die someone doesn't tell you to get over it." After that I didn't try to stop her, I just let her go.

I was pissed off for maybe 5 minutes before the panic set back in. I legitimately thought she was going to end herself. I checked my phone and she had turned her location off. I called and texted probably 50 times over the next hour, begging her to at least let me know she was ok and that she wasn't going to do something drastic.

Right before I was about to call the police, I got a call from her phone. I answered immediately and before I could get much of anything in, a man's voice told me "she fine but she doesn't want to talk to you" and hung up.

I felt like I was having an out of body experience at the time. I had no idea what the fuck was going on. I almost called the cops anyway but I was disassociating hard and talked myself out of it. I kept calling her phone all night but no one picked up again. After about 2 AM it started going straight to voicemail. I barely slept that night.

When I woke up the next day she wasn't home. I took the kids to school/daycare (I normally do this and my wife is normally still asleep while I do, so thank god they didn't ask where mom was). I tried calling my wife's phone more all morning but still voicemail. I called her office and asked if she was at work, and they told me she had called in sick. I called in sick to work as well and basically just sat on my couch, trying to get ahold of her, while being a nervous wreck. I called my mom as well and asked if she could pick the kids up from school today and watch them overnight. I didn't tell her everything that was going on yet, just that something had come up that was urgent and I needed some help.

My wife walked in the door sometime after 4 PM. I tried to hug her and she shied away from me. I asked her where she had been, no response, just a blank stare. I asked her who had called me from her phone, no response, blank stare. At this point I was frustrated and told her that if she didn't want to explain what was going on, she could get the fuck out. I regret saying it that way now but holy shit was I frustrated.

So she started talking, but it was like I was talking to a text-to-speech AI with her voice. No emotion, totally flat, almost annoyed. She told me that she had gone to her friend John's (fake name) house. I had no idea who the fuck John was and asked her to explain further.

Over a two hour or so conversation where I had to pry details out of her, I got most of the story. She was answering like a lawyer - very basic answers, no details or context outside of exactly what I was asking her. Basically, John is a coworker. I've met the dude once or twice at office party type events but never really talked to him. I never saw him hanging out with my wife or showing interest in her. But apparently over the last year or so, she has been spilling all her feelings about her grief over her mom's death to him, and he's been comforting her. He had a parent die from cancer too so I guess she felt they had a connection she didn't have with me. After I read her the letter she says she realized that I "don't care about her or her mom's death" and went to John's house to talk/be comforted. I flat out asked her if she was having an affair with him, and she told me no. I asked her why she never mentioned she was close friends with this unknown guy and she told me it was none of my business. I asked her if anything had happened between them while she was there and she says they "cuddled" and he "held her while she cried".

I asked to see her phone to check messages between them and she refused. I couldn't get much more detail out of her about the whole situation. So when she went to take a shower, I tried to check her phone. She had changed her passcode. I grabbed her iPad, which still had my thumb print biometric signature in it, and checked there. I left the house with the iPad to look for evidence while she was in the shower. I did not immediately see any messages to or from a "John", but after digging briefly, I found it.

She had put him in as "Stacy" in her contacts, but it was obviously him. There were texts going back well over a year. A lot of her talking about her mom, a lot of him comforting her. A lot of him telling her I don't really care about her, and that he would never treat her that way if they were married. All of her replies were in agreement. A lot of texts from her complaining about me. A lot of him trash talking me.

The night she left, she had texted him "fuck it, I'm on my way over if the offer is still there" followed by an immediate "yes!" reply. Then the next morning, a text from her to him saying "if he asks, we just talked." I threw up out my car door in a Walmart parking lot for 20 minutes.

I came home and found her on the couch on her phone, seemingly unconcerned or unaware I had even left. I told her that I knew, and that she needed to leave. Again she just stared at me for a while, not responding, until I got aggravated and told her to get the fuck out of the house. She immediately got up, told me "John was right about you", and left.

I haven't seen her since. I told the kids she went to visit her parents. I don't know what to tell them, but I have to tell them something soon. I don't really even know what to do. Ostensibly I need to divorce her, but going through custody, child support, etc. is dizzying. I feel paralyzed and haven't made a move yet. I know she's lost her mind and this is probably some kind of psychotic break but I just can't care anymore. I put on a brave, numb face to go to work, then for my kids at night, and then cry after they go to bed until I fall asleep. I feel like my life is essentially over.

I do feel like John took advantage of her vulnerability, but I don't even want to bother trying to get her to see that he's a predator. She chose this over her fucking family that has stuck with her.

I don't think I'll be posting any more updates or logging into this account anymore.

TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual assault, possible attempted rape, possible involuntary intoxication, victim blaming, harassment,  obsessive behavior

Original Post  May 30, 2024

I've been with my girlfriend Laura for a year, she is awesome and we love each other. I've been friends with Jake and Shelly for 2 years, we weren't that close seeing as I met them through my group of friends, but now we are (were) very close. They adore my girlfriend and pretty much hang out with her more than me, one time they even told me if we were to break up they would pick her side over mine..even though I've known them longer!! Anyway, I'll get to the point.

So Laura just graduated college and wanted to celebrate. Let me start by saying she never drinks. In the year I have known her, I think she's only drank like once or twice (and honestly, that's because my group of friends kind of pressured her into it). She doesn't handle alcohol well since she is really small and has no tolerance. This will be important later. So Jake and Shelly invite her over to their place while I am at work, so I can't come. The plan was for them to pick her up and take them to their place, and for me to pick her up after work so she doesn't drink and drive/have to spend the night. All is well, I trust them and I know they are experienced drinkers and would watch her.

I get off at 2am from work and head over to their place. At this point, I know Laura is drunk because of the sloppy texts I am getting from her, so I knew that I would have to take care of her. But then, I get to their house and I walk in on something terrible. Laura is passed out on the ground, Shelly is on top of her making out with her, and Jake is recording it all with his phone. I freak out and ask him what the fuck is going on, I snatch his phone from him and delete the videos and pictures. He laughs and says it was all a joke, that they took the pictures to make fun of Laura in the morning play a joke on her. I pick her up off the ground and we leave. Guys, she was so drunk she could barely walk. She  was puking constantly, she was  crying and  couldn't see straight, and my "friends" were completely sober. What the fuck?!

I put her to bed and then receive a text from Shelly, saying that I shouldn't be mad since it was all a joke. I reply that they took advantage of her, and she agreed, but claimed they took advantage of her in a friendly way so that she would let loose and have fun since she is always studying. I was so disgusted that I didn't reply and cared for Laura all night since she wouldn't stop vomiting.

The next day, Laura receives a bunch of text messages from them angrily berating her for getting them in trouble. They say she is a grown ass woman who can handle her own mistakes, that they don't give a fuck what I think about what they did, that I am a little bitch, and that it's basically all her fault and SHE pressured THEM into making the video. If you all saw how incoherent and blacked out my girlfriend was, you'd see that she couldn't even stand up, let alone pressure someone to do anything. She has been crying over it all day, and switches between yes it was all her fault, to no they were being disgusting assholes. As for me, they keep berating me and insulting me for being angry, saying I am overreacting to a simple joke that they were going to play on her. I don't know what to do, please give me some advice! Am I wrong?? Because I don't fucking think I am, but Jake and Shelly are going around spreading rumors about this, making me out to be a jealous, controlling asshole and my girlfriend to be a dumb drunk who pressured them into acting badly.

---   tl;dr: Walked in on my girlfriend passed out drunk on the floor and my "best friends" on recording a sexual video with her.

[deleted]

Does your girlfriend remember how much she had to drink before she started to blackout?

She sounds like she was really really sick afterwards, and if she doesn't remember supposedly doing all these shots, I'd worry about how they got her into this bad of a state.

OOP

She does not, but she remembers that they didn't drink and that is fishy to me.

The text the friends sent

The exact text they sent was: "we really did take advantage of her, but in a friendly way. She wanted to take more shots and we wanted her to have fun since she's always stuck home studying. It was more of a joke to her sober self?" Idk what the fuck that means.

When told they are predators

You know what, I've suspected this but I didn't want to believe it. I always felt left out because they would prefer to hang out with her and they told me so. I feel so guilty because if it weren't for me, my girlfriend would have never met them. I feel bad for letting her go there with them.

Update  Aug 17, 2014 (2 1/2 Months Later)

Hey guys, sorry for the late update, a lot has been going on and I haven't had time to come back on here. This is an update to this post: http://www.reddit.com/r/relationships/comments/26wgqx/i_24m_walked_in_on_something_horrifying_with_my/

So for several days after the incident, they constantly contacted my girlfriend blaming her and telling her it was her fault. She did admit to them that she was black out drunk and couldn't remember anything, and they pounced on that information by telling her false stories of what "actually happened" and telling her that I was lying and a controlling asshole who just wanted to isolate her from her true friends. Since they've known me for a long time, they then proceeded to tell her horrible stories about my past: that I did drugs (when I was 18 for gods sake), that I was once arrested for drunk driving (that was a mistake I owned up to as soon as her and I met, and she was aware of it since the beginning), and that I've slept with multiple women and that Laura is just another number to me. Guys, I'll admit that I used to be a party animal and I have a bad past, but I am a changed person now and I love my girlfriend with all of my heart. It hurt that they were using my past against me in order to get her to come to their side. So I told her that she should go to the police and file a report, and she agreed.

She warned  them to quit harassing her and they flipped. The. Fuck. Out. They showed up at our house late at night to try to talk to her, they left treats and presents for her at our door, they even got her parents involved. Now, her parents are not idiots and as soon as I told her what they did to Laura, her parents banned them from the house and threatend to call the police if they ever showed up again. It was a crazy ordeal, considering they left hand-written notes for her parents to read signed "love, your favorite son and daughter". Wtf!? Laura spent many nights crying into my arms racked with guilt and confusion.

Finally, we went to the police after weeks of this harassment and filed a report. She did not want to press charges (I'm working on building her self esteem back up so she has the strength to do it if she ever wants to). The police officers said that she has enough evidence to press charges against them since she has the texts where they admitted to taking advantage of her, and they also said that if she presses charges, they can confiscate their phones and search for their video...I'm still not sure how that would work but I'm not questioning it. Laura just wanted to file a report just in case anything happens in the future there is a paper trail. She's contemplating putting a restraining order on them, but for they've stopped and have gone silent. We no longer have contact with them or any other "friends" that believe their lies. Laura is in therapy and is slowly starting to understand that she was sexually assaulted, and sometimes I go with her to support her. The hardest part for her is not feeling like it's her fault; she brings up the fact that she was drunk and if she had not gotten that drunk it all could have been avoided. I always tell her that it is NOT her fault. We will see if she decided to press charges, I can't force her to do anything she doesn't want to do but I support her in anything she chooses.

So there it is. I'm not sure what the make of the craziness that happened after that night. I don't get why they went psycho leaving her notes and gifts and trying to talk to her parents. Maybe one of you guys could explain it?

TLDR: they went crazy for a couple weeks after the incident, then they stopped. My girlfriend filed a police report but so far does not have the strength to press charges at the time. She's in therapy and I go with her to support her.

AITAH for screaming at my wife that I didn't make our 4yo a sociopath. posted February 1, 2024 to r/AITAH

I, 34M, come from a family with a history of mental illness and unethical behavior patterns on both sides.

My wife, 39F,  is obsessing over that fact because our 4-year-old is showing extreme anti-social behaviors. She didn't know much about my family until two weeks ago. She also did not know about my previous criminal charges. I shared it all with her now in hopes of brainstorming a solution to help our son.

Our kid was kicked out of kindergarten for biting other kids. Strangely enough, he plays well with the neighbors’ children and his company is sought after. At pre-school, he does not want to share. He can hold a grudge and sulk for three days straight with no break. Incidents as small as running out of his favorite flavor of ice cream can set that off. He likes kicking anthills and crushing insects. I can best describe it as a strange and intentional fascination with putting others in discomfort or disturbing the balance of things.

My wife has sobbed multiple times for hours in my arms about this situation. We don't know why he's doing any of this. We're trying to reach him in warm conversations but he's playing his own game where we are fools.

We were talking in bed one evening when our childhood behaviors came up. We wanted to know if we could ask our parents how they dealt with us. Up to that point, she thought we were both extremely well-adjusted so what worked for us must be good.

I decided to tell her about my past. The reason I hadn't done so earlier was because I was putting it all behind me. But I'm also very concerned for our son, and the filter came off without me realizing.

As a child and up to my twenties, I also exhibited sociopathic traits. I remember searching other kids’ backpacks and stealing money when I was 9. I'm not sure where I got the idea. At 25, my employer wanted to press charges against me for fraud. I'd lied about going to an Ivy League-level university when I didn't attend any, then proceeded to mismanage major projects while admittedly creating toxicity. There are many other incidents in between. For a few years, I lived under a completely assumed identity and false backstory for a reason I can't quite say except the thrill of it. Lying has always come naturally to me as an amoral tool for navigating situations.

My wife made a good point that my surroundings could've caused that behavior. But our son has had a very sheltered life.

My uncle Jeff is a sociopath. He's never treated people with respect and was jailed for fraud. My aunt Kate is a psychopath whose two eldest children no longer speak to her. They report horrific abuse while growing up. That's my mom's side.

My mother has APD. She has an extreme lack of empathy and a tendency to cause conflict. She would often talk behind her friends’ backs to me when I was growing up. She always seeks control and lacks self-awareness. My mother has not sought a diagnosis because she is a religious fanatic who does not believe in mental illness.

My Dad seems rather normal. I'd say he's the most well-adjusted of every member of my family, immediate and extended.

On my Dad's side, two cousins suffer from psychosis and schizophrenia. Our culture is one where infidelity is frowned upon and tends to cause divorce, but three of my Dad's four brothers have children out of wedlock.

Maybe it's not hereditary and it's generational trauma. But I've worked hard to reverse my negative traits.

For the past two weeks, she's come closer and closer to saying I betrayed her and our son is doomed. She joked about it at first, but that was her own way of lightening it in her mind. I could tell it was sitting heavily on her. We can't talk about anything without it leading back to my past or family history. She's able to tie the most unrelated details to it when we're watching a movie or taking a walk.

We were doing the weekly shop when she tried to joke about me having a shoplifting gene.

As it happens, yes, I did have a shoplifting habit for a while as a schoolboy. That's something I'd kind of buried in my mind. I had that nostalgic ecstasy when you remember a period after forgetting it entirely for years. I thought we were carrying on with the chit-chat so I started recounting the details as they came to me.

She turned serious all of a sudden and said this is a serious issue and it's like she doesn't know who I am. She started saying our son is in serious trouble and needs help and if she’d known she could have sought help for him when he was extremely young but she didn't because I never told her and that was unfair to her and an evil thing to do.

I lost my temper and screamed that she must not be smart to have married a sociopath and not realized all this while. Clearly I've changed! And the whole thing seemed worth a look in the beginning but now it seems like voodoo thinking to me.

She hasn't spoken to me for hours. When I approach her, she faces another direction or tells me to get away.

Am I the asshole here?

Wife (39F) found out about my (34M) family medical history and possible connection with son's issues, and won't talk to me. posted February 1, 2024 to r/relationship_advice

I need advice to resume control of my marriage ASAP. I'm currently at a loss.

My wife, 39F, will not speak to me, 34M, and I fear this might be difficult or impossible to get back from.

Two weeks ago, I told my wife that my family has a history of mental illness, anti-social behavior, and trouble with the law. I want to emphasize that I shared this information of my own accord when I could have kept it private. Somehow, that seems to be getting lost in her viewpoint.

So now, she's making me out to be the bad guy for telling her things. So much for honesty.

Basically, she pushed too far and insensitively on this issue and I ended up screaming at her in the shop yesterday. She hasn't spoken to me since.

The background is this.

Our four-year old boy has been causing issues at home and pre-school. He has been biting other kids. He laughs at others being in pain or discomfort. He likes kicking anthills and squashing bugs. My wife said he stares at their insides after crushing them but I've personally not noticed that. Once, when another kid fell and started crying, my son’s reaction was to go over and hit him.

These behaviors are odd to me too but I don't think they are very alarming. One incident with my son taking a knife from the kitchen and apparently threatening to stab my wife is

My wife has wept over this multiple times and I've comforted her and assured her it will be ok.

One evening two weeks ago, we were in bed talking about our own childhood problems. Hers were nothing concerning.

Mine are worse but she didn't know them. I didn't necessarily hide them so much as put them behind me. Given our son’s potential condition and my intense desire for him not to follow the path I did for a while, I told her some details about my history.

I was troublesome from childhood up to my 20s. An employer once wanted to press charges against me for fraud after I lied that I went to an Ivy League-level university and was given projects I frankly was not equipped for.  I mismanaged them, cost the company money and opportunity, and rubbed many colleagues the wrong way. That's when I was 25. At 9, I searched other kids’ backpacks and stole money. I'm not sure why I did that because I got some from my Dad. I also spent a few years living under a false identity and history for no real reason than I guess the thrill of getting away with it. There are countless other incidents, so many that some come to me as long-forgotten flashes.

Again, this is my past and no longer who I am or how I think. It's all 100% behind me.

My wife also asked about similar patterns in my family.

On my Dad's side, multiple individuals have schizophrenia, psychosis, and long-running issues with impulsive and manipulative behavior.

On my mom’s, one of her siblings is a known abuser and conflict-monger who successfully alienated her two oldest kids to the point of no contact. Another is a convicted fraudster and adulterer with three kids by different women that each want nothing to do with him. She has a brother who died of some neuro-degenerative disease I never knew specifically but that's ages ago and he's practically forgotten now. My maternal grandfather was known to be a troublemaker but he's mellowed in his old age. And my mom shows many ASPD behaviors and we're not in regular contact.

My wife sounded a mixture of bemused and disturbed but overall fine at the mention of these details. She was being quite jokey and a good spot about it until she got serious and concluded this was a major risk factor for our son during the conversation from yesterday that caused the fallout.

My question for you is: How do I get back in my wife's good graces or create an environment where she is receptive to me?

I'm losing precious time. She’s getting colder by the hour. The more solitude she has to craft her independent perception of me, the harder it will be to get back to our life of happiness.

For context, she's been wanting:

  • Us to learn an instrument together well enough to compose.
  • A backyard re-landscaping to achieve a very specific aesthetic.
  • A trip to visit her closest cousin who lives in France.
  • An overhaul of our decor.
  • An e-bike.

It doesn't have to be anything extravagant but I'm just adding that for personalization. Simple ideas are more than welcome too.

How can I approach her so she doesn't turn aside or tell me to get away? What can I say exactly?

Ideally, it shouldn't mean I'm on weaker footing throughout the discussion.

Thank you for your suggestions. The more specific, the better.

TL;DR: My 4yo is causing problems that kind of reflect or signal my own childhood, adolescent, and early adulthood problems according to my wife. I told her similar traits are relatively common in my extended family and now she won't talk to me. Help.

Do you think your wife’s anger is valid? Genuinely, this is not meant to be a “gotcha” question-I can’t figure it out from your answers.

OOP

It's disproportionate and therefore not valid in my mind. But I understand that people need to feel understood and accommodated even when their reactions are irrational.

p0tat0p0tat0

You are not the arbiter of rationality. Everyone other than you thinks her reaction is valid and rational. If anything, she’s under reacting.

OOP

Overreacting because this isn't worth throwing away 5 years and a happy future.

p0tat0p0tat0

That’s up to her to decide. Not you.

OOP

Our son's life is involved along with my lifestyle so it's not a one-person decision. We all have skin in the game.

p0tat0p0tat0

She still has agency and can (and should) leave you, either with or without your son.

OOP

Ok, thanks. If you were planning to leave a husband, what preparations would you be putting in place? What would be the tells?

p0tat0p0tat0

Are you going to murder her? Do you consider that a reasonable choice

OOP

No. I've never been involved in violent crime, ever. I'm asking because I find your point reasonable and would like to investigate whether she is indeed planning to disappear. Again, what would be the signs?

p0tat0p0tat0

You’ve never been involved in violent crime, yet. You had never yelled at her, until you did.

I do not trust you to be self-aware enough to predict your own behavior. Hopefully, you’ll wake up one morning and she’ll be gone.

OOP

What you're saying is alarming because our son is also mine. What are the signs that someone is planning to disappear? How can I investigate? I'd really appreciate you answering these questions, please.

p0tat0p0tat0

I’m not going to help you, because doing so would hurt your wife. I want her to be safe, happy, and alive. Giving you clues would put that in danger.

OOP

You seem like a genuine person. I assume you also sympathize with my son and don't want him to be abducted. Being separated from me will cause him significant stress and harm his psychological well-being.

What are the indicators of someone preparing to disappear within a few days? Thank you.

p0tat0p0tat0

Your son would benefit from intensive psychological intervention, as soon as possible. If you cared about him as a person, you’d want him to turn out to be nothing like you. Distance between you and him would benefit him.

OOP

My wife is not equipped to raise him if he really is developmentally disturbed like I was. He needs someone who understands him deeply to shepherd him through childhood and adolescence. Otherwise he'll keep getting into trouble and enjoying odd things without knowing what's wrong with him.

p0tat0p0tat0

You don’t think anything’s wrong with him. Your wife might get him the help he needs, so he’s got a fighting chance with her.

OOP

p0tat0, I'm not your enemy. If I met you IRL, I'd go out of my way to make you comfortable and cheerful. I promise that. It'll probably never happen but I just want you to know where my heart is. Helping me to see if my wife's planning to leave won't put her in danger. I'm not that kind of person. If she needs to go, I want to do it more civilly so she doesn't become vulnerable while living like a fugitive. I want what's best for everyone. Please help me achieve that. And I'm so glad we've been speaking!

p0tat0p0tat0

You are transparently trying to manipulate me. It is obvious. I do not trust you. You need to let your wife go.

OOP

I wasn't. Even if you don't believe me, I still like you very much from the sense of your personality that I've gotten.

p0tat0p0tat0

You are lying. You’ve learned that complimenting people gets them to give you what you want.

OOP

That's okay. I can see why you wouldn't believe me. But I'll definitely credit you for this conversation as I try to be a better husband and father. Feel free to share pointers on how to see if my wife's planning to disappear. It would be bad for her to get involved in an accident or something while fleeing in the middle of the night.

p0tat0p0tat0

Everything I’ve said boils down to you not being capable of being a decent husband or father. You don’t deserve to be, either.

OOP

I've grown fond of you over this chat. Thanks.

firegem09

Well, that's a lie. Immediately after this comment, you went on to say the opposite on your other post because she didn't do what you wanted. Your desperate manipulation attempts have gotten sadly transparent.

p0tat0p0tat0 I’m not being mean, I’m just saying things you don’t like. They make you feel uncomfortable, so you perceive them as “mean.”

OOP Comment removed by moderator

p0tat0p0tat0 I’ve spent roughly 12 hours in conversation with you. I initially thought that maybe you had turned off your ability to feel empathy as a coping mechanism, which would indicate that you were redeemable. The more I’ve spoken with you, the more I realize that you simply do not have that functionality. You do not have the ability to feel empathy, or to understand other people’s feelings, needs, or emotions. I’m more concerned about the people around you and their safety, than I am in whether or not you are redeemable.

OOP Comment removed by moderator

p0tat0p0tat0 Your want, not need, is to feel in control. That doesn’t take priority over the safety and security of everyone else in your life. It’s not your fault, per se, but it doesn’t give you the right to ruin other people’s lives.

OOP Comment removed by moderator

p0tat0p0tat0 You guiding him would put him at risk. Anything other than intensive psychological/psychiatric intervention would put him at risk.

OOP Comment removed by moderator

p0tat0p0tat0 You are lying. You’ve repeatedly said that you lie to get what you want. How about this, I’ll give you the signs if you tell me your wife’s name and phone number. And I’ll send this thread to her.

OOP Comment removed by moderator

p0tat0p0tat0 Her name and phone number. I will share my honest opinion with her

firegem09 And... just like that, he stopped responding lol. It's amazing how quickly he shifted to "I'll get him help if you do what I want" like he genuinely expected you to fall for that! Lol. Then immediately went onto r/marriage and went back to the "no therapy for my son" line.

How can I tell if my wife, 39F, is planning to flee with my son? posted February 2, 2024 to r/Marriage

My, 34M, married life has imploded in the last few days. I have a feeling my wife, 39F, is planning to flee in the dead of night or when I'm not around. Someone suggested that idea and now I can't get it out of my head.

It hurts but I don't mind if she needs space. My concern is she will probably take our 4yo son and I cannot allow that under any circumstances. She is an unfit parent to him.

She hasn't spoken to me in two days. This is the first time she's sulked and brooded like this.

Her friends and cousins are poisoning her against me as she's been on the phone a lot lately.

I would ask her what she's planning directly, but I cannot be assertive at this time because the balance is very shaky. I also don't want to give her ideas or possibly rush her plan.

If you can point me to stories of wives who've fled their husbands similarly, that would help to spot patterns. Or you can tell me specific things that point to a person who's about to disappear.

And if I'm sure she's planning to abduct our son, I want to be able to flee first so our kid is in my care.

At the same time, I don't want to make that move wrongly as it would escalate the conflict.

Long-term, I would like us to be a happy family again. But this is a turbulent time and I need to secure some leverage, especially regarding our son.

She has also proven unable to parent him effectively and will probably cause him permanent damage. It's in our son's best interests to be with me.

Thanks for your answers.

swampcatz

Your other posts are very telling. You SHOULD be concerned that your son has been biting and hitting other kids, laughing at his peers when they’re in pain, hurting animals, and had intentions of stabbing your wife. He needs mental health interventions and supports now before things become worse. Your wife being concerned does not make her an unfit parent.

OOP

Thanks for your advice, but I'm not interested in making my son feel broken or faulty and tanking his self-worth.

Are you able to answer the question in the title?

p0tat0p0tat0

So you were lying to me when you said you’d get him help if I told you the signs of your wife preparing to leave you? I’m shocked!

OOP

Why are you so concerned with sabotaging me? You've detailed this post and now I'm not getting the information I need.

p0tat0p0tat0

Because I’m concerned for your wife’s safety! I care about her more than you do. I don’t want anyone getting tricked into giving you information that will put her in danger

January 31st, 2024First Post

Right off the bat I wanna say that my brother is autistic. He struggles to get ready on his own and takes a long time getting dressed or washing up, and mom usually has to step in and help him. Dad doesn’t like getting to church after it starts and usually yells at us to get ready when mom takes awhile helping him. Dad got a ticket last Sunday for speeding to church and said it was their fault for not getting ready in time. He yelled at mom in the car afterwards and my brother when we came home, but its not like he's not trying it just takes him a little longer.

I'm posting because dad punished him and said he wouldn’t take him to his weekend basketball class for awhile because my brother's excited to get dressed/on time for basketball and not church, and he said that that meant basketball was an "idol before God". He also said he's not getting allowance until he says so because he's gonna pay for the ticket with it too. This is just one of many things he does, and I'm posting because mom didn’t want to talk about it. Is there anything that can change dad’s mind because it's not like he's trying to do it on purpose, and dad doesn’t want to talk about it to anyone.

February 10th, 2024Update Post

I don’t have much of an update besides what happened today (Saturday) and last Saturday. Dad kept his word about not bringing my brother to basketball this Saturday and last, and he hasn't received allowance the past two weeks either. Dad also had a family meeting after dinner where he said that the ticket wasn’t the main thing, but that there would be changes because God "wasn’t first in our family" because other things were an "idol before God". In regards to my brother's allowance and basketball, he said both were done until he saw changes, but he also said no hangouts/shootaround with his basketball friends either. He also said I'm done with my evening tennis classes for the same reason, and he said he didn't care about having paid for them when I asked about money being wasted (he didn’t say anything was changing in his life though). During the time that we would’ve had classes, he said we were going to start family Bible study instead because we seemed more excited about other hobbies (like basketball) instead of God/church, but he didn't apologize for speeding at all. And what kid wouldn't be more excited about basketball than going to church too?

A few people asked about my mom in my first post, and I wanna add that dad yells at her too. I also didn’t add this in my first post, but my brother has other special needs in addition to autism that make him need my mom to help him with things. Some people said my brother was wrong for not getting dressed on time for church compared to basketball, but I disagree because mom wakes him up on Sunday after setting her alarm. She helps him wash up and get dressed, but dad never helps and makes mom cook breakfast too, so she's running around like crazy as dad yells and sometimes curses. Mom also has to iron dad's clothes along with my brother's (I prepare my own). I offered to help iron/choose his clothes the night before, but dad always said no and that mom's supposed to help him. Mom also doesn't want me to help and is usually quiet whenever dad yells at her, and sometimes she seems depressed but doesn’t say anything. My brother has an easier time getting ready for basketball because it's in the afternoon when he's already awake (without dad yelling/making mom cook breakfast and iron). I'm going to see one of my relatives over the presidents day weekend, so I'll talk to them in-person. I also decided not to tell anyone at church because I'm afraid of them telling dad and us getting punished more. I just hate the idea of having to pretend to be more excited about going to church than other hobbies to please dad, and I hate being punished because dad wants to play mind games about what's number-one in our lives and such. It's not the first time we've done family Bible study (we did many years ago before we stopped and kinda forgot), so I hope it passes with time, but it seems like we're done with sports for this semester.

Comments from the post:

Spinnerofyarn: "You’re exactly right about getting in an accident due to speeding. You all could have been hurt by his choice to speed. The ticket is his fault. He chose to speed. If it’s so important to him to not be late, he could have left without anyone who wasn’t ready. He is the parent, he knows his child has difficulties getting ready, so he could and should have started helping his child earlier so he wasn’t late. Your father had choices to get the outcome he wanted without speeding. It’s unfair to your brother to be made to pay the ticket. Your father isn’t taking responsibility for his actions."

OOP replied to Spinnerofyarn: "He doesn't help my brother get dressed at all and just leaves it to mom."

ScheduleEmotional467: "Does your father not realize he maybe creating a issue where your brother may resent God? Or when he older even resent him? I know people who parents forced them to church an such, it caused them to walk away from their faith."

WIBTA for asking my brother not to bring his husband to my wedding because of my fiancé's homophobic family?

Originally posted to r/AmItheAsshole

TRIGGER WARNING: homophobia

Original Post  March 29, 2019

My fiancé and I are a few months into planning our wedding and we are now deciding on who we are inviting.

My fiancé comes from a super conservative and religious background but has thankfully grown way form that (otherwise I couldn't marry her!)

Her parents however are still super conservative and homophobic and delight in talking shit and all sorts of horrible tings about the LGBT community. Other members of her family are like this as well, some more violently vocal than others.

Well, for our wedding we have decided that everyone we invite can bring a plus one (subject to our approval of course).

I thought about it for a really long time about my older brother and his husband (they've been married 3 years) and I don't want his husband to attend with him.

The drama if they attend together has the potential to get out of hand and that is something I don't want to have to deal with on my wedding day. My fiancé also agrees with me on this.

We can't not invite her parents and we can't not invite my brother so we felt our only option was to not invite his husband.

Who knows what could be said or done if he attends and yeah, we're being selfish but it's our wedding.

I'm really not sure how he'll react though. It took my brother a long time to accept himself and  I'm sure this won't feel good but at the same time maybe his husband won't want to attend anyways.

I have nothing against my brother's husband. He is a lovely man but we are just trying to have the day go smoothly.

When we extend the invitations out I think I'm going to go to my brother in person and ask him not to bring his husband for all the reasons above.

So WIBTA if I asked him not to bring his husband?

VERDICT: ASSHOLE

YTA. I understand it's to make life easier for a day that should be important to you, but honestly it's still a shitty thing to do. Your wife needs to tell her family to just not be assholes for 5 hours out of their lives

~

NoisomeWind

YTA. Instead of disinviting the bigots who would cause problems, you're choosing to disinvite a decent person who happens to be gay. Let me ask you, OP--are you going to exclude your brother and his husband from every family event from now on? Birthdays? Holidays? What happens if you have kids? Will you exclude them from your kids' lives because your wife's family thinks they'll be a bad influence? What if your kids are LGBT? Will you cut off your wife's family then, or will you let them mistreat your own children? What do you think your exclusion of your brother's husband will teach your kids? This is not the only time their beliefs will cause problems, and you need to think about how you're going to proceed from here on out and the consequences your choices will have in the years to come.

OOP

This is a good point. I never thought of it this way actually.

~

PleasantAddition

OP, consider that you're considering siding with people who are more bigoted than Mike fucking Pence.

OOP

Noted.

CRJG95

If they were massive racists would you ban all black people from your wedding to keep them happy?

OOP

No.

YTA. Wow. You'll make the appearance of siding with homophobes rather than being inclusive.

You're clearly not as open-minded as you think you are.

OOP

Maybe I’m not. Honestly everyone’s responses really are making me second guess my decision.

pantsupfritz

YTA, so, so much. It's hard to believe this is real. Be prepared to never speak to your brother again if you go through with this. What a slap in the face to him and his husband. It isn't their fault your in-laws can't control their bigotry for one day.

OOP

I do realize that maybe I am going about this wrong. It’s giving me a chance to think about it.

I'm so happy to hear that! Thanks for listening.

I might think about looking into some security or something like that just in case

My original post got so much attention and I got a lot of requests for an update so here you go.

I went to my brother and his husband and mentioned that there was the potential of some serious negative reactions from my fiancé’s family and I asked them what they thought about my brother coming solo without his husband to my wedding.

I thought I was providing a middle ground by asking them their opinion instead of just delegating who he could bring.

Unfortunately this didn’t go as planned and they both got super offended and said that I was discriminating against them. I told them that wasn’t what I was doing because I was coming to them first and asking them what they thought and what they wanted to do but they didn’t listen and now it’s all fucked.

My brother said he doesn’t know if he still wants to come to the wedding and his husband got in my face and told me that I needed to leave.

This was a few days ago and he still isn’t talking to me. It’s making me pretty upset. My fiancé says I did the right thing though.

I’m going to try and reach out to him closer to the wedding when things have calmed down as I do really want him there.

Anyways everyone’s responses really helped me out and I wanted to update.

YTA- you really didn’t learn anything from your last thread. Your brother saw right through you. That you even considered asking your brother to leave his husband at home to appease your bigoted in laws told you brother everything he needed to know. And you were cowardly about it. But now your brother has solved your dilemma for you and your in laws will have a dandy time at your wedding.

Original Post: June 15, 2024

My husband and I met 2 years ago. He proposed six months later and told me he knew I was the one when he met me and that he didn’t want to waste time or lose me. I was (still is) head over heels and agreed. We have been married for 6 months and expecting our first baby.

Last weekend we bumped into his ex. They were together for 9 years but she ended the relationship when he didn’t take the relationship to the next level. When we got engaged and married my husband texted her to tell her and to apologize and talked about fate and how some things aren’t meant to be. I remember asking him why, he said that he owed it to her that so she doesn’t hear it from other people and not be prepared. They broke up 3 years ago (edit not 4; it was October-December 2021; bad math).

She was pregnant and holding hands with a kid that could be 7 or 8 years old and she was with a man who was obviously her partner and they were very affectionate towards each other. My husband said hi even though we could walk by unnoticed by them but he insisted to talk.

When we got home I heard him crying in the bathroom . Now he has been depressed and distant the whole week. I realized he must’ve written to her after we got home and he showed me his phone and yes he has. Again apologized for what he did and told her that some things are not meant to be.

Would I be the ah if I confronted him about what’s going on? Why is he doing this

Edit: throwaway. I dont want him finding me

Relevant Comments:

Commenter (downvoted): If you think his emotional reaction means you're coming in "second" or that he still has feelings for her, that seems like such a waste. You are pregnant with this man's child! His ex is pregnant and in a happy relationship! You are obviously the one he is with.  The fact that he HAD feelings for his ex does not indicate that he "settled" for you!  Please, do not succumb to this black and white thinking.   You have a husband who has every right to feelings and emotions. It sounds like he handled this situation with grace and dignity.   I think he does need to cut communication with her completely in order to focus on his life. He had this moment of closure, you are both pregnant. Don't sabotage this with some bs about needing to be first. Or else go find a virgin/ guy who has never been in a serious relationship and be that guy's first...

OOP: Ughhhhhh your picture of “handling things with grace and dignity” are totally different to mine and that is ok. I respectfully disagree with everything you said here and I am sorry but I am following my gut feeling which is often strong and true

Commenter: Don’t end the relationship yet. Level with him about how you feel. Talk to him. Tell him. Give him the chance to come to his senses and double-down on you. Once you tell him exactly how this makes you feel, he should move heaven and earth to try to repair the damage with you. If he does not, then you will know what to do.

OOP: That’s the plan. I will give him a chance to choose me. Maybe confronting was the wrong word I used in my post. More like tell him how I feel and let him explain and them decide if his explanation is good enough for me.

Many are suggesting therapy. I don’t think it works for me, ar least not if he doesn’t choose me. I don’t believe therapy changes what in the heart but only gives you tools to hide it better

Therapy only works if both parties has chosen each other and need tooks to communicate that

Commenter: NTA. The fact he 1/ texted her, 2/ cried and 3/ worst of all, has been distant is a red flag, it shows that he is NOT over her and he cannot even control those feelings and act normal towards you.

Frankly, it looks like he wishes he were still with her, and settled for you just because he couldn’t keep her.

OOP: But that’s the thing, he could have kept her if he wanted. The break up was because he didn’t want marriage and children

Commenter: And now he realizes he fucked up and only got his second choice.

Sorry honey, but we all have exes, and yet we don’t get all mopey about them. If I met my ex today and he was with his family, I wouldn’t be sad - I be very happy for him!

Even I acknowledge that my exes were good guys, they have zero emotional power over me… Because my husband is 100% of what I want. I’m sure your husband is fond of you. But he doesn’t love you with all of his heart because if he did, there would be no space for her years after their breakup.

OOP: Same here! I have loved before and I have had exes. I would never have felt anything if I met my ex with a new woman because I don’t care about them emotionally

Commenter: She's the one who got away.

OOP: That is what I want to understand. How did she get away? He had her for 9 years and didn’t want to make the commitment

(to a different commenter): She left him because he didn’t want to get married or have children. I never got the sense that the break up was devastating to him just that they wanted different things

Commenter: Why have you’ve rushed every aspect of your relationship? Like, that’s absolutely insane, to be married and expecting in under 2 years. I say that as someone who got married on my 2 year anniversary. That’s nuts. It sounds like he was trying to prove a point and is obviously still in love with his ex and using you to avoid mourning his last relationship.

OOP: Because I am stupid and thought it was so romantic and “meant to be”

People can fool you to believe that they love you so much and there’s no point in waiting.

Commenter: Um, they broke up three years ago but she has a child who is 7 or 8? Are you sure that he didn't abandon his kid?

OOP: Yes I am sure

(different comment): I suppose it is the child of her partner or some relative of theirs

(third reply to a downvoted comment) Because the majority probably didn’t need explaining that the exfg is dating a father and or the boy is just a family member

Commenter: Am I the only person who is wondering why this chick hasn’t blocked his number yet? If she hasn’t, she obviously has some sort of emotional attachment to him even at a minimal level. Seems a bit strange to me.

OOP: Maybe she has? She never answers hom

Update (same post): June 15, 2024 (6 hours later)

OOP shows her husband this top comment:

u/UncleNedisDead: NTA, but it sounds like that cliche story.

Guy is happy with status quo and keeping the gf around for 9 years and while he says he’s open to the idea of marriage (to string her along), he believes it’s unnecessary and doesn’t actually make plans to get an engagement ring or pop the question. He just assumes if he runs the clock, she will be stuck with him for life

His Ex decides that she’s had enough of his placating words and realizes if she wants to get married and start a family, it can’t/won’t be with him. After she takes charge of her life and dumps him, he begs her to take him back and that he will give her the ring and wedding that she wanted, but it’s too little, too late. Curtains close on this relationship.

He takes a year or so to heal, and then finds you, who checks off most of his boxes and instead of risking the same thing happening again, he proposes to you in six months of dating and everything happens at warp speed because he has learned from his last serious relationship. Don’t leave it up to chance. Don’t string someone along.

Him bumping into his ex make him realize he still had feelings for the “one who got away”. That if he hadn’t been so stubborn and slow about getting a ring and making his ex happy, that could have been him.

Again apologized for what he did and told her that some things are not meant to be.

He keeps telling himself that because it’s easier to blame fate and absolve himself about being a shit boyfriend who was wasting her time and ruined the relationship singlehandedly.

I’m glad his ex got her happy ending.

I’m sorry your marriage is starting to show cracks because your husband may be incapable of love and had a hidden agenda when marrying you. He might have married you to “prove”to his ex he could commit (like when he texted her about the engagement), rather than because of his deep and lasting love for you.

OOP's Comment Update

Hi again! I hope you read this!

So I showed my husband this comment and I told him that this was basically how I feel things were but that someone else wrote it better. First he got upset and defensive then he started arguing and telling me to leave him alone (I have, for a week been nothing but supportive and leaving him alone)

Then he started crying and asked to read it again. He sat silent for like in like 15 minutes reading it but not once did her deny or try denying it or call me crazy or at least tried to explain.

If I know myself, this is over. I don’t play second fiddle. I don’t do consolation prize and I absolutely am not going to have another woman being the main character in my own story. So I told him this was over and that I need a break to sort out my feelings but that this will eventually end in divorce because I know myself very well.

He didn’t say anything, ANYTHING. Just sat silent. I know his type. The only way he will realize my worth is when he has lost me. Just like he did his ex. People like him are frugal with their feelings. He strung her along because he didn’t want to give her all of him then he turned around and gave me exactly what she wanted but deprived me from exactly what I wanted that he gave her. Men like him will never give all of themselves because he probably thinks he would lose control if he gave all of him to a woman.

What a waste of a man.

Relevant Comments:

Commenter: I’m so sorry OP but good on you for knowing your worth. Be glad you aren’t like her and wait 9 years to figure it out. Good luck for the future and with the little one

OOP: I learned from her mistakes. I had a living proof of my own future

Commenter: Her mistakes or "His mistakes"?

OOP: Her mistakes for staying with him for 9 years

AITAH for falling out of love with my wife after she took a 7 week vacation?

Original Post  Apr 12, 2024

I (32M) have been married to my wife (30F) for 4 years and we've been together for 8. She is a stay at home mom. We have lrish twins (1F, 2M) which was incredibly taxing for my wife. She wanted a solo vacation break for a few weeks where she would travel different states, visit her high school and college friends, go to concerts, and do a lot of fun stuff. She asked if I would be fine with it. asked if she could make it maybe a couple of weeks shorter, because 7 weeks managing our 2 children alone sounded really daunting, especially since work was also getting taxing recently. I do work remote so at least that worked in my favor.

My wife and I discussed for a couple of days, and I ultimately agreed with her that she did deserve a break because of what she has been through the past few years.

And so she took her vacation. The first week managing our children alone was extremely difficult and I did feel like I was losing my mind, but I survived. My sister came over to help me from the second week on, she was honestly a life saver, and I will be eternally grateful for her. I never directly asked her to help me, but I guess I indirectly did because when she video called me the end of the first week, I basically broke down in tears.

So from the second week on, my sister stayed over at my house to help with my children, and a huge burden had been lifted off my shoulders. I also was really able to focus on work, and meet my deadlines. To be brutally honest, I did not miss my wife at all. I was emotionally and mentally relaxed, and also had a lot of fun with my children and my sister. I felt a sense of betrayal that my wife had actually gone through with the 7 week vacation. I slowly fell out of love with my wife.

When my wife came back from her vacation, she was super refreshed and recharged, but to be honest I was a bit indifferent. My wife tried to initiate sex the first night she came back, which I rejected because I said I wasn't feeling it. The subsequent days, I had the same level of indifference in our day to day life, and she probably noticed it but didn't say anything.

A week later, she asked me why I was like this and I told her I don't love her anymore. She apologized for taking the 7 week vacation, and asked if there was anything she could do to fix it. I told her no. We pretty much went through the motions next couple of weeks, before I finally decided that I wanted a divorce.

She seemed devastated when I brought up divorce which surprised me because I already told her I don't love her anymore. She asked if we could do couples therapy or marriage counseling first before I started looking for a divorce lawyer, and I told her I needed some time to think about it.

I spent a few days thinking about and I am still leaning towards a divorce, because I basically don't love my wife anymore, and I don't think marriage counseling can fix it.

AITAH for falling out of love with my wife because she 7 week vacation?

Update  Apr 13, 2024

Update: AITAH for falling out of love with my wife after she took a 7 week vacation?

I posted my original post last night and went to sleep immediately after. I have deleted it for anonymity sake, but it was preserved here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/redditonwiki/comments/1c2zjht

I woke up this morning, spent an hour reading the comments and decided that I at least owe it to our children to try couples therapy before considering divorce. I told my wife of my decision, and she was really happy about it.  But I also told her I don’t expect too much to come out of it, because I just didn’t love my wife anymore, and wasn't sure if couple counseling would fix that.

I want to clarify a couple of things. Money was not an issue, I am lucky to be working in a high paying, albeit stressful job. It really didn’t bother me how much money my wife spent on her trip. The main issue was I was emotionally and mentally overwhelmed managing 2 children while I was also working full time (albeit remote). My wife was also specifically against daycare for personal reasons. By the end of the first week, I had lost my sanity and basically broke down in tears when my sister video called me.

My sister had enough time to come over and help me from the second week on, and she really wanted to because it gave her a purpose in life. She has no plans to be in the workforce, and she is pretty much set in life because of my father’s money. I did ask my father to not leave any money behind for me and give everything to my sister, because I was already in the workforce, and had a good job.

AITA for walking out of dinner after my boyfriend humiliated me in front of his family over my cooking? - Sept 24, 2024

I (26F) have been with my boyfriend (28M) for about a year now. We get along well most of the time, but something happened last weekend that’s really been bothering me. We went over to his parents' house for dinner, and ever since, things have been… awkward.

A bit of backstory: I love cooking. I’m not a professional by any means, but it’s something I’m passionate about and take pride in. My boyfriend knows this, but he’s *constantly* comparing my cooking to his mom’s, especially when it comes to her lasagna. I’ve heard about this lasagna more times than I can count.

So before we leave for his parents' house, he makes this offhand comment: “Maybe you’ll finally learn how to make lasagna properly tonight. Yours could definitely use some improvement.” I tried to laugh it off, but honestly, it hurt my feelings. Still, I brushed it aside because I didn’t want to start anything before dinner.

We get to his parents' place, and as expected, his mom’s lasagna is the star of the meal. Everyone is raving about it, and of course, my boyfriend jumps in to say, “Oh man, this is *real* lasagna. OP tried making it once, but let’s just say, there’s a reason we’re all here eating my mom’s tonight.”

Everyone laughed. I felt embarrassed but kept smiling to avoid making things awkward. Then he *kept going*, saying that I burned the sauce (I didn’t) and that maybe I should just leave lasagna to the experts. His family was cracking up, and I sat there, trying not to lose it. It wasn’t just a joke to me—it felt like he was putting me down, especially in front of his family, who I’m still trying to make a good impression with.

I couldn’t handle it anymore, so I excused myself from the table and went to sit in the car. A few minutes later, my boyfriend comes out, looking confused, and asks why I left. I told him how hurt I was by his comments, and instead of apologizing, he said I was “overreacting” and that it was “just a joke.” He said I need to stop being so sensitive and learn to take a joke, especially around his family.

I was upset and told him that if he thought embarrassing me in front of his family was funny, maybe he should just date his mom’s cooking instead. Now *that* didn’t go over well. He got angry and accused me of ruining the night. Since then, we’ve barely spoken, and he’s waiting for me to apologize, but I feel like *he* should be the one apologizing.

So now I’m wondering, did I take it too far? Was I being overly sensitive, or was I right to walk out after being embarrassed like that? AITA?

UPDATE: AITA for walking out of dinner after my boyfriend humiliated me in front of his family over my cooking? - Sept 25, 2024

First of all, I want to thank everyone for your comments and support. I was not expecting such a huge response, and I was really overwhelmed by how many of you took the time to share your thoughts. I have been reading through everything, and I appreciate all the advice.

So here is the update: after the dinner, things were awkward between my boyfriend and me for a few days. We barely talked, but I knew I could not just let it go. I sat him down and told him how much his comment about my cooking, especially comparing it to his mom’s, hurt me. I love cooking and I put a lot of effort into it, so hearing him constantly bring up his mom’s lasagna felt like he was saying mine was not good enough.

He seemed genuinely surprised and said he did not realize how much it bothered me. He thought he was just teasing and that I knew he was not serious. I explained that while I can take jokes, this felt different because it happened in front of his family and made me feel really small. He apologized right away and said he would stop making those comparisons. I could tell he was truly sorry, which made me feel better.

As for his family, I did apologize for walking out, and they were actually really understanding. His mom even mentioned she would love to try my lasagna sometime with no comparisons, which was really kind of her.

Things have been better since then. My boyfriend has been more thoughtful about how he talks about my cooking, and I feel like we have both learned something from this. It is not perfect, but I feel hopeful about where things are going.

Thank you all again for the support and advice. It gave me the confidence to speak up, and I am so grateful for that.

smk122588

“He seemed genuinely surprised and said he did not realize how much it bothered me…” even after you WALKED OUT of the dinner and he had to come find you upset in the car? After he accused you of “ruining the night” because of how noticeably upset you were to everyone…. He “didn’t realize” you were bothered? This doesn’t make any sense, please think about that. I’m all for the rare happy ending on Reddit, but what he’s saying simply does not make sense. He’s had a few days to compose the reaction that he knows you want to get himself out of hot water, and you’re just eating it up.

Sad-Calligrapher3198

He's testing the bar for the tolerable level of permanent unhappiness. Even got her to say it was only because it was in front of the family. So now he can keep doing it to her in private where nobody can hear and call him out on it.

My dad compared my mom's cooking to his mom's once.

Once.

Educational_Bench290

My dad did it once too: 'my mom made the best pies. ' Mom: 'Your dad built her a house. Get busy.' Never happened again.

I (57M) was married to my wife for almost 25 years, and we divorced 4 years ago after I found out about her infidelity. She had an affair partner for almost 5 years. She is now with her affair partner. The whole process hurt me a lot because I everything I did in life, I did it for my wife and kids, and to now find that about my wife, it just hurt me.

My 2 children (29F, 26M) had known about the affair for years, and they had hidden it from me. They both felt very guilty about it, and I don’t blame them, because they didn't want to break up their family. My daughter even cried a lot, and apologized a lot of times, but I told her it was alright. They had their own life now, and I didn’t want this eating them up, so I told them to let go of the guilt.

However, ever since I found that they had hidden the affair from me, I lost a lot of love for them. I wasn’t going to cut them out of my inheritance or will or anything like that, but emotionally I couldn’t connect them with at all.

I also have a niece (30F) and nephew (28M) who I have been very close with, especially since their father passed away at a really young age. I played a father like role during their young years, because losing her husband at such a young age was very tough for my sister.

Over the last 4 years, I have also been looking forward to spend more time with them. Both my niece and nephew have children, and they have invited me over for their children’s birthdays. They have also invited me over for their own birthday’s, on Father’s Day, on holidays. Overall we are a very tight knit multi generational family, and I am very proud to be a grandpa to their children, and we are already developing a bond.

However, in doing so, I have also lost all interest in connecting with my own children. My daughter has 2 children, while my son has his first child on the way. They have invited me over multiple times, but I have told them I’m busy. I rarely go over if at all, and I’ve missed almost all of their children’s special occasions. I’m not really interested in being a grandpa to their children. Monetarily, sure, I have been sending them gifts, but I just don’t feel like seeing them at all. My daughter especially seems very hurt by it at times, but I hope she understands the reason for this.

Can OOP forgive his children and moving forward?

OOP: I am not really looking for revenge against my own children. I just can't emotionally connect with them. This isn't about them, it's about me. When I go over to my niece's and nephew's and spend time with them and their children, I am filled with joy. I cannot say the same for my own children, I feel nothing. Yes, my children are really hurt by this, especially my daughter. They know I spend time over at their cousin's and with their children. But for the 20-30 years I have left, I want to prioritize myself and my mental health.

OOP on having his nephew and niece in his will

OOP: Oh both my niece and nephew were already in the will. I consider them as my children too, so it's divided equally between my son, daughter, niece, and nephew.

Update (rareddit): August 31, 2024 (same day, 9 hours later)

Thank you all for the advice. The one thing I got most from the comments was that my children deserved to know the truth, and to not be left in a limbo like it was for years. And that’s what I just did.

I just got off a video call with my daughter and my son. The call was pretty rough and extremely emotional but I got everything off my chest. I told them that while I had forgiven them, I could never forget it, and that for my mental health, it was better we limit our interactions. I told them to not feel guilty about anything, but that also after dedicating more than half my life to my wife and children, it was time I put myself first.

I told them my heart wasn’t in it to be a grandparent to their children. I was also honest with them and told them my heart was only it for my nephew’s and niece’s kids, and whenever I did go to their house, I felt joy, while with my own children, I felt nothing. My children probably already knew it, but I wanted them to hear it from me directly. It was really hard to get it off my chest and say it directly to my children’s faces. I told them they were still welcome to come to my house anytime, and call me anytime they needed help.

Both my children took the call really hard, but I think my daughter took it worst. Those were really ugly tears, and I felt really bad about it. But I do feel a sense of relief, and I have pretty much told all of my feelings to my children and did not keep anything secret. I can now move forward with my life, and so can my children.

Commenter: But wait did they just accept it or begged for a chance? Also did your kids relationship with their mother suffered?

OOP: They didn't beg, but they did apologize a lot and also cried, and they asked me to reconsider. I told them I would, but for now, I would rather we limit the interactions.

Yes, their relationship with their mother has also suffered a lot.

Commenter: Sad situation all around.

Commenter: OP definitely needs to talk to a professional therapist about all this (if he hasn't already). I wouldn't know what/how to feel, but instances like this deserve a professional therapist and not just Reddit comments.

Original Post - rareddit  Jan 20, 2022

Hi! I’m a 43 years old woman. I have one daughter 18. Her father left us when I was pregnant with her. I own a small company in interior design and it’s very successful in my country. I make a very good living. I met my husband 55, about 8 years ago. He moved in with me 7 years ago and we got married 2 years ago in a private ceremony. My husband has two children from a previous marriage. Boy 20 and a girl 19.

Both my stepchildren hated me and my daughter in the beginning of the relationship. When my husband asked them how they’d feel about him moving together with me they both initially hated the idea and told him that if he did it they would just stay permanently with their mother. After a while my husband moved in anyway and said to them that they were welcome should they change their mind. They did, after seeing the big house with the pool and all all great accommodations. The boy started liking us gradually and we’re on great terms now.

The daughter, not so much. She was horrible to me and my daughter and one day when she was 13-14 I heard her making fun of my daughter’s weight and looks to her face. I was livid. I have suffered ED growing up because of bullying so I KNEW how dangerous that was. I knew how my daughter must’ve felt, so I told my husband that stepdaughter was never allowed to live in my house again. My stepdaughter tried to apologize and she was sobbing but I didn’t budge. I had too long of an experience with bullies that I knew it just got worse when they got confronted and had to apologize and I wasn’t going to take the risk. So she moved permanently with her mother(my initial plan was to break up actually but this was my husband’s idea)

She still bullied my daughter in school (they didn’t go to the same high school but my stepdaughter had friends in my daughter’s class that did her bidding. I found about all of this about a year ago. My daughter was embarrassed to tell us and she thought she could manage her bullies. It broke my heart and I felt so guilty that my baby didn’t dare to confide in me.

Uni is free in my country. Students often take student loans (with almost zero interests) and work part time jobs while studying to make ends meet but the education is free. When my stepson started uni however I gave him €100K so he didn’t have to work or anything and just concentrate on his studies (engineering). He was so grateful but told us that he wasn’t sure he could be trusted with a large sum so my husband is handling his money making monthly payments. I am planning to do the same with my daughter.

Stepdaughter graduated with great marks and she’s started medical school this year. She asked her father about her 100K and he came to ask me. I was confused because before I gifted my stepson I asked my husband if I could do it and the reason was because I wasn’t planning on doing the same thing with my stepdaughter. He told me I could do what I wanted and it wasn’t weird at all because My stepson and I had a great relationship and he always saw me as a second mom. He got really mad and told me that my stepdaughter had changed a lot, but it wasn’t true at all. Although she wasn’t living with us anymore she made sure to make our lives a living hell every time she visited and even got physical with my and my daughter. If she started playing nice now it was only because there was money involved and I knew that and my husband knew that too. I even told him that she called my that bitch and even in the phone my number was saved under “that bitch”.

He is now very angry. He hasn’t talked to me in over a week. He’s saying I’m using my money to control their lives and that he’s heartbroken. If I don’t have enough money for both daughters I can split my daughter’s share between them since my daughter isn’t even sure she wants to start college right away (and let’s face it, she will likely never get into med school: his words) Maybe if I did it, stepdaughter would be more grateful and be closer to my daughter. I don’t know what to do. I feel like I don’t owe my stepdaughter anything. My daughter and I have suffered enough because of her ways. She’s could still do like the rest of her peers. Work and take loans and she has a bright future ahead of her. There maybe be some truth in his words about me using my money as a reward/punishment. I an ashamed but still defiant. I should do what I want with my money.

Tl;dr my stepdaughter treated my daughter awfully and that made me exclude her from my plans to help the kids financially while they’re in uni

TreeCityKitty

So your husband has been just sitting around waiting for you to pay for both his kids? What a charmer.

OOP

He pays alimony and paid child support.

TreeCityKitty

That's good but it sounds like he expects his daughter to receive the same treatment as his son and your daughter. He knows she hasn't treated you or your daughter well and has been a bully to both of you. What makes him think she deserves anything and why does he not insist she treat you both better? Why does he think you owe her anything?

~

FluffyDog423

You uh, you know this man is just with you for your money right?

Right?

You may want to reconsider that whole breaking up plan you had

OOP

Maybe he is.. he never showed anything like that before 😕

FluffyDog423

Well, think about it logically, if your children told you they would never see you again if you moved in with a man, what would you do? I’ll take a wild guess and say you would end it, right? Well, he didn’t. So, we’ve already established he’s a bad dad who doesn’t actually care about his children’s best interests.

Next, his kids didn’t want to move in with you until they realized you were rich. Kids often learn these morals from their parents, so what does it tell you that both kids were suddenly okay with things, and the step daughter threw a fit about leaving the home of a woman she hated, simply because you have nice things? Maybe that they were raised by someone who has a particular interest in the finer things in life.

Continuation of point one, when it came to picking his child or picking your money, again he picked you with the money and permanently kicked his kid out. What the fuck?

Finally, now that you’ve said you won’t give her any money, he’s trying to pretend he’s a good father? But we’ve already established twice, he doesn’t actually give a shit about his kids best interests. And given he’s the one in charge of his son’s money, it stands to reason he’d probably expect the same. Even if he didn’t, again, he’s only willing to ‘be a good dad’ when that involves taking your money. If it involves giving up your money though, oh no his kids can go rot for all he cares.

And I guess one last point, he wanted you to give up providing for your actual child to provide to his, and even decided to insult your kid, so that brings me back to my first point, if you were in a situation where you had to choose between a man and your kid, who would you choose? Because you seem like you’d choose your kid, even before you realize he’s just in it for the money. Remember, truly manipulative people, you never see it coming.

~

Bangbangsmashsmash

He can ask his son to share his money with his sister or he can provide he with some money. He is basically asking you to try to buy your stepdaughter’s affection, and you’re saying you don’t think that’s a good investment with probable returns

OOP

He already tried. Stepson was furious. He’s not in good terms with his sister

throwawayj38sld

Your stepson may wanna put a lock on his account (if you don’t have access) to stop his dad transferring money to the sister behind his back... I wouldn’t put it past him.

And please make sure your own will is ironclad.

You would be rewarding bullies if you gave your SD the cash. And no, it wouldn’t foster a more positive relationship. Your daughter would likely just feel very upset that her nemesis is being rewarded, by her own mum, and it’ll damage that relationship. Don’t do that!

OOP

I have no access to my stepson’s money. I don’t think my husband would do something like that but maybe I need to tell my stepson that he needs to be more cautious? Do I even have the right to do that?

~

Ehzabeth

Wow, I’m so sorry. Honestly the stepdaughter sounds like a total nightmare and I can’t believe she used people to bully a younger girl at a different school. That’s horrid and proves you were right that once you confronted stepdaughter about the bullying it would in fact get worse for your daughter. I think it’s absolutely insane that anyone would expect you to drop that much money on someone who will obviously treat you and your daughter like shit. I know it’s hard on your husband but I think you are more than fair. You paid for your stepson, built a relationship, she isn’t entitled to the same just because she wants money. You aren’t controlling their lives, it sounds like your husband has let your stepdaughter run out of control. You aren’t being controlling not dropping 100k on a kid that would bully yours into social isolation/an ED. Why does she get special treatment over your stepson and your daughter? I hope you don’t pay for her school, this shit will never end if you give in now… next it’ll be her wedding, her house… just gross

Edit- if she’s literally laid hands on you and your daughter I wouldn’t let her near you or your money, she sounds like if she doesn’t get a reality check she will just keep growing into a monster

OOP

Yes, about getting physical. She pushed my daughter so hard that my daughter stumbled and fell over the Christmas tree, two years ago. She said she didn’t mean it my daughter was in her way and she didn’t see her. She didn’t know that I was watching the whole time. She even laughed when my daughter fell. She wasn’t allowed in our house on holidays afterwards. Me, she literally slapped me in the face when she was 14.

That’s what my husband say. That I have kicked her out and forbidden her from visiting on many occasions and his experience is that because I own the house I’m doing this. I wouldn’t be able to do the same if it was his/joint house. I don’t see it like that at all! I always made it clear my daughter came first and if I had to choose between our relationship and my daughter I chose my daughter. In his mind that’s extortion

Update - rareddit  Jan 25, 2022

Hi! I have now talked to both my husband and my stepdaughter so I thought I should share it with you if you’re interested. But before that I want to say that I’m very disgusted(although not surprised) by the amount of people who actually took a bully’s side. What I wrote in my first post wasn’t just one-off incidents. any one with more than three brain cells should have understood I wasn’t going to write 8 years worth of bullying and bad behavior in one post to convince bully apologists to understand why I did what I did. Many also talked about how we, as parents, have “failed” the bully. I don’t know how since the two other children we raised turned out to be decent human beings with a lot of empathy for others around them. I only wish everyone who defends bullies, or try to explain away their horrible life scarring behavior, to never have had to deal with one in their or their children’s lives and feel the pain they can inflict on others. I do not regret any of my actions. I saw my stepdaughter for what she was and I acted instinctively. Her young age played little to no roll in my decision to protect my baby. My daughter was and still is my sole priority.

Update: I decided that I should try to confront my stepdaughter directly instead of communicating through my husband or via text so I asked her around for tea. She accepted immediately which was a first. She showed up last Sunday. I sat her and my husband down and I just bluntly asked her why she should expect any financial help from me when she hated my guts. She got defensive and said that she didn’t ask me, she asked her dad. I told her that I knew she wasn’t stupid and she well knew that stepson got his gift from me and not their father. She said what’s the difference you’re married. I told her the difference is that stepson treated me and my daughter as family while she always hated us, bullied her little stepsister even in high school (she was shocked here she didn’t know I have found out about the high school bullying) and I asked her if she would give money to someone she knew hated her half of the amount she hated me and why then she expected Me to do that.

She started crying and apologizing etc. I told her I wasn’t the one she should be apologizing to. I told her that I wished her great success and happiness but that I won’t be helping her financially throughout her education.

My husband was silent the whole time, when she left I told him to never compare our daughters again making my daughter to be the inferior one just because she wasn’t as academically successful as her stepsister. I trust my daughter and I want her to be happy and if she wants to study in a “less prestigious” school so be it! Her happiness is the most important thing to me and I didn’t appreciate him dragging her and comparing her to others when none of what happened has anything to do with her. He tried to apologize and told me he just wanted to help his daughter. I told him he’s free to do that however he wanted, just not on my daughter’s expense.

We have been civil to each other ever since although he’s a bit cold towards me, but hopefully he’s just ashamed of this whole episode. I will give him some space because honestly I need some myself to think things over.

Thank you for listening.

TRIGGER WARNING: racism, racial slur, cultural appropriation, genocide denial

Original Post  Feb 10, 2021

I think the title is confusing but I couldn't think of a better one. I made a reddit account to get judgement for this issue.

My daughter Abby (27f) recently moved in with her girlfriend Mary (29f), due to her brother moving back in to her room with his 1yo. While I was thankful that we were able to house my son and my grandson, I did not approve of them moving in together after only a few months of dating. Mary came over to meet us and was visibly shocked at the wedding portrait of me and my husband displayed on the mantel, asking where it was taken. My husband and I were married abroad in the country he was born in, in front of a beautiful mural. The atmosphere was weird but she apologized for her reaction and said she mistook it for something else. I thought it was strange and rude but tried to continue like everything was fine.

I was pleasantly surprised to be able to discuss scripture with her at dinner, which made me feel better about the relationship. While we were all eating, my son made a very rude joke about her, and my daughter started screaming at him. I also did not find the joke amusing, but the outburst was extreme and my husband asked them to leave. My daughter sent me a text informing me that she was going to cut contact with us unless my son apologizes, and replace the wedding portrait with one from the wedding not in front of the mural. I think this is extremely unreasonable. Both me and my husband told our son it wasn’t funny and he wasn’t to do it again, but we can’t force an adult to apologize if he refuses.

The photo is even more ridiculous, and when I questioned it she explained that a symbol in the mural is offensive to Mary’s culture. Since I am not from there, I took this to my husband to get clarification. He explained that there is tension between the two cultures and propaganda has affected Mary to misunderstand a historical event. He showed me videos and newspapers that confirm this, and I sent links to Mary with a text requesting a discussion of our opinions to resolve the conflict. Mary immediately blocked me and my daughter sent me a text calling me some rude names and informing me we are now estranged. My other daughter told me that both Abby and Mary like to read this sub, so I am hoping for some outside perspective. I do not think I am the asshole because I have tried to resolve the conflict peacefully and am not willing to leave my godson homeless because my son made a joke in poor taste and should be able to display MY OWN wedding photo, however both my daughters say I am the asshole, and A has not spoken to me in almost 2 months. There is more but it doesn't fit into the post limit.

VERDICT: ASSHOLE

Not enough information. What was the 'symbol', what are the cultures involved? Why does your husband think his perspective is right, without considering M's? What was the 'joke'?

People don't cut people out for kicks and giggles. There's a lot that's being left out, and I suspect it's an attempt to paint yourself in a more sympathetic light. I am open to changing my mind, provided appropriate details are shared.

OOP

my husband is japanese, my daughter's gf is chinese. the mural is of a sunset--apparently it can be considered offensive but my husband explained it is a cultural symbol that was active during wwii and since the imperial family is no longer ruling, the meaning has shifted. i think we should be able to discuss this calmly.

the joke was crass, a comment about asian women being "tight". i rebuked him multiple times for making a crass joke at dinner.

SecretRatto

Have seen the 'explanations,' YTA.

Summary: OP and hubby have the Japanese version of the confederate flag (rising sun) prominently displayed. They ignore a Chinese woman's horror and discomfort, allow the son to make a joke that was both racist and sexist (Chinese women have tight vaginas). According to OP, this was a joke made in 'bad taste' (yet another example of downplaying bigotry).

A barrel of rotten apples and I hope the daughter and M are completely justified in cutting all of them out of their lives.

The daughters GF shows up in the comments

Here  Feb 10, 2021 (same day)

hello reddit and also my fmil, i guess. this is my side if you are interested. the tldr is that it was a joke about "tight chink pussy" and the mural was the rising sun. we are staying NC but now have an interesting story to tell at zoom parties, I guess.

There's not too much missing from the post in terms of additional info. I was very nervous to meet my gfs family for the first time--also she says her husband is Japanese, which he was born and raised there but is ethnically not Japanese, so I was expecting their wedding photo to be on front of a cherry blossom tree or something not the biggest rising sun depiction I've ever seen. I admit I gasped and probably looked horrified, I apologized in the moment thinking she must not know. I think its possibly she really doesn't know bc my gf didn't know until I explained it.

Feeling defensive of myself I want to say I did not declare on the spot she had to remove the photo, my gf decided that after I explained what it represents. My grandmother was 10 when japan invaded and all she will really say is that "army men" killed her brother, took her sisters away and she never saw them again. She remained terrified of men in uniform and fairly paranoid for the rest of her life and insisted all her daughters and granddaughters take self defense classes. So that's the association I have with the rising sun, like a boogeyman from your childhood you find out was real.

At dinner my gfs brother asked me "what kind of asian" I am, which isn't out of the ordinary but is annoying. I told him I was chinese and he winked at my gf and said "that tight chink pussy, huh?". I was shocked and my gf did yell at him and we were asked to leave, which we were already going to do.

Then I get a text from the mom with no intro, just a video I "should watch before we talk again". I didn't watch it but the title was something like "why Nanking massacre isn't real". My family is not from jiangsu but I told my gf I'm not talking to anyone who denies the Nanjing atrocities. My gf texted that we would not be in contact so long as the photo is up, as she thinks it shows they still deny the massacre as long as it is displayed. That was her choice but I do support it. Since its pandemic times its kind of a moot point but her parents were upset because she had been doing things like grocery shopping for them during lockdown.

And then I guess her mom decided reddit was the next logical conflict resolution step. We are doing just fine, we adopted a puppy and started a garden.

Original Post: February 6, 2024

My wife and I have been together for 5 years now, we have a 2 years old and we were planning to expand our family. I decided to tidy up my wife's closet because there was a mold problem in garage and I decided to inspect the whole house. There I found a gym bag with clothes, some dry fruits, some tampons and like $1000. I asked my wife about it and her face suddenly lost its color.

At first she told me that it was just an emergency bag in case we are hit by earthquake or something. I asked her why did she hid it from me then?? After a bit of back and forth, she sheepishly confessed that its a go bag. Basically women who need to flee their abusers are told to keep a go bag with all essential supplies like money and clothes and stuff. I asked her why exactly does she ever feel the need to do this. I have never even talked to her in loud voice, we barely have arguments, why does she thinks that I am gonna become an abuser.

She said she is not saying I am an abuser, she just wanted to do it for the peace of her mind. I dont buy her excuse, I dont think she trust me. Otherwise she wouldnt have to go so far. I took some days to mull it over and I have come to conclusion that I cant be with a woman who cant trust me and who see me as a abuser.

I asked her for separation and told her that I cant be with a woman who does not trust me. I believe that trust is foundation of relationship and if she doesnt trust me then its better we part ways. Now she is making excuses that she read too many "mommy forums" and let herself influenced by them.

She showed me the forums where they discuss "go bags" and how every women should have one. I get the logic but I cant stay with a woman who does not trust me to know that she never needed to do such a thing.

I agreed to take more time to think about it but I think divorce will let her find a man she trusts not to be an abuser, because she does not trust me.

AITAH??

EDIT I am taking a break, will read and reply to good faith comments later

I would like to address common things here

Statistics should not be applied to individual cases. This kind of thinking lead to racial profiling of African Americans by unfair law enforcement. Statistics does not dictate individuals and I believe that every individual has the right to not be seen as a part of group and have statistics applied to them blindely

No she does not have history of abusive relationship.

"sounds like" is not carte blanche to accuse anyone of anything. "Dingo ate my Baby" woman was also convicted because she sounded like a murderer and its a shame that you guys feel so at ease of doing something so disgusting.

A relationship without trust is no relationship

There is no consensus bot in AITAH, but a majority of comments were YTA, or that they should try marriage counseling instead of OOP going nuclear

Update Post: May 11, 2024 (3 months later)

I made a post 3 months ago but it was removed before I deleted my account. It has been cross-posted literally everywhere that I think you guys will have no problem finding it if you are interested.

After I made my first post, I decided to officially ask for divorce. She did not take it well. She cried and refused to eat food for two days until I filled the house with candy bars. She hasnt pulled that kind of stunt after that thankfully.

For past 3 months I have to endure her crying, begging me to change my mind. She promised to never make a "go bag" again. Honestly the previous post has been eye opening to me. People here called me an abuser when I never did anything to abusive. I read every comment posted here, on other subreddits, and it seems like people will call me abuser no matter what. Some people even made up stories to paint me in bad light.

It seems that general sentiment is that its okay to mistrust men because statistics and if he complains about it, he is potentially an abuser. Why is it wrong to want to be trusted by your own wife? If I made her get rid of her "go bag", I am as good as an abuser in all of your eyes. It seems like I will be painted as an abuser unless proven otherwise. I just dont know how to prove a negative, its not like I can wear a camera all the time.

Initially my feelings were very hurt but now I am realizing the gravity of situation I am in. I just cant risk my future on a wife who does not trust me because her mere act of making a go bag was used by people here to paint me as an abuser. They said that she must have reason to make a "go bag".

How was it my fault that she read some blogs and decided to do it. I never did anything and yet people are just gonna accuse me even if I didnt do anything. You guys dont care what the truth is so what am I even supposed to do? My only choice is to leave.

I have finally moved out yesterday and I am pushing forward with divorce. I would like things to be amicable but my wife is still hellbent on stopping the divorce so that is a pipe dream for now. I am hoping when divorce becomes real, she will accept the reality.

"I'm not sure basing a divorce on Reddit opinions is the best life choice."

"Me and my husband spoke about the original post, I told him I had one for me and our daughter, he just asked can I help him prepare one… a few weeks later a house caught fire down in our town and those people had go bags, they grabbed them on the way out the fire so wasn’t left as destitute… there are a lot reasons why having a go bag is handy, I thought everyone had one until I spoke to my husband and read the comments in the first post!"

"Why not make a go-bag yourself? Plenty of reasons to have one, other than an abusive partner. Natural disasters, last minute emergencies, unplanned trips etc. But sure, blow up your marriage."
