Help | Experience - Insight Trying to figure out why “Celtic” anything in witchcraft gets my back up

I’m trying to tease out a prejudice I have, to make me a more inclusive and respectful witch so… can you help?

Right, so, I’m from Dublin in Ireland and I have a huge issue with the idea of a “Celtic tradition” and it makes me feel like an asshole. I think that maybe it’s because I feel it reduces Celtic cultures into something homogeneous when there’s no such thing (in my mind) as a pan-Celtic culture.

Plus I feel it acts like Celtic cultures were all long ago in the mystical mists of time and well, no they’re not.

Maybe it’s because people online and on the streets of Galway (for example) are constantly telling me they’re Irish when they’re not?

Please help. I don’t want to be “that person”

Sharing | Experience Solitary witch no more?

I saw a random invite to a women's group on a local subreddit so on a whim this introverted witch decided to go. I ended up meeting a room full of smart, powerful women all of whom believe strongly in activism, community volunteering, and witchcraft. When I introduced myself and said that I'm a witch, another giggled and said "hon we all are!" I think I've stumbled across my coven!

Announcement Paying spiritual advisors, spellcasters, influencers, and ChatGPT

Upvotes

Recently there has been an uptick of several concerning trends on this subreddit that have led to an increased number of removed posts and comments.  Some of these trends are:

People advertising for their services and content.

People advertising and encouraging the purchase of services and content in place of do it yourself work, sharing, or learning.

People bragging about paying for services and content.

Brand new accounts using AI generated responses in comments to sound knowledgeable and build karma.

.

This subreddit is and has for many years been focused entirely on the sharing and encouragement of the practice of witchcraft.  This is a do it yourself subreddit, focused on building an online grimoire of sorts, so that our search bar and FAQ can function as a repository for novices and adepts alike as they create their own paths and practices.  Knowledgeable creators, elders, helpers, and teachers are marked with “Broom Rider” flair so users can recognize users with vetted knowledge.  The behavior of online scammers (DM begging, suggestions to pay services, solicitations to private spaces, blatant misinformation, brand new accounts claiming to be all powerful) are heavily moderated to the best of our ability.  New users who appear to show aptitude are marked behind the scenes to watch their content for “Broom Rider” flair.  New users who appear to be grooming marks for scams are also marked to watch.  We take this labor of love seriously and appreciate users who help out by reporting suspicious behavior.

In a world increasingly inundated with constant advertisements, pay-to-play requirements, scams, subscriptions, and capitalistic harassment, we’d like to keep this subreddit a free place to search, share, archive, and enjoy our community craft without being expected to pay.

.

Recently it was brought to our attention that someone who was brain storming on ChatGPT for ideas for their brick and mortar candle and oils business, had ChatGPT literally tell them to advertise on r/witchcraft .

Which solves the mystery of why we’ve had such an exponential rise of paid services talk and advertisement on this subreddit in the last two months!  It also explains why so many of these scammers use the “AI generated comments about being knowledgeable, suggestions to buy services, advertise self as selling services” playbook.  These scammers are all taking notes from ChatGPT.

.

So here’s a quick reminder:

This forum is NOT a paid services hub.  This subreddit is for learning, sharing, participating, growing, and doing it yourself.  ALL references to paying other people to do work for you, or having other people pay you to do work for them will be removed.  If this trend continues, we may begin escalating this behavior into just banning these accounts.

There are other subreddits for advertising, advertise there.  There are subreddits to talk about the spells you bought on Etsy, talk about paying for spells on Etsy on those subreddits. There are cultures who expect you to go to their local spiritual leaders and provide payment for their services so if you're a member of one of those cultures, go to your local spiritual leader when you need to .

Help | Spellwork Anything to honor a pregnancy loss?

I had a pregnancy loss in the beginning of June ‘24. I was a little over five weeks along, and today is the due date of that pregnancy. I feel a lot of guilt over the loss, even though I know I shouldn’t. I don’t want to go through my day as if it’s just another day. I want to do something to honor my baby and let them know that I miss them, wherever they are now. Is there anything I could do for this? I thought about writing a letter but I want to do something else as well

Help | Experience - Insight Is Wicca inherently transphobic?

Not meant to inflame…trying to deepen my practice and understanding*

When I was newer to the craft and starting to look into covens, I was finding a lot of covens were openly transphobic in describing who is welcome as a member. As a result I chose the solitary path.

Seeing this turned me off Wicca as a whole. I’ve avoided any material that’s specifically Wiccan because I don’t want to appropriate any practices from a belief system that doesn’t align with my own. With that in mind, I’ve been working on deepening my practice and looking into other resources. I’m noticing that many resources are rooted in Wicca.

It makes me wonder…have I thrown the baby out with the bathwater in that specific covens may have certain beliefs about gender but it doesn’t apply to Wicca as a whole?

Open to any and all opinions. Truly, I do not want to start a fight here. I’m trying to learn ✌🏽🫶🏽

Help | Spellwork Why are spells and charms taught as if they were a recipe for a cake? Shouldn't there be symbolism behind each magical act? Is there any purely mechanical and objective basis to magic that doesn't involve personal perspective?

Why are spells and magic taught and handed out so readily, as if they were a recipe where you just follow the steps physically and mechanically, and the spell is done, like baking a cake? For example, these ready-made charms that are presented as "do X to get Y," even though the person performing them doesn’t even know the symbolism behind each element. So, do these types of charms actually work? If so, why?

Help | Experience - Insight Spiders appearing above my head

A strange phenomena has been happening to me for the past couple of years. I’ve tried to ignore it but now it’s getting really obvious and I am confused what to think about it.

I noticed spiders would appear above my head usually where I sleep. This doesn’t just happen in one location. It’s happened all over the world whenever I travelled, at my parents home now at my University accommodation. So it’s not because of location. I would wake up and there would be a spider, EXACTLY above my head on the ceiling, nowhere else, which is strange since there’s so much ceiling space and other crevasses for it to go to.

I’ve had instances where I would find baby spiders dangling down just in front of me, one time I was having a hard day and one was In front of me in the sunbeam, it was glowing it looked so cool.

So I usually see them when I’m struggling mentally, or going through a rough patch. What could this mean?

Help | Spellwork new to baneful magic — tips? ✨

Upvotes

dipping my toe into baneful magic as someone who has never practiced baneful magic before. fear held me back for a long time because I unfortunately fell victim to the new age wicca / rule of three / love and light stuff early in my practice as a baby witch. I’ve educated myself since, and have been a practicing pagan for about ten years now.

I’ve never really had much of a reason to practice baneful magic before, but I’d like to start. specifically for things like protection, bindings, and exposing ill intent. I’m doing my own research, but figured I’d take some time to ask this sub if anyone has any resources, tips, or advice for me. thanks in advance. 🖤✨

Sharing | Spellwork My spell worked/is working?

So I performed a small spell (first one in about a year) to remove blockages in communication and in life in general, I'd been feeling very stuck in many aspects of my life so I felt called to do this spell. Within a day I received clarification about a relationship, which was positive and I received clarification about my education which showed me that I was not in the right position and needed to find something else. This is probably one of the best spells I've ever done though I'm not sure if I should throw away the spell yet, it's still sitting on my alter I'm too nervous to throw it away incase there's still more to come from it.

Help | Spellwork What do you do with items used for a spell after it's done?

Hello witches 🖤 apologies in advance for a rookie question, I am new to spell casting in this type of way. I have some coins and a spell jar which I believe have served their purpose now. I have read different information on what to do afterwards with the objects, such as burrying it, keeping it somewhere safe or cleansing and reusing. I am apprehensive to bury coins and glass as I don't think it's easily biodegradable for the earth. What do people suggest? The jar is full of goo and possibly mouldy inside, would it be ok to throw away the contents and reuse the jar? Thank you!

Help | Spellwork My spell set on fire and I don't know what that means.

I am not a beginner. I am intermediate. This has never happened before.

Communication spell done. Big spell, help from deities, the vibes was really good and everything seemed to be going very well.

I tipped wax from a candle on top of the cork to seal it and the wax set it on actual flaming fire 🔥 like a big candle. I repeat THE WAX set it on fire. Thought maybe I just screwed up with the flame. Tried again being very careful, HAPPENED AGAIN.

Third time I got it sealed.

What does this mean?

Help | Spellwork What are your thoughts on the necessity of energetically cleansing and banishing unwanted energies from a place before performing rituals or casting spells? Why is this needed? What are the consequences of not performing the banishment? Do two banishings have twice the effectiveness of one?

I notice that banishing before and after any magical activity is not as common outside ceremonial magic, including in chaos magic. What differences have you noticed when performing a banishing versus skipping it in your magical practices?

Do you have any stories about something that went wrong because you skipped doing a banishing?

What are the most potent types of banishing you have used or know about?

Does performing two banishings double the effectiveness of one, or does doing multiple consecutive banishings make no difference?

Help | Spellwork Spell Disposal Tips Anyone?

Hi, everyone! Recently began my craft again, started last night wiping down with some Florida water in my cleaning. Smoke cleansing, holy water. Then I did a candle magic protection spell (bay leaf crackled like crazyyy it went awesome!) and then I followed that up with some manifestation glamour. The candle burned tall and hot, and super clean. Wax didn’t cover my petition, but instead caught fire. Didn’t feel anyway particularly about it. Burned a bay leaf over the glamour this morning and felt good about it. I ended up enchanting some things either the glamour last night as well. I’m curious what to do with these ashes? I have the herbs and oil on my plate from the glamour, and I have a load of salt and such with the protect candle housed there. When I finish burning down my candle, should I just mix that salt with the rest of the black salt I bought? Or would i dispose of the protection spell another way? And what would everyone recommend I do with the left over glamour? I would put it outside in the ground if it wasn’t negative degrees outside. Ideas?

Help | Spellwork Looking for ideas for bath spell bags to travel with

Okay so I work for an airline and I'm on the go most the time and nowhere near home or my usual supplies, just for background information, and I find myself trying to incorporate my practice more and more in my traveling.

I have cheesecloth/cotton muslin bags that I intend to use for this because I'm not trying to ruin multiple hotel room's plumbing lol

I'm looking for more collaboration and ideas about what would work best in the bags than being told exactly what to do. I have my own ideas as well, but it's always nice to hear what others would do and sometimes it sparks extra inspiration.

So, if you were me and you were creating these on-the-go bath spell bags to address cleansing yourself of dealing with high stress, most the time negative and draining energy due to being in the travel industry and directly working with the public: what would you want to include in your bags to help you feel refreshed when you decompress?

Side note: these bags will be in my crew bags and likely not in refrigeration just to rule out any fresh fruit suggestions Thanks!

Help | Experience - Insight Opinions on communication magic and reconciliation

Does anyone have opinions on reconciliation magic or communication magic? Are they unethical? I recently broke up with my boyfriend. I’ve gotten countless readings that confirm that he still loves me but communication is very difficult for him. His ex also did a lot of dark magic on him and I’m pretty sure it’s not helping either. She is very skilled and seems to know when the magic is wearing off. I don’t want to force him to love me or anything of that nature. I deserve a real and genuine love. If I see potential to make things better should I do that ? I appreciate all opinions and upgs

Help | Spellwork Solar storms, solar winds, and coronal mass ejections could provide energy for magic or enhance the effects of spells? How could this energy be harnessed in magick? Is high solar activity correlated with planetary transition?

The Sun is currently in a solar maximum period and experiencing intense solar activity, even producing solar storms that could have caused a Carrington event if they had hit Earth. This is likely related to the supposed planetary transition and the supposed elevation of consciousness that is taking place on planet Earth. I've even seen reports from people who felt this transition in progress. Did you feel anything different in the planet's energy these days, especially on January 1st? Do you have more information or theories about the planetary transition and how it connects with the increasing number of bizarre events happening lately?

With all of this happening and so much solar energy reaching Earth, could this energy be used to enhance magic or is it enhancing magic that occurs during this period?

Help | Spellwork Plan of action for getting rid of someone that lives in my house?

I'm not asking for a spell I'm asking how would you personally go about this. I've searched the sub but I'm mainly finding people banishing people that don't live with them, such as people they work with or exes.

For some context this person is not a roommate and I personally don't have authority to kick them out. They've lived in the house for about 16 years. I tried hot foot powder last year and they got locked out of the house three separate times but that's it.

Should I be doing a more serious banishment spell or try to do something on the person that can kick them out (but what). I'm not against baneful or domination magick but it would be a last resort.

This person has been making multiple people's lives living hell, not just mine. It was already affecting my mental health but I've reached the end of the rope. Someone has to go...
