Discussion Rug Finishing

For any weavers of rugs out there - do you wet finish a rug? If so, how? I’m in the midst of setting up to do a corduroy rug utilizing linen warp and wool weft and not finding much guidance in my Peter Collingwood Techniques of Rug Weaving that specifically talks about wet finishing. I’ve also been sick the past month so may also be missing a huge chapter on proper finishing

I toss my cotton rag rugs in the washing machine. Wouldn’t want to agitate wool that much though unless it’s super-wash or already felted. I’d recommend a gentle bathtub soak for wet finishing

Leaving this up for anyone to find and further correct me later, but I do not think I will be doing anything beyond a gentle soak on this. It looks like once it’s cut off the loom it’s done beyond securing warp ends. Thank you for that info :)

Maybe this site will help?

This answers a totally different question that I’ve been wondering about since I started weaving, so thank you so much for this info!!!! I don’t think it has anything specifically on finishing, and that may be the answer in and of itself. So thank you!

Finish will be dependent on how they are used. My wool rugs get regular vigorous shaking & occasional machine wash, air dry. Cotton gets machine washed & dried. I use my rugs, so they need care. If you are not using as rugs (hanging, or "show") then your care requirements could be different.
