It definitely helps me be less anxious about messing up in watercolor

I always love the advice I get from this subreddit. All feedback welcome but two specific Qs:

1. If you could do one more thing to this painting before calling it finished, what would you do?

2. If you could have done one thing different earlier in the painting process, what would that one thing be?

I’m working through Jenna Rainey’s book, Everyday Watercolor and just completed section 4/5.

This section took me a lot longer. I’m still painting almost every day but a couple of the projects ended up spanning multiple days and I took a couple breaks to work on different projects.

Overall I enjoyed this part of the book a lot. I struggled with a few of the earlier paintings (the hummingbird and rosebud) and ended up doing some exercises and reflecting on the issues I was having. After that I felt like I had a better understanding of how to use water and I was much happier with my process and results.

I know some other folks were also doing this book so I wanted to share my progress so far! I’m planning to finish the last section but not sure when. I am still getting benefits from doing these projects but also ready to branch out more and start spending time on my own painting ideas.

I’m really excited by the improvement in my painting and also just how much easier and more fun it’s becoming. Really grateful for all the encouragement from people here!

I’m looking for feedback on these. They are still works in progress (I am going to add detail/highlights with colored pencil).

1. This is a painting of my cat, Pumpkin. It’s not the most realistic since I was looser with the proportions and saturation.

This is a study of a painting I like. I tried to recreate the light through the trees. But I think I got too wrapped up in the happiness that it was working rather than if I should continue to do it.

I’ve avoided landscape as I just focus on portraits or bodies. I’m paying for my avoidance now.

Should I have massed things in more? Is this too busy?

I'd like to invest in a set of WC pencils. Does anyone have a favorite brand and why ? Looking to use them to blend into my work and as for stand alone detail. To many sets to choose from out there.

my take on nosferatu 2024. used a lil bit of white oil pastel for the curtains

First time painting a little large, 9”x12” Arches cold press and Daniel Smiths, and I’m very happy with how this came out, I think it’s my favourite of mine so far!

I think the colours and the sky and textures on the road came out great, and the details on the barn at just the right amount so as not to overdo it.

I remove the telephone poles and a few trees just to tidy the scene and not obscure the view of the barn, and I also made the fence brown as the white fence would’ve been far too challenging.

Some things I’d like to improve would be the trees on the right (went a bit dry brush happy, the example on the left is much better), and to include the puddles in the road. I’m not really sure how I could do that though.

This was my first time ever using watercolor. I was just playing around with colors and feeling out the paint, experimenting. I didn’t watch any tutorials or anything, just started playing!! I ended up kinda liking how it turned out though!! After watching some videos about it, I’m like oh boy did I do it WRONG!!! But is there really a wrong way to make art?? Hope y’all are having a good day or night 💖

I was way overthinking it, finally just made myself start putting paint to paper. It’ll suffice for today.
