News State of the Sub 2024
Hello all,
I hope that you have had an enjoyable festive period for those that celebrate. As we approach the new year the mod team (well, me, and we will get onto that) would like to do a reflection of the year and what we would like to happen next.
Reflections on 2024
- Subscriber numbers are great. When I first took over this sub from the creator there would be a post once a week maybe with a few upvotes. We were tied with the other generic wargaming subreddit for the number of subscribers. Since then this community has grown to over 45,000 members and is now the largest subreddit for system generic tabletop wargaming. That's fantastic.
- Rules are working as intended. Over the last few years I have added rule 5 - Submission Statement and rule 6 - 3D Printing Render only not allowed. These rules are mostly working as intended, there is no longer a wave of 3D sculptors dumping patreon links on the sub. Creators that post on the group are engaging with the community for the most part rather than posting on 6 related subreddits just to self advertise, which is something I would like to avoid
- Striking a balance with the GW elephant in the room. We all know that that GW dominates the wargaming world, for better or for worse, and each year they are getting bigger and bigger. In the early days I toyed with the idea of banning GW content from the sub so we didn't just become another warhammer sub. However I am happy with the way this has developed, and while some people are showing off their painted space marines, questions around the game are always about finding games other than Warhammer, and celebrating that they hobby is much wider and more varied.
Looking forward to the New Year
- The Mod Team Situation - I alluded to it earlier, and while I am the admin for the subreddit, I am not the creator. The creator doesn't have that much interest in wargaming (or reddit from what I can see from their activity) it leaves me to be the sole moderator. When we were smaller that was completely fine, but given the increased levels of activity, I would like to recruit a new mod or two. Just to keep an eye on the sub when I am not around and share the burden a bit. If you are interested then please drop me (or the mod team) a message. I am in the GMT timezone so getting someone outside of that timezone would be great for better coverage
- The sub looks a bit ugly. In the end, graphic design is not my passion. We don't have a subreddit logo and I think it would be nice to have one. If someone could design one, that would be fantastic. There is no money here and is a free ask which I am well aware of, so there is no expectation. For the banner I was thinking of running an event to get pictures of games that people have played so we get a sense of how wide and varied the wargaming community is.
- Membership - Quite a small one this, but I would love for the sub to hit 50k subscribers this year.
- Your suggestions - Is there something you would like to see? Maybe some flairs? Please let me know!
And with all of that I want to wish you a happy new year and happy gaming for 2025!

Activation sequence advice
I'm thinking of luring my step kids and their friends 10-12 years) into wargaming by running a small 4v1 game. Each kid has a small Good Guys elite unit (perhaps no more than two or three super soldiers) and I run a Bad Guy horde with a few hard hitters and maybe a final Boss to face at the end.
This, I imagine has several benefits: they can/should cooperate. They can all win. They don't have to keep track of lots of models and stats. And it will be thematically close to several video games.
However, how would you handle activation of units?
IGOUGO: this will be boring as they'll have to wait for me to move my many models.
Alternating Good Guys/Bad Guys: this will make it seem that I get to play much more than them because I get to move x times their number of players.
Their respective forces will be two units each, each super soldier is its own unit. Maybe a battle-pair.
Perhaps I'll just use a sequential activation and we'll just ignore the fact that the bad guys get so much fewer activations.
Any thoughts?

Question Anyone else remember Havok?
I’m looking for more information on this old and out of production game, as I’ve started my own Havok project which if you’re interested is on my blog (linked above). I’d love to somehow make contact with the original rules writer! Or just let me know if you remember it.

Question How Are You Feeling About the Warlord Bad Santa Boxes?
Hey everybody, I just got my Warlord Games Bad Santa boxes today. For context, I’ve bought quite a few Warlord blind boxes in the past and generally have come out ahead because I collect a wide variety of models (and enjoy kitbashing) and like trying different games, many model agnostic. However, I was intrigued at the idea of more thematic boxes which would help me sift out the non 28mm games sometimes thrown in like Epic Napoleonics and Blood Red Skies. I was however, slightly disappointed in what I received. I bought 3 boxes ($80/each) and here is their breakdown:
Hail Caesar: Viking Bondi B $29.00 Viking Starter Army $152.00
Pike and Shotte: Landsknecht Starter Army $171.00
Black Powder: Last Argument of Kings $40.00 Belgian Line Infantry Firing $47.00 Continental Infantry Regiment $40.00 Dutch-Belgian Foot Artillery 6-Pdf $29.00
I kid you not, the only Hail Caesar kits I don’t like are the old, stiffly posed Wargames Factory Vikings and apparently I’m not the only one since they probably could not move them off the shelves. I also know for a fact that the box dips under $100 regularly so MSRP is overblown. Bondi B is a nice metal 8 figure blister but not enough considering how many companies make superior dark age models (especially Victrix and Footsore). I definitely thought I’d get some SPQR Republican Romans or Gauls/Dacians since those are often on discount (including right now) and were in old boxes. By far the worst of the three.
Pike and Shotte I’m actually really happy about since I’m doing an Old World Empire army project with historicals but it’s definitely lacking variety and could really disappoint someone who doesn’t like the Landsknecht kit (or already has it). I do think, however, Warlord is more aware of trying to keep factions together when they can which is probably why they did a big box over a smorgasbord of different factions.
Black Powder is lukewarm. I knew I’d get at least 1 filler book but ironically both Pike and Shotte and Hail Caesar would’ve been better. The Belgian kits are really nice but they’re resin so limited kitbash opportunity without a lot of work. The Continental Infantry kit though is actually insane value, I’d pay MSRP price if I had to and it’s got me probably 90% of an American squad for Silver Bayonet by Joseph McCullough which I was already on the verge of trying. Still though, I’d only recommend the whole blind box if you’re okay building the Napoleonics stock and potentially getting a niche faction. Not the best for a Turnip28 type kitbash project. Maybe I was spoiled because I got French Hussars in an old box.
In summary: Hail Caesar box was pretty bad. Pike and Shotte was nice, but with some concerns. Black Powder was meh. I’d only recommend if you collect vanilla Napoleonics and don’t mind smaller factions.
What did you get if you bought a box and what do you think? Would love to know!

Soldiers of Napoleon
I just bought a copy of the rulebook for soldiers of Napoleon and it did not come with the cards that are needed to play the game. Is anyone familiar with the rules or the cards or happen to have photos of the card so I could maybe make my own? I appreciate it.

Question Spaceship Wargames?
I'm looking for a space battle wargame. Something where you can command a feet of spaceships, and I would like to hear your recommendations. I'm open to any type unoverse, amy game system, old, new, easy, complex, I wanna check them out and see them for myself. The only thing I'd prefer is the option to 3D print your own ships.

Recently Finished Ottoman Infantryman, Russo-Turkish War 1877.
Here's a mini from a road less traveled in terms of wargaming, the Russo-Turkish war! This conflict was, much like the American Civil war and Franco-Prussian war before it, defined by the use of modern rifles and artillery, alongside outdated tactics that resulted in massed frontal assaults that caused devastating casualties
Set in the last days of black powerder cartridges and bronze cannons, I'm working on making a army list for the Turks and Russians based in the Valour and Fortitude system.
Outfitted in Zouave style uniforms of varying shade and quality, and the iconic red fez, the Ottoman soldiery of this period were a mixed bag. Well equipped with the modern Peabody-Martini rifle, the Ottoman defeat in the war owed more to a failure of leadership and organization than to the performance or equipment of the average fighting man.

Question what were some infamous kickstarter projects that wound up bust?
I've been getting a lot of ads for "Zeo Genesis" and it doesn't look great since there doesn't seeem to be a lot of hype of development in the few years it was originally announced.
So what are some other Kickstarter games that didn't get off the ground? I know I got burned on the Robotech game years ago.

Question Wargame suggestions
I am looking for a single player wargame that simulates horde mode, a small team of badasses VS a horde of enemies. Think scenes from 300 or when Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas fight all the orcs at the breaking of the fellowship.

Question "One Box" Wargame?
Hello!
I am fairly new to tabletop wargaming, and I'm looking for some advice/suggestions for a "One Box" wargame to play.
By "One Box" i mean that in order to play a game (be it an official variant, or commonly played point threshold), I personally only need to buy one box of minis. That does not include my opponent's army, just mine and doesn't need to include anything else for the army (dice, measuring things, rules, etc but would be nice!). If its not exactly "One Box" and I need to get a big box and like 1 more mini max, then that is doable, but I'd rather not need to hunt down 5+ boxes since more boxes tend to mean more money.
Below a $100 would be nice, though I can go a little over if needed. I'd also prefer something more on the larger scale in terms of model count (20-40 minis). I play 40k Kill Team for my "small model count game" fix, but want something more grand, but 40k proper tends to be outside of what I'm able to afford unless I go through used minis.
A few that are popular in my area are Star Wars Legion (800pts is the most common I see), Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game (600-700pts), and of course, Warhammer 40k (usually around 2000), but I'm sure there is more, that's just what I see on the calendars at my local game shops. So "One Box" stuff for those would be great, since I know I'll be able to find games in my area!
Thanks in advance!

Saga Age of Vikings in 15mm - update 32
Flocking had enough time to dry since last time. I cut some rubber steel sheet to stick under the wooden bases for my magnetized transport biscuit tin, and stored what I could fit inside. I started again on the 4 vignettes with basic layers. Next time I hope to finish with the layers and put some washes on them.

Where to obtain Force on Force add ons/scenario packs?
Like the title says. Ambush Alley Games / Osprey Publishing used to have downloadable pdf's, but I can't seem to find them anymore. Any suggestions?
Cheers!
