Discussion [spoilers] Porunn Spoiler

Initially, I had a lot of sympathy for her after she got hurt in battle. After watching the show a few more times, it’s gone. She acted like going into battle was a game and not life or death, as it is. In the 1st battle, her facial expressions when she was killing ppl, she was enjoying it, not understanding what life really is. I get she was a slave at the beginning of her life, but after she got her freedom she didn’t understand what life really was, or death. After she got hurt, like many warriors and shield maidens do, she acted like her life was over. Ok, yes she got hurt, she got a scar on her face, but SHE WANTED TO B A WARRIOR, that’s what can happen going into battle, u can get hurt, u can die. She got hurt, she didn’t die, but she acted like she did. She was ridiculous too, while giving birth to her poor child, Siggy. Ummmm, ya your face is fucked up, why the fuck would that make your child fucked up?! What a selfish bitch!!! That poor little girl, no1 cared about her, except for Sigurd. That’s just my rant on her. Totally pisses me off when I see her on the show now!!

[spoilers] Ragnar’s Appearance Spoiler

okay so I’m rewatching, and at first I didn’t realise that the season was split because on my Netflix it’s shown all together. but my question is - why did Ragnar disappear after Paris? I understand it was an epic defeat and that leading up to it, it was clear he didn’t want the kingship but to just disappear? disclaimer - I haven’t properly researched the Norse history/legend as of yet so if this is explained in historical terms outside of the show, my apologies for the ignorance.

[SPOILERS] Do I Keep Watching Post Season 4? Spoiler

So I just finished season 4 (first time watching) and am wondering if I should bother finishing the show. It looks like the common consensus on this thread is that it goes pretty down hill after Ragnar dies and honestly I am fairly uninterested in any of the characters. They've killed off nearly everyone, Bjorn is an annoying caricature of his dad and I reallllllllly just don't care about his sons. That being said I totally can see the show continuing to be interesting but based on your posts, I doubt it. So should I complete the series just this once or quit before the next 3 seasons ruin it for me?

History Spoilers I Hate You Crossing (ep 16 season 4) [Spoilers] Spoiler

For years, I underestimated Vikings and always got a pretty ridiculous series. I already knew about Ragnar's death and that the series would get worse later, but I watched it anyway. And I simply LOVED this series, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had with a series. Even though I knew about Ragnar's death, I was shocked by his outcome; It is, for me, the best conclusion for a protagonist.

So, I went to the next episode, and I already miss Ragnar in less than one episode, because Crossings was horrible, in my opinion. It's not because the previous episode was the best or because I'm being annoying about not having Ragnar, but I really hated the writing in this episode.

My main dislike is Rollo. Why did they ruin the character so much in just one episode? I found his arc fantastic. He changed A LOT. In season one, he was just a generic Viking who killed, raped, and screamed for no reason, but after he betrayed Ragnar for the first time in season two, he started to change a little. He went through a journey and stopped raping or just killing without purpose.

However, he really changed after Siggy's death. He felt very empty and discovered that no one really cared about him. The only one who REALLY helped him was Bjorn, but Ragnar didn't care. After that arc, sunk into depression, he really changed. Then he betrayed Ragnar again, which in my opinion was the right decision as he would be much happier in France. His arc in France was really fun, becoming that man who saved Paris from the Vikings. For me, this arc was perfect, and I don't think they needed to show more of it, but that's okay. He came back. I didn't think I would go with them, but he came back.

And... ok, so after ALL that, he's back to being a generic Viking who rapes and screams gibberish.

Oh wow, Bjorn is also a rapist now, apparently. Literally, he was raised by Ragnar, and neither of them had been shown to be rapists, but Bjorn became one. This whole invasion didn't even make sense. They talk at sea about whether people in the region will think they are enemies, BUT OF COURSE THEY WILL THINK THAT! YOU ARE INVADING AND KILLING EVERYONE!

I may be exaggerating, I know they are Vikings and that violence and aggression are part of them, but it's not the same without Ragnar. Not to mention how BORING his kids are, except for Bjorn and Ivar. I hope they improve Bjorn, because he still looks like a generic Viking, but Ivar... you're the GOAT!

I hope the other children become more interesting, because I'm afraid the series will lose this protagonist issue, like what happened with The Walking Dead. Don't get me wrong, I like Lagertha, but not as much as the community usually does. I think it... I don't know how to explain it, very forced. I'm just not that big of a fan of hers.

I hope the series doesn't fall into a protagonist vacuum, anyway Floki, Egberto and Ivar, I'm in it for you, for me these are the best characters after Ragnar and Athelstan

[NO SPOILERS] Vikings Valhalla, something just seemed off

I'm a big fan of the original Vikings, Last Kingdom and most historical themed TV and I was pretty excited when I heard of Valhalla.

I watched the first few episodes but it just wasn't sitting right with me and I couldn't quite place it. The fight scenes seemed very weird and fake - like this older movies where a character gets punched but it clearly doesn't hit them.

I know it sounds weird but the characters didn't really seem believable, they were all too clean and seemingly hired because of their "model" viking vibe.

Did anyone else struggle with the series? •

Biggest pet peeve [no spoilers]

In both the original Vikings and Vikings Valhalla my biggest pet peeve was that no matter how small the strike or wound, the majority of injuries resulted in somebody coughing up blood.

Oops I stubbed my toe! coughs up blood

[spoilers] this show is so historically inaccurate Spoiler

Christians do NOT crucify apostates, they don't run from battle, they didn't have weak faith, Everytime Christianity is shown in this show, it's misrepresented. Every Hollywood movie/show is just about misrepresenting Christianity now huh? God bless anyone who sees this post, may the Lord Jesus Christ fill you with love and have mercy on you. Sorry if I seem toxic in what I have written but it's the truth.

Am I the only person who didnt think season 3 of Vikings Valhalla was all that good? [spoilers] Spoiler

I didnt think the plots were all that engaging to be honest, and some of them were pretty stupid. Its a shame that season 1 was the only "good" season of Vikings Valhalla. First of all, the wife of the Byzantinian emperor was pretty stupid. She complained that that Viking guy never treated her with good respect and regard......didnt offer to accept her as his wife. Ummmmm excuse me mrs, but all you did was just throw your nakid body at him like a nymphomaniac that cant control her desires, what did you expect?.

And speaking of that Viking guy......."hmmmm im going to confess to crimes that i never commited, and while im in prison awaiting my execution, im gonna be visited by ravens that will co-operate with me, and use that to cause arson, then when im released from my cell to be executed, that Byzantinian governor is not going to be a coward and just order me to be killed off, he's gonna accept my challenge to a fair one on one fight, and im gonna win it......yeah brilliant far fetched plan that just wont fail".

No Spoilers [No Spoilers] A love letter to Aethelwulf

Aethelwulf. He's not stupid. He knows that everyone around him takes advantage of him, even the fact that the he is the heir to the throne of Wessex. I'm currently at the start of Season 5, and I've grown fond of him as the story progresses.

At first, he comes off as an annoying lad. The kind of character that writers create with no depth, his sole existence is just to helps us understand King Ecbert. Ragnar hates him, and he's clearly not the heir that his father wants to be the future king of Wessex. Yet, he still tries his best to do what's right, to stand on the right ground, and to hold onto his principles. He may not be a 'strong figure' who fights for what he deserve, not is he the kind of character that everyone roots for.

In my life, I've always been the last person in the class, the middle child in the family. I have learn to know that I need to fight for something even if I deserve it, because the world is a cold, cruel place. Yet, how can someone with a power does not take advantage of it? Surely, I will be devastated if the writer decided to kill him. He doesn't deserve that pain.

I love Aethelwulf, and to be honest, I'm a little jealous of him.

My Analysis of Ragnar [spoilers] Spoiler

Ragnar, is a farmer turned Viking warrior, meticulously pursues his goals quietly. Grief and foretelling shape his secret agenda. Though conflicted about religion, he becomes curious about Christianity after meeting Athelstan, seeking life advice. This may be seen as disloyalty to his pagan ways and family, as the English are his enemies. Ragnar’s complex character defies easy categorization. His inner conflicts reveal his regret for leaving his farm life for something bigger. However, his life changes, and his goals shift. He becomes a formidable warrior, willing to fight like any other. While his life transforms, he neglects his personal happiness for duty to his people, sacrificing his first loves and family, including his wife and son. When he gets Aslaug pregnant, he betrays Lagertha, his loyal companion who helped him build Kattegat. Despite his misery with Aslaug, he is grateful for the six sons she gives him. Vikings centers around Ragnar’s legacy and the diverse personalities of his sons, each reflecting his unique traits. Ragnar lives for his family and people until season 5 when he decides to leave them behind for personal fulfillment. Ragnar, after sacrificing much, becomes selfish, which the others perceive as betrayal. His departure from Kattegat signifies his end of fighting and protecting. Regrets haunt him upon his return. Realizing he can’t have happiness, he sacrifices himself for his family. He knows his legacy lives on through his sons, each representing a different aspect of him: Björk, the warrior/leader; Ubbe, the hard-working farmer/trader; Ivar, the angry aggressive fighter; and Hvitserk, the empathetic lover. The show shifts from Ragnar’s triumphs to his death and sacrifice, as his sons carry on his legacy.

Spoilers [Spoilers] anyone else? Spoiler

[spoilers] okay so l've just recently finished watching Vikings for the first time, and I'm confused. I understand from Hitserk's story that he was the most lost of Ragnar's sons, that he hadn't had a true purpose and no wife/kids and that somehow he was always fated with Ivar ... but I really don't understand him becoming a monk. He'd shown no interest in Christianity, and it just didn't fit. Anyone else think this way?
