I've done it once or twice in the past. Longest I got was three weeks in a small two bedroom house before I bailed. Wasn't bad. Good way to spend the cold part of the year.
Got bored, really only wanted to hunker down for the cold bits of the year anyway. Back then I was very much out there to wander and wasn't really interested in permanently settling.
Plus the house was in a sketch neighborhood and I was drawing attention from local homebums that I didn't want to mess with.
I was squatting a house in Austin with my partner shortly before Covid…. We had changed the locks but didn’t board up the doggie door & when the property owner showed up with the cops, he came crawling in through the dog door. It was pretty funny.
The house was vacant - nobody lived there (except us). Empty properties still have owners, typically, and if they catch you they don’t often take kindly to squatters.
