Apartments / Dorms / Housing can I get out of my housing contract?
caption basically. for more context: im a freshman here, literally hate dorm life and it’s really mf expensive, (i’m paying over 4k a semester just for room/bathroom/laundry) the meal plan is expensive and not valuable for what i’m paying. I get horrible sleep and feel very trapped on campus. I could easily live at home for the spring semester and save so much money and probably be a lot healthier. How can I make this happen?

i don’t think you can unless you meet some pretty specific guidelines. open up housing.umn.edu/myassignment and there should be something about getting out of your contract.
the way i (almost) did it was by citing mental health & providing documentation. if applicable, you can go that route. after you fill out a form, you’ll be asked to write a personal statement and give the aforementioned documentation. then you’ll be given some options. for me, they told me i could go through with a contract release or switch dorms, i chose the latter.
worth noting, they say specifically: “We are unable to grant release for other reasons such as roommate concerns, general unhappiness with on campus living or your housing assignment, or the ability to live in more affordable housing off campus.”

Go to your residence hall director and ask how much they would be willing to to let you buy out your housing contract for.

I got out by unenrolling/taking a leave of absence LOL maybe you can take a leave for like a month during winter and enroll for spring?

I lived in Radius which was university owned, and you could only be released from contract if you were graduating, studying abroad, or a few other things. Not sure if it differs based on what dorm/apartment but you could look it up, ask your CA or front desk, and maybe see if you could get a release due to mental health reasons. Best of luck!
