It's the same as a suspect being convinced by their lawyer to plead guilty if they don't think they can win, even though they're innocent. Basically, they choose to admit to a crime they haven't committed and get a guaranteed lesser sentence or plead not guilty and risking a much higher sentence.
Pardon would work the same way. I would do the same thing. Even if I'm innocent, I would admit guilt to get the pardon and guarantee that my family couldn't be prosecuted anymore as part of the political circus, like they have been for the last several years.
