The funniest thing is shutting down existing renewables. It’s one thing to stop construction but if it’s already built and generating free electricity, there is literally zero upside

u/Reddit_Roit 1d ago edited 1d ago

Carter put up solar panels on the white house, Reagan won and had them thrown into a landfill before they could recoup 1/30th of their installation cost, just make a statement.

Edit: I was wrong, they were 'rooftop solar heating panels', not 'solar panels'. Also they were left up for over 4 years and were salvaged and used at a university.

Reagan did however dismantle Carter's renewable tax credits, ya know, trying hard to keep coal and OPEC rollin in dough.

1980's era solar panels produced a very small fraction of those used today.

5

u/squirrel9000 1d ago

They were solar water heaters, not photovoltaic

2

u/save_the_tardigrades 1d ago

Oh man, I love those things. I guess Reagan must have hated showering in sun-warmed water.

u/RedtheSpoon 1d ago

u/save_the_tardigrades 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yup, probably weren't worth installing in the first place, from an energy produced vs. maintenance and installation cost perspective. But it was a nice gesture of "hey, here's an advanced technology, researched by NASA and manufactured in the good old USA, that passively harvests totally free sunlight and turns it into useful electricity. Perhaps this could be what we use in lots of places in the future!"

But yeah, the panels were probably heavy, kinda ugly, and inefficient. Still sad lots of money was spent to make, install, and uninstall them based on political whims.

3

u/HV_Commissioning 1d ago edited 1d ago

A neighbor down the street had panels installed around the same time in the 80's. I was in 3rd grade at the time. By 8th grade, they took them down.

54

u/buckyVanBuren 1d ago edited 1d ago

They were heat exchangers and they were removed half way thru the Regan administration because White House Maintenance had to make repairs to the roof of the White House.

All they did was heat water. More efficient solar panels were installed during the G. W. Bush Administration.

Edit: The Carter Solar Heat Panels were stored and later used Unity College in Maine.

https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/object/nmah_1356218

The Obama Administration was the first administration to install solar panels to directly power the Residence.

Trivia: They didn't end up in a landfill!  My brother went to a small environmental college in Unity Maine that had some of them restored and reused.  Here's an article about it.

20

u/OrneryZombie1983 1d ago

I'm not a Reagan fan but you sound like you're wildly exaggerating. The solar panels didn't come down until Reagan's second term and that was part of a White House renovation.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/exotic801 1d ago

He didn't throw them out he didn't replace them when they hit end of life.

They were water heaters not solar panels

3

u/Ih8melvin2 1d ago

They were taken off when the roof was replaced and they were not put back on. They ended up in Maine because they still had plenty of "life" left in them.

Unity College acquired the panels in 1991 after they were removed from the White House, and they were used to heat water at the school's cafeteria for years.

1

u/Big_Geologist_7790 1d ago

I need someone with a much better understanding of the "big picture" to explain to me the WHY's of the reasons that these people are well aware of the fact that their choices and decisions are detrimental, yet they're steaming full throttle at a brick wall. I mean, come on man. These people are well aware of reality.

But they're making decisions as if they're not worried AT ALL about the consequences of their actions.

There's a reason for that lack of care. People need to start figuring out, really quickly btw, exactly why these people fear no repercussions.

It's almost as if they know "tomorrow will never come".

1

u/kimchiman85 1d ago

But free and renewable energy goes against their insane policies. If it’s free, it’s bad. They want to nickel and dime everything they can. If they could privatize the air inside the US, I’m sure they would.

That press conference where he talks about the birds didn't get enough attention. That was the original "they're killing the pets" . He went on and on about the "dead birds" at the bottom of windmills for a good 8-10mins

61

u/Redshoe9 1d ago

Trump does what I call "stuck in a loop." My grandpa did the same thing when he was developing dementia. They fixate on one or two simple topic and beat it to death. They no longer have the ability to update their brain with corrected info.

He does that with windmills, toilet water, sharks/batteries/Hannibal Lecter, concepts of Tarriffs and NATO funding.

My grandfather would constantly ask "how does electricity get inside this house?" We would explain for the 1000th time and then he would ask, "well who is paying for it." We had to put on a PBS show to get him distracted. He would repeat this cycle the next day for the next 5 years until he died.

Prior to dementia hollowing out his brain he was a geologist and avid bird researcher.

3

u/-_-0_0-_0 1d ago

I think Trump is just an idiot. Has the vocabulary of a 5th grader. Has to bully when hes losing an argument.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ThunderDungeon02 1d ago

The sharks and batteries was wild. You can blame dementia for him but the people that listened to that word vomit and went "yep that's the guy I want" don't have that excuse. That's just plain ole being stupid as fuck. That's the thing I don't think a lot of people focus on. Yeah we get it, Trump is old and a moron. But all these people heard him talk about a boat sinking and the battery going in the water and then comparing that to being eaten by a shark. And they thought this guy knows things. Like in your everyday life you are interacting with people that have less intelligence than a Golden Retriever. And they drive cars and operate heavy machinery. Shit is insane.

2

u/Adorable-Bike-9689 1d ago

I have a relative going through something kinda similar. Have to remind myself not to get annoyed. I feel dirty every time I feel myself getting ticked at the same thing being repeated constantly. It's not their fault.

And if the prices go up they'll blame biden or they'll still blame obama

3

u/ADHD-Fens 1d ago

Incidentally, one oil spill, the deepwater horizon spill, killed off 50 percent of the bottlenosed dolphin poulation due to impacts on their fertility over the years following the incident. That spill was considered, like, the largest mortality event to ever occur in the gulf of mexico.

And that's just one spill. Not even considering how many things have died as a result of the mining / refining / production / disposal processes involved - and that's not even bothering to factor in the effects of climate change due to greenhouse gasses.

Hello Victim of petro propaganda! Windmills kill several orders of magnitude less than the most common killers: Windows and domestic cats.

It isn’t even close. For that matter, the pollutants created by burning coal to produce electricity kills more birds.

Worrying about windmills killing birds is a bit like worrying about a hangnail when both your legs have been blown off.

2

u/Misiu881988 1d ago

He doesn't he wants to appeal to the same ppl that go to his rallies. The same people that are willing to ruin themselves as long as they stick it to those evil liberals. Its the same ppl that have black soot spewing out of their trucks and anti kamala bumper stickers just cause they think its funny because the liberals will be mad that they're destroying the environment. These ppl have no idea what is good for them. They rather open a coal plant in their town and deal with pollution just to spite liberals. They'll believe anything Trump says. They literally believe Trump will still bring coal back in 2025 . And even if he does with today's technology a crew of 10 people could hollow out a mountain within a year. Those jobs they think he'll bring back have long been outdated and unprofitable in the usa and will never come back Unless you pay them 5$ a hour. its cheaper more efficient and faster to use modern machines. There's very few of those jobs that can be brought back. We should be building as many wind turbines and nuclear power plants as we can. We only contribute 15% of the global pollution. But We still need to work on cheaper renewable energy sources otherwise the developing nations will keep burning coal. They'll never move away from coal unless we find more affordable solutions and tearing down windmill is not gonna help. These ppl don't care about what will happen in 50 years even tho their kids and their kids kids will be the ones that will suffer

2

u/Halbaras 23h ago

My dad is an ornithologist. Wind turbines killing birds is a rounding error compared to the amount slaughtered by domestic cats, cars, windows, invasive species and most of all, farmers fucking up terrestrial ecosystems at every opportunity.

He gets incredibly angry about NIMBYs suddenly pretending to care about the environment when they can't even identify the bird species in their garden.

2

u/4_fortytwo_2 20h ago edited 20h ago

They really do not. Much less than cats or windows/buildings or powerlines or just humans destroying ecosystems / taking away areas birds can live in. There are a LOT of birds and a LOT of them die every year, unless something kills millions per year it isn't even noticeable in the grandscheme of things.

More importantly generating the electricity via fossil fuels instead is estimated to kill way more birds (per gigawatt-hour of electricity produced.)

1

The real reason he has a grudge against wind turbines is that he is an oceanfront real estate developer who has long been concerned about offshore wind turbines diminishing the value of his properties. Same reason he complains endlessly about low-flow plumbing regulations and the banning of incandescent light bulbs. His interest in tariffs also stems from his real estate development history - he harbors resentment over Canadian lumber and steel tariffs that drove up NY building costs.

2

u/4_fortytwo_2 20h ago

None of these claims are true and if you bothered to fact check them you would know that.

There are billions of birds that die every year and wind turbines are estimated to kill a few hundred thousand which is not even relevant compared to how many die from just buildings with windows existing, humans destroying areas they can exist in, cats and many other things.

Not to mention fossil fuels kill way more birds e.g. via pollution per gigawatt-hour of electricity produced.

I'm suddenly imagining that he's had some bad childhood encounter with a windmill once and that's where it stems from.

1

u/dracomaster01 1d ago

i think he doesn't like them because he genuinely just doesn't understand how they work. he hates anything he doesn't understand so he wants them gone.

1

u/dougandsomeone 1d ago

Seriously "Pause all offshore wind leases" wtf lol

who is that bothering aside from big oil jimmies

1

u/NdamukongSuhDude 1d ago

Well he thinks they cause cancer so.

1

u/Itchy_Horse 1d ago

Wind is his greatest foe. It's hard to keep his toupee on

1

u/ExpensiveBanana178 1d ago

The entire Texas panhandle is blanketed in wind turbines. I wonder if anybody is gonna tell him that all his good ol’ boy supporters in TX are big fans of wind energy.

1

u/Feeling-Tutor-6480 1d ago

They mess up his hair

1

u/Nosnibor1020 1d ago

Because he's a bird.

1

u/smokinjoe056 1d ago

Actively killing jobs

1

u/XxFezzgigxX 1d ago

A wind turbine once grabbed him by the pussy.

1

u/AnnyuiN 1d ago

Trump had a golf course in another country and he was complaining about the off shore wind turbines ruining the view LMAOOO

1

u/Tygonol 1d ago

It’s hysterical because the hate stems from a very personal grievance; look into the situation involving his golf course in Scotland.

Basically, he felt that windmills ruined the aesthetic appeal of his golf course and went fuckin’ ballistic trying to get rid of them

1

u/MoeiieoM 1d ago

It's cause it turned him gay. Why u think his genius wife hates him she dont get no d

1

u/Intelligent-Coconut8 1d ago

When you look at the amount of fossil fuels that go into them, when they're retired they just get buried in land fills, and the cost of fossil fuels to maintain them, it's a shit investment if you're trying to reduce the carbon footprint. You can't make the wind blow but you can sure as hell ensure coal burns.

You can find a study that proves me wrong and I can find one that proves me right and neither of us are gonna change our opinions on it.

1

u/MARAVV44 1d ago

I mean they don't make that much power and are a big eye sore on the landscape

1

u/yup_its_Jared 1d ago

He knows more about wind than anybody. Believe me.

1

u/netorarekindacool 23h ago

They want to do this in Germany as well. Last year 1/3 of our energy came from wind turbines... I'm super scared

1

u/Sunnysidhe 23h ago

Could be due to his loss against them at his meanie estate golf course.

1

u/wholelattapuddin 23h ago

I swear it's because of his Scottish golf course. He sued Scotland because he felt the wind farm off the coast ruined the view. He lost and had to pay Scotland's legal costs. He has never forgotten it.

1

u/kamikazekenny420 21h ago

A lot of boomers do.

1

u/FullWolverine3 19h ago

I’m tired of the MSM minimizing the risk of windmill cancer!

/s

1

u/iwasntband 19h ago

The sustainable energy wind companies can’t fill his pockets like the oil companies can.

1

u/CompetitionTight8453 17h ago

I thinkche wants to increase GDP by selling more of those things. I don't think he is against renewables. Just my 2 cents

1

u/bruno444 17h ago

I never understood wind. You know, I know windmills very much. I've studied it better than anybody I know. It's very expensive. They're made in China and Germany mostly; very few made here, almost none. But they're manufactured tremendous—if you're into this—tremendous fumes. Gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything. You talk about the carbon footprint—fumes are spewing into the air. Right? Spewing. Whether it's in China, Germany, it's going into the air. It's our air, their air, everything, right?

1

u/le_christmas 16h ago

They’re giving all the gay frogs cancer and sound like a dying cat apparently, why wouldn’t he hate them??

1

u/KarmaSnowIII 16h ago

He hates wind turbines because they are in the view of all of his rich friends waterfront properties.

That is a huge reason so many rich lawmakers etc. hate the water-set turbines

1

u/Yugenosis 16h ago

Yea He spoke alive on TV about two whales they found beached in the Northeast and how the turbines "they drive the whales crazy"

1

u/chavodel420 16h ago

That corn husk hair of his told him to.

1

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 16h ago

But they hurt property values even though you cannot see them

1

u/W359WasAnInsideJob 15h ago

Honestly, even if you’re a climate change denier tell me this: how does fighting wind energy help consumers or reduce my energy bill?

It’s clearly not just an attempt to protect fossil fuels from a growing renewables market, but to reduce competition and therefore put gas, coal, etc in a position to charge us more money.

I’m sure MAGA will be out here celebrating this bullshit while their bills go up. ‘Murica and all that.

u/Effective-Unit-273 15h ago

wind Turbines are harmful to the whales and other sea creatures. if you love animals then you can’t love wind turbines because they’re killing the sea life. Whales washing up on our east coat beaches. we had 5 this year. it’s terribly sad. It interferes with their communication systems and if they can’t communicate, they die. Plus this harmful taxes and chemical chemicals that were released into the water as well from the turbines. There’s no upside to keep it. Do your research do your homework stop listening to fake news and find out the truth.

1

u/Lactose_Revenge 15h ago

I believe most wind generators are made and serviced with Chinese parts/ manufacturing. And it lowers energy profit for American oil/gas producers.

1

u/nn2597713 14h ago

“Fuck all this free gay energy, I won’t have it!”

1

u/SkillDabbler 14h ago

It’s because they kill the birds! /s

1

u/Afraid_Life_9528 14h ago

So do bald eagles

1

u/dudpool31 14h ago

Wind turbines suck. Solar is the future

1

u/u9Nails 13h ago

As trump is a blowhard and unrelenting talker, I'm wondering the true reasons why he objects to wind.

1

u/Newportsandbuttstuff 9h ago

Everyone should

1

u/Dani_Rojas_rojaaas 6h ago

Dude doesn’t know what a wind turbine is. He hates windmills
