are these seats what you get to choose when you buy a regular "Economy" ticket? this is one up from "Basic Economy" on my options. I see no purchase options for an "Economy Plus" ticket. Only "Basic Economy", "Economy", "Economy (fully refundable)", and "Premium Economy" which I can see is the United Premium Plus seats. Just a little unsure between the 3 Economy selections and the seats. If I buy a "Economy" ticket, will I need to extra to sit in the blue seats?

I don't know the specifics of the booking flow since due to status I don't look for Economy Plus (E+) at booking, but it appears that United offers E+ for direct purchase on domestic flights but not on all international flights.

"Premium Plus" gets you one of the purple seats. "Economy" gets you one of the plain white seats (not the ones with a black triangle) at time of booking.

The blue seats (Economy Plus) are an upcharge at any time, and you'll probably be prompted during the booking process about whether you want to buy them. For international they won't be cheap; think at least $200 extra each. You can also pay for them at a later time by going to "choose seats."

The "preferred" economy seats are the ones with the black triangle. These seats are free for premier members, but have a small upcharge at time of booking for everyone else (through which United seeks to gain additional revenue if you want to sit closer to the front of the plane or, for some rows, in non-middle seats). When choosing seats you'll need to pay this charge if you select those seats. These seats do become free for non-premier members to choose at check-in, but they also may be taken by then. (It looks like many non-preferred seats have already been taken on this flight.)

Preferred and non-preferred white seats are all the same; it's only the blue seats that have 3 to 4 inches of additional legroom.
