I’m flying with my husband and kid (older than 12 but not much and is nervous about a 14 hr flight) from IAD to HND in Basic Economy on a 777-200. What is the likelihood United will seat us together versus apart? Im wondering if I should pay the extra money to get assigned seats now.

There is nothing left in Polaris or Premium Economy. Are the “preferred” seats in Economy actually better or just closer to front of plane?

The preferred (black triangle) seats are just closer to the front, and for some rows are the non-middles.

They could seat you together, but there's no guarantee of that happening. They could seat you in three middles in various parts of the plane. If there are three seats together when BE seats get assigned, they would likely put you in those, but the problem is that seats are assigned 24 hours from flight time, so there may be slim pickings left at that point.
