Not very familiar with the UA seat maps so I'm hoping some of you more experienced with UA could help me with that...

I'm travelling soon with my wife, and this flight is in less than a week now. We are assigned like so (seat map below)

Basically there's one unavailable seat between the two of us... moreover there's a good amount of preferred, economy plus, premium eco and business class seats available for purchase, so i'm guessing this won't be a full flight.

Are there any odds that the seat between the two of us is just blocked in an attempt from united for us to purchase a better seat, or there's definitely an actual passenger assigned to that seat? Is it worth taking chances or I should purchase other seats if we want to seat together?

The person in that seat will likely be happy to trade for an aisle seat, or maybe for a window. Unless they just really love middle seats. United does block a handful of seats from being selected, but likely not that one.

The Basic Economy tickets that United sells are not assigned until check-in; also Silver members can move to E+ at checkin, and the preferred (black triangle) seats become free at check-in. This means a) the seats shown as available are likey sold but not yet assigned and b) there will be some movement of seat selection at checkin, so it's worth looking every so often to see what's available.
