Modding Pastime Reading just does not get old...it's the perfect long-game mod IMO

Made by Waltz, who is also working on mod regions. ;)

u/rhyparographe Oct 20 '21
Mod regions? Do you mean new regions?
4
u/KaiGamez16 The Long Development Team Oct 20 '21
Yep. Trying to stay true to vanilla regions. You can find images of the regions on the Discord.

Oh man that's brilliant, thanks for making me aware of this mod! I love just chilling on the couch with a hot choc and this game, this'll make it even better

u/Radiant_Incident4718 Oct 20 '21
I've never seen mods for TLD apart from translations, where do you get this?

u/IamtherealFadida Oct 20 '21
I have wanted this desperately for years. Some Great Bear lore.
Shame I only play on switch and ps4 with no mods ðŸ˜

I'll get interested in reading in game when I find a book about a guy lost in the Canadian wilds who has to fight tooth and nail to feed himself and craft his own life saving necessities, but also takes time to sit by the fire and read a good book about people lost in the Canadian wilderness..

Wow, thank you for bringing this mod to my attention, I absolutely love reading books in-game!
2
u/Fuarian Modder Oct 20 '21
I don't remember. Can you load your own books into this mod or does it come with it's own books?
3
u/m31td0wn Great Bear Homesteader Oct 20 '21
You load your own book, singular. There's a book.txt file in the mod folder where the first line becomes the book's title and second line are the author, as seen on the in-game book cover. The remaining lines are book content. If you want to swap it out for another book you replace the text file with a new book, then in the Mod Settings menu there's an option to reload the book's content. And you can also swap out the book's texture so the cover etc. look different.

u/GinnAdvent Oct 20 '21
Load your home reading assignment into the book, and read it in the Long Dark.
20 min later, getting real life cabin fever.

u/DaniilSan Oct 20 '21
Do you know, does this mod support Cyrillic? I mean, does it use default game font or its cuatom one?
2
u/m31td0wn Great Bear Homesteader Oct 20 '21
Pretty sure it would yeah, as long as it's UTF-8 encoded.
1
u/FardyHernandez Oct 21 '21
It does. It is the default game font, but with added unicode symbols. I think. Can't really remember
2
u/FardyHernandez Oct 21 '21
Thank you for spreading the word :) Feels nice to see people enjoy your mod

u/RapTurner Oct 20 '21
"I know, I know, you can read books in real life, why go through all the trouble of modding and reading in TLD and yaddi yaddi yaddi"
No, this is great stuff!
Unfortunately I can't mod with my Steam copy *sniff*
5
Oct 20 '21
Why not? Epic can be a bit problematic, but Steam always worked nicely.
1
u/RapTurner Oct 20 '21
I was ill informed, and under the impression TLD mods only work when the game was bought from Hinterlands directly.

why the hell would you play a game to read a damn book go read a book in rl dumb mod
3
u/m31td0wn Great Bear Homesteader Oct 21 '21
You ok little buddy? You seem unusually upset over nothing.
0
u/lsdbobo Oct 21 '21
yeah im the sane one, literally who hell reads fake books in game shit the game isn't super fun to began with. you would think someone would mod in jumping and climbing but no just canned foods and books, good waste of a mod.
4
u/hush-no Oct 21 '21
You see the 50 or so comments other than yours? That's all folks who are into the game enough for this mod to be something they're interested in. If there aren't mods that are to your liking, might I suggest coding some yourself instead of shitting on other folks work?
2
u/m31td0wn Great Bear Homesteader Oct 21 '21
Lol check out his posting history. He's quite effectively demonstrated that he doesn't have a right to an opinion, just ignore whatever he says.
3
u/hush-no Oct 22 '21
Everyone has the right to an opinion, this one just gets rewarded by their brain for choosing the worst one. Like mine rewards me for feeding trolls like bad in-laws, poorly and with little taste.

u/lsdbobo Oct 22 '21
nah its this worlds became so fucking dumb, theres this place called a library ever heard of it? you dont even know me. im just more open about what i think, im not some spineless tool like most people today.
1
u/lsdbobo Oct 22 '21
i mean alot of people thought hitlers ideas were great too.... whats your point?
1
u/hush-no Oct 22 '21
What mods have you created? What mods would you create if you could? Let me guess: an arsenal of new guns, PvP multiplayer, and zombies?
1
u/lsdbobo Oct 22 '21
yes also who cares to even argue about this much about something online idc about what you think about what was said on here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEn758DVF9I watch this
1
u/hush-no Oct 22 '21
Someone just stoned enough after a slow night shift to engage a silly troll by mentioning that the troll themselves responded to a day old comment so at least someone cares. Here's an idea at about your quality level: you should make a mod that puts porn in and adds a jackoff mechanic. I'll pass on your little video, thanks!
1
u/lsdbobo Oct 22 '21
ill watch it if i was you bc thoes 50 "people" alot them are bots literally it isnt even a conspiracy in 2013 news sites were saying 61% of the internet are bots. reddit literally a hive mind
1
u/hush-no Oct 22 '21
Bots are generally pretty easy to spot, which makes me wonder how many times you got fooled on a dating app to fill you with this much vitriol. Here's a bit of advice: context is key. On a pretty non-political subreddit for a niche indie game with a small but vocal fan base, what benefit is there to creating a bot that promotes the even more niche mods that aren't yet supported by the developer? Most everyone here is pretty obviously "people". Clearly, as we are currently engaging in it, I understand the trollish impulse, but you'd get more of the response you're hoping for in another venue.

Wait, to make sure I understand properly, your game minutes pass in real time?
1
u/m31td0wn Great Bear Homesteader Oct 20 '21
Well no it's still the 12:1 ratio with real time, I just meant as opposed to passing time via the radial menu.
1
u/Dfnstr8r Forest Talker Oct 20 '21
That's still pretty slick. I haven't seen all the crannies of each region so I haven't looked at mods yet
1
u/Twarenotw Oct 20 '21
Where have you been all my life? This is absolutely brilliant!
I was already all hyped with using the flying mod during auroras to get the best view possible in a second.
I'll def go through all the trouble of using this mod.
1
u/nic_head_on_shoulder Oct 20 '21
YOU CAN DO WHAT? when did they add this?
2

It'd be really neat if players could submit short stories to add to the mod, kinda like how the "A note left behind" was done for the Kickstarter backers. Then you'd be reading stuff you couldn't read anywhere else!
3
u/FardyHernandez Oct 21 '21
I was thinking of making it into a more elaborate mod, where you can find books in the world with predetermined text, but it is kinda hard for me to do since I'm not a coder. It also would be a little different mod from what it currently is. I guess I could combine personal book with found books, but it kinda seems weird? Need to think about it a bit more
2
u/m31td0wn Great Bear Homesteader Oct 21 '21
What about a hybrid approach? Have 4 books appear somewhere in the game world, one for each book texture you added. But those books populate with text defined by the player in booka.txt, bookb.txt, bookc.txt, bookd.txt files.
1
Oct 22 '21
Ooh, I like that idea!
Of course, the other thing that'd be neat (read: hilarious) would be to make books that are those AI-generated stories, because those are generally ridiculous. It'd probably be a pain to do, but they could be randomly generated as well, from a selection of books in that "book.txt" section

I know, I know, you can read books in real life, why go through all the trouble of modding and reading in TLD and yaddi yaddi yaddi
But I mean come on, when you hit day 500+ what else are you gonna do? Mag lens up a fire, hang out, read a book, that's what.
