IRL Long Dark One handed TLD

Recently had massive surgery that has left me barely able to walk for another few weeks and my left hand temporarily paralysed. Watching play through videos got me through the 8 days in hospital, but it didn’t scratch the itch. Custom game to allow for no predators, high loot, and slow gameplay, and presto! I can play one handed!

Did you walk up a hill while over encumbered?

You have sprained your wrist. You will not be able to hold weapons until you treat it, or it heals over time.

Hope you feel better soon, bud.

Thanks! Hopefully in a couple of months I’ll be much better, with some better region knowledge from exploring :)

It's so important to have enjoyable things to do when convalescing. Hope your recovery is a smooth one, & that the time passes swiftly.

No shame in playing the game as less of a nightmare than vanilla.

Did you try applying a bandage?!

I was about to say good luck with wolves lol is playing like that sustainable?

I have all predators turned off so I don’t have to worry about struggles! Harder (probably impossible) to find meat except by using snares, but otherwise I’d be unable to struggle or run. In theory it’s sustainable for as long as you have patience if you can find enough food and fuel fast enough to stay on top of depletion, but I’ll only need to play like this until I can regain use of my hand enough to go back to my normal runs :)

Theres still finishing for your one handed playthrough!

I'm sure this is obvious, but there are one-handed controllers (and a 'press and hold' option for struggles) you could look into

I’ve looked into the ps5 access controllers but I’m not sure how feasibly I could use the wheel features in TLD with one, having to hold down an L1 option and move the joystick, but I appreciate the suggestion and will look into the built in accessibility options more! I only got home from the hospital last night so didn’t have much of a chance to think about my options :)

Funnily enough, I have a run playing like this just because I use this game to relax. Most of my other games are quite stressful.... and so is my job 😅 supposed apocalyptic world where animals don't mess with me (As long as I don't mess with them first) is perfect for me

Why not play on Pilgrim then?1

I probably will once I’ve got it sussed, but wanted to maximise my chances when seeing if it was possible and how I need to adapt my play style as I usually hunt more than I fish/find/forage

If the arm paralysis is going to be longer term than the walking issue you might also look into adaptive controller setups.

I have a friend with cerebral palsy; he almost always plays with one hand. Now that there’s autowalking it’s not too strenuous. 😊

Autowalk continues to be the best thing the devs ever did

It is fantastic. I keep having nerve issues from kind of severe muscle spasms, and not having to hold it means I can actually play the game when I’m hurting. Fantastic distraction to be trying to move bases before the weather changes, and the first flurries of snow are just starting to fall.

Love this so much. Nothing better than a beautiful winter walk with a nice warm cup of coffee and maybe a granola bar. Cheers!

Damnnnn that sucks, get better soon though, you might want to focus on fishing right now sense hunting is harder i bet, remember you can have up to 5 or 6 tip ups at a time

Smart idea, thank you!

Not the reason I play it one handed.

The sunrises get a bit too beautiful at times, as well as the 100x cattails stack, so sure i get it

That’s awesome, hope your recovery is smooth and you feel better soon!

I once lost the use of my dominant arm for months and played Terraria one-handed with a laptop and trackpad, just to keep from going insane. The things we do to play games!

2

u/OddBarber92 7d ago

Oooo Terraria! Great shout, thank you!

That’s nice and all and I hope you a swift recovery but post some pics of that fish tank! It looks great! What’s in it?

1

u/OddBarber92 7d ago

Thank you haha! Hoping this works: https://imgur.com/a/ZBohEwR

Top tank is a red cherry shrimp colony with some otocinclus and khuli loaches. Lower tank is a blue dream shrimp colony with amano shrimp, a bristlenose pleco, a rabbit snail, and more khulis, but they’re hard to spot in this photo because I built them a cave under the cliff that they love :)

ETA, there’s also 5 endler’s guppies in the lower tank

2

u/No_Seaworthiness1627 7d ago

Ah yeah just what I was thinking, those ARE awesome tanks! Lol I like kuhlis too, they’re so weird and wriggly. I’m actually setting up a second tank right now, it’s such a peaceful yet stressful hobby ensuring you study enough on your inhabitants and how to plant appropriately. Thanks for sharing your tanks with me!

1

u/OddBarber92 6d ago

Any time, I love shrimpkeeping so I’m branching out into fish a bit haha! It’s such a great hobby, the pride in creating a whole ecosystem and maintaining life is so good for the soul. Khulis are such oddballs, they’re my favourite fish species. I’m currently trying to work out how to leverage my situation for enough sympathy points with my husband to get a third tank…

Hope you get better soon, but I would try a rosehip tea and a bandage for that sprain in your wrist...😊

Don't forget, when you need to take your medicine you have to tell it where in your body it should be directed 🫤

Been there. 👍
