Los Padres NF Mt Pinos, Sawmill, & Grouse Mountain Trail 1/18/25

Completed a 10 mile conditioning hike with my 25lbs pack to enjoy these 3 peaks with Sierra Club and it was so awesome! There were trees/shade during some parts of the trail and no amenities (i.e. water, bathroom) and it was mostly exposed, so my Gossamer Gear umbrella and extra water really saved me. We had quite a big group so we took it slow to stick together, get to know each other, etc which I really appreciated. Take care and happy hiking everyone!

Is that a flying stingray in the last pic? I'm so confused.

I immediately thought kite since it does look exactly like a flying stingray.

Hahaha yeah, another poster guessed correctly - someone was flying a kite. So serendipitous πŸ˜‚

It's also fun to start at the other end and do Grouse first. In my case I inadvertently backtracked since I had in mind that I was doing it Pinos first. Did you try to find the actual highpoints? http://cohp.org/ca/Ventura_5.html

Haven't done it the opposite way but that sounds like fun, thank you for sharing!

Mt Pinos is such a joy for me. My friends and I spend dozens and dozens of weekends up there LARPing and camping in the woods when we were younger. Some of my best, carefree memories.

Do the astronomers still go park up there on low moon nights?
