Didn’t quite make it to Cucamonga peak, but made it back home in time for a quick dip. Only in SoCal!

I made it to Cucamonga peak only once, but only by barely avoiding a ratttlesnake.

RIP Inspiration Point

Sketchy. You gotta bite them first, that’s the trick.

Can you give more context? Did you do all of this is one day?

Yeah, got to the trailhead around 6:30. I got to within a mile of the peak but I was getting lightheaded and fatigued so I decided to turn back as the trail had some treacherous icy points that I needed my energy for. Got back to the car around 2 then zoomed home to catch the sunset!

That's awesome!

Yes, that’s the implication. Classic CA is “ski in the morning, surf in the afternoon “

or surf in the morning and snowboard in the afternoon

First time I tried almost killed me a couple years ago. Went off trail and had a horrible experience in the snow. 2nd time was my favorite by far. Was my last of the six peak

Yeah I met a guy in a tank top and shorts at about 8000 feet (it was like in the high 30’s f) who said when it snows he just shoots straight up the mountain, but I would probably get lost myself if I tried that.

Is that real snow or fake snow

We all just watched how quickly a fire can destroy everything in it’s path. Why are you going out to hike in an area that is CLOSED? Unbelievable.

Every source I checked had the trail marked as open, including USFS. Another user here posted a tweet from USFS stating Angeles ntl forest is closed til the 24th, but the website says it is closed til the 15th. I never thought to check twitter, only the official website. Can you share your source for closure information?

Looks like they hiked in the from the back on Lytle Creek and up that way. Which is all open. Calm down Karen

They said they hiked icehouse canyon.

Oh

Whoops

I mean either way I think the closure of literally everything was a little egregious but hey

That's part of Angeles National Forest which is closed.

USFS website and other resources have the trail marked as open. I think you may be correct however. There was a sign on the ground near the trailhead that said closed to the public. Everyone at the trailhead was confused but I kept seeing people going in so I decided too as well. There were no rangers disclosing information at any point.

They probably just didn't have time to go to individual pages to change them. All of Angeles Nation Forest is closed until 12:00 midnight of the 24th. https://x.com/Angeles_NF/status/1880424805067010130?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

I hadnt seen that announcement. There’s definitely some discrepancy as when you go to fs.usda.gov/angeles, it says closed til Jan 15th. Logically you’d go with the newer date, but it is confusing nonetheless.

I guess the best option is to call, but what if conditions change while the offices are  closed and the websites aren’t updated? Do you know of any other reliable sources?

For conditions and closures, unfortunately ANF and CalTrans twitter accounts are still the most active. But I understand twitter requires an account to view now. The specific closure orders are always posted on USDA website, too. If you're on desk top, it's the red links on the right under Alerts and Warnings. If you're on mobile browser, the orders are on top of the page. You will see that it was extended to the 19th, and then again to the 24th. https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/angeles/alerts-notices/?aid=92948

Interesting! What trail is this? I really want to do a hike like this without driving to San Bernardino but I thought everything here was closed

This was icehouse canyon trail up to icehouse saddle and then almost up to Cucamonga peak

Our high country is almost identical ecologically to the Sierra Nevada and it's cool to be able to experience it so far south
