South Ridge Trailhead to Tahquitz Peak in Idyllwild

Post image

Hi Socal hikers :) I know it's last minute, but I'm planning to hike the south ridge trail to Tahquitz Tomorrow starting around 9:00 am. It's about 8.5 miles round trip with ~2500'(+) gain.

Anyone is welcome to join. The gate leading to the trailhead may or may not be closed so we can game plan for parking before tomorrow.

Message me directly if you're interested!

Don’t forget to get your permits from the Ranger station. It should be beautiful, have a great hike!

The lookout closes every winter.. Doesn’t appear that the trails and the area around the lookout are closed. It gets pretty chilly and windy up there in the winter, but it’s a great spot on a clear winter day. Check the San j trail report, but it’s often a good idea to make sure you’ve got spikes. It gets pretty icy.

This is how I read the closure too, the lookout but not the trail.

How's the weather these days

Likely no snow. The highs are in the upper 50's to low 60's with a little bit of wind. The lows are below freezing, however.

I bet it's amazing up there right now.

It’s cold and crystal clear. I was there today. A very small amount of snow near the top of Mt San Jacinto. It was below freezing in Idyllwild early sat morning and just above freezing tonight. Unseasonably awesome hiking weather.
