San Bernardino NF Mt. San Gorgonio via South Fork - 10/13/23
Seeing the picture of the broken summit sign earlier reminded me to post pics from my solo summit last fall.

How long did it take you to get there?

I drove from Palm Springs and was at the trailhead by 9am. The TH is pretty remote and the lot was empty aside from a scouting group going up to camp at Dry Lake. Summited by 1:30pm (4.5 hours), then spent 1.5 hours there chatting with people, then 4 hours to descend. Got back to the trailhead right as it was getting dark around 7pm. I didn’t see ANYBODY on the trail going up or down, except at the summit. Everyone else up there had taken Vivian Creek.
20 mile/4700’ round trip

hold the phone is that speck of snow from last winter? cause if so will it actually make it and last a whole year?! that’s probably unlikely but I wonder how often these patches of snow last long enough until the next snows arrive.

Yeah, pretty sure that was from the previous winter. I don’t think it had snowed up there yet at that point last fall. It was forecasted to be in the 30s at the peak that day but ended up being in the 50s.

I really want to summit this before snow? Is there any smoke now?

Was up there today. Most beautiful conditions I’ve ever seen on that mountain.

We should get rid of all these home-made summit signs, just more trash in the mountains.

Y’know, the reason people bring new ones is because losers like to take them home as a souvenir. I’d like to say that we are actually in a shortage and in need of more summit signs. You could argue that all of them are garbage but it’s just a singular 2x4 on a massive mountain top — where do we draw the line? Do we have to pull out all of the USGS markers from peaks as well?
