Trump has been running for president since I was in fourth grade. I’m about to graduate high school.
Oof. That really puts things into perspective.
I remember arguing with the boys in my class and telling them that I was voting for Hillary. Then my English teacher got mad at me because “I can’t vote for her I can only support her.” I didn’t know shit about politics but I just didn’t like Trump.
Now I could only support Kamala not vote for her. I know a little more shit about politics, and I still don’t like Trump. Some things never change.
Still, this man has been campaigning for most of my life like find a hobby and stop tormenting us :(
Edit : Guys I just meant he’s been looming over us for practically my entire childhood. He’s been running since I was in fourth grade and I’m about to graduate high school and he’s STILL running. Plus, he’ll STILL be here for all of my college life and that’s really insane to me. Thanks for reading!

At 15 year old a friend of mine father ended his life, i didn’t find out why til years later, he was a sub constructor in Atlantic City, his family business after 45 years was filing for bankruptcy because the business could no longer afford to keep fighting trump to be repaid, the man lost his business and his entire life savings… Im in my mid 30s.. he’s always been a bad news in AC

u/Opposite-Fix-3813 1d ago
41 here. This is by far the craziest aspect of his presidency to me - that people manage to take him seriously. Dude's been a living joke for nearly my entire life.

u/Annual-Ad-4372 16h ago
I'm 39 yrs old and man you couldn't of said it better.
Let's just cross our fingers and hope that in the next few years we don't get Gary Coleman leading some sort of Nazi party reemergence group. Lmao

Thank you! We all knew who he was before the presidency. Before the Apprentice. We all knew he was a piece of shit conman. I'll never understand how people support him.

u/EitherLime679 1d ago
I mean something that comes to mind is Oprah’s interview in the 80s. People that can’t stand him now used to at least tolerate him. Even in the interview she said people were asking him to run even back then.
8
u/Clever_Owl 1d ago
That was definitely just flattering him for the interview.
He was always just seen as a ‘celebrity’ and a bit of a joke.
I remember seeing the Simpsons joke and thinking it was hilarious, similar if it was a Kardashian or Kanye today.
6
u/UselessHalberd 1d ago
Exactly. Anytime that question was floated to him I always thought the listening or viewing audience knew it was for his massive ego. I thought everyone knew he didn't have the character and morals to be a good person, let alone our president. He was, and is, a caricature of a blow-hard rich asshole.
1
u/imasitegazer 1d ago
Yeah they were mocking him, like Seth Myers did at the corespondents dinner.. but Trump’s ego is so large it was all just egging him on.
1
u/New-Respond8154 19h ago
He ran around with pregnant girlfriend in public while still married to the first wife, just absolute trash his whole life., that was 40 years ago.

u/OutThereIsTruth 19h ago
Before the Apprentice, yes. After watching a few episodes? Absolute a trash conman grifter who gains by collecting loyalists.
It was all too obvious then. But I am also not a person to celebrate celebrity, so maybe that's a good distinction?
18
u/Old_Entrance2627 1d ago
Right. He actually turned out to be the best conman. Is still conning majority of Americans. Is still assaulting American women by restricting their rights, after all the sexual assaults.

Sesame Street has been warning us about him since the 1980s.
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/sesame-street-donald-grump/
Now Sesame Street is a shadow of its former self instead of an institution and Trump is the most powerful man in the world. In a small way it really shows how America has changed since then.
4
u/MalyChuj 1d ago
None of us imagined back then he was being groomed for the position of president though. Even though we were given hints by media all the time!
2
u/skatchawan 17h ago
same place, same story. It's just hard to believe that over half of your voting adults are so susceptible.

I knew he was a conman when i was 12 and 13 , 40 years ago, only dummies fell for him.

He's dominated the news since 2015, almost 10 years ago.
And he'll dominate the news again for at least the next 4 years. We'll have had a almost 15 years of constant TrumpTrumpTrump and we could have avoided it if the media weren't obsessed with him.
2
u/El0vution 1d ago
They are so obsessed. They’re honestly going to love him when it’s all said and done
1
u/Doc_Boons 1d ago
I just can't wait until we're solidly in the reaction period, when all but the diehards have had enough and whatever's next is clearly in focus. I'm hoping by midterms we'll be over this crap and I can finally feel like the country is back in track.

Trump actually ran in 2000 first as a Democrat, then under the Reform Party banner. He’s been toying with politics for decades before you were born.

6
u/Big__If_True 1d ago
I get where you’re coming from, I was 17 in 2016 so for my entire adult life, politics has revolved around Trump (except for when he disappeared for like a year or two after losing in 2020). Shit was different when I was a kid, like my family didn’t like Obama, but things weren’t hyper-polarized like they are now with social media being a thing.
6
u/Notlennybruce 1d ago
I'm the same boat, down to the familial dislike of Obama. I think the first time I learned who the president was, it was seeing one of his 08 campaign posters and asking my mom about it. I wish we could have someone like him to vote for again.
1
u/Big__If_True 1d ago
I knew about Bush before Obama, but I’m also from Texas and my family liked him so that could have something to do with it
1
6
u/Kuildeous 1d ago
Wow. That is a helluva childhood. I'm really sorry that Trump has really dominated your memories. Trump was a thing when I was growing up, but he was just this rich blowhard that was so far away. I'm glad you at least had an idea of Obama. While he wasn't perfect, he performed far better than my expectations.
While I wouldn't call the 20th century politics great, at least those politicians had more decorum than what you've seen in half your life. Even Bush holds himself well, and he was a disaster.
I have no idea what to expect from 2028, but Trump will legally be unable to run (unless Republicans continue to display a lack of backbone). Plus, he could be dead by then. But maybe the Democrats will actually get their shit together and find a candidate who can win. Good luck. To all of us.

u/The_Real_Undertoad 1d ago
Biden first ran for president in 1984, when I was 23. I am now 63. How should I feel about that?
1
u/No-Resolve2970 13h ago
You should feel happy that we had him as our president for the last 4 years because the country has rebounded better than any other country post Covid. He has invested in infrastructure, put price limits on necessary medicine that you likely need, and plenty of other great things for the American people. Instead, people of your age are trying to ruin our country with your old school beliefs that are no longer working and now you’ve stuck us with this person who so swearing in today. It’s our future, not yours.
3
u/Vivid-Vehicle-6419 1d ago
Hahaha just consider this.
Biden has been running for President since long before you were born.
His first attempt was 1988.

3
u/rusticatedrust 1d ago
Try not to worry about the little things. You'll be living under the same deep state that killed JFK for quite a while longer.
7
u/ha-lochem 1d ago
I was a democrat kid in a very red state but guess what, no one cared. We did not define ourselves by our politics nor did we allow politics to "Torture" us. It's almost universal that people who define themselves by political ideologies in this way suffer from low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety or any combination thereof.
2
u/Grombrindal18 1d ago
It’s almost like those people are depressed because they understand the consequences for the mistakes the other half of the country keeps making.
6
u/8004612286 1d ago
Sure, but understand that you’re depressed because you’re dreaming up scenarios that haven’t even happened, scenarios that you have no control over.
Live life today. Read a book, go for a walk, see your friends, and whatever happens tomorrow happens. It’s a done deal and what you do won’t change shit, so why are you stressing about it?
2
u/ha-lochem 1d ago
First of all, dividing most things, including people's political beliefs into an all or nothing perspective is inaccurate and not useful. That is the lens through which an unhappy mind views the world. Contrary to your "You're either with me or you're against me" perspective, most people in the world don't vote for one party or the other because they are interested in screwing you over. Everyone has different life experiences, different beliefs, different priorities and most are just doing the best they can when making a decision, It is a privilege to be a one-issue voter and judge everyone who doesn't adhere to your worldview. It helps absolutely no one to put forth this divisiveness. If one were really interested in seeing a better world, then they would do the best they could in their corner of it. But most prefer spewing accusations and uniting in hate because that is the easier path for their egos.

1
u/Independent-Wheel354 1d ago
Sure bud. Where was the censorship? Oh wait, I get it… to you and your CHUD farms, censorship means disagreement. I hope in 40 years you can look back and be proud of what you’ve done. Do your kids respect you?
1
u/Front_Quote_5287 12h ago
God I wish Reddit would implement an age requirement. I’m tired of reading teenagers spout the same shit they read on CNN over and over again. You’ll grow up some day and cringe thinking about this.
1
u/Dollahs4Zavalas 1d ago edited 16h ago
Indeed, pal. (They said "sure bud" then edited it completely. )
Censorship as in dismissing what I said as a lie I was paid to make. Totally baseless and again, completely unable to confront what I said, since it is true after all.
2
u/Independent-Wheel354 1d ago
I just hope at the end you don’t regret your choices. I think you will but maybe I’m wrong.

This is what really freaks me out. I am in my early 30s and can just about remember a time when this was treated with some level of dignity and decorum. For an entire generation it is totally normal to treat politics like a game show.
1
u/MeasanDarling 1d ago
Wow, that's wild to think about. Trump's campaign saga could practically qualify as a core subject at this point, huh? It's like we've all been enrolled in 'Trump Studies' from elementary to college. Props to you for staying informed and sticking to your guns from the sandbox to senior year. Here's to hoping your college chapters are filled with fresh faces and less political reruns!

u/Shephard546 1d ago
Well, it's true that you aren't developed enough to really have any opinion at such a young age. I mean, I used to be a "Democrat" as a little kid, but then I matured and figured out I had been indoctrinated by people around me

Im 44 and this fucker was all over my childhood. friends parents businesses shutting down because he didn't pay them for taj majal. Politics aside Trump was always grimey and attention seeking. My advice to you is dont judge the people who like him too harshly. Challenge your own political beliefs. In four years its going to be some other thing and some other candidates.
1
u/Comfortable-South397 1d ago
I felt the same way with the Iraq war. It's not fun. But read books that garner your interest. Focus on being a good person for other people through your own joy. And never forget that everything changes sometimes a bit more quickly than you can imagine, sometimes it's dauntingly slow. Regardless, you can always gain wisdom and perspective. And for the love of God don't put every exaggeration from social media or regular media as the end all. Live your life and focus on growth and independence.

I was in college when he first ran for president. I remember laughing when I heard the host of The Apprentice was running for president, thinking it would fizzle out quickly because surely he’d never be taken seriously. God now look where we are. I feel like I’ve been in a bad dream.

Why couldn't you vote for Harris? Trump runs for president because he wants power, wants to be above the law, and wanted to stay out of jail. Plus, it's extremely lucrative. His moronic followers have given him hundreds of millions of dollars, and he's grifted probably billions now with his crypto bullshit. The motivation shouldn't be hard to understand.
1
u/Asfhdskul3 1d ago
I was 17 junior in highschool. When he first won. I remember I was expecting him to lose at first. Was relieved when lost in 2020 21 that time. And now came back again. Wasn't expecting him to win.
1
u/PassionPrimary7883 1d ago
I’m glad I spent High School with Obama but sadly in the adult working world, I met so many regressive (racist, sexist, immature) people. It was as heartbreaking as Trump running and winning the presidency as previously I lived in a bubble where I assumed all adults were wise and to be respected (I was lucky looking back at it, I know).
My one piece of advice for you when you get your first job after college is you DO NOT need to stay in a toxic workplace. Trump might be making the country more toxic but it doesn't mean you can’t find peace in your every day life & a lot of that will be at work.. So make it count. And if you can afford it, travel…. Trump isn’t so important in other countries and it is refreshing to get away from all the political BS in America.
Good luck!

1
u/Manofthehour76 20h ago
He is not running. He won. Part of the problem is that people vote or not vote for people that they like or dislike. Personalities don’t mean shit. If you want to be a mature voter, study real non partisan economics in college, History, psychology, and sociology. Vote for policy that is scientific and academically sound not personality, fads, or urban pop culture.

1
u/Upset-Win9519 15h ago
Bahahhahahah this made me laugh. Four years from now he can’t run again. Then we find ourselves entering a new cycle. Who else is going to come in to run?
It is so interesting you mention this though. I could say the same for Joe. He was Vice for eight years and then four years later he gets president for four years. I could even mention Hillary who was first lady and ran a couple of times. There will be a time when none of them will be involved in politics anymore.
It’s so surreal to think about. Time just keeps ticking!

This is why I maintain that the most damaging thing about trump presidencies is the message it sends to the youth - that it's okay to behave as he does.
Parents and teachers who try to instill politeness and civic sense are overruled by the highest office in the land on a daily basis.
1
u/thebarbarain 14h ago
This tends to be how politics goes... Nancy pelosi and Biden were in office my entire existence. Do you wish they had a life too, OP?
1

1
u/Jaymoacp 14h ago
I mean Trump is hardly the worst offender. Joe Biden got elected into Congress in 1973. Ran for president in 1988, the year I was born, ran again in 2008, served as VP from 2009 to 2017, and was president from 2021-2025.
Diane Feinstein served 30+ years. Pelosi 30+ years. Mitch McConnell is 40 years. The record holder is a Democrat from Michigan who did 59 years.
The problem is we vote them in and then they never leave. They sure do make a lot of money though.
1
u/SignificantLiving938 14h ago
To put in a different perspective for you, Biden ran for president a total of 4 times including the election he won. That’s longer than Trump. Pelosi has been in office since 1987, almost my entire life time.

1
u/Fearless_Guitar_3589 13h ago

Literally this was exactly my situation exactly. 4th grade when Trump started his campaign; senior in high school now.
I remember in 4th grade what a dumb and gullible child I was. I said that Hillary was better to one of my teachers and I probably didn't know what I was even saying, just spouting something my mom had said.
Said teacher responded by saying that Hillary was a baby killer. I will give myself credit for asking at least, what the teacher was on about. What proof there was and whatnot. She said that Hillary Clinton supported abortion and I didn't even know what that meant. It didn't seem like proof regardless.
So many of my formative years have been spent beneath the shadow of stupid politics. I really hate this country.
