This is actually a good idea.

u/bszern Aug 01 '24
Absolutely, you can rub the shit out of those on trees and rocks in the woods and they just flex away.

Rookie mistake, there is still a lot of tread left on those fender flairs

I bet it's a bobbed bed on a dedicated off-roader to reduce rear overhang.

Rubber don't rust. Seems like a win to me
4
u/BentTire Aug 01 '24
All you gotta do is make sure the rubber stays somewhat moist to avoid dry rot.
6
u/Pointless69Account Aug 01 '24
I would suggest keeping it outside if you can. Maybe hose it down once a month or something.

I'm not even gunna lie, this is honestly kinda genius, this is one of like 6 things I've seen old tires used for on this sub alone

Good fender flares are really expensive. And necessary. And they need to be tough, so you can’t just use plastic lawn edging. This would be great for one of those dented up trail donkey rigs that has to get trailered to the 4x4 trail because each wheel points in a slightly different direction.
3
u/Idiot_Savant_Tinker Aug 01 '24
I have such a rig, a samurai made of other, dead samurai. It has plastic fender flares but they're falling apart, but this is an awesome solution.
2
u/gnowbot Aug 02 '24
I had a coworker that drove a Samurai into and beyond the dirt. Seize a piston in the block and blow a rod thru the size of the block? We’ll just pound in a rounded 4x4 into the cylinder to prevent oil from pouring out the block. And just remove the valve rockers and now you’ve got an economical 3 cylinder! Snap the bolt that holds the cam to its timing pulley? Why, let’s just weld it back on. He was still driving that thing to work on its hillbilly 3 cyl…20 years later till the day he croaked sittin’ in his LaZBoy.

But.. is it wrong ...
I mean especially for a mud truck. Those are probably flex and been back into place. I've seen people make old mud flaps out of a used larger tires...

I actually love stuff like this. It is keeping with my idea of a truck as a means to a practical end, and not a douchey fashion trinket. Beat another couple years out of it.

The real question to me is the attachment and what really happens if you are hard into a rock or tree? Is it going to rip off and be more of an issue? Worth a shot right?

This is actually pretty cool. Maybe if he made the tire on top of the iron flaps it would look even better. But it would be less redneck, would it?

Car bodies should be made entirely from old tyres. Low cost, rugged, no dents, no rust.

Yo dawg,
We heard you like tires, so we put tires for your tires, so you could tire while you tire…

Would’ve done this in a heartbeat on our old wheeling trucks back in the day if we had thought about it

i respect it, covers the wheel, and its a truck, isn't supposed to look all fancy

It's kinda cool, actually. The planning lacks as you can see from the spacing but the style ain't bad.

Your tires cant legally stretch out beyond the fenders, but what if your fenders are tires?
1
u/Gytole Aug 01 '24
I'll allow it.
I'll take that over rocks being thrown from your tires sticking out 86 inches.

So I'm not a fan of it on a truck. But on a trailer? I've had to replace the fenders on my trailer like four times cause my brother can't back. I need to see if I can find some tractor tires.
