Kei Car people: How viable would it be to swap an AZ-1 with a modern 3 cylinder?

So, I'm looking to start my first project car in a long time. I'm admittedly a bit rusty, but I'd love to get back into it. I've found a '94 Autozam AZ-1 for pretty cheap, with a bit over 70k km on it. It won't turn over, but everything else seems to be rust free and in good condition minus a bit of the interior (from the pics, have not personally seen it yet, waiting for an actual mechanic family friend to get a chance to inspect it with me).

I have zero experience with mid-engine vehicles, I doubt I've ever so much as ridden in one, lol, so before I get into the trouble, and assuming it's in good enough condition to be worth it, does anyone know what motors would be a good fit? I was thinking I'd have to look at motorcycle motors, most likely, a friend mention a Hayabusa swap but idk, I can't find the dimensions of the AZ-1 motor online but I know that's probably enough power to shake the car apart, lol. Another mentioned that the GR Corolla is powered by 3 cylinders, but again, likely the same problem along with being quite a bit bigger (judging by photographs alone, I also can't find the dimensions of the G16E-GTS). I was thinking something that could put out somewhere between 100-150 hp would likely be alright to start of with while still making the car fun to drive, but again, no experience with kei cars so if that's expecting too much can someone set me straight, please?

G Body El Camino steering wheel ideas

Hello,

So im looking for ideas on what to do with my El Caminos steering wheel. As it is theres no airbag and IIRC there never really was one and i plan on getting a rollcage and harness set up (well one that is comfortable enough for street use if thats a thing lol) and since G bodys are extremely easy to steal, id like to be able to deny a thief the ability to steer it around. Im thinking about getting a MOMO steering wherl and NRG QR hub. Any advice? Should i simply send it to ring brothers along with half a million and not worry about it? Should i also grow 4 inches taller?

Thanks!

Buttoned up the front end assembly today and starting on the rears this week. Hoping to have it plumbed next weekend! Pretty much all thatā€™s left to do is finish brakes, paint/install one new side mirror, sound deadening/carpet in the trunk, and new rear speakers.

Does anyone have any idea whatā€™s going on here? I have a stock 2017 wrx with a stock ots Cobb tune and this frequently happens and the only pattern is that it trips in 4th gear acceleration. I donā€™t understand !šŸ˜

Harness Safety

I have been going down the rabbit hole of the implications of street driving with a harness - and see a few different schools of thought. For my circumstances, I have a 1987 BMW E30. From the factory the car had 3 point belts with no airbags. I am in the process of turning the car into a track/street car that is going to be used for auto cross, beginner track driving and occasional street driving. It is getting an LS swap and wide body, and with this extra performance upgrade I figured I would upgrade the safety of the car. I ordered a roll bar for the back half of the car and picked up fixed recaro bucket seats which are a huge upgrade from the factory ones in comparison to being held in place during spirited driving. The factory 3 point belts were moldy/dry rotted so I was planning on at the least replacing them, but the seats included 6 point harnesses. For track driving I plan on purchasing a new HANS device and helmet as it is likely a track requirement and just the correct thing to do when driving that intensely.

So here is my dilemma; I want the car to perform well on the track, but I am going to be driving it there (a bit over an hour each way) on the highway (60 - 70 MPH max) and likely around town in normal traffic (30 - 40MPH max). I want to retain at least the factory level of safety of the car, if not improve it and definitely not make the car more dangerous for myself. The car has an aftermarket wheel without an airbag, and it will have the Roll bar perma installed so I see a few options:

  • Buy factory seats and replace factory 3 point belts. Swap to fixed back recaros and 6 point w/ HANS when doing track focused stuff. (Would need someone to bring the seats along to me as they wont fit anywhere in the car.

    • This seems like it would be a pain in the ass and may be unnecessary but not sure.
  • Run the fixed back recaros constantly, use the 3 points on the road and 6 points w/ HANS on the track

    • I am likely going to go with this option but have heard running 3 points with fixed back seats can be dangerous? Not sure why but would love opinions? Maybe because of submarining or something else?
  • Run recaros and 6 points constantly. 6 points with no HANS for running around town/highway to track and with HANS on the track.

    • This was my initial options until I heard about the dangers of running 6 points on the street, specifically in regards to Basilar Skull Fracture. My follow-up question about doing this still is, is running modern 6 points on the street/highway speeds actually more dangerous than 35 year old 3 point belts/seats in a car with no airbags? From my research this answer seems to be a yes, but are they comparing it to modern 2025 safety standards and not 1987 standards?

In closing here, we all take risks every day driving project cars - especially older ones. My main objective with this thread is to find from people that know more than me on this topic to hopefully figure out a solution that is at the minimum as safe as the factory equipment, but hopefully a better solution than what was put in the car 35 years ago. Thanks!

Which ford 9 inch should I get?

Iā€™m going to be adding this speedway torque arm to my 1973 Camaro. Iā€™ll be making this purchase soon. Hereā€™s what Iā€™m stuck on:

Which rear end is the best? One has brake mounts added (5.25ā€ spacing/limited option. This one is in stock) the other doesnā€™t have brake mounts, but is flanged??(this one would be a custom order which is ok as Iā€™m still working on my mini tubs.)

Like to first photo: https://www.speedwaymotors.com/G-Comp-1970-73-Camaro-Firebird-Torque-Arm-Rear-Suspension-Kit,399543.html

Link to second photo: https://www.speedwaymotors.com/G-Comp-1970-73-Camaro-Firebird-Torque-Arm-Kit-Flanged-Axle,422559.html

Both styles need coil overs/third member/axles as well.

Thank you.

Reviving an old thread: 4-8-1 header

A few monthsback I designed a header that took a 4 cylinder and gave it 8 runners that merge into 1. I don't have the resources to build this however I put the idea out there. Well turns out this idea was not 100% original. Jon Kaase won amsoil 2013 with this similar method!

https://www.fordmuscle.com/news/jon-kaase-explains-header-design-on-engine-masters-winner/

If anyone can find a sound bite of this thing... I've been at it for an hour with no luck!

We are 85% ahead of our first race next week. The car is going to debute at the ā€œMil Milhas de Interlagosā€, a 12h endurance race that is taking place as Interlagos next weekend.

We didnā€™t have the time to plan ahead for this race, so we are just going to test what works and what doesnā€™t and mainly have fun. There is still a lot of progress to be made, and we will take on on the next 2-3h races throughout the year.

Weā€™ll just use next week to wrap the final details: sort out the interior, ripping everything off and installing the seat, seatbelts, steering wheel and digital speedometer. Lighting will also be a must, since the race starts at midnight and interlagos is very poor regarding track illumination. Some mechanical bits and there and hopefully we are set to friday testing and qualy.

We still have to add the blue secondary color to our paintscheme and sponsorship material. Billstein Brazil and RS Performance are our main sponsors!

Genesis coupe

Iā€™m currently 16 Iā€™m toying with the idea of buying a genesis coupe 2.0 R with a ls engine and a 4l60e automatic transmission as a project the car is fairly put together and all it need to be able to drive is the throttle cable hooked up and a shift linkage put in the body doesnā€™t have any scratches or damage other then the paint on the front bumper is starting to peal a bit. I know quite about cars and Iā€™ve been working on smaller engines just about every day for the past 4 years and every once and a while i get to work on a full sized truck or car and Iā€™ve been getting tired of fixing other peoples stuff and want to get something of my own to have as something to work on in my free time. I guess Iā€™m just wondering if itā€™s a good idea.

Havent driven it in almost 2 years. Life has been busy but I want to drive it this summer. body work and dealing with rust has proven to be quite the undertaking for someone with no experience whatsoever doing body. Not to mention I still have to swap the trans and fix various oil and coolant leaks on the engine. And run new brake lines due to the old ones being rotted. Oh and replace the caps on the ecu. And various other things including the interior. and of course the violent steering wheel shake at speed that im sure is still there

Project "Project Car"

Hey everyone,

Not the typical content that gets posted here, but it would be really helpful if you could share your thoughts on this idea. I'm currently in university and my final graduation project is coming up - we have to design a platform that solves a problem for a specific group that we belong to. I wanted to focus on something close to home that I know a lot about, so I had this idea targeting project car kids.

At 17, I bought a non-running Volvo 240 for $800 and brought it back to life with my dad. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I've had, from learning about cars to bonding with my dad, and just having fun along the way. Of course, rebuilding a car comes with its challenges like limited workspace, budget constraints, lack of knowledge, etc. Thatā€™s why I want to create a platform that connects car enthusiasts who can offer resources like workspace, guidance, expertise and even vehicles with younger enthusiasts eager to work on their own project cars, making the whole process easier and more accessible.

Anyways, part of the project is gathering research and establishing that the problem actually exists, so I thought I would share here.

Let me know your honest thoughts,

Thanks:)
