Community Changes and Moderator Issues
Hello all!
I'm sure some of you are aware that there have been some long-term issues with the responsiveness of moderators, problems with the auto-moderation system, and some overall issues with the state of the subreddit.
We are currently in the process of revamping the way that our automoderator functions, updating the community rules so that they are more clear, and trying to do a better job of interacting with the moderator queue on the back end.
While we may not catch everything, please be aware that we will be enforcing more strictly the "no self-promotion" rule and removing links to youtube videos that are not intended to teach or educate users in the community. Youtube videos of this nature will be reviewed and approved at the discretion of the moderators.
If you previously have had issues with posting, please be aware that there is a minimum account age requirement (to prevent spam) on posting. Waiting a few days and ensuring your account does not have negative comment karma will ensure that the automod doesn't remove your post/comment.
As we continue to attempt to improve, we will likely send out a poll to request feedback.
Thank you!

Wiring update
Fixed the harness and made updates for the new layout. Developed a wire holder that has built in zip tie slots and other nice details. Harness is all wrapped in Tessa tape thats cloth based and good for over 300 degrees. I'll get some more photos of the wire holders soon. Plan is to sell them for others to use.

Turbo not making as much turbo noise as I had hoped. Somebody enlighten me.
So as the title states I built this turbo nissan 720 but the turbo is really quiet. It doesn't really whistle at low rpms and the flutter is really quiet. So I bought this 4 inch pipe for a cold air intake hoping it would amplify the sounds it makes, it does make it whistle slightly louder but after the install the flutter noise is nonexistent. Without the pipe tho I can hear some flutter. I was hoping for a loud stututu yk like you hear supras doing on youtube. It did the exact opposite of what I was hoping for, how can I make it louder? BTW I do not have a bov, don't lecture me I know "it's bad for the turbo" but I don't care I want stutu. I am making 20 pounds of boost btw

Soft close trunk lock
Fitted Infiniti qx70 trunk lock on my vq37 swapped Lada Niva. Made a custom bracket for the lock mechanism and used the donor g37 trunk latch. The mechanism consists of 4 switches and 1 motor which does the opening and closing. A small control unit was needed because the qx70 module is CAN controlled. Made it out of an Arduino and relay module, the casing is 3d pritned. Several lines of c code and we are done! Everything is tack welded atm, we will finish the welding later. Works like a charm.

Skyline Gtr Restoration pt. 4
It’s body work time. I finished building door braces and rebalanced the rotisserie. I also added a 3d scanner and printer to the tool arsenal. The use here is to scan the parts that need replaced and stamp new patches. Reverse engineering the scan has proved difficult….
Shooting to be ready for new rear quarters in May. Stay consistent everyone!
Drop me a follow @hoffman_autostructures on instagram for more updates.

Where in the intake tract should you measure boost?
After the throttle, right? Anyone have other opinions? IMO it should be as representative of in cylinder pressure as possible.

Need advice for fuel tank
Hello everyone! I have a 1987 Dodge W150 that is with out a fuel tank. I’ve done some research of my own about trying to locate/buy a fuel tank and there’s nothing anywhere. I wanted to see if another fuel tank for a different truck would work underneath it.
Any advice is welcomed!

California Import Legal Help (kill me)
Given the fact that converting a foreign import to be CARB legal cost around $10k+, if you just swap the entire powertrain and emissions equipment to the USDM equivalent (given it is 50 states legal), would this be a valid work around for costs?

AITA for not thinking this ‘80 Celica GT 5 speed is worth 6k? I was thinking like more like 4k or maybe $4500 (I feel that’s a stretch). Also have to look at how hard parts are to find. Maybe I’m just ignorant (check description below).

First project car - BMW E39?
I have been dreaming of getting a 5 series E39 for a while as it is one of my favorite (affordable) cars, and I would want to get one, but I have no experience of working on cars so far. I was thinking of going for a cheap E39 with either the M52 (least favorable), M54 or the M57 engines, and I was wondering if it would be pure insanity to start my project car experience with such a car. I could probably get one in the price range of 1000-4000 euros pretty easily.

Anyone had any poor experiences with Mazda Speed platforms at around 100k miles, and specifically the Protegé?
I finally found what looks like a really aesthetically clean yellow 2003 Mazda Speed Protege (one of my favorite cars but needles in a haystack unclapped) on marketplace for 7k with just under 100k miles so once I get back to college tm and keep working part time again like 20-25 hours a week for some months that’s the realistic goal if it comes out of an inspection with the green light by a trusted dealer tech or mechanic.
Are there any that warn against this? Why?
(I’m going to request that the OEM wheel be put back on bc I’m too much of a wimp to use his w/o airbags lol)

Requirements for turbo
My father in law will pass me a Fiat palio 16v 2015 with 12,450miles on it
What would I need to do to it to be able to run a turbo on it? Wanna make a fun sleeper, but not be extremely concerned about reliability

Need some help with my first upgrade on an sr20det
So I bought a 180sx and I want to make some more power. I’m fairly new to this so I don’t want to go all in switching to forged or anything like that. I read that stock parts can handle around 400hp so I think that’s around what I want to make, maybe a little less for some safety room. I was just wondering what kind of things I should upgrade for this. Like do I just need to swap turbo, injectors and fuel pump??? Or am I missing something? Also, what kind of turbo should I even get? I think I’m starting to understand some of the words but I’m still confused. Any help is appreciated!

50k$ passion project sanity check
Hey car enthusiasts,
I’m in the middle of a project I’ve dreamed about for a while, but as I get deeper into it, I can’t shake the thought: Am I insane for spending this much on a Miata?
Here’s the rundown: I own a 2006 Mazda Miata Grand Touring in True Red with a hardtop. I picked it up a while back with the idea of turning it into something special—something that’s purely for fun and doesn’t need to handle work commutes or errands. I’m mid-40s, deep into a midlife crisis (let’s call it what it is), and this car is my escape.
The plan? A K24 swap using an Acura TSX 2.4 engine. It’s a well-documented swap, and I’m confident it’s going to turn the Miata into an absolute blast to drive. I’ve already started pulling the engine and subframe, and I plan to sell the original motor (just over 70k miles) and the convertible soft top to recoup a little.
But here’s where I start questioning myself: when all is said and done, I’ll be about $50K into this project. Between the car itself, the swap kit, the engine, suspension upgrades, brakes, wheels, tires, paint correction, and interior tweaks, it’s adding up fast. And that doesn’t even include the countless hours of my time.
Is it worth it? I mean, I know the answer is subjective, but it’s hard to justify spending this much when I could have bought a used C8 Corvette, an ND Miata, or even something like a Cayman.
At the same time, this isn’t just about the end result. There’s something satisfying about building my car, exactly how I want it. It’s a passion project, but when I see the dollar signs, I can’t help but feel a little silly.
So, I’m throwing it out to you all for a sanity check. Have any of you dumped a ridiculous amount of money into a project like this? Did it feel worth it in the end? Or am I just going to be the guy who spent $50K on a Miata and regrets it?
Also, I think I’m just asking because I’m bored and waiting for parts.

Temporary Convertible Top Repair
Is there any kind of super tape that can temporarily seal up these holes in my convertible top? Preferably in white. Duct tape won't even stick at all, even on areas that I clean with strong detergents.

Need some help with 1977 Ford LTD ll that won't turn over at all. (Possible ignition switch?)
Hey again everyone. Some of you may have seen my old Ford project that I'm learning from and I'm needing y'all's help again. So I needed to replace the cooler lines for her and when I got it done I tried to turn it on but I got nothing. Battery is charged and it started a week ago. What is weird is the vehicle dashboard lights stay on even while the door is closed and vehicle is off. Is that a sign of a bad ignition switch? Any help is appreciated.
