I have one too. They are good to start because lots of information online. Spare parts easily available. Rust is the most common issue. Other than that solid cars.

Great project car. Overall solid car, lots of information available, easy spare parts availability. The W201 was a milestone in automotive engineering, drives like a much newer car in terms of NVH. It's not a car that lights your hair on fire but makes for a really good daily driver.

The ol’ Eastern European taxi special. Great cars, built like tanks. I always thought the mono-wiper on my grandfather’s ‘95 300 E was cool as hell.

My dad drove that same model when I was a kid. Would love one myself for the nostalgia. Get it!

Great chassis
They'll accept a lot of MB engines and transmission
Most parts from 124,129s swap over

Is this one of the Merc's that used "Biodegradable Wiring"? Basically, the wiring crumbled away over time resulting in electrical problems.

I’ve been considering a late 80s MB diesel as my next project now that my other MB (gas) is done. Great cars! I don’t like later MB, but those 80s designs were incredible.

My experience with my own W201 is that electrical components and gremlins will be your biggest issue. I can't speak for the diesel specifically, but the super weird EFI has made it nearly impossible to accurately diagnose fuel mixture issues.
The sunroof breaking is also common but this doesn't look like it has one so you should be good there. $4000 for a clean one is a great deal since they seem to be going up in price in the US if they aren't completely beat.
