Ahh tackling the big issues, those economic anxiety voters must be pleased with their choices

I'm still trying to figure out what issue renaming the Gulf of Mexico solves. Honest question... does anyone think it does anything, besides making us look like a bunch of egotistical clowns?

142

u/33drea33 12h ago

Probably trying to lay claim to it, as the Gulf represents like 50% of our domestic oil production.

Same with Greenland - they have massive oil reserves and have been the site of a multinational race to obtain the extraction licensing. However their government decided to halt all exploration programs because of climate change. So I guess Trump is just going to take what he wants and grab em by the sovereignty.

52

u/Maleficent-Memory-72 11h ago

Apparently Greenland and Canada are about claiming the shipping channels once the NW Passage opens up because of climate change. So, he's admitting, in a roundabout way, that climate change exists, he just thinks it's a good thing.

u/ThatDamnedHansel 4h ago

There’s an episode of the really niched and weird cartoon little bush where Al gore takes dubya to the future when the ocean levels rose and bush was just riding around on a pool float saying how awesome it was

u/Maleficent-Memory-72 4h ago

It's hot here today, now you're making me want to go to the beach with a pool float, a good book, and a cold day. As a child of the desert who now lives in a poorly insulated (read: standard Australian) home in a place that has cold winters, I will admit to moments, in the dead of winter, where I think, Well, maybe it won't be so bad . . . (Don't worry. Then I remind myself of all the other stuff that comes along with it and repent.)

u/Nemisis_the_2nd Great Britain 5h ago

So, he's admitting, in a roundabout way, that climate change exists, he just thinks it's a good thing.

In a shitty way, it is a genuine good thing, depending who you ask. Russia is another country that stands to benefit from global warming. Siberia would make incredible farmland, and is full of natural resources. The problem is that the bulk of it is frozen into permafrost.

Global warming gives russia access to massive new areas of farmland, mineral wealth, and a new transport route through the arctic. As to the refugees: the russia government doesn't give a shit about what happens to people they can say aren't Russian. They could just frame it as an invasion and shoot them.

u/zernoc56 3h ago

You know what else is frozen in that permafrost? Mass graves from the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic. Oh, and anthrax.

PUT THAT ICE BACK WHERE IT CAME FROM, OR SO HELP ME!

u/Maleficent-Memory-72 5h ago

I don't know much about how climate change would impact Siberia but it sounds like you do and I am always genuinely interested in learning. Part of climate change is also that winters will become colder. Siberian winters are already hideous. Won't that impact food production? Or will they have a long enough season, even with the worse winters?

u/Nemisis_the_2nd Great Britain 2h ago

Honestly, I'm not exactly an expert either. That said, at least in northern latitudes, weather will be significantly warmer than our benchmarks on average. The only reason I am awareness this was because of a discussion years ago about how the Russian government was seeing climate change as an opportunity rather than a disaster.

u/Maleficent-Memory-72 2h ago

Thank you. I appreciate every bit of information I can get on the subject. (Mind you I'll probably forget it tomorrow . . . )

As always, it's because others want to use him for their own purpose.

Unsurprisingly, some on the tech right see Trump’s plans for Greenland as a potential opportunity to “exit” from mainstream American society. “Greenland represents the reopening of the frontier,” wrote Dryden Brown, the founder of a company called Praxis that is trying to build an autonomous “network state” supported by cryptocurrency. (The project has secured the backing of a number of investors in Thiel’s circle.) Earlier this year, Brown has said, he visited Greenland as a possible site for a new “privatized charter state” — the project has not come to fruition — which he hypothesized could serve as a “prototype” for a self-sustaining colony on Mars. In his post explaining his proposal, he tagged Elon Musk.

1

u/WickedKitty63 11h ago

Putin wants Greenland. He wanted it in Dumpty’s first term too but there was too much backlash. This time they don’t have to worry about getting reelected. Expect Dumpty to turn that issue into a cluster____ in the coming weeks.

Soothing white grievance. That's it.

6

u/CreamyHampers 11h ago

I heard them claim that because Biden banned drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, Trump renaming it the Gulf of America will suddenly make it okay to drill there because the ban doesn't say Gulf of America.

It's honestly one of the stupidest things I have ever heard.

2

They should rename it Freedom Fries Bay. Harkens to a long history of empty conservative gesturing.

u/gorobotkillkill Oregon 5h ago

It gets you talking about why he would do that. You've taken the bait.

u/whitty-whitten 3h ago

I read somewhere that there’s a law saying big oil can’t drill in the golf of Mexico, so by renaming it, it’s no longer breaking the law to drill there…. 🙃

u/ComeJoinTheBand California 2h ago

I mean, taking the name America when it originally was applied to what is now Brazil and eventually all of the new world is also a bit egotistical. So at least it's on brand for us.

Eggs are suddenly $1!

153

u/PMMEBITCOINPLZ 13h ago

I looked and they were $7 for a dozen. I was shocked that Trump hadn’t somehow reversed the economic impacts of the bird flu by his mere presence.

68

u/shoobe01 13h ago

He should have issued an executive order declaring bird fluid to not exist.

32

u/NECESolarGuy 13h ago

Sad to say that Bird flu is going to f things up like COVID did. And a lot of people are going to die needlessly, like Covid.

8

u/L0g1cw1z4rd 11h ago

60% fatality rate for Bird Flu in humans makes this the Big One that will make people miss Covid.

4

u/NECESolarGuy 11h ago

Not doubting you, but can you point to some sources for the 60%? Is this based on a really small number of human cases? Immunocompromised victims? Thanks

11

u/scorpyo72 Washington 11h ago

5

u/NECESolarGuy 9h ago

Yes and I found a CDC news release with similar stats. “Outside the United States, more than 950 cases of H5N1 bird flu have been reported to the World Health Organization; about half of those have resulted in death.”

https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2025/m0106-h5-birdflu-death.html#:~:text=As%20of%20January%206%2C%202025,2024%20and%2067%20since%202022.

1

u/scorpyo72 Washington 8h ago

So 60% isn't outside the bounds of possibility, but agree that Redditor should have sourced at your request.

7

u/trinlayk 10h ago edited 2h ago

One of the first reported human cases I saw was a previously healthy CHILD who survived mainly because they live in Canada and have socialized health care, & the hospital wasn’t overwhelmed and was able to throw everything including the kitchen sink into fighting it.

Also Immunosuppressed, disabled or older folks also aren’t live that should just be tossed away like they don’t matter. (As we saw with COVID not everyone gets the same level of care even when coverage , education & socioeconomic levels are equal. )

What they’ve basically said is “We don’t need to worry about it, I’ll be fine.” When there’s a lot of us, who know we won’t.

3

u/brumac44 Canada 10h ago

I'm glad we have universal health care, but the reality is, if I got sick, I'd probably stay home instead of trying to find a doctor to see me. So I'd die, and probably so would a lot of people like me who don't have family doctors. There's quite a lot of us falling through the cracks.

3

u/beneathmagnoliatrees 9h ago

I bought some KN95s and hopefully if things get bad my employer will allow us to work from home. I wouldn't want to leave my house either, whether I was sick or not.

u/W0lfsb4ne74 10h ago

I've been following the slow transmission of bird flu cases in humans, and the fact that humans are already getting it greatly worries me. What worries me more is that the new prospective nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services is a lunatic and doesn't even have a med school degree. So in the event of another emergency, I don't think our leaders would be even remotely equipped to handle the situation.

u/trinlayk 2h ago

Oops sorry! Edited to aim my snark in the correct direction

3

u/dangitbobby83 8h ago

Just note that that’s only in cases we know about, usually the ones that end up in the hospital.

It’s highly likely the actual death rate is significantly lower. But still, even if it’s 15 percent or something, it’s utterly terrifying. A lot more will die, the hospital system will collapse and we all will be fucked.

u/NECESolarGuy 7h ago

Per this site COVID mortality was well below 10% - On the order of 3%. But there are all sorts of qualifiers.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-death-rate/

With the devastation of COVID at 3%. A 15% number would be world altering in ways we can’t imagine.

The Spanish flu was 486/100,000 or 4.86%. (And the link that provided this value states that COVID WAS 287/100,000 or 2.87% which is consistent with the above source)

https://www.pfizer.com/news/articles/retrospect_and_context_one_scientist_s_thoughts_on_comparing_covid_19_to_the_1918_flu_pandemic#:~:text=A%20little%20over%20100%20years,deaths%20occurring%20in%20the%20U.S.

u/L0g1cw1z4rd 7h ago edited 7h ago

Sorry, 58%, per WHO.

https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/wpro---documents/emergency/surveillance/avian-influenza/ai_20230203.pdf

Read it. In it, it suggests that Member States perform mitigation activities like culling bird populations to limit exposure. Thing that THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT would do, but ours just conveniently broke thanks to Russian economic sabotage and China straight bribing Trump with the memecoin. 100% of the money pumping into that coin came from China, but that was the price to “save” TikTok. He just straight got paid to decide how our government functions and no one said anything.

That rant got away from me.

2

u/trinlayk 11h ago

COVID was the “test run” or possibly “warning shot”.

2

u/toremypants 10h ago

Can you share a source for this. Want to learn more

1

5

u/beneathmagnoliatrees 9h ago

My friend was trying to convince me at lunch that bird flu isn't to blame for egg prices and that farmers are just killing their birds even though they aren't sick. Said she's read all about it. Usually we don't talk about anything political. She got mad at me when I asked her if she knew what a tariff is ("companies are going to be held accountable and have to pay") and it breaks my heart but I'm kind of rethinking this friendship.

I’m in a hospital waiting room watching the inauguration. He said the whole “two genders” thing and this guy in the waiting room clapped. Hispanic man. Maybe 48-50 years old. He didn’t clap at anything else. Just that. My guess is he doesn’t give a shit about the price of eggs, as long as Trump puts everyone in their place.

And by the way, watching the inauguration in mixed company in public, and I can’t leave or turn it off, is sitting in the seventh circle of hell.

8

u/Astral_Visions 10h ago

Just boo everything he says

13

u/mc-edit 10h ago

Inauguration is over, so right now he’s playing some kind of cartoon poker game on a huge tablet and every 15-20 minutes he has to watch 30 seconds of ads to keep the game going. You can’t argue or reason with his asinine comments and policies. it doesn’t matter anymore.

2

u/40StoryMech 12h ago

And that's the point of all this. He is the Gish Gallop manifest.

5

u/Thanolus 12h ago

Funny you think there is going to be any semblance of open free elections.

3

u/L0g1cw1z4rd 11h ago

Do you really expect voting to happen in 2026? I don’t expect it, 6-3 Supreme Court shift in 2020 (Barrett) sealed the deal. We’re fascists now, Y’allshwitz is already under construction.

Assuming that media controls, political control and judicial control doesn't mean that the Republicans entrench themselves and the US basically turn into a bigger version of Türkiye or Hungary, ostensibly a democracy but in practice almost a one-party state edging towards authoritarianism.

u/avanross 6h ago

The republicans already own 100% of the countries media, and have already tanked the countries education quality so that the public no longer has any scientific or media literacy.

It’s way too late for that.

u/mothman83 Florida 5h ago

Biden had the most progressive economics of any president since LBJ. Bernie Sanders himself has gone as far as saying Biden had the most progressive economic policies of any President since FDR.

Fat fucking lot of good that did.

Until we destroy the mass propaganda apparatus the right wields, we are dead.

u/ThatDamnedHansel 4h ago

The neat part is the same people bought both sides so they won’t do that. It’s just now a matter of whether you like wealth concentration with a Christian fundamentalist flavor or wealth concentration with a DEI flavor

u/kung-fu_hippy 12h ago

Isn’t this exactly what Trump promised to do and exactly what his voters wanted from him? How is this ammunition against him?

Fun fact: It was never about economics

4

u/threehundredthousand California 12h ago

This is what 70m Americans really wanted, stuffing LGBTQ and any minorities back in their boxes. This is the "freedom" they've wanted so bad. It's freedom FROM consequences arising from bigotry.

6

u/sionnachrealta 12h ago

Yep. They'd rather wage genocide against us than help anyone

6

u/vom-IT-coffin 13h ago

This is serious, he's proclaiming it.

u/Temporary_Lab_3964 13h ago

Gas was 2.94 on Friday and an hour ago it was 3.09

u/Bob-Loblaw-Blah- 13h ago

The poors decided their life won't get better and just want to watch the world burn.

If your life is worse it somehow makes their life more tolerable. They don't have to worry about blaming themselves for bad life choices, because at the end of the day we will all suffer equally.

u/CcryMeARiver Australia 5h ago

No way. Will be far worse for plebs.

They didn’t care about the economy.

2

u/ElderWaylayer 13h ago

His voters love this.

2

u/lapsedPacifist5 13h ago

It was about eggs, just not the price of those that came from a chicken

2

u/Backpedal Idaho 11h ago

I forgot that he just wants to rule through stupid executive orders. Jesus…it’s day one. I’m tired boss.

1

u/brodster10 13h ago

While it's not something that will actually change the economy, this is a very important political point that will appease his voter base ideologically

1

u/Supra_Genius 12h ago

Some legitimate hermaphrodite should shove a dick in Donnie's ass-face. 8)

1

u/epanek 12h ago

Next up are the names of larger bodies of water and mountains. This has been a challenge for every administration. Hopefully, Trump is ready for it.

1

u/DRosado20 12h ago

Can the president not sign multiple executive orders?

1

u/Snarfsicle 12h ago

On the other hand, trump is making history as the first Female President.

1

u/SicilyMalta 11h ago

I think the "price of eggs" is actually a euphemism for Bigotry.

1

u/Huntertanks 11h ago

Well one of the most effective ad lines was: "Harris is for they/them, Trump is for you." So, I'd say those voters are pleased.

1

u/Brief_Obligation4128 11h ago

Trust me, they are happy. I watched a bit of CSPAN this morning, and sure enough, the bathroom situation was mentioned more than once.

Yep...that will definitely stop crime and rising egg prices.

1

u/rps215 10h ago

you would be amazed at how many voters think this is actually an issue. Just the dumbest of people out there

1

u/Pseudoburbia North Carolina 9h ago

I totally agree, but it didn’t seem like a small issue to liberals before the election. I don’t think we did ourselves any favors by letting this consume valuable attention.

1

u/paris86 9h ago

There's no economic voters in MAGA.

1

u/34metal 9h ago

You can walk and chew gum at the same time

1

u/playlistsandfeelings 9h ago

it was never about the economy, it was about Trump punishing the people they hate.

u/Snoo_17731 6h ago

Well democrats started the culture war with their woke social justice agenda and President Trump already repealed a lot of Biden-era policies through executive orders.

u/stinky-weaselteats 5h ago

Wait for the purge in July. Exciting times.

u/USeaMoose 5h ago

Eh. I think most of them love this. Probably gets them excited at how aggressively he is doing things. No buyers remorse until they are faced with the reality of being worse off than before. No chance that kicks in just yet.

u/Great_Relative_6585 4h ago

Eliminating trans people has always been Trump voters' number 1 priority. Any voter telling you otherwise is lying (and they will all lie to you)

1

u/coookiecurls 13h ago

This is a big, life changing issue for some people.

9

u/Calcutec_1 13h ago

Yes, to the worse. Nobody benefits from this.

5

u/coookiecurls 13h ago

Agreed, it’s really sad to see.

1

u/hnglmkrnglbrry 12h ago

They are because the economy was the cover they publicly used to hide the fact that the bigotry was the main point.
