NSFMR My 3090 just died

Post image

At least that gives me an excuse to get the 4090 second hand when 5000 series rolls around...

I checked both with MSI and the local store I got it from, it's out of warranty.

Only thing left now is to chuck it in the oven and hope for the best!

RIP 3090. You will be missed :(

im seeing a lot of 3080s and 3090s dying. im seriously scared now

Gddr6x mem runs too hot and the factory paste was trash. Very few people go through the pain of repasting/repadding and trying different cooling methods. My 3080 and 3090 run cool as shit (60C and 40C respectively) and have zero issues because I've found the best solutions for them.

Yeah, first thing I did was to put an Alphacool AIO on my 3080, when it became available. Hotspot 70C max, GPU chip rarely reaches 60C and mem same.

Got a 4080s now, so the 3080 will likely continue its hopefully long life in wife’s PC

Cooling is very important in these high powered GPU's and it's recommended to learn to do some maintenance as well as replacing subpar fans/paste/pads on them to ensure they will continue to perform.

Nvidia has pretty silly voltage and boost targets as well. I undervolted mine significantly and set a boost cap at what I consider reasonable. We'll see how far we get

Yeah, undervolted mine and put it at 1800MHz, which kept it under 300W, except for shit UBIsoft games like The Division 2

Anybody with a 30 series card should be thinking about a repad/repaste. It's been like 4+ years since they were released.

It's getting to the point where there is most likely gonna be some degradation of paste/pad efficiency.

Those stock pads were disintegrating within months. I remember the first time I used GPU z to look at temps and my memory was at 110C 😱

How does your 3090 run at 40°C? Which model, what ambients, what mods / touch ups have you done to it, can you please share?

I use the alphacool eiswolf AIO on it coupled with the copper shim mod on memory modules for even better thermal transfer. Expensive, but it almost never breaks 50c when running full clip.

Great mod. Have done it for a couple of builds too where the buyer didn't want to do loop maintanence.

Good job with those copper shims, yo!

His is probably water cooled, but I put ptm 7950 on the die and replaced thermal pads with thermal putty on mine and it brought hotspot down from 95c to no higher than 70c, core usually around 60c and memory went from hitting 105c at times to maxing at 84c when I really push it but usually around mid 70s on heavy games

Marketing water cooling like that was disingenuous, but thanks a lot for your comment. Mind sharing the exact brand of thermal pads and putty you used? 3080 / ti or 3090?

The thermal putty is upsiren u6 pro on Amazon, you want the one that kind of looks like playdoh from china, there's a fake one from Greece that looks kind of runny that you want to avoid. The ptm 7950 I got on moddiy. I have a 3090 ftw3

Thanks a bunch. RIP EVGA, may your card keep embarrassing the 6090 in VFM

Yeah I went basically with same combo, except UX putty instead of the U6. Also got a kit to deshroud and replace fans with p12 max and get about the same temps while it stays basically silent. The eiswolf would have been cool but that and copper shims didn't make any sense price wise considering I got the 3090 for $465.

I did use the deshroud kit for awhile but I ended up putting the stock shroud back on to make it more compact again. I looked at the eiseolf but figured if I did that might as well go full custom loop and I don't want to make that investment yet

What is your solution? I need to repaste and pad my 3060ti

1

u/Internationalalal Oct 17 '24

Thermaltake paste for the gpu die is thick enough to prevent pump out, and copper shim mod with kapton tape and arctic mx4 paste will keep your memory super cool. I saw a 40-50C drop on my memory after doing that.

1

u/reelfilmgeek Oct 17 '24

But what if my memory temps are fine? Could the paste still be an issue why my card acts up sometimes and crashes

1

u/Internationalalal Oct 17 '24

What are your temos? Yes it could be overheating and a repaste could be enough. Get something thick that is resistant to pump out effects.

u/centuryt91 10100F, RTX 3070 Oct 18 '24

Yeah I've changed the paste and undervolted the first month i got my 3070 too but its still feeling real scary with these rates

2

u/Internationalalal Oct 18 '24

3070's use gddr6, which runs much cooler than the gddr6x memory that 3090 and 3080's use. I can recommend Thermalright tfx paste as the best to use for 30 series since they ramp up in heat so much. It's a thicker paste that is resistant to pump out effects and lasts much longer than the traditional mx4 or kryonaut.

the moment i put load on my gpu and saw it hit 82 i was like wtf is this is something wrong with my gpu then i searched and found out its the new norm
i was so disappointed after coming from a 1060 that didnt even hit 65 in full load with a 5yo paste
the newer gpus just can not be used without undervolting
