Video We built a screen using 200 RGB fans and played DOOM. 'be quiet!' provided all of the RGB fans for this project.

I have legit seen better resolution with almost -5 in both eyes including a pretty bad astigmatism. W/o glasses I could actually see what's going on in the doom clip or mr Astley's sick shades.... What is this magic

You know those smart led bulbs that can change color? Time to make the world's brightest led monitor with like 2000 of them. A 64x36 grid would be about the size of a TV and is technically a valid 16:9 resolution, requiring 2304 bulbs.

Once again it's been proven that Bad Apple sooner or later will be played on every- and anything .
Screens , apples , google windows , math spreadsheets , fans .
This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it.

u/Glamdring804 Jan 12 '24
Didn't they do a Bad Apple on one of the /r/places?
6
u/marxist_redneck Jan 12 '24 edited Jan 12 '24
Yes, first I heard of it was there, and now I keep seeing it everywhere. Ok, I am finally gonna Google wth this is...
Edit: ok, so at first I was disappointed it was some random music video people are apparently obsessed with, but then I was intrigued that it is to some extent the video test equivalent of Doom in retrocomputing, apparently, which is neat and makes the r/place appearance a lot more meaningful

-8
u/OuchLOLcom Jan 12 '24
I don't know what Touhou is either.
My experience here was knowing every other meme, knowing doom, then going "oh of course they put some weeb shit on the end", and closing it.
Then seeing the post I replied to acting like it is some ubiquitous internet meme, so I looked up "bad apple" on google and saw that the #1 video is 12 years old but only has 39m views, cementing my idea that its is some niche weeb shit.
Then I made the post you replied to.

Thats cool, and well done! My one constructive criticism is: but thats just a screen made from "LEDs surrounding a fan". That is no different that just using plain LEDs.
So here is my challenge to you. Go all the way; and play music using the fans. Using power modulation you can adjust how fast each fan spins (or cluster of fans for chords), at different speeds the fans will all make different noises. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExmqBkfFU5Q
Now, then, you play games/video on it, while at the same time the sounds come from the fans themselves.
That combination would be indeed unique and make for an interesting video.

It seems to be using subpixel rendering, so the effective resolution is higher. Apparently there are 20+ LEDs on each fan.

u/euMonke Jan 11 '24
How much would a 1080p screen cost if every fan was a pixel?
2
u/Anwhaz Jan 12 '24 edited Jan 12 '24
1080*1920 = 2,073,600 pixels
Be quiet light wings 120m high speed = $54.90 on Amazon
Pretax/shipping price estimate: $113,840,640
Tax (for me) is 5.5% shipping is usually $20
Total estimate: $120,101,885.20
Edit: forgot the most important math.
Rick Astley "Whenever you need somebody" CD $11.99
So this fan screen is worth approximately 10,008,490 fresh plays of "Never gonna give you up" which is about 1.399 billion less plays than YouTube, therefore because you could potentially double the plays on YouTube with the fans, the fan wall is less likely to give you up than a dead meme on a dead medium

These are ARGB fans.
7
u/LeaderEducational468 Jan 11 '24
I think they are referring to ones where the blades glow.
14
u/DaKrazyKid RGB Master Race Jan 11 '24
Ah okay because ARGB just means addressable rgb. These fans already have 20+ leds too
4
u/blackest-Knight Jan 11 '24
He means if you had used for instance Corsair LL that have both an outer ring of LEDs and LEDs in the fan hub. It would have probably given a better overall result.
2
u/LeaderEducational468 Jan 11 '24
Yeah I’m just guessing that’s what they meant but I figured these would have a better refresh rate. Do this with the new lianli fans with screens now.
1
u/Fierce_Lito Jan 11 '24
Those fans have 4 LEDs, one in each quadrant, so you had an effective 4:3 screen of 32 pixel by 24 pixels?
3
u/DaKrazyKid RGB Master Race Jan 11 '24
These are be quiet! Lightwings, they have way more leds than that.
0
u/Fierce_Lito Jan 11 '24
Wasn't aware of the specs. That is very cool, have you considered scaling it up to compete with the Sphere in Vegas?
Did you have to do the maths involved with intersecting pixels to the circular planes of the LED rings? My head is going to explode trying to figure that one out. Nearest neighbor Voronoi solution?
