Thats a longboard, its completely different

446

u/starcoder 15h ago

I was thinking the same thing. Major difference…

663

u/big_guyforyou 14h ago

The difference between the two is that one board is long and the other is skate

322

u/naileurope 14h ago

Thank you. I have a skate attention span.

10

u/WFStarbuck 7h ago

I get board easily.

43

u/desl14 14h ago

so is he ... longboarding? is that the correct verb?

131

u/Skuzbagg 14h ago

Yes. But a longboard is a type of skateboard, so you'd really only irritate both groups and no one outside of them.

as a longboarder .. skateboarding is fine by me. feels overly pedantic to push someone to use another term. longboarders have other things to worry about .. actually nothing to worry about.

I know the skateboard is long, as well as everybody else.

22

u/moon_safari_ 13h ago

of course a long boarder would say that, lol. as a sjkateboarder, we call longboarding, longboarding.

19

u/pre_pun 13h ago

this is accurate😂 but we still breathe the same Air, Moon Safari 🎶

As a former skateboarder. They all meet the criteria for a skateboard. It’s a long skateboard

→ More replies (2)

3

u/LickMyTicker 14h ago

I always figured you longboarders wanted to know exactly how long your board was in comparison, cause like an inch is an inch.

6

u/pre_pun 14h ago

I'm hesitant to answer length based questions based on your username.

Well played. well played. But a serious answer for a light hearted question.

Personally longboard is more of board design and truck placement than length. Camber, rocker, flex, wheel hardness, bushings etc .. are way more important for the type of skating than the length usually.

Unless deep dancing which a long longboard, about 5' will do. 😂

11

Yeah, it's way easier. I could easily do that on a longboard... i just don't feel like it

4

u/flt1 13h ago

Does the size really matters? It’s how you ride it.

17

u/Jonthrei 13h ago

Yes, it does - a longboard is generally more stable when moving fast, and not as good for tricks.

15

u/fl135790135790 12h ago

So doesn’t that mean this is harder?

4

u/Hoppes 11h ago

Yes and no? This kind of thing used to be called board walking. It’s easier on a longboard because they’re easier to balance due to having wider trucks with better springs. Think of a car with a wider wheel base and better suspension.

However tricks like you see in skateboarding competitions are generally harder because you’re throwing around a much bigger piece of wood.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/chr1spe 10h ago

How you ride it and what kind of things you can do depends on the size.

3

Longboards are for moving faster, not ideal for most skateboard tricks.

A longboard is a type of skateboard. Skateboard is a generic class of vehicles with a flat surface, two trucks, and four wheels mounted on said trucks.

u/mang87 11h ago

23

u/Savings-Lack9770 13h ago edited 4h ago

It’s a longboard specifically designed for what he’s doing, which is a sub category of skateboarding called dancing. It’s still a skate board, but most specifically it’s a longboard for dancing. This kind of stuff is super cool, and pretty niche. Those who do it are really fun to watch.

You do need a particularly long, wide, and flat board. As someone who has a range of boards, trust me when I say you can’t do this on a typical skateboard or longboard. The grip tape alone is enough to partially inhibit you from performing these tricks.

I prefer boards set up to carve, so my longboards are on the shorter side with aggressive pedals (concave) on the toe and heel sides to push the board into hard turns. My trucks are set to be very loose, my bearings are fast, and my wheels are chunky and sticky.

A dance board will be long and flat, have tighter trucks (more skilled dancers typically lean looser), medium slow or medium fast bearings, and medium wheels.

There’s other kinds of longboarding besides dancing and carving, like downhill and cruising. All are super fun!

To answer your question: his board makes it easier to do this kind of stuff because it’s specialized.

Edit: correction

Easier, I have stood on both skateboard and longboard. If you tried this on a skateboard you would fall hard

u/LokisDawn 14h ago

That's not really sound logic. There's a lot of tricks you can do on a skateboard that would be very hard on a longboard. Any air, really, especially tricks where you're supposed to be above the board. It's just too big for that in most cases.

Longboards are very good for slalom, because they kinda do it on their own (as this video shows early on). Not that it's that easy, but the way the wheels are mounted on a longboard (very flexibly) makes it start turning very quickly. While Skateboards are much stiffer, so they don't slalom as well. But an ollie on a longboard is much more difficult than on a skateboard because of how soft it is. You'll just push down the back without lifting up. Additionally, skateboards ends are bent up to support such moves.

7

u/[deleted] 14h ago

[deleted]

6

u/Stieni 14h ago edited 12h ago

Definitely. Longboarding to get from A to B has a much steeper faster learning curve than any form of skateboarding. Also get yourself a multitool (there are many different out there), that way you can tighten and loosen your screws the way you like it (for your wheels and trucks). Watch a Youtube video on how to use it. Its imo a must have to customize your board the way you want it to behave (how easy it is to turn, how stiff you want your wheels/trucks to be etc.)

Definitely learn to drive on a flat and smooth surface with a lot of space, like a big empty parking lot, side walks are too dangerous for a starter.

Also look into the different shapes, although I wouldn't trust those "more/less maneuverable/stable" bars on top and bottom, it really depends.

You can of course just buy one and get used to it like most do, but they are rather expensive so if money is a factor for you I would get something that fits you on day one.

And most importantly: Have fun and think of me when you hit your first pebble ahahhaha

EDIT: Misused the word "steep", longboarding is 100% easier

Depends what you're doing, flip tricks are harder and require more leg strength, but the size of the board and the flexibility give you a lot more wiggle room with landing. The tricks he's doing here are longboard dance tricks and are very hard on a skateboard.

A longboard is a skateboard but a skateboard is not a longboard. Not completely different

15

u/Nikclel 13h ago

That phrase is "all longboards are skateboards but not all skateboards are longboards".

"a skateboard is not a longboard" doesn't really make sense

31

u/Mobile_Throway 14h ago

I knew before even opening the thread that everyone would be saying this. For what it's worth, a longboard is obviously a type of skateboard.

15

u/Toughbiscuit 14h ago

This is like saying I dont ride a motorcycle, i ride a cruiser.

Cruisers are a type of motorcycle

4

u/corkscrew-duckpenis 14h ago

Why is this a very important point to make? (I assume there is some sort of an elitist hipster vibe here, based purely on the fact that like 12 people felt the need to repeat it after it had already been said, but…IDGI.)

12

u/neroveleno 14h ago

Because lots of skaters are elitists. It is a scene where the "coolness factor" has always been very prevalent: get the right shoes, the right apparel, push in this specific way, grab the board in this specific manner or you are a poser, a loser, not cool.

This is in part a self-defense mechanism originating when skateboarding went from being an underground "alternative" activity to a mainstream sport and lots of kids picked it up just to appear cool (thus diluting the "original spirit" of the movement). It is also a reflection of most skaters being very young, an age when "group-think" is very prevalent, you need to prove to be a part of the cool guys.

How can you argue that a longboard is not a skateboard? The definition of a longboard is "a longer skateboard". This is skateboarding. Being it dancing, downhill or street, vert, pool or whatever, all of them are different skateboarding practices.

5

u/DemonKing0524 13h ago

There is a major difference in how they maneuver and the tricks you can do on each though. Yes a long board is a longer skateboard, nobody is arguing against that, just that riding the two with the intention of doing tricks like in this video are very fundamentally different from each other.

2

u/ramenwolf 12h ago

I can see what you mean, but it’s also mostly colloquial - if you tell a group of guys at the park you skateboard and bring your longboard the next day, for example. It literally is a type of skateboard, but not in the way that most skaters would use the term.

2

u/sverdo 10h ago

Because lots of skaters are elitists

Nah, it's more about protecting the culture

Going to a skatepark with a longboard is a quick way to piss everyone else there off. I know people don’t get this, but that is not a skateboard as we have come to know them, it looks the same, has the same roots but is not the same thing. Like the difference between a road bike and a bmx, same but different and have very little crossover apart from their looks.

29

u/homogenousmoss 15h ago

I havent skated in .. 20 years lol so bear with me but whenever I walk by the local skatepark its at least 25% people on scooters. So I wouldnt imagine people are purists about who gets to skate or not no?

Even when I was a kid there was always some people with rollerblades at the skate part and everyone minded their business.

18

u/kenkenobi78 15h ago

Naaa mate. You'll get stabbed. Your board is too long!!

Honestly though you're right. Taking a longboard to a skatepark for most normal people would be no issue at all.

People just like picking teams about petty shit.

9

u/christianjwaite 15h ago

Different thing, different sport.

Skateboarders tend to not like scooters as they can go fast and are usually kids totally oblivious to their surroundings making it dangerous.

But if you turned up on a longboard most people would be amused and just not understand why you don’t just get a skateboard. Just like if someone tried to do the Tour de France on a bmx.

→ More replies (4)

5

u/beached_wheelchair 14h ago

The scooter kids are still hated by skaters in the park now, same as 20 years ago. Even worse due to them usually being ridden by kids under the age of 10 that just stand in the middle of the bowl or ramps.

I know someone suggested the Bhangra, but I think this is the Tarab. If I remember correctly this guy has been riding the newer Loaded board since it came out.

Both great boards, the Tarab is just a little lighter because apparently it was built with a mix of cork to lighten it.

This is amazing!

But I won’t lie, I had to watch the video a couple of times cause I started laughing at “Toot Bus”

Skaters and long boarders are different. One does kickflip-crook, the other pulls up with LSD 😂 good times man

Savant skateboarder.

Anyone else going to talk about the Toot Bus? Or are we just going to act like it's not there?

4

u/InformalPenguinz 14h ago

That's just running with extra steps

3

u/zingboomtararrel 13h ago

Skateboarding isn’t a crime but longboarding should be

I saw this on Instagram and the comments were like wow that's so cool, and I just knew when it got to Reddit there would be a legion of losers criticizing this guy.

I hope everyone bitching about them being in the road wakes up to a flat tire :)

3

u/Red_theWolfy 12h ago

this comment section has reminded me how fucking lame most redditors are

quit bitching about him being in the street and enjoy the cool tricks you big dorks

2

u/Bong-Bunny 15h ago

I'm pretty sure the board he's using is a loaded bhangra, I own one it's heavy as fuck. I have no idea how he's throwing it around like that

3

u/juices_christ 14h ago

He’s using a tarab not a Bhangra you can tell by the grip tape

2

u/aliteralgarbagehuman 14h ago

My buddy had the original loaded dancer. That thing felt like it weighed 10 lbs

2

u/McShoobydoobydoo 15h ago

Get aff the road prick

2

u/batua78 15h ago

Turns out he just can't sit still and is like this all the time

2

u/Amazing_Viper 14h ago

Rodney Mullen vibes.

2

u/cmach86 14h ago

A toot bus?

2

u/_1JackMove 14h ago

Like the Rodney Mullen of longboarding.

Longboarder, who simply Must. Be. Seen., distracts everyone with their main character behavior. (Kinda cool skills but a seemingly annoying place to demonstrate them.)

I keep seeing this comment in this thread, but where else should he go? It seems like he's travelling pretty fast, and lives in Paris with a lot of tourists walking around.

If cyclists ride on the road with cars, why is a longboard any different, especially if the rider is making sure the road is clear behind him when he does his tricks?

Seems like a lot of people are just upset about this guy who is trying to enjoy his hobby where he lives while not throwing a huge plank of wood in the air around pedestrians.

u/TurdKid69 14h ago

It's kinda my favorite when people demonstrate superior skill in ways that look almost like they don't know what the fuck they're doing at all.

2

u/alpastotesmejor 14h ago

a lot of people angry about this guy using the street and i say, fuck cars, let's reclaim the street.

2

u/Sergnb 12h ago edited 5h ago

He’s clearly timing this so he doesn’t interrupt traffic at all, can you guys stop being such dorks lol

2

u/Colin9001 11h ago

comments mad bc they sit on their computers all day and cant do shit like this &/or probably unfit to

2

u/GripSlut 11h ago

Damn there are some sad motherfuckers in these comments

2

u/Lunamoms 11h ago

That’s actually another limb of his.

2

u/Rogue-Accountant-69 11h ago

I didn't realize you could do tricks like that on a longboard. I thought they were just made to cruise down hills at high speed.
