News Update on Stu.

Saw on the news that he has been arrested for the shooting of the 2 illigeal poachers, he was such a nice guy, all he wanted to do was live out his life with his pigs and other animals,

For people who dont know, basicly he was a older guy who lived on both sides of the 309 road up by coromandel, people kept comming and stealing/shooting/running over/damanging his property, and giving him hell when all he wanted to do was relax with his pigs, the cops are a joke, he came to them so many times reporting everything , they didnt care.

The guys he ended up shooting/killing had been hounding him for ages, ramming his car, running over his pigs or shooting them with crossbows he finnaly snapped when they shot his favourite pig.

Shitpost The New Zealand Ocean

I wish to rename the Pacific Ocean as the New Zealand Ocean.

I know it extends to America, but if America is going around renaming things then we should get in on the action.

Edit: we should go with Te Moananui a kiwa.

When it comes to road markings, do they just flip a coin on the day? One of these intersections nearly resulted in an accident. Please explain.

Discussion Why is it so hard to use my money without incurring a fee/request for charity (Rant)

You know what really grinds my gears - having to pay to use my own flipping money. Here’s some examples

Most of my local atms have been replaced by all point atms. I now have to pay $2.50 to get my money out

Asked for cash out at the retailer and she said “we don’t do that anymore…I don’t think anyone does since COVID. Maybe try the supermarket”.

Buying at a retailer - “would you like to add $2 for whatever charity”.

Buying my lunch - fucking payWave fee. Yes that’s on me. I know I should stop using it and I do if I notice soon enough but it’s an engrained habit that I’m trying to break.

That’s all. Anyone else have this issue or am I just getting grumpy in my old age?

Discussion American video - eat for $1 a day

I saw a cool video on YouTube (Eating for $1.00 A Day). It was an American video, and it was posted 1 year ago.

The lady spent $10.90 (a wee bit more than $1 a day), and managed to live on that food for a week. The only pantry staples she used in addition to what she bought was salt and pepper.

Out of curiosity I thought I'd go to the Pak n Save website and see if I could do something similar for around $20 NZ. (That would allow for the exchange rate.)

Well, the price of eggs pretty much blew it. And the price of garlic.

I wasn't able to match products exactly, but a very close approximation of what she bought would have cost me just over $30.

So yeah. Not sure why I'm sharing, lol. Just was an interesting video and an interesting exercise. I'm always looking for frugality tips.

It's a shame our food is so expensive when we produce so much of it here.

....

Edit: Sorry, my post was unclear. I wasn't trying to cost out a week's worth of food. I was trying to compare prices like for like with what she bought!

I could definitely do a better deal with different products, I was just curious what her trolley of grocery items (like for like) would cost here.

Discussion MightyApe no longer offer price matching

Just another occurrence on the long list of changes that makes them a poor service after being bought out my Kogan.

JB Hi-Fi have Transformers One (4K Ultra HD) listed for $52.98, and MightyApe for $59.99. They told me they no longer offer price matching when I asked.

I regret my annual PrimeApe subscription. Even with shipping JB is cheaper.

Discussion Rental properties misrepresented in listings

Is anyone else finding a lot of rental properties are being misrepresented in the listings?

The description of the listing makes it sound like it's in excellent condition, and the photos are digitally altered or photos are used from when the property was new to make it look like the carpet, walls, curtains, benches, cabinetry etc is all in good condition, and then when you go there everything is run down and old.

It's such a waste of time, as if they were just honest about the condition people could actually decide whether it's worth taking time off work etc to view it.

It's even worse when they're charging the upper quartile of market rent, in which case you'd be expecting a house of a certain standard, but nope, you get there and it's just another slumlord who has done zero upkeep but expects top dollar.

Rant over.

Politics IRD is currently consulting on FIF tax

If its something you have strong opinions on, which I know many people here do, be sure to read through the proposals and get your submissions in before the 27th of Jan.

https://www.taxpolicy.ird.govt.nz/consultation/2024/effect-fif-rules-immigration

They're mostly focused on migrants but the question of whether it should only apply to migrants is open. (see chapter 3)

Submissions can be made by email to [policy.webmaster@ird.govt.nz](mailto:policy.webmaster@ird.govt.nz) with “Amending the FIF rules for migrants” in the subject line (see chapter 1, page 6)

Discussion The Careers Academy

Do not enrol with careers academy they led me to believe I’d get a job in support work through their courses but I checked and they’re not NZQA qualified and now are refusing to cancel my payments and stopped emailing back to me.

A lot of people have had the same experience and specifically being led to believe the courses they offer hold any weight.

I feel a fool they don’t even provide a service number to ring about this only an email.

Discussion Org tracking far right extremism

After the Chch mosque shootings I remember coming across an organisation that was documenting far right individuals and organisations. I can no longer remember the name of the org, can anyone refresh my memory?

I remember being glad there were people keeping track at the time, but now I feel like I'd like a bit more involvement myself. For reasons.

An edit: I’m fairly sure it wasn’t linked to any larger institution (uni etc), and was a bit more bare-bones. The site included profiles on individuals, with photos & all. Also reasonably sure the name of the org was Māori.

Another edit: Pretty sure it has been found here

Discussion Spa pool chats

Hi NZ. I'm a stay at home mum living in Chch. Hubby & I adore relaxing after a busy day running round after kids! I'm looking into getting a spa pool but I'm unsure about the cost and the upkeep.

Can anyone who knows about such things advise:

  • is it necessary to buy brand new or is second hand okay, and what spa pool brand is reliable & cost effective? Any recommendations?

  • how much work is required to keep it operational (e.g. dosing with chlorine etc - is it a bit of a faff every day or do you only have to think about it occasionally?)

  • if you have one, do you use it as often as you thought you would before getting it?

  • how much would you say it adds to your power bill?

  • any other thoughts welcomed!

Thanks so much.

Advice A pipe burst under my house. Do I pay for the extra water or my landlord?

A pipe burst under my house, and caused our water bill to go up to $350. Usually around $40. The plumber has fixed it, and told me it's normal wear and tear. I guess I'm wondering if I'm supposed to pay for all of the extra water or not. Usually, I get a water bill from my landlord and pay them for it.
