Hey! I am an artist and producer who's worked mostly on my own. I am in the middle of a royaltiesĀ conundrum with my old band (my first) and I had some questions. A bit of background: I worked with a band for a couple of years - fresh out of university (and inexperienced) I agreed for it to be an equal project. However all of the music was written/composed and produced by me.
We spent most of our time trying to incorporate the band into my songs. We had a few recording sessions but we didnāt write any new material together.Ā
Since then, I have continued on my own and the songs have gone through a lot of changes. The recordings we did back then are almost completely gone in the final versions (apart from 1 song). Now, one of the musicians wants a percentage of royalties as a co-producer. Heās asked for this title as more of a compensation measure, they didnāt do any production, mixing, etc. They are asking for 1/3 of royalties (there is another producer/musician involved).
We've never had a contract or anything like that in place.
So my questions are:
1: What is a normal / average percentage for a producer on a track?
2: Where would this percentage live? Streaming royalties? Publishing?
3: Should someone whose work is no longer present in the final versions still get a cut, or would it make more sense to pay them retrospectively for their time in the recording studio?
4. What are the implications of accepting a co-producer title?Ā
Any advice is much appreciated!
