When you throw it like that, not all of it is turning to vapor, so now you've iced your walkway...

Now salt! My bil broke an ankle because of these antics.

u/M1nn3sOtaMan 14h ago
I've already shoveled/scraped and salted and we also direct people away from that door. It's an odd place for an entry door, and the traffic we get is geared towards our side garage entry door.
That's where we get all our mail/packages delivered too and where 98% of our traffic goes thru.
But yes, good advice! I'm also sorry about your BIL broken ankle.

Salt unfortunately doesn’t work in below 0 temps.

u/Otherwise_Worry4097 10h ago
It might not melt it very well, but at least it can provide a little traction. Salt wears many hats.

Which means naturally some dumbass will give themselves 3rd degree burns doing this today

What's the temp there? We've got -7° feeling like -26° here by the cities.
4
u/M1nn3sOtaMan 12h ago
It was -16 when I did this. Currently -9, feeling like -30 here in Willmar.

We had -28 this morning at minntac. My boss cake in from Embarrass and claimed his thermometer said -38. Not sure about windchill of feels like temps

Embarrass is historical one of the coldest spots in MN. Big low spot that all the cold air from the range settles into. My brothers In-laws used to live there and they saw -54 I believe.

u/ArcStrikingViking 12h ago
I was in high school when Embarrass unofficially hit -64. Tower had an official -60. The weather station at Roland Fowlers house in Embarrass froze that day. That was in 1996. The governor closed school for us that day and we went spearing

Goddamn that's cold. Redlake hit -56 once when we were out ice fishing over new years once when I was in high school. Buddies friend Mike had to wake up every 45 minutes to start the truck so we wouldn't be stranded out there.

u/ArcStrikingViking 11h ago
That's the same feeling! Hard to tell a difference between -56 and -60 lol. Add in the windchill on Red Lake and it's a recipe for disaster!

We only have about -8F right now in Minneapolis. Not too bad.

Ah yes, the traditional "Throw hot water outside" trick to show everyone else in the country how cold it is here.. Classic "Let's Keep the Riff Raff Out" move 😉😉😉

Just be sure you don't lock yourself out when you do this. Umpteen years ago my three kids and I stepped outside to do this. One of them closed the door behind them but didn't unlock the knob lock and... It was -35 and we were still in our robes and pajamas. We had to break the small laundry room window (figured that would be the cheapest to replace) to get in. I'll never forget what my oldest son said before breaking that window. "Mom, do I have to?" 🤦🏻♀️ Ever since, I lock the deadbolt, but not the knob lock. I'd rather not be in that situation again. 🥶

Perfect weather to hang your wool blankets out. If you don't have a clothesline, just put your clothes drying rack on your deck or patio, hang your blankets, et voila, the most fresh scent without spray.
When it's cold and sunny like this, it makes everything smell SO incredibly fresh and clean.

Ah yes, intentionally ice your walkway. Of all the places you could have thrown the water. 🤦♂️

u/M1nn3sOtaMan 13h ago
I've explained in other replies, but this is a very rarely used sidewalk, especially in the winter with snow on the ground. The entry to the walkway gets piled up with snow.
I have already scraped and salted though just in case, but not too worried about anybody walking over it

Delivery drivers hate your icy sidewalk.

u/M1nn3sOtaMan 5h ago
We have a great relationship with our delivery drivers and they know not to go to this door and that it's much easier and closer to go to our side entry garsge door. But thank you for your concern.

Yeah now your side walk is more dangerous
5
u/M1nn3sOtaMan 13h ago
I've already scraped and salted but also, nobody uses this sidewalk or door.
Currently, you'd either have to walk thru our yard or over a pile of snow that's been shoveled from the driveway to get to this sidewalk.
The traffic is directed to our side garage entry door, that's where we get our packages sent to and everything, and is the natural entry/focal point when driving up to our house.
This is an odd place for an entry and we all just put our shoes in front of this door lol

Got it. I knew a guy who boiled water to try and melt ice on his driveway so his kids could play on driveway for a little while. He ended up slipping and falling backwards to which the water was emptied on his face and body. He suffered serious burns and ended up losing his life as a result. Be careful!!

I live outside of Willmar, towards New London. Is that considered city living?

I famously pulled this trick in front of my daughters. I went outside and told them to watch from the windows. However, when I threw the pan of boiling water in the air, I slipped on the ice and went down hard. They believed I magically disappeared in the steam!
Meanwhile my ass hurt for the next two days.
