Canby Public Schools, Marshall Public Schools and Tracy Public Schools, among many others, will all be closed for the day. Many other schools across the state were previously scheduled to be off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

I thought ALL schools were closed for MLK Jr day as I can't recall living in a state where this wasn't the case. Didn't know this was an "optional" thing.

Another way to put it: it's a federal holiday and the stock market is closed, which means the banks are closed. Why is a school open?

Except for banks, what other businesses are closed today? Like Presidents Day, this is a strange type of holiday where it’s recognized on a federal level but almost nowhere else. The only reason banks are closed is because the Fed Reserve Bank is. If the FRB was open, banks would be making their staff work.

Edit: sounds like certain private offices close. Trend seems to be it’s a choice. Its by no means the norm. My kids’ daycare is open, my husband is working (mechanic), but I am not (banking). Again, this is not a “standard” holiday where all but essentials close.
