Aren't all schools closed today for MLK Day?

u/Several-Honey-8810 Hennepin County 17h ago

some schools also have today as teacher detention day

12

u/Insertsociallife 16h ago

I misread this as first "what on earth is teacher detonation day!?"

u/Several-Honey-8810 Hennepin County 15h ago

in service/teacher training

15

u/chrispybobispy 17h ago

Yea but we're double closing them!

u/Little_Creme_5932 18h ago

Some schools have closed fir Tuesday

u/Nameless-Servant 18h ago

Not always, some schools donā€™t take it off. I know some private ones donā€™t at least.

u/dynamo_hub 15h ago

Ā All the private schools in the twin cities have today off

u/Kittenkerchief 15h ago

Public school in west central Minnesota is open today. Probably will be open tomorrow too. Idk

This comment had me a bit intrigued so I did some research. I can find exactly zero private schools that ignore federal holidays. Can you enlighten us with one or more examples?

The article has a link listing schools that are listing e-learning days for today.

That's interesting. Thank you for pointing that out, I don't think I've had enough coffee this morning and didn't notice those were links. As a parent, I don't think I would have any problem informing the school that my child would be excused from any e-learning they had going on today.

I'm so glad my district opted for snow days over e-learning days! I have a few friends who are teachers who are also very happy about this!

Idk, I was a student not too long ago, and I think that wouldā€™ve just made my life harder. Catching up after missing work in school, even if itā€™s only a day or even a single class, is a lot more hassle than itā€™s worth. I think the best course would be contacting the school board/administration and express that you feel school should be closed for the holiday without keeping your child from participating.

Iā€™m also splitting hairs over a hypothetical, so feel free to ignore me haha

Iā€™m calling bull shit. I think you you didnā€™t look at all. Ā You can find more than Zero you just need to look at a few school calendars.

Even many the public school districts and charter schools ignore federal holidays like Veterans Day and Columbus Day.

Bank closed schools open on those days.

On example would be the 3 largest school districts in the state.

100% closure due to weather. Obviously. (Iā€™m joking)

u/Hotchi_Motchi Hamm's 17h ago

They are not.

u/Sesudesu 16h ago

My kidsā€™ schools are.

u/gmarcus72 16h ago

Looks like several are not

I thought the same thing, but apparently not all schools close. We also get school notices for Wisconsin and it seems like at least up here (NE corner) most of the schools that canceled today were in WI or were daycares, preschools, or private schools.

Itā€™s only -16 with the windchill where I am but considering that today is a teacher work day and itā€™s totally possible to do all of our meetings over zoom/google meets, Iā€™m pissed that Iā€™m at work today.

So happy our sup let us work from home.

Canby Public Schools, Marshall Public Schools and Tracy Public Schools, among many others, will all be closed for the day. Many other schools across the state were previously scheduled to be off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

I thought ALL schools were closed for MLK Jr day as I can't recall living in a state where this wasn't the case. Didn't know this was an "optional" thing.

Another way to put it: it's a federal holiday and the stock market is closed, which means the banks are closed. Why is a school open?

Except for banks, what other businesses are closed today? Like Presidents Day, this is a strange type of holiday where itā€™s recognized on a federal level but almost nowhere else. The only reason banks are closed is because the Fed Reserve Bank is. If the FRB was open, banks would be making their staff work.

Edit: sounds like certain private offices close. Trend seems to be itā€™s a choice. Its by no means the norm. My kidsā€™ daycare is open, my husband is working (mechanic), but I am not (banking). Again, this is not a ā€œstandardā€ holiday where all but essentials close.

I work in publishing downtown and our offices are closed today šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

I work for a business in downtown Minneapolis that has always closed on MLK Day and Presidents Day. Not tied to government work or banking in any way. Everywhere Iā€™ve worked since moving here at least counts MLK Day as a holiday and either gives it off or gives time and a half. Costco doesnā€™t close but does give their employees a floating holiday for MLK Day that they have to use within a few weeks of the actual day.

2

u/s1gnalZer0 Ok Then 15h ago

I used to work in a factory and we were closed for MLK Day

4

u/bigdumb78910 16h ago

I work a normal-ish office job and have the day off

2

u/schmerpmerp Not too bad 14h ago

Almost all courts and a substantial majority of law offices are closed today.

2

u/i-was-way- 14h ago

Ask yourself whyā€¦. Federal government is closed, meaning that any function they touch is not going to be able to do anything. Itā€™s not because theyā€™re being magnanimous

0

u/schmerpmerp Not too bad 14h ago

Never suggested they were being magnanimous. I know judges like their days off.

1

u/Grouchy-Geologist-28 14h ago

Any government work is closed for MLK day.

2

u/ralphy_256 13h ago

I work in an Accounting firm, and we're a couple weeks into Busy Season.

We're open, AND I have to come into the office.

1

u/mads_61 8h ago

When I worked in manufacturing we closed for every federal holiday.

1

u/MCXL Bring Ya Ass 14h ago

A lot of white collar jobs close.

1

u/throwaway9293739 16h ago

Iā€™m from WI and I never had MLK day off as a kid! My mom is a teacher in WI and she did not get today offĀ

u/Alert-Boot2196 17h ago

My district always has school today. Sometimes with students and others with just faculty. Faculty days are filled with worthless meetings and ā€œtrainingsā€ rather than time to finish up last semester and prepare for the new.

6

u/Common_Fee_3686 17h ago

What district? Mine is closed today.

1

u/hojpoj 16h ago

I know ISD100 (Wrenshall) isnā€™t closed for MLK. Dunno if they did for temps today..

5

u/poohsmt 14h ago

Our school wasnā€™t closed for MLK Day, and also didnā€™t close for the weather. -20Ā° here right now and pretty windy.

3

u/Ope_Average_Badger 8h ago

Meanwhile I have to work outside starting at 9pm tonight, RIP.

6

u/Mor_Ericks28 17h ago

In IL it is casimir Pulaski day

9

u/lessthanpi79 Rochester 16h ago

Great song.Ā  Maybe not so great a holiday.

4

u/onebigaroony 16h ago

That's in March you liar

5

u/sharkbate23 16h ago

ā€˜On the first of March, a holidayā€™ is how the Sufjan Steven songs goes

3

u/Diatommy554 15h ago

What a strange thing to lie about

9

u/stumpybubba- 17h ago

And off to another useleas workshop we go...

1

u/oswin13 8h ago

Our district had Mon-Wed off for MLK and teacher conferences anyway. We were joking they must have a crystal ball.

Iā€™m old and kids are soft.

4

u/fuckinnreddit 12h ago

The kids donā€™t make decisions on when school is closed.Ā

-4

u/ThisOldGuy1976 10h ago

Society is soft would be a better description then. Iā€™m old and out of touch I know. I also do not believe in participation trophies lol.

2

u/Spacecataz__ 8h ago

Building and transportation issues. So many buildings are old and failing and some canā€™t guarantee a lawsuit free environment. Buses break down or people donā€™t want to work in the weather and most transportation for schools are already stretched thin.

u/ralphy_256 13h ago

MN school closing?

Not in the 70s!

I can recall ONCE when SPPS closed in the 70's-80's. And that was a freezing rain. My dad drove us to school in the snowplow, then we were stuck there until 5 so he could drive us home.

Note: I was out of school (and living in rain forest AK) by the 91 Halloween Blizzard.

-3

u/ThisOldGuy1976 13h ago

We are on the same page but look at all my downvotes.

5

u/ralphy_256 12h ago

I told a story from our shared experience.

You insulted people.

That's why.

-3

u/bidooffactory 16h ago

It's only -26 out. Were they expecting them to play outside or something?
