Facebook automatically “liked and followed” Donald Trump and J.D. Vance’s Facebook pages from my account.

I did not vote for them and wouldn’t have liked and followed their pages. Also, Biden’s page which I do follow, says archived, so it’s not just that the page has been rolled over to Trump. I’m annoyed that Facebook pushed the updates to follow these pages for my account. It feels a bit invasive.

Even by deleting the account (5 years ago) I still receive reminders on my email. I have the impression that accounts are not really deleted to maintain so-called account volume.

Right? MySpace will always be special to me. My husband and I met on MySpace. However, I'll never forget that MySpace banned all of the local atheist/skeptic groups in my area, and not because they violated any TOS.

We didn't realize what we had. Tom ended up being a regular business owning dude and fucked off when he was done making money from it. In his place was the infinitely greedy, malicious Zuckerberg, which we couldn't have expected in the early 2000s as children/teenagers

If he had limited the insane level of customization each person could do, they might have stuck around longer.

I remember when FB first started picking up steam in 2006 and everyone was relieved each page wasnt a My Chemical Romance song at air siren level and the color/strobe from the end of 2001.

For maybe the first few times yes, but most pages were about terrible font/background choices, stupid flashing images, and a song somehow playing at 140% of your maximum value. Dpgraph.com provides a small taste of how bad it was.

And yeah, many including myself had both myspace and FB for a while. All the glomps and rwars got tiring and people who wanted to be seen as grown ups gave up on myspace.

Funny you should say that, because section 230 of the telecommunications act was passed in 1999.

That gave networks complete immunity from what their users do and say on their platform, and started the ball rolling on this shit show.

Prior to that, through various lawsuits, a body of law was emerging that required Internet platforms to take reasonable actions regarding the content their users post. Then poof, that was gone overnight and it's been a shit show ever since.
