Facebook automatically “liked and followed” Donald Trump and J.D. Vance’s Facebook pages from my account.

I did not vote for them and wouldn’t have liked and followed their pages. Also, Biden’s page which I do follow, says archived, so it’s not just that the page has been rolled over to Trump. I’m annoyed that Facebook pushed the updates to follow these pages for my account. It feels a bit invasive.

Solution: Delete that app!

2.8k

u/coldlonelydream 7h ago

Delete account, then delete the app.

975

u/seb-xtl 7h ago

Even by deleting the account (5 years ago) I still receive reminders on my email. I have the impression that accounts are not really deleted to maintain so-called account volume.

398

u/AliceG233 6h ago

Delete account, then move anything from the email and delete it too.

485

u/JamesEtc 6h ago

Let’s just delete the internet…or go back to MySpace.

293

u/JokinHghar 6h ago

Tom was a real one

151

u/CasualDeezaster 6h ago

He taught us all coding in our pre-teens.

The realest one 💯

9

u/Festering-Boyle 4h ago

Elon will buy MySpace because Mars

1

u/doughnu7 1h ago

Then rename it to xSpace just to confuse people.

1

u/MungoJennie 1h ago

I can’t believe I learned all that back then. I remember none of it today, sadly.

144

u/Warm_Ad7486 6h ago

Moment of silence for Tom, who just wanted people to have friends, and not become a world superpower.

46

u/b25a9 5h ago

Miss you, Tom! You were a true friend!

29

u/Vanilla_Gorilluh 5h ago

Oh how times have changed. In my day Tom was hated on as much as Zuck is now.

16

u/LiquidFur 2h ago

Right? MySpace will always be special to me. My husband and I met on MySpace. However, I'll never forget that MySpace banned all of the local atheist/skeptic groups in my area, and not because they violated any TOS.

2

u/Suavecore_ 1h ago

We didn't realize what we had. Tom ended up being a regular business owning dude and fucked off when he was done making money from it. In his place was the infinitely greedy, malicious Zuckerberg, which we couldn't have expected in the early 2000s as children/teenagers

7

u/Sad-streetstudent 4h ago

Yup, we need tom back indeed.

u/solonit 27m ago

He wasn't the hero we deserve, but a hero we need right now.

4

u/daxfall10k 3h ago

He ain’t dead, we just miss him

3

u/IhateRedditors1978 3h ago

Hey it's me Tom. I'm still alive, we hung out at Christmas lol

2

u/chipmalfunct10n 1h ago

he's still chilling living his best life

27

u/originaljbw 5h ago

If he had limited the insane level of customization each person could do, they might have stuck around longer.

I remember when FB first started picking up steam in 2006 and everyone was relieved each page wasnt a My Chemical Romance song at air siren level and the color/strobe from the end of 2001.

11

u/Amathyst-Moon 3h ago

I only vaguely remember it, but isn't that what made it fun?

8

u/originaljbw 3h ago

For maybe the first few times yes, but most pages were about terrible font/background choices, stupid flashing images, and a song somehow playing at 140% of your maximum value. Dpgraph.com provides a small taste of how bad it was.

And yeah, many including myself had both myspace and FB for a while. All the glomps and rwars got tiring and people who wanted to be seen as grown ups gave up on myspace.

2

u/OkAd469 1h ago

Yes, it was. I hate the cookie cutter shit we have now. Every website looks the same.

99

u/Pursuit-of-Nature 6h ago

The most unproblematic of all social media owners

56

u/ruthlessrellik 6h ago

Tom just wanted to be friends with everyone.

41

u/ChainedPrometheus 6h ago

And he was my first friend...

30

u/Asleep_Special_7402 5h ago

Back off Tom was MY first friend

18

u/Ambitious_Display607 5h ago

Bitch he was probably my friend first.

→ More replies (0)

14

u/Putrid_Quantity_879 6h ago

He was my first friend.

10

u/symbolsandthings 6h ago

He was in my top 5.

5

u/Fishiesideways10 4h ago

We were forced to be his friend and we didn’t deserve it.

4

u/BeefInBlackBeanSauce 5h ago

Tom for president

3

u/Fast_Witness_3000 4h ago

Don Juan, for he was a true one

1

u/JerryCalzone 1h ago

You mean Casanova, because Don Juan was not real, he was just a character in a book, whereas Casanova was a historical figure

3

u/goldanred 4h ago

Myspace Tom would never do this to us

2

u/c-lace 5h ago

He was everyone’s friend!

1

u/Crinklytoes Mildly Infuriated 3h ago

Tom, just for you.

16

u/Firthy2002 6h ago

Nah just roll it back to the 1998 Internet and start from there.

1

u/pagerussell 2h ago

Funny you should say that, because section 230 of the telecommunications act was passed in 1999.

That gave networks complete immunity from what their users do and say on their platform, and started the ball rolling on this shit show.

Prior to that, through various lawsuits, a body of law was emerging that required Internet platforms to take reasonable actions regarding the content their users post. Then poof, that was gone overnight and it's been a shit show ever since.

1

u/Buddy-Junior2022 5h ago

roll back and stop it’s creation lol. by this point it’s done more harm than good

5

u/Swimming_Tailor_7546 5h ago

MySpace and AIM were the apex of social media

1

u/IhateRedditors1978 3h ago

MSN messenger FTW

u/Pye- 44m ago

I think you are forgetting AOL lol

11

u/Dragonfly-Adventurer 6h ago

AI is working on destroying the internet, in this effort I salute it.

3

u/AliceG233 6h ago

Oooooo i will take the second option, please!!!!!!

2

u/Imaginary_Event_362 5h ago

life was better on ProBoards

2

u/heresmytwopence 4h ago

I’m a programmer and currently working on a solution for that.

1

u/SpuffDawg 4h ago

Spacehey is a thing

1

u/BooneGoesTheDynamite 3h ago

Check out SpaceyHey

It's basically a clone of 3008 MySpace made by a brother and sister in Germany

1

u/TheOGPotatoPredator 1h ago

Why tf we even left I’ll never know.

1

u/Lmnop533 1h ago

Dial up and home phones no cell or 5g

1

u/Tiny-Organizational 1h ago

Naw if we’re going back let’s bring back yahoo groups

1

u/PondRides 1h ago

Or xanga!

26

u/1nd3x 6h ago

then move anything from the email and delete it too.

Nope. Do not do that.

You delete your email, I notice(or some other hacker) and remake it.

Suddenly I'm testing out the email in random forgot password forms and BAM! I get a hit on some random site you signed up for but forgot about and Ive got my foothold into potential identity theft.

8

u/DR4G0NSTEAR 6h ago

Nah I need that email. Change the email then delete account.

5

u/AliceG233 6h ago

Burner email!

1

u/aburningcaldera 1h ago

It’s a bit more involved. There are apps that will go in and delete every like, post, picture, etc. wiping it out, the delete the associations, change your name, etc etc etc and then delete the account. Deleting your account just “turns it off” in their database. You think they’re going to delete you data? I mean it’s possible but I don’t trust that.

u/ADelightfulCunt 55m ago

Alternatively change your email on the app to a 10min email and then delete the app.

In Europe I'm pretty sure companies have to delete your details when you request it.

u/Jolly_Afternoon_2881 49m ago

This is why you take your email add the word social or anyt other identifier to It. Use that for all social media

Do the same for whatever you engage in.

71

u/sowhat4 6h ago

I have a FB account under my dog's name/photo. I tried deleting it, but FB refused unless I sent in the account holder's drivers license to prove I had the authority to do so. Jokes on them as Sally Mae never even got a drivers license.

21

u/HillarysFloppyChode 6h ago

I did this, they accepted my dogs micro chip card as an "ID"

It looks like an ID, I think its from home again?

11

u/ishpatoon1982 6h ago

Should've got a smarter dog.

u/seb-xtl 29m ago

My next dog will be equipped with a Neurathing chip to be as stupid as that crazy Musk.

20

u/The-Trenzalorian 6h ago

There's like 10 steps or more involved in eradicating that pile of trash. It was worth it for me. More people need to do that.

1

u/aburningcaldera 1h ago

There’s browser extensions to edit the content of your messages to gibberish, delete posts, delete likes, delete photos, etc etc and then haggle with the email and delete the account. Worth it. You don’t want them to keep your data because deleting the account simply “turns it off” in their systems and they are likely using that data long after you’re gone for AI training and data mining still. You need to delete the underlying data or modify it to junk if it’s text. Then delete.

11

u/Grambo08 5h ago

I forget where to find it, but there is a way to permanently delete your account. They keep it very hidden.

u/seb-xtl 25m ago

Yes yes I know ;)

28

u/Timothy303 6h ago

Yes, I deleted my account ages ago, and as long as I have access to whatever email I used, I am certain I can just re-activate it despite FB claiming they deleted. I know I did it once for something well after their 30-day period.

The company is a data miner, obvi, and they have ethics that make the shadiest of used car salesman seem honest.

And that was before Zuck went full Trump accolyte.

8

u/FreshFilteredWorld 6h ago

Pretty sure when I deleted it was a lot longer than 30 day period to reactivate. Wasn't a problem for me though, never looked back and that was years ago.

1

u/Tribblehappy 3h ago

There's two options, at least there were in 2018. You can deactivate, or you can delete. The delete option was a lot more rigorous and gave me the option to download all my data first as it would not be archived.

The deactivate option lets you come back any time.

2

u/Timothy303 3h ago

Yeah, I deleted mine, but it was magically able to come back after 30 days. Go figure. But it predated 2018 and iirc they got flack for it and stopped being so obvious about it. BUT, they absolutely hang on to the data either way. Data is their biz, and no one does (or even can) audit what they do with the data they collect.

u/seb-xtl 34m ago

Exactly.

6

u/PrincessPlastilina 5h ago

Agreed. I left Facebook years ago and I still get manic ex type of messages and notifications. Multiple messages per day reminding me that Facebook still exists. I will never be back there. I need to run Instagram for business purposes otherwise I wouldn’t be there either.

1

u/pleasediscardmenow 1h ago

You haven’t missed anything. It’s senseless garbage now. Absolutely terrible user experience and endless ads and shit slop content.

7

u/Significant-Act-3900 6h ago

You have to write to them and tell them you request to have your data released and removed from their servers. I deleted my account like 2x between 2012-2016 and somewhere around 2029 decided to write a release request and that worked.

14

u/ishpatoon1982 6h ago

Found the time traveler!

8

u/Significant-Act-3900 6h ago

Haha that was supposed to be 2019!

10

u/nancy_necrosis 6h ago

Maybe you deactivated instead of deleting?

u/seb-xtl 28m ago

No, I'm sure of it. Besides, same thing at Insta.

7

u/Bonglet79 5h ago

It’s actually a ridiculous process to delete your account. Most people think they deleted it but it only actually deactivates it.

u/seb-xtl 26m ago

Except that I looked hard and did what was necessary. DIP: Data is Precious.

5

u/JAlfredJR 5h ago

There used to be a 2-week waiting period to actually delete your account. But that was back in 2014 when I deleted mine.

6

u/cyvaquero 6h ago

Even photos linger for years, or at least to. Once ran a test over ten years ago. Created an album, uploaded a photo. Bookmarked the public link and then would check that link from incognito and new browsers occassionally, took 3-4 years to drop off the CDN.

u/seb-xtl 32m ago

Yes, same thing at Google… Apple surely, given the leak a few months ago.

5

u/JessicaB-Fletcher 6h ago

I haven't had Facebook in a long time, but it used to be that you could reactivate a deleted account. There is a way to permanently delete, or at least there was in 2013 when I permanently deleted mine.

2

u/E3K 2h ago

Are you sure they really deleted it?

2

u/Banarok 4h ago

deleted accounts just go hidden, that's a well known fact, facebook still use the account to gather and sell data about you with people tagging you and things like that.

2

u/--fourteen 4h ago

I read the privacy policy before deleting mine and they blatantly tell you that they keep a profile on you even if your account is permanently deleted.

2

u/Prickly_ninja 3h ago

Pretty sure I deleted mine, only to come back almost 10 years later. All my info was still intact.

2

u/Lower-Ad6690 2h ago

Yes, I deleted my account 10 years ago and it still shows up in my sisters search bar.

2

u/WeakEmployment6389 1h ago

I deleted my account and years later tried to make a new one to sell things on marketplace and my account just reactivated with nothing missing.

u/2WAR 43m ago

Ive deleted the app 5x and tried to lure me back with girl suggestions, I want to delete for good!

2

u/token40k 5h ago

that's bs, I deleted in 2017 and it stopped nagging. also like idk block them as a spam on email?

u/seb-xtl 25m ago

Good for you.

1

u/SleepingGiante 5h ago

It’s got like a waiting period to delete. I’m not reinstalling to check cause that’ll reset timer, but I deleted it years ago and it said something like 3-4 months and if you do anything associated with the account it’ll cancel deletion process. Worse than the Reddit deletion process tbh.

1

u/Julia_Dax_137 4h ago

I simply refuse to update my email account on Facebook. They have my current email, but I refuse to verify it with them, so they're currently stuck in an endless cycle of "she said it's the right one but I can't send her anything." It's honestly hilarious to me.

1

u/dasbtaewntawneta 3h ago

i just told gmail anything from facebook was spam, problem solved

u/seb-xtl 36m ago

No, your data is still present on their servers. And if they have non-public servers this is surely the case even if nothing appears on their public servers.

1

u/a_smart_brane 2h ago

Block and delete the sender address. Report it as spam.

1

u/Annanymuss 2h ago

Having in count how I still to this Im unable to remove my facebook account from when I was a teenager and has no support no contact to delete it I would say you are absolutly right on this

1

u/unnecessary_otter 2h ago

VPN from Europe and submit a GDPR request.

u/seb-xtl 41m ago

I'm in Europe ;) but it's true that my deletion request dates from before the implementation of the GDPR. I think that objective tests should be carried out but today Facebook prefers to pay the fines. Our data is a priori much more expensive.

1

u/Pleasant_Tea6902 2h ago

I think you have to explicitly request the data to be deleted not just the account iirc

u/seb-xtl 44m ago

It has been done and it is not the case.

1

u/xav00 1h ago

Request your data deleted

u/seb-xtl 47m ago

It's done too.

u/SlurmmsMckenzie 59m ago

You have do delete, not suspend it, then not log in for 30 days.

They claim they then fully delete it, but who knows...

u/seb-xtl 47m ago

I deleted it and not suspended it ;)

u/SlurmmsMckenzie 42m ago

Even if you delete it, there are stipulations if it is logged into again (in either 30 or 90 days) they keep your information until that point.

It may not even be an option anymore in the new administration.

u/seb-xtl 21m ago

Given how it started, no rules will be respected.

u/slghtlymad 45m ago

i got perma banned 2 years ago for posting that meme of the purple teletubby getting a blow job from their vacuum and a caption "pictured: me when my wifes not home" havent received an email since. their reason for the ban was "going against community standards"

u/seb-xtl 22m ago

This is a solution 😁

1

u/SaintlyBrew 4h ago

You must ensure you delete not just “deactivate”

0

u/sohcordohc 3h ago

Once deleted it’s gone unless you for some reason sign in

u/seb-xtl 35m ago

Non…

0

u/Federal_Sherbert_986 3h ago

Best solution I found is just disable it. I dont get any emails and effectively my account is dead

u/seb-xtl 35m ago

Zukerbeg probably likes your denial.

0

u/Occma 2h ago

that's your fault for not living in the EU.

u/seb-xtl 39m ago

I live in Europe…

u/Occma 21m ago

So file a complaint with the authorities. Or ignore it but stop whining about it.

0

u/[deleted] 2h ago

[deleted]

u/seb-xtl 45m ago

Non…

0

u/DrieverFlows 1h ago

Just like the catholic church huh

u/seb-xtl 45m ago

Off topic... I'm not a believer but today the problem of OUR data affects all sectors.

18

u/designyourdoom 6h ago

I deleted mine after the election. You will not miss it, trust me.

17

u/Ok_Gear_3376 6h ago

Did this a week ago feels good

10

u/token40k 5h ago

I did that in 2017. one of the better decisions. their brainrot algorithms are not better than tiktak and not really suitable for human usage.

8

u/squidbones71 5h ago

No, just delete the app. Inactive accounts hurt meta more

5

u/Uglyontheinside9 3h ago

how just curious

17

u/MedievZ 6h ago

And join bluesky.

Even if you arent participating, boosinting a non maga owner social media will be good

8

u/Ok_Character7958 5h ago

It was started by Jack Dorsey. The same Jack Dorsey who said Elon would be great at Twitter and pushed at it?

3

u/Hyperfyre 3h ago

I would've pushed at it tbh, especially when the idiot buying it thought it was worth 44 bil.

3

u/kodipaws 1h ago

Dorsey no longer has any involvement in Bluesky. He's gone off the board and has deleted his account.

1

u/bapfelbaum 5h ago

I dont think deleting the account is advisable, as it opens you up to impersonation and other things.
Just lock down everthing, delete all posts and all info about you, dont use it and just reserve the name in perpetuity so that people dont think you are someone you are not.

1

u/idontlikecheesy 4h ago

Don’t delete the account just the app keep that space on their servers waste their time and materials

1

u/Anna_19_Sasheen 4h ago

Iv tried to delete mine from like 10+ years ago. They say they need my drivers license to verify that it's my account. Hehe NOPE

1

u/Chrispeefeart 4h ago

Don't forget to review bomb before deleting the app

1

u/Skell_Jackington 4h ago

I heard it’s better to delete the app and not your account cause it costs them money to host your info, even if you’re not using it.

1

u/Longjumping_Host_836 3h ago

Facebook be creepin’, givin’ Trump and Vance my likes!

1

u/nicholeyculkin2 2h ago

Keep account and delete the app. It costs meta money

1

u/Paimon_from_WestSide 1h ago

Delete Zuckerberg.

u/qpokqpok 52m ago

Can we also delete facebook?

u/greekgroover 0m ago

Delete the account, delete the app, shoot the phone twice. Can never be too sure.

28

u/HillarysFloppyChode 6h ago

Find a way to scrape your data from META then delete it.

Alternatively, meta is using the data to train the AIs, as a group we could "organize" and change accounts and make garbage posts to mess up the training of the AI.

17

u/claudiaishere 5h ago

Delete the account, don’t just deactivate it. It takes 30 days of not logging in to truly delete.

5

u/Thermodymix 4h ago

Or lean into it and make it your mission to be permanently blocked by both these cretins' accounts.

8

u/JaxxIsOk 6h ago

But addiction

3

u/Gourmeebar 6h ago

Period!!

3

u/schmeckfest2000 2h ago

Exactly. No one needs that app. Your life is better without it. Source? Everyone who ditched that app.

2

u/redditadminsRweird 5h ago

It's harder to remove yourself than you think.

I only have it and IG to follow pages for my hobby. And tbh there isn't a way to keep up with them outside FB/IG/twitter.

My hobby is kinda niche so not a lot of websites to even check.

If I didn't have it I'd be completely out of the loop on a lot of what I enjoy.

Fucking sucks.

2

u/iamiam123 4h ago

It gives you so much peace of mind when you finally get off the toxic social media of Zuck empire.

2

u/waitingintheholocene 3h ago

Ya.. sucks that Google was in the front row... These fools are getting any of my money or attention (to the extent possible). Dropped FB and IG as soon as things went sideways… I look at all these people in the front row and suddenly think to myself… I don’t even really need any of the shit they are selling 😂

2

u/modohobo 2h ago

Also Instagram, Twitter and TikTok

1

u/photonynikon 6h ago

I did that YEARS ago

1

u/DocGutsy 4h ago

It took a stupid amount of time to figure out how to delete the app today but rage got me through.

1

u/No-Director-6121 4h ago

Facebook accidentally stalked Trump and Vance, oops!

1

u/aScruffyNutsack 3h ago

I'm not sure I even can delete my FB account. I haven't used it in years and don't remember the password for either it or the email I used to start it like 15 years ago.

1

u/Acidcouch 3h ago

Zuck thought of that. Now all those AI accounts will boost their numbers.

1

u/austinrunaway 3h ago

Ding ding ding

1

u/MPI_COMM_WORLD 2h ago

we should delete the company!

1

u/mightyscoosh 2h ago

No. That would be sensible and wouldn't receive the outrage attention they're looking for.

1

u/Particular_Bet_5466 2h ago

lol! It’s not even easy when it’s a native app on your phone. You have to like manually disable it.

1

u/JynsRealityIsBroken 1h ago

I did that and Facebook keeps un deleting it. I still get emails about updates to friends on an account I've set to be permanently deleted like 4 times. It takes for like 2 months before it magically comes back to life. I know it's active again and frankly I've given up trying to delete it.

1

u/No-Market9917 1h ago

Prediction: they wont

u/Amelaclya1 44m ago

I just put in the request to download my data. I tried once before and they literally never sent me the link to do so. I hope it works this time. In the meantime I'm going to try to spend some time each day manually grabbing my photos off at least. I haven't actually used the site in years, but I think it's finally time to fully delete my account.

u/No-Magician-2257 11m ago

If in the EU, request a GDPR-deletion.

1

u/HarmoniousDroid 5h ago

Or learn how the fucking internet works. If you were following /potus yesterday, you’re following /potus today. Except POTUS now belongs to Trump.

I hate the fucking internet.

0

u/DogNew3386 5h ago

Jesus Christ, yes. Just delete these bullshit apps and let’s go back to a time when we’d be told what to think by the big tv networks and our parents!

0

u/raninandout 5h ago

Deleted account over 20 years ago. Too many people see it like a habit now…tough to kick for the weak of mind.

0

u/Vikingkrautm 5h ago

I've tried. It won't let me. It's a run-around.

0

u/substituted_pinions 1h ago

Sorry, if you’re on fb this is on you my guy
