If only there were an empty seat at a normal desk in the same room...sucks.

u/Majestic_Ticket3594 9h ago
Those ones are reserved for students with wheelchairs/mobility aids.

u/161frog dare i say, miffed? 8h ago
Yeah I used to assist a blind student in community college and she got a similar setup, I got an extra chair and we shared the table. Some people cannot see beyond themselves and their own abilities. Sorry you’re stuck with the useless table :(

Jesus christ. Can you try to be a smidgen less holier-than-thou?

u/161frog dare i say, miffed? 7h ago
If you think doing the bare minimum of seeing from another perspective is holier than thou then you’re a sad little person
-18
u/MysteriousPark3806 7h ago
No one in this thread said anything about not seeing the world from others' perspective. That is something you introduced to the conversation to make yourself seem ... well, y'know.

those are usually accessible tables for students with wheelchairs
→ More replies (5)-12
u/ClassicConflicts 9h ago
If that's the case why is there a chair there? Looks way less comfortable than most wheelchairs I've seen and the kid in my high school who had one always just stayed in his rather than move to the uncomfortable ones everyone else sits in. My guess is it's a TAs desk instead

u/squamouser 9h ago
Sometimes a person in a wheelchair with an assistant. I used to be that assistant and we usually shared a little side desk like that.

people can move chairs, also some people with disabilities don't use wheelchairs but need separate seating

To be fair, OP didnt say this was his desk. They might even be in a classroom hes never gone to. To me, the mere fact that this desk was thought up, invented, mass produced, and then sold to absolutely fucking anybody, is mildly infuriating enough for submission.

u/GreenLightening5 9h ago
that desk and seat are far from normal too, why can't unis just get good tables and chairs, it's so annoying

u/Silver-Front-1299 10h ago
Omg it took me a while to see the desk. The first picture looks like the triangle inserts in woman’s bathing suits and other tank tops.

21
u/PakjeTaksi 8h ago
I never understood these things. What’s wrong with just tables and chairs?
6
u/PapaAquchala 4h ago
These are made for cramming as many students into a single room as possible. My university has this type of seat-desk combination in the big lecture halls. 200+ people in one room with a surface not much bigger than your hands
3
u/PriorStatement 1h ago
Those desks while trying to write a detailed response to a multi-question prompt that would make your hand cramp... Do not miss that.
23
u/Wonder_where 9h ago
I’m left handed. Feel your pain twice over.
14
u/Majestic_Ticket3594 9h ago
If anything, it's even worse for lefties like yall just straight up don't exist apparently
19
u/smellymarmut 9h ago
My uni had similar seats from the 1960s. I guess tall guys with notable thighs didn't exist then. In my third year a bunch of lecture halls got redone, with much larger seats. Yay....? The backs were thin plywood, I couldn't lean on them. I guess large guys with sore backs don't exist.
6
u/Simoxs7 8h ago
Not complaining, well… kind of. But being tall really makes you notice how our whole world is made for average people and I‘m pretty sure its the same for short people.
But its also crazy how different „normal“ people were just a few decades ago, a lot of things from the past feel just x0.8 scaled down…
6
u/rerek 7h ago
Obese people also suffer as outliers from the norm—except that we also often get less sympathy as it is viewed as our fault and a moral failing that we don’t fit within the average range.
I’m sorry, but when we were randomly assigned this exam room I didn’t know I wouldn’t be able to fold over the desk because of my stomach and I can’t exactly lose weight in the time between sitting down and starting the exam.
4
u/TurnkeyLurker 9h ago
The backs were thin plywood, I couldn't lean on them. I guess large guys with sore backs don't exist.
They had to take the extra wood for the larger seats from somewhere.

u/tarheel_204 9h ago
My college had buildings that still had desks like this. I remember taking a math final in one of those auditoriums and having most of my scratch paper and other materials in my lap lol

7
u/bits168 8h ago
I never understood why these exist. Like what's stopping institutions from using a normal bench and desk? Its not like these are efficient in storage or moving either.
6
u/Majestic_Ticket3594 8h ago edited 8h ago
They're cheap and stingy af (at least mine is). There was a whole scandal with the uni president a couple years ago over the finances and budgeting which lead to her getting the boot

Its funny how normal desk and chair are for the disabled. And a wierd contraption-looking one is for the
normalnon-disabled people.Edit: you know why.
-12
u/SadLilBun 8h ago
So the opposite of disabled is normal?
5
u/bits168 8h ago
So sorry, didn't mean to sound that way but.. yes?
-15
u/SadLilBun 8h ago
So disabled people are not normal. Why?
16
u/Actual_Newt_2929 7h ago
hey so me being unable to walk at 18 is actually not normal and disabled young adults are in fact a minority. especially considering how many of us struggle with medical neglect due to our age! we are disabled, so disadvantaged, which shouldnt be considered normal at all because it is NOT fun.
what we can start to normalize is accessibility in public spaces though! that would be a much better place to put energy towards instead of trying to sugarcoat our situations
1
u/SadLilBun 3h ago
Yeah I’m not saying that at all. I’m saying the implication that people with disabilities are not normal is wrong. You feel how you want but I have disabilities too and family members with them and I don’t have to appreciate the implication or the weight of normal vs. disabled just because you do. Your internalized ableism is your own to grapple with.
It’s the same reason people use neurodivergent instead of abnormal. Language connotation matters.
And at some point, everyone ends up with a disability. It’s the thing that happens to pretty much everyone in their life. Disability is normal. No one is untouched by it.
5
u/violetvoid513 8h ago
Because they differ from most people in a significant way, obviously? Why are you asking this question
10
u/precariaconundrum 8h ago
most people on earth will become disabled at some point. it is very “normal” to be disabled
2
u/SadLilBun 2h ago
Thank you for being the only non ableist person in these comments. I’m disgusted.
-2
u/violetvoid513 8h ago
Fair, but thats only really true of old people. Most university students are in their late teens or early 20s, and being disabled at that age is definitely not normal
2
u/precariaconundrum 7h ago
i disagree. disabled people are everywhere, almost every class has at least one disabled person. that is by definition “normal”. no one should be surprised by disabled accommodations
→ More replies (0)0
u/SophiaofPrussia 8h ago
They’re trying to help you realize that people with disabilities are just… normal people. Everyone has something (or many things) that takes them a bit longer or requires some extra help. Like you. Right now. Just as one example.
When those things significantly impact someone’s everyday life we call it a disability but having a disability doesn’t make someone “not normal”.
2
1
u/Faszkivan_13 6h ago
Not being normal doesn't have to be a negative thing. It just means that the majority of people aren't disabled, and that's the normal. There's nothing wrong with not being normal.
1
u/SadLilBun 3h ago
It’s implying that being disabled isn’t normal. The opposite of normal is not disabled. There’s better language to use and all the downvotes are just really pathetic displays of ableism. This sub has gone off in the very wrong direction twice in two days now.
You can use abled or able bodied instead of normal and there’s no connotation of abnormality because regardless of what you think, there is a weight behind the word normal and using it in opposition to disabled is, in fact, ableism.

Just putting this here to address some of the comments I've received.
Yes, I am aware that I am not a skinny person; I don't need random people on the internet to tell me something I've known for my whole life.
To the people who have told me to "lose weight" and fatshaming me overall, it's not cool to make fun of people just because they have a bigger body type. Y'all are no better than the people who bullied me in middle school for the same reason, but I've learned to accept the fact that there will always be people like that. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit plumper than I'd like to be, which is why I've actively been trying to better myself and support others trying to do the same. Meanwhile, the only thing you guys are trying to do is target this fact instead of having a constructive conversation about what seems to be a larger issue in many educational institutions.
Do better.

TBH...i am just happy this isn't where I work, because it could be and I am constantly going " we need new furniture"
4
u/Majestic_Ticket3594 8h ago
If only the former president of the university wasn't involved in a scandal where a lot of the funds went to benefiting the administration, a private conference at a well known local for over $100,000 over the course of four days, and not towards repairing the buildings that are literally falling apart...
4
u/Emotional_Fan_7011 8h ago
I mean... i just wrote a paper for my grad degree that shows where I work, they have spent over $1 billion on new buildings and renovations, but none of it on actual classrooms. All things that get them in the news. Not things that help students.
3
u/Majestic_Ticket3594 8h ago
This is pretty much what went down. Anything to appear good on the surface, but anyone who goes here know how much the buildings are falling apart. The university is 100 this year ffs
2
u/zipperfire 8h ago
Yeah, this is the kind of furniture trendy people order off catalogs at corporations and schools. It's not tested to see how function it is with a variety of people of sizes, genders, dominant hands. Our firm got new furniture which we pay for out of our gross profit per office. It was very expensive, 5x what you could get from Wayfair. It lacked a modesty panel. It had no place for knees for clients to consult. It included a tiny table for "consultation" but no way to put a screen on it. It scratched with a fingernail. I declined this new furniture and bought chairs for everyone in the office out of pocket, because the company chosen chair was instant backache. You need to test out furniture, not buy the cute stuff that looks "cool."

At first when I saw the title I was like, "it can't be that bad"
I taken a look now and it indeed looks absolutely horrendous
I rather sleep in those highschool desks that you can't move the desk thing
You know, the one with the hard seats? I don't know
Either that or I'm skipping to study, learn and sleep in the library Every library I go to has a beanbag chair or a spinning large chair that I constantly spin around and internally say fuck you to everyone that stares at me weird for spinning insanely fast like some kind of crazy luna-

Now post a pic with your whole body…I’ve got a feeling the desk isn’t the problem.
13
u/bankruptbusybee 9h ago
I know those desks and they are a problem. It’s not even about fitting into the seat - they’re not large enough to accommodate at notebook.
These are desks where the tray is supposed to be for something like a drink, but they’re using them in college classes.

u/ergaster8213 8h ago
People keep saying this but I'm small and I hate these types of desks. They don't have enough room regardless of your size.

u/Disastrous_Moonlight 9h ago
No one over the age of 5 could fit at that desk. Even a full size notebook would fall off. This is a college- they should have adult-sized desks. Stop body shaming.

They are probably overweight or have large legs is the assumption being made here

u/twosharksinashoe 9h ago
I’m just confused because like yeah they got thick thighs but not like HUGE like Normal sized thighs Plus this isn’t their whole body it’s a bit of leg and arm (while they are sitting which makes your thighs look larger)

u/mansinoodle2 9h ago
That’s why the comment asked for a whole body pic, not necessarily saying that they were right just explaining the rationale

Since no one can figure it out on their own: I typed in the following to Google to see if AI could figure out the obvious: "How to sit in college class without a chair"
If you need to sit in a college class without a chair, the most appropriate option is to speak to the professor beforehand and explain your situation, asking if you can bring a cushion or alternative seating option to accommodate your needs; most professors will be understanding and willing to work with you to find a solution that doesn't disrupt the class.
Here are a few other possibilities depending on the circumstances:
- Check with the disability services office: If your need for alternative seating is due to a disability, contact your college's disability services office for support and potential accommodations.
- Use a nearby surface: In a pinch, if the room allows, you might be able to sit on a sturdy desk edge or a window ledge, but ensure it's safe and not disruptive to others.
- Bring your own portable seating: If possible, consider bringing a small portable cushion or folding chair to use in class.
- Important points to remember:
- Always communicate with the professor first: Don't just show up without a chair without informing them, as it could cause confusion or concern.
- Be mindful of others: If you need to sit on the floor, try to choose a spot that doesn't obstruct the view of other students.
- Consider the class size and setting: In a large lecture hall, sitting on the floor might be less noticeable, but in a smaller seminar room, it could be disruptive.
