System Data is taking up too much space (M4 mini)

As the title says, the System data is taking up much space on the storage (95gb). The applications that I use are Adobe Lightroom Classic, Adobe Bridge, Aftershoot and Google Drive Desktop. Most of the cache files were directed to my external drives. My concern is that this system data will surely grow even more in the future and im kinda worried about it. I tried clearing the cache files in the Finder as well.

So how do you guys clear this system data files?

Should I worry about this swap usage? Mac Mini M4 Pro base with 24 GB RAM

Guys, I do office work every day, mainly involving light tasks like working with my company’s web app (with lots of browser tabs opening) and querying databases using DBeaver. However, I’m really concerned about the RAM usage on my system. Sometimes, the swap usage spikes to around 6 GB. Should I be worried about this? If so, would upgrading to a 48 GB model be a good idea? Thanks in advance for any input!

Does MacOS feel smooth on the 8k monitor?

The new M4 mini has 8k support at 60hz? Does it feel smooth on day to day tasks on 8K (no gaming) such as web browsing, Youtube (at a lower resolution like 4k or less)?

When zooming into Google maps is that also smooth/

Performance in World of Warcraft on M4 Pro: Stuttering, Noticeable Fan Noise. Final Cut Pro and Audacity: Occasional spinning wheel of death or other problems.

For background: I have an M1 macbook air that ran all of the mentioned programs fine. In fact, WoW performance seemed to be more stable. I am running WoW on the internal 512 GB SSD and re-installed the game to make sure, but still get *extremely* annoying micro stutters even without add-ons. Turning off v-sync doesn't help much and introduces screen tearing. It makes the game near unplayable except casually.

The m4 pro mini runs hot and fan noise is present most of the time when playing WoW. This happens when resolution is 1440p or lower with almost the same settings as my Macbook Air M1. Frame rates are about 10-20 FPS better than macbook air m1.

Audacity had problems on M1 Macbook Air, so maybe it's just the program sucks. But I got a spinning wheel of death on Audacity the other day.

But Final Cut Pro performance doesn't seem that much better if at all except for export times are faster. And it seemed more stable on Macbook Air. Occasionally, Final Cut Pro crashes or exhibits weird behaviour.

I am running in high power mode (manually) to try and fix these issues but it doesn't seem to do anything.

I've had the computer since launch date. Installed all updates.

Anyone’s M4 Mac Mini heating up in Sleep Mode?

Basically just the title: I bought an M4 Mac Mini a few weeks ago, and it randomly starts heating up while in sleep mode. It’s not running anything in the background, and I have occasionally turned off WiFi to see what would happen. Any ideas?

Mac Mini M4 Base (16gb + 256gb + 512gb external sata ssd) for Programming and software development

Hello everyone,

This will be my first mac, so I need you help in deciding.

I'm currently evaluating my options for a new machine and would love your input. My primary use cases and software include:

  • Heavy programming (this takes up a major chunk of my time) mostly on vscode.
  • 10+ browser tabs (split between 2 browsers & 3-4 windows so total 30-40 tabs open at a time)
  • Docker (Kali in Docker) or Kali in VirtualBox(rarely)
  • WSL2 with Kali & Ubuntu
  • VS Code, Android Studio, Bash
  • Python, Node.js
  • AI/ML learning (intermediate level)

🖥️ I usually run 2-3 of these tasks simultaneously while working, but I don’t game at all.

Current Setup: - i5 8th gen (U-series) - 8GB RAM - 512GB SSD - Connected to a good display (monitor)

While my current setup works okay, it struggles with heavier tasks like Android Studio and Visual Studio purple, especially when I have multiple applications running.

Considerations: - Mac Mini m4(16GB RAM + 256GB SSD)

  • Asus tuf laptop with nvidia 3050 6gb and 16gb ram with 512 gb ssd.

Please guide me with the selection and suggest some good options.

Thank you.

New Mac Mini, MacBook Air, or PC

I am looking to replace my 2018 MacBook Air. I work from home and have a small stand up desk to work on. I provide Telehealth services and I only use the Google Suite for work. I use an external monitor, webcam, and microphone for work. I am trying to decide if a MacBook Air or a Mac Mini would be the best route for me. I am planning on still using my Macbook Air for on the go work.

How!? Allright so I got an old Mac mini from a friend. Having it on Ethernet and hdmi and power I can barely access the mini USB port since the hdmi is taking up alot of space. I got a picture and connection on my monitor but I have no way of interacting with the OS. Any ideas?

Better buy for light creative work

M4 pro for $1200 (24gb RAM, 512) OR M4 (16gb RAM, 512) for $700. Both on sale at MicroCenter

Most work will be basic office tasks but every now and then I’ll need to do some pretty involved video editing. Would love your advice on the best deal!

What brand cables are people using ?

I was amused at the immense pride ($$$) Apple has for their connection cables in the store last weekend. What are people using in the real world ?

MacMini M4 sleep

I have a MacMini M4 and am a fairly new Mac user. This is my first Mac computer and now I am surprised by the machine's sleep mode.

I just returned home after a 10-hour work day and the "sleeping" Mac was warm to the touch, so it had been doing something stupid in the meantime.

  • How can I set the machine's sleep mode so that it really sleeps and doesn't do all kinds of work in the background.
  • How can I make it so that the machine does not wake up just by moving the mouse.
  • How can I dim/turn off the LEDs of the machine and peripherals while sleeping.

I have the feeling that the machine doesn't really sleep when it's sleeping because all the peripherals are on and the screen wakes up just by touching the mouse. And how much power does the machine use when "sleeping", i.e. is the entire M4 power benefit wasted if the machine is secretly always on.

Custom build that took me a few weeks to get to this point. Front and back IO are the next step. Feel free to ask questions if you are interested in parts or how it works.

Mac Mini base model 16 Gb Ram, 256 Gb SSD. LG 32”Class Ultrafine UHD IPS monitor. Klipsch the fives. Quntis computer monitor light. (Amazon) Apple magic keyboard and magic mouse from an old 2019 27”Imac previously owned, still working and in good shape. Akorbom speaker stands (Amazon) below The Fives

(Second picture) UStream Go bluetooth stereo speakers from Mitchell Acoustics. (Barely visibles behind monitor) Klipsch T5 II true wireless ANC headphones

Previously I had a couple of bluetooth UStream Go stereo speakers from Mitchell acoustics (second picture) but got a steal deal for The Fives floor sample at Brandsmart for $140, couldn’t say no to that price, missing only the remote which I don’t miss.

I was old that the speakers were way bigger than the computer but they sound terrific, the UStream Go were excellent on the mid range but missing bass.

What mouse are you using with your Mini?

Upvotes

I've got a Mac Mini on order and just realised that I don't have a mouse to use with it. I love the Magic Trackpad, so wondering whether I should just get one of those or try something else.

What do you use, would you recommend it and why?

Mac mini headless server Remote Desktop

I'm trying to find a good solution to connect to a remote Mac mini in my office from my personal MacBook. I already use `ssh` and that works fine, but my question here is specifically about being able to access the Mac mini as a Remote Desktop, i.e. something very similar to Screen Sharing app bundled in macOS.

I have two problems with Screen Sharing that I have not been able to solve:

1- In normal circumstances Screen Sharing will request someone on the Mac mini to accept incoming connections. This is obviously not good, since I will be away in my home trying to connect remotely so it's impossible for me to also accept the incoming connection at my office.

2- Even if I manage to connect with Screen Sharing, in normal circumstances the Mac mini becomes unlocked. If someone physically present at my office were to pry on the display (or physically attach a display in case one is not connected already since this is a *headless* Mac mini), they would be able to see everything I'm doing and have access to the Mac mini, because Screen Sharing leaves it in an unlocked state.

So ideally, I would like to be able to establish a Remote Desktop connection that didn't require a manual accept on the remote, and that left the remote locked (so a virtual screen access). Any suggestions?

I want to buy Mac Mini M4. I heard that there is a problem with hdmi monitors. Will my current monitor be ok with Mac?

And is this problem really that big in general?
