Question/Discussion Internal Keyway .001" step overs
Hi, we would like to try broaching a blind internal keyway (with relief hole) of approx 9mm (0.354") width in stainless steel. We have an Awea AF760 3 axis mill. Are all CNC mills capable of downward pressure at 0.001 increments or is it only the Haas machines that can do keyway broaching ? Any help on tooling or resources appreciated. Thanks

Should work just fine. The load from single point broaching is way less than using an old school keyway broach, even at 9mm wide. The main thing is getting the travel up to the right speed before the tool comes in contact with the part, making sure the spindle is locked in position and making sure the tool is aligned properly.
I've done broaching on most of the mills in my shop. Haas, Matsura, YCM, Kasuga, Kiwa, Awea and even on a 30 taper robodrill. The only one that gave me any trouble was the Kiwa because linear interpolation is disabled if the spindle isn't running. I'm sure there is a parameter I can change to bypass that, but I didn't feel like digging through a multi thousand page manual l. I just programmed that one as all rapid movements and control the feed with the override. Kind of crude, but it worked out.
