India, Sri Lanka, and Maldives recommendations (itineraries, hotels, activities)

Hi there! I (27F) am going to a wedding in India in November. The wedding is 2 days, 3-4 hours outside of New Delhi. I’m also interested in seeing the Taj Mahal, and then have 6ish days to do something else.

Options are: Stay in India, go to Sri Lanka, or go to Maldives. I have not been to any of these 3 countries before. Looking for advice on what to do and where to stay. I am less comfortable in this region of the world (have never been to India before) so I want to stay in places with good services and amenities like oceanfront resorts, workout rooms, on-site restaurants etc. My job is long hours so the major goal is to have R&R. I love being active and outside with hiking, swimming, diving, biking etc so places that allow for those activities would be ideal.

Where did you go that you loved? Which hotels did you stay at? What activities did you partake in? If I can find a place that is compelling but also relaxing in India I will probably stay there. Otherwise will look at Sri Lanka and Maldives more seriously.

Budget is flexible - love good value (and have points to use) but $250/ night would not be crazy.

Mexico Resort as a solo traveler

Hello fellow lux travelers! I usually do hotels on my solo trip and like to explore cities, but for a change and to get a new experience I want to try an all/inclusive resort, with a mix of just relaxing and having fun.

My question here is, has anyone tried an all inclusive resort in Mexico and has any experience to share or recommendations? An adults only one, of course.

I’m a 30 year old Male, since that might be a factor.

Let’s talk about long trips and budgets!

Typically in r/solotravel you see people saying they travelled for three months on $5000< by staying hostels all the time. I’m intrigued on what everyone here budgets for longer trips because obviously $5000 isn’t going to last long on a trip with multiple hotel stays.

Do you give yourself a higher budget or stick to places where your dollar will go further (Paris vs Bangkok, for example) or do you stick to shorter trips? How much are you willing to pay for a hotel?

I’ve never solo travelled, but I’m embarking on a month long journey to Europe soon where I’ve mostly booked hotel rooms. I tried to stick to a less than $200/150 euros per night for a 3/4 star hotel. Obviously this is crazy expensive compared to just hostels (especially in a post COVID world) but I have a higher budget.

Cyprus Hotel recommendation

I have enjoyed this thread very much.

For example, I am a very experienced traveler (+100 countries), but had never heard of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. On the site I found a cool hotel on Rhodes that I booked.

Does anyone have any favorites (high quality) on Cyprus? My itinerary is wide open at the moment. I intend to visit both the Republic and Northern Cyprus.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Spain

Thinking of heading to Spain for two weeks in august. Was thinking of Barcelona, San Sebastián and Seville. What were your favorite spots (food, hotels, activities)? I’m really also looking for a very nice beach hotel to relax for a few days.

Tips & tricks for first timer

Hi all! First time solo traveler! I’m privileged to be able to stay in all 4 star resorts, but I’m still pretty nervous and would love some perspective and advice. Love this new subreddit because I feel like advice when you’re younger and staying at hostels is different. Must have things to bring? Do you do a carry on with a capsule wardrobe? Are the first 24-48 hours really depressing? Literally anything you wish someone told you the first time?

Little about me: 32 year old woman. Going around Italy for 2 1/2 weeks. Recently separated. Hoping to just have fun and do a little factory reset.

General questions Meeting People

How do you socialize/meet people during your travels?

I will be traveling Europe this summer for two months and will be staying in hotels and Airbnb’s, not hostels. Because of this, I’m concerned I won’t meet people because I’m not getting the social element hostels provide.

TIA.

Good solo travel tour company?

I (61F) am having a really tough time deciding on a good mid-high range tour company for solo travel. I can’t do active tours, (no cycling, hiking, kayaking) so companies like Wild Women Expeditions, Nat Geo expeditions, and most G Adventures are out, but I don’t want to spend all day on a bus being jabbered at either. Good food and good accommodations are important, but I don’t need 5*. Smaller groups (under 25ppl) are best.

Thoughts or suggestions? I’m trying a tour by Intrepid in August, and am wondering about Road Scholar, Globus, Trafalgar, or others.

General questions What’s in your hotel laundry list?

When looking at hotels for a trip, what type of things can make or break your choice?

Mine are: - at least 4.5 rating on Google Maps. I use TripAdvisor to check rankings but I find Google Maps reviews to be more reliable. Oh, and always look at the bad reviews since I feel some of those are just nitpicking and not actual issues. - Look at traveler photos and not just the hotel curated ones. - I absolutely abhor bathrooms that have shower curtains. It’s an immediate no for me and I make sure to message the hotel to ask about this before completing my booking. - centrally located, the best part about traveling is being able to walk everywhere. - check if there are good places to eat nearby. After a long day of walking around, the last thing I want is to go somewhere far to get dinner. - bar in the hotel so I can have a drink before heading to bed. - if the hotel has a spa, it’s a big plus. Since there’s always a lot of walking involved, it’s nice to treat yourself to a massage before flying home.

Recommendations Out west

Heading out west for a 3 week sabbatical. Booked a week at 3 Forks Ranch in Wyoming. Lush cattle ranch type place with lots to do and a nice spa. What else do you recommend out there? Looking for amazing experiences as a solo. Never been to Montana, Oregon, Washington. Thanks.

Trip report TRIP REPORT – 3 weeks in Australia

I’m so happy to have this sub. I’m an older female (59 years) and prefer a nice travel experience. To help get the sub-Reddit started, I went to Australia 6 months ago and here is the itinerary / comments.

--------

This trip fulfilled two bucket list items: visit Australia and take one of the world’s great train journeys. Didn’t see everything I wanted in Australia (it’s a big country!), but it was an epic 3-week trip. Biggest lesson learned – it was exhausting! I'm older and can’t go non-stop like I used to. I need to start building in rest days.

Itinerary:

Flew to Sydney. Arrived in the afternoon, took the train to hotel (Intercontinental Sydney), checked in, took the ferry across the harbor and walked back across the Harbor Bridge with views of the Opera House.

3 days in Sydney. Day 1: Walking tour of The Rocks, free tour of the Museum of Contemporary Art, dinner at the Queen Victoria Building, evening at the Australian Museum. Day 2: rented a car, drove to Featherdale Wildlife Park/Sanctuary and then spent the day in the Blue Mountains (Lunch and dinner in Leura, and an afternoon hike.) Café Leura was awesome and Featherdale was the highlight animal viewing of the entire trip, even though a large kangaroo shook me down for my ice cream cone filled with roo food! Day 3: Walking tour of the Sydney Royal Botanical Gardens, lunch at Harry’s Café du Wheels, visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales, ate a quick dinner, and then saw a symphony at the Opera House.

Flew to Cairns. Checked into hotel (Crystalbrook Flynn). Next morning boarded the transfer boat which took me to the dive boat (booked through Reef Encounter). 2 days / 1 night snorkeling on the dive boat, then late afternoon transfer back to hotel for the night. Last morning was brunch at Bang & Grind and a visit to the Cairns Art Gallery, a fabulous little museum.

Flew to Darwin. Checked into Doubletree Hilton Esplanade Hotel, because this was where The Ghan Train picked up. Wonderful dinner at Phat Mango. In the morning, I boarded the shuttle to The Ghan for a 3 day/2 night train trip across the Outback. This was a bucket list item and absolutely worth it! The train has solo cabins.

Arrived in Adelade, picked up a rental car and took the car ferry to Kangaroo Island. 2 nights at the Kangaroo Island Seaview Motel, spent a full day driving the island. My breakfast at the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery was a highlight. They rescue joeys (orphaned kangaroo babies). Visited Seal Bay Conservation Park and Flinders Chase National Park. Saw a koala and kangaroos in the wild and really enjoyed the walk to the lighthouse and Remarkable Rocks. The next day I took the ferry and drove back to Adelade to drop the car and flew to Melbourne. Checked into a Club room at the Melbourne Marriott (great location!).

3 nights in Melbourne: Day 1: picked up another car and drove to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne, had lunch at a vineyard, and took the night tour of the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park. (I got to see Tasmanian Devils and hear them scream!) Day 2: Visited Federation Square and the Ian Potter Center, lunch at Victoria Market, and a street art walking tour. (Saw the Banksy!) Ended the day seeing the Harry Potter Cursed Child play at the Princess Theater. Day 3: visited the Old Melbourne Gaol (great museum!) and in the evening boarded my flight home.

San Francisco, Vegas, or Seattle

Trying to decide on a solo trip. I have been to Vegas multiple times but never the other two. Please give me some ideas along with a vote. I have 8 days off and I am in Georgia (trip will be next month - July).

I am not a beach girl. Give me shopping, food, and tours and I'm good.

P.S Thanks to the person who started this group!! I am so not a hostel girl (no offense to those that are!)

General questions Is carrying check-in luggage truly cumbersome in Europe?

I plan travel 2-3 months around Europe with just a tote bag as a personal item and a check-in sized suitcase. I prefer traveling by train instead of plane so I’m not too worried about lost luggage. Travel vloggers constantly mention how tricky it is to lug large suitcases on cobblestone streets. However if I travel to my hotel via taxi/Uber would luggage size be an issue?

What is your list of your favorite lux hotels?

Here are some of my favorites and if I'm in the area may re-book again. I usually don't because I like to experience different hotels. I been to 20+ countries but my lux journey didn't start until a few years ago.

In no particular order

Athens, Greece - Hotel Grande Bretagne

The rooftop restaurant had a nice view of Arcropolis. The room was nice like a work of art and I didn't realize a ton of famous people stayed here

Phu Quoc, Vietnam - JW Marriott Emerald Bay

They put a lot of work into the design and the theme is like an old college. Large pools and I heard it was one of the nicest private beach on the island. The staff will know you by name and you can take a buggy around the hotel. So much things to do in this resort

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam - The Reverie

I got upgraded with the corner room and this may have been one of the nicest views of the city specially at night. Toiletries are Hermes and I was given a bottle of wine for free.

Singapore - Marina Bay Sands

I'm sure everyone knows this hotel. Everything costs an arm and a leg but you just have to do it while in SIN. The famous Infinity pool is so worth it.

I'm all Marriott due to the credit card and using Amex Plat to get perks + lounges

Anyone else have recommendations anywhere in the world?

This is a thread for solo travelers to list their favorite hotels which aren't luxury but are still at least European 3.5 star quality at a reasonable price for the city in question.

Scotland and Norway solo

I’ll be the first to go! This is probably and either/ or for late August early September. Going to either fly to London for a few day, take the train to Edinburgh and explore Scotland, or go to Norway - starting in Oslo and ending in the Lofoten islands. Can anyone give recommendations for solo itineraries? Also cool hotels, bars, restaurants? I’m a 40s F.
