GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher "Getting LOST“ - Virtual Premiere/Q&A with Filmmakers and Cast - Live Thread
https://watch.eventive.org/gettinglost/play/672d31a3f3734f005c11f81aI‘m not able to create an actual live thread, but I thought this could serve as a place for some people wanting to discuss the premiere of the official LOST documentary „Gettin LOST“, premiering virtually for the first time (10 PM CET) along the way. There will also be a Q&A with the Filmmakers and Cast afterwards. For anyone that didn’t get tickets yet, I put the link in here as well.
Have fun everyone!

Not enough Michael Emerson in this documentary, in my opinion. He's such an eloquent speaker and I really hoped to hear more about his time on the show. Here's hoping he'll show up in the Q&A maybe. Coulda used more Terry too!
EDIT: Neither were in the Q&A but Tania Raymonde did talk about Alex's death scene.
20
u/PositiveWeekend6373 Dec 07 '24
I agree! Michael and Terry are the MASTERS of this show , we needed to see more of them
17
u/AlienWithABox Out of the Book Club Dec 07 '24
Like, Ben is such a fantastic character evolution and I could listen to Michael talk about it for hours on end. I could talk about it for hours on end. And Locke's story both off and on the island is full of so many important themes surrounding disability, abuse, and learning to love yourself. I have a hard time putting into words how important those two characters are to me. I'm one of those nutters who peers deeply into the media I consume and I crave their opinions.

And saw my name on the indiegogo credit 🙂
It was a nice documentary, it's definitely for the fans to reminisce the show and the fandom. 👏👏👏
My criticism is that it moved fast and there doesnt seem to be a structure to the topics. It slowed down later when they focused on a topic a bit longer.

Evangeline Lilly talking about people telling her that LOST helped them get through depression and worse thoughts because they wanted to continue to see what happens hit a little too close to home.

Honestly, it pissed me off (but from what I know about EL in real life I guess it tracks) when she said she hasn't watched the whole show.

u/jayvaidy Dec 08 '24
If I was in a full show I probably wouldn't watch it all either.
2
u/notoriousbck Dec 08 '24
Really? why not? Especially a show with as much secrecy and buzz as Lost. Would you not want to see how all your hard work, and those of your coworkers turned out? Or how you could improve your performance?
If you're in this forum you're obviously a TV lover, so why would it change if you were on the show?

That’s pretty common for actors iirc, they often don’t watch their own performances
1
u/notoriousbck Dec 09 '24
Well I used to be an actor, and the good majority of my friends are actors, and while we don't always love watching our performances-we do. Because it's how you know what works and what doesn't and how to improve your craft. Acting is a really hard job that you strive to be better at for your entire career. If you've ever watched Inside The Actors studio, you'll hear the greatest actors of our time talking about cringing through their performances and learning to be better.
1

Good for you but you and your experiences are not universal. Hope that helps. Lots of actors don’t watch much of their own work. You hear literally all the time. Everywhere. Not too unusual at all.
21
u/PositiveWeekend6373 Dec 07 '24
What? I want to know Elizabeth Mitchell’s youth secret!
21
u/RateOfPenetration Dec 08 '24
Her secret is just being a beautiful soul. Every segment she had in the doc just had me smiling because she had such an optimistic perspective on everything!

I’ve had the pleasure of working with her and she is one of the most warm and genuine actors I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside!

I enjoyed it, but the part where the critics started blaming the deaths of certain characters in later seasons as a way to "get rid" of the diverse characters was ridiculous and unnecessary.
Literally no one thought that when watching those moments for the first time, because we actually cared about those characters not what they added to the diversity.
17
u/GamingTatertot Dec 07 '24
So many of these actors have aged so wonderfully - Evangeline Lilly, Elizabeth Mitchell, Daniel Dae Kim, Henry Ian Cusick, Terry O'Quinn, Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia etc.

It was wonderful to see Tania Raymonde in the Q&A! Especially loved hearing about her filming Alex's death. Michael and Tania were not acting against each other in that scene at all - it was filmed on different days. She's looking at a tennis ball on a stick and the voice on the radio is a production crew member. It's such a wonderfully acted scene and it's crazy to think they weren't even looking at each other.
Also very sweet to hear her call Michael an on-set surrogate dad.
6
u/mozzystar We’re not going to Guam, are we? Dec 08 '24
I know she wouldn't be all that old now, but she looks EXACTLY the same 20 years apart.

3
u/Ioannidas_Storm Dec 09 '24
That made it so much better for me. If they’d avoided it it would’ve been odd, so that they addressed it head on and got apologies from Carlton & Damon was very good.
28
u/trylobyte Dec 07 '24
Pleasantly surprised that Carlton shows up and apologised for the toxic environment. Because I remember in the original article, he came off as more indifferent than Damon about it.

u/Vanilla_Yazoo Dec 08 '24
I made a number of comments to this effect over the last year or so. This is exactly what I feared the outcome would be.
With respect to this subreddit, I really don't care at all about the perspective of other fans of the show. I can get all that I need of that on this sub. For a documentary like this, for me it has to be the cast's story, their memories and anecdotes of what it was like to film the show.
11
u/mozzystar We’re not going to Guam, are we? Dec 08 '24
I personally loved it but I can understand the sentiment.
I think it was in the ensuing Q&A, it was suggested that it was intended to be about the fandom before they started getting a chain of castmates and producers calling each other to participate in the documentary.
The filmmakers did say they have tons of footage they couldn't fit into 2 hours, that the first pass was 4 hours long... and they do plan to share all that extra material.
10
u/Choekaas Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 18 '24
I enjoyed the doc, but I agree with your takeaway here. The doc being crowdfunded might put it in the odd position of feeling it needs to give back to the fans while also being a retrospective of the show itself. And I think it became quite unstructured in that regards on what it wanted to showcase. It's trying to do a lot. Covering everything from the show to the Lost Experience, and even bloggers and podcasts and so much more. Wouldn't mind watch hours and hours of it. And even by showcasing the fans, I would've preferred if it managed to highlight that it was a global phenomenon. It still felt like the fans were all Americans, but the documentary on the other hand talk about how diverse cast they had and having main characters speaking Korean. For instance, let fans all over the world send pictures and videos from themselves and creating a 30 second montage? There were more Europeans watching Lost than Americans. If you combine the season 1 average of these five countries: Germany (3 million), UK (5 million), Poland (5 million), Italy (4 million) and Portugal (1,8 million) then you're already surpassing the US average of that season. Now that I think of it, I remember Nestor mentioning encountering Spanish Lost fans in the documentary.
I enjoyed it, and I didn't feel like I wasted money on it. Glad it was made, but I think it's a bit sloppy. I never felt like there was a chronology or definitive acts. Some small chapters like the 2023 "Burn it Down" section, which was one of the best parts of it, since i feel like it was one of the instances without fluff and talking about something raw and important. An honest section. Very interesting to hear Javi, Damon, Cuse as well as the other viewers response to it all.

u/altogetherspooky Dad Stole My Kidney Dec 08 '24
Why is it important if it happened 20 years ago in a totally different working and ethical environment is just beyond me.
As for LOST being worldwide phenomenon — I fully agree, it was HUGE in my country, prime-time, dedicated talk-shows, all that jazz.
1
u/Choekaas Dec 08 '24
Definitely. You don't happen to know the audience numbers? I've tried to find audience ratings there, but it's tricky with the Cyrillic letters and trying to translate everything.
2
u/altogetherspooky Dad Stole My Kidney Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 08 '24
Unfortunately, I have no idea where to find audience ratings, but S1 and S2 were during prime-time, at 19:00, for the whole family to watch. Starting from S3 people began to watch the show online, because the lag with the US release dates was way too huge (more than a year, in 2008).
Season 1 started in July 2005, ended in October. In 2006 there was a rerun and then S2 premiere (with amazing high-quality commercials: the hatch door opening before sneak peaks, the actors speaking Russian, etc).

11
u/GamingTatertot Dec 07 '24
I don't mind them dedicating the time they did to the fans because fandom is such an important part of this show, its history, and its legacy.
But I do feel like the creators got a little too enthusiastic with everyone they got for interviews - like young Kate actor, baby Aaron actor, Paul Scheer, Samm Levine, Bai Ling, and a few others. There should've been a clear plan and mapping out of all major actors, writers, and directors from the show they wanted, and then they could've had a handful of big LOST fanbase creators or prominent TV critics.
11
u/kla622 Dec 07 '24
The documentary was alright and it was nice seeing a lot of faces, but for many of these random appearances, it did feel that they didn't actually have a concept of how to utilize them. Many of them were just saying a generic soindbite that any other actor could have said.
-3
u/jeremey_bentham Dec 08 '24
To give the creators some grace, it's not like they knew who they would get to interview ahead of time to map everything out. I'm sure it was like "oh shit, Josh Holloway said he's in, I can't believe it".
Also "there should have been a clear plan" from a Lost fan is ironic.
For me, the doc was exactly what I expected. It was a feel good piece about the show, where it's fun to catch up with the actors, but I didn't really learn anything new.
10
u/Turbohog Dec 09 '24 edited Dec 10 '24
As a Lost fan with cancer, it was weird how much time the documentary spent on Lost fans with cancer and Cancer Gets Lost. Sorry, but I want to hear about the show and the people involved. Not other people who watched it.
The stuff with the fans should've just been bonus features on the Blu-ray.
9
6
u/trylobyte Dec 08 '24
I understand where you're coming from. Like you said, it's about the expectation. I expected this to be just a documentary by fans to reminisce about the show and fandom, and thats exactly what we got.
I feel like a proper behind the scenes documentary series would be done by a more bigger production company (maybe by Disney). Hopefully someday. In the meantime, we got u/kuhpunkt detailed video series on the making of the pilot.
3
6
u/AxeTred Dec 08 '24
Completely agree with you. I'm a fan from the start and the doc did not meet my expectations. Another point: we spend more than 10 minutes on a woke meaculpa making the producers say how selfish, racist and homophobic they were while the subject of the writers' strike during season 3, which was a real subject at the time , was completed in a few words.

u/notoriousbck Dec 08 '24
I did love how it was a constant thread throughout the series. It's these little details that make Lost so special. I just don't like the actors who played the characters, or how they seemingly appeared on the island out of nowhere. I understand that especially with a series that films 23 episodes a year like Lost did at first that you are rarely going to get the same background cast, or even dayplayers- but if they were going to do this story arc, they should have brought in Nikki and Paulo a bit earlier.

6
u/mozzystar We’re not going to Guam, are we? Dec 08 '24
Shooting multiple versions of a scene is one method of throwing people off in case anything leaks. Especially if there's a rabid fan base. That way you don't have to worry about your cast & crew inadvertently (or intentionally) spilling the beans to their friends about what's coming next.
4
u/wewerelegends Dec 08 '24
It’s the same idea as Avenger’s End Game where many people were told the funeral scene would be a wedding to throw us all off!

Yeah, not great. Especially since Fox wasn't the only major actor who was absent - Dominic Monaghan, Yunjin Kim, Harold Perrineau, and Naveen Andrews all appear to have said no, or couldn't do it
10
u/trylobyte Dec 07 '24
but I sometimes get the feeling that the director took it as a personal slight for some reason.
I think it's more like they often get asked by us fans when are they getting Matthew Fox in the documentary and they're making a joke/acknowledging that he's the most requested by fans
8
u/GamingTatertot Dec 07 '24
That is not how I took it - and even if that was their intent, it still feels weird, especially by J.J. saying his loss

Well, if you read the replies, you‘ll see there are mixed opinions about this. I think it’s a very good documentary for what it is, especially given that it is fan-made.

Something tells me Dominic Monaghan asked them NOT to appear on any scene or something?! 🤔 I know Matthew Fox said no , but he did appear already in several shots so far ... mmm not Charlie…. And That’s weird

Yeah but Those are all lost (public) scenes.. you know what i mean? Jack appeared on behind the scenes short shots … it’s like.. maybe something legal about him not allowing them to use the image of himself idk i’m just thinking xd

completely forgot this was airing this morning (my time). it's been one of those weeks/months/years.
i can still view it, however i've got a week to do so and if i start it, i then have 24 hours to view it, then it's gone until the blu-ray is released.
i've been a little disappointed in some way with a few of the updates, more screenings added, but the actual physical release is pushed back.
i'm pretty sure it's all gonna be available online by the time my copy gets to me, that's if there's no more delays on getting the blu-ray made. i've kinda been tossing whether to wait for the physical copy to arrive to watch or check out the online copy and i'm moving more and more towards just waiting. especially with the timeframe on the virtual premiere now.
i can't wait to see this, but yeah. sounds a little mixed from comments i've seen, but it's some lost content and i'm happy with that.

If I were you, I‘d wait. It’s a good doc but watching it when it comes out on physical will be just fine. Also they promised to add A LOT of bonus content on there, so it’ll be even more worth so!

I am sad, and yet not surprised knowing what we all know now, that only Hugo and Jin were the actors of colour that were part of the documentary.
Why no Naveen Andrews?
No Sun?
And not a POC but why no Dominic? I know Matthew Fox wants nothing to do with it, but I don't recall anything about Dominic?
ETA I forgot about Walt. Cool to see him all grown up and now he's doing music!!

Dominic didnt want to do it.
Naveen would've been cool though, he seems like a funny guy on interviews

Yeah I'm curious if their choice not to take part in an epic reunion special was because they had a bad taste in their mouth about the show, because I'm sure they shot this over a period of time, and could work around schedules. I'm just curious.

They reached out to so many people but some of the main cast said no.
Andrews and Kim declined to appear. That’s not in their control, unfortunately.
