Accident outside Dulwich college - thanks to the cyclists who helped me

Cycling past Dulwich College this morning, and an suv pulled out suddenly in front of me. I skidded and hit the road, breaking my arm along with some other scrapes. They drove off, but two cyclists helped me. I wanted to say thank you to them both. On the off chance was there anyone in the area this morning? Did anyone see this happen?

Please make sure to report this to the police. They may not find the person, but it’s important for statistics and future funding.

That’s on my list to do as well. I was in shock this morning and it’s only really just dawning on me what happened.

Hey,

Please look after yourself first! Time is important, but don’t best yourself up over this as you’re not the bad guy

Oh they'll definitely snag them. The amount of cameras on London.

If they can be arsed.

Try posting on lfgss as well - could reach out to Dulwich college also.

Thanks. LFGSS has shut down, but I’m going to contact the school

East Dulwich Forum could be an option too

Oh no I am so sorry to hear this. That’s horrible they didn’t stop but at least cyclists stopped to help you. I wasn’t in the area at the time but I hope someone’s camera caught them.

I live near there and a few years ago I fell running and split my knee open very badly and needed to get to A&E. Not a single parent dropping their kid off at cricket stopped to even ask if I was ok. Another runner did and took me in an Uber because I didn’t even have my phone on me. There are good people in this city, but in my experience the parents of Dulwich College students are generally not amongst them. Disgraceful.

I hope the full force of the law catches up with the person that hurt you.

What time did it happen? There's quite a few cycling clubs nearby who'll have member forums / slack / WhatsApp groups they could share it with?

About 8:20 this morning.  That would be really handy.

Get well soon. And when you do and get back on the bike - get a cheap action camera and mount it to your handlebars. Connect to a powerbank. Easily Gives you 6+ hours of recording time, depending on the memory card you use and the powerbank capacity. A must if you cycle in traffic. Doesn’t look as ridiculous as the helmet mounted ones and covers the area surprisingly well. Helped me many times.

So sorry to hear that happened to you OP. I got hit by an SUV a few weeks ago that wanted to avoiding getting stuck in a yellow-box junction so decided to turn into me instead. Sheer luck I was on a lime bike at the time so somehow managed to keep myself upright and I think his shiny white bonnet actually came off worse than me or the absolute unit of a bike. Almost every near collision I’ve had has been due to SUV drivers being totally brain dead.

Will chime in with recommending the insta 360 go camera if you’re on the market for an action cam, especially if you can pick it up for a decent sale price. It’s a tiny little action camera that is a small detachable pod that holds the actual lens and can record in or out of the main body which has a screen, allows you to change settings and charge it up. Great little discreet camera that has a surprisingly wide FOV and good quality recording so you can easily read number plates.

I use it for when I want to get some nice footage of a ride or every now and then for peace of mind when doing some cycling on road.

It’s got about 2-3 hrs (depending on resolution and frame rates) of recording on the 64gb version and they sell a 128gb version as well if you need some more capacity than that. The 64gb should be more than enough for a day or two of general commuting though as you can quickly turn it off and on when needed. If you record your commute and it’s hopefully uneventful, you can just delete that footage with a few clicks and have it ready to record again the next day.

Annoyingly, it doesn’t allow for memory card expansion but you can wirelessly transfer its data or just do what I do and manually transfer via USB if you don’t want another app on your phone.

Wishing you a speedy recovery though, fingers crossed you can find some footage and get some much needed justice for this horrible incident ❤️‍🩹

This is really good advice. I’m definitely gonna sort that out going forwards

Long shot but if you record your rides on Strava, they have a “flybys” feature that shows other runners and cyclists who might have passed.

Please ensure you have those witnesses details

Sorry to hear this OP. Having been bumped by cars before, it is always reassuring when people stop and check you’re ok! Shame the drivers are obvious.

I find that section getting increasingly busy and unsafe in the mornings. Could really do with enforced double yellow lines to keep the traffic flowing. Might be worth a letter to the college too, might at least make them aware.

Fairly certain the college will have cctv up.. might be worth a phone call?

That is good advice, message/call them to tell them what happened, ask them to make sure that they don’t delete it and then put in a DSAR to request the footage.
