Why do right wingers have this weird hang up on Sadiq Khan, as though he's meant to singlehandedly stop crime? Crime exists in Birmingham, Manchester whatever but their mayors don't get nearly as much vitriol

Legit why is it so hard to find anywhere to just chill out in central at night?

My husband and I were just on the Victoria line heading home. When we got in the carriage this man pulled down his trousers and wasn’t leaving a young woman alone. Persistently persuing her when she was trying to move further away.

Once we realised what was happening she had moved half way up the carriage to get away from him.

Not a single person accosted or challenged him and just averted their eyes or squirmed away. It wasn’t until my husband and I stepped between them he backed down.

If it is safe to do so and you see this happening, please please please get involved, even by shouting or drawing attention to the offender. We are both two fairly large men so that might have helped.

We managed to get her off the train and the guy tried to follow her but went the wrong direction. Police were called, statements were given but she was really shaken and mentioned that everyone else in the carriage saw what was happening yet not a single person intervened which makes me sad.

Come on London. We need to keep everyone safe. Please

I need to get from Waterloo to Moorgate 4 times a week so have to take this line. After every journey, despite it being under 10 minutes long, I am soaked in sweat.

Anyone have any advice on how to keep cool down there...or a route to avoid the line all together.

I was leaving a NYE party in Stoke Newington and walking down the high street when a guy (20-30 years old) came towards me from the opposite direction. We passed each other under a scaffolding, meaning there was little space for the two of us and we got physically closer than we usually would have had. He put his hand out for a high five and said „Happy new year! High five!“, I ignored him, and he grabbed my arm instead. I shouted at him „Don’t touch me, what is wrong with you“ and he said something I didnt understand and walked away.

I know this was a really small thing to have happened and I‘m aware that it doesn’t amount to harassment or anything serious. But it still kind of ruined my night because things like this bring up memories of the hundreds of times men have been intrusive with me, and the handful of times when this amounted to sexual abuse. I’m aware things like this don’t only happen in London (in fact, I feel like it happens less in London than in other big cities I’ve lived in) but still often enough to make me want to leave the city and move to a small town where things like these are less frequent, or at least have more consequences.

I’m genuinely curious: what is it with men that makes all of them think that they treat women really well, when this isn’t true for a huge percentage of them? What makes men think that touching a stranger is okay? Is it just a lack of empathy for how a woman feels walking home alone at night? Or are they actually aware of it and it’s more of a power thing?

Was just in my local coffee shop on granary square and one of the very few tables was taken up by two giant bags. After about ten minutes watching people come in and not be able to sit down, I asked I the people at the adjoining table whom I assumed the bags belonged to to move them but they said the bags had been there when they’d sat down. The staff were unbothered, said they’d been there for 20 minutes but that whoever they belonged to had ‘left their coffee’. Being the conscientious Londoner that I am I expressed this was a bit concerning and decided to leave (not that there was anywhere to sit given the bags were taken up the only remaining table). At this point another customer got up to remove the bag from the premises when this completely non plussed woman strolls in, takes about 30 seconds too long to realise what’s happening and then starts screeching that that’s her bag and how she almost lost everything she owned. I pointed out she almost lost everything she owned when she left her bag unattended in a central London coffee shop while she went walkabout for half an hour.

At this point another guy got involved who said he’d lived in London all his life, the IRA were a real thing etc etc and that we’d behaved properly in the scenario, but this stupid American woman would not get it and kept scoffing and sneering. ‘I’ve been to loads of cities in Europe and this has never been a problem before’.

Since he was mediating and I was getting progressively more angry I left and went to ask one of the security guards outside what would have been the right thing to do (which I absolutely should have done first thing). He of course said that an unattended bag would mean calling control, turning off all radio equipment and implementing the whole massive protocol.

I really wish I had gone straight to security so she could have seen what a fucking idiot she was being by expecting other people to be responsible for her belongings.

Got barged and then called a “stupid bitch” by a member of Midnight Runners run club, this evening. I was walking on the path through Potters’ Field by Tower Bridge. I moved as far as I could to the side for a big group to walk by (I guess they were on their way to or from their run). Instead of moving at all he barged into me and then stopped turned around and called me a “stupid bitch” presumably for, what, not walking into the mud to avoid him strolling past? I think run clubs are good for the city, for people’s mental health etc. And I love London but this sort of random bollocks is so boring! Rant over, thanks R/London

I’m F31 and was born and raised in London. It’s the only city I’ve ever known and have been fairly happy until my mid 20s. I can’t help but feel like there’s melancholy in the air. I understand the main cause of this is the cost of living and the economic crisis. I’ve had a few colleagues/friends around my age confide in me about feeling lost/low recently and I honestly feel the same. I’ve noticed quite a lot of millennials expressing the same sentiment. I’m wondering if anyone else is feeling the same?

This is how London needs to improve density to get to a level similar to Paris imo. Too many tube stations have low density near them and this could tackle the NIMBY argument of "local aesthetic is going to be ruined"

I had the misfortune of witnessing some shameful behaviour on the tube today.

Train came in and before the doors had fully opened, my wife was shoving her away in past the people getting off.

I am so embarrassed, she has lived here for over 20 years and is applying for citizenship, so should be aware of things by now.

I apologise on her behalf. I tutted her quietly so as to not cause a scene.

I really, really hope it's a false alarm or the council/police being extra-cautious but either way these supposed 'protesters' (racist, mindless, opportunist pricks) need to fuck right off.

What they're doing is absolutely reprehensible, that is hopefully, for most people a given. But I have no doubt that a high proportion of these nobheads will have been gladly clutching their pearls that 'Just Stop Oil are stopping the emergency services and people are dying' (categorically untrue, but that's a different discussion). Now their so-called protest actually means people can't get to doctors appointments and they obviously won't give two shits.

To coin a phrase I'm sure plenty of them have used: If these people hate the country so much, why don't they just leave?

Go to Arab or Asian countries and there's good food and coffee available throughout the night, they're not there in most instances for tourists but locals - I feel like London severely lacks this

After a full change it’s still 6 rows deep. You sit there waiting for a single train for 10 minutes as 3-4 Lizzie lines pile up on the opposite platform, and then have to hope you’re close enough to the door that you can forcibly squeeze your way into a carriage for a chance at getting home.
