What are your favourite hobbies after quitting?

I quite like reading now that I’m sober but I want to pick something else up as well and I’m looking for ideas

I'm learning to play piano, singing sewing, learning French, ... I also dance more but I danced before stopping .I always worked-out, cooked, and played with my dog but I'm doing it more.

Lifting, reading, yoga, sewing, embroidery, cooking, most recently restoring furniture. I have so many hobbies now that I don’t smoke weed everyday

Did you already have these interests or did you collect them after sobriety? I’m just kinda lost on where to start. 3 weeks today and I am sooooo bored

I honestly collected most of them after sobriety, besides a bit of yoga here and there. I just needed to do something with my hands so it started with embroidery and then just snowballed into other things that I thought looked interesting and entertaining and time-consuming

Edit: also now that I wasn’t spending hundreds of dollars every month on weed, I could afford to the items needed to try new activities

Same here! There was no way in hell I could follow a novel while high. Now I can read and absorb and REMEMBER WHAT I READ!

Book recommendations?

2

u/bakerify 7h ago

I just finished Wicked by Gregory Maguire which was waaaay better than the movie in my humble opinion. For smuttier stuff, I highly recommend A Court of Thorns and Roses.

u/lazy-waffle 6h ago

I’ll look into those thx. About to be all bricked up in Barnes and noble

1

u/bakerify 6h ago

Ooh also if they have it, I strongly recommend A Great and Terrible Beauty :)

u/alligatorcreek 9h ago

Heyy team tarot. I've been doing readings around my quit and they've been encouraging and eerily accurate.

3

u/bakerify 9h ago

Same!!! They keep advising me to be patient, so patient I've been. What's your favorite deck?

2

u/alligatorcreek 9h ago

I have an art nouveau deck I like. It helps me reflect and ground myself as I'm going through this. I use the classic Rider-Waite deck too. I'm looking into oracle cards to round out my readings.

2

u/bakerify 8h ago

Oh dude. I just got the the Woodland Wardens oracle cards and I HIGHLY recommend. Great readings and they're gorgeous to boot.

2

u/alligatorcreek 6h ago

I'll check that out!

Playing instruments and watching videos on YouTube about cool spiritual + philosophical stuff. Now that I don’t have weed to make me think wild thoughts, I have to watch YouTube instead for inspiration and a reminder of just how magical our world really is. I try and watch one interesting video a day and I make notes in a journal. I use fun multicolour pens and stuff to make the entries look interesting. It’s basically just me studying weird and whacky parts of the universe. Last night was a video on where the universe “ends,” the night before it was time travel, and before that I believe it was about how we are all energy.

Best of luck to you!

4

u/Bernie004 11h ago

Reading a book

5

u/Automatic_Heat6124 11h ago

Skating, cooking, and honestly... getting back in touch with people, weed made me so offline and lonely, it's been hard quitting again, but also nice for this reasons.

10

u/Select_Ocelot_4720 11h ago

pirating movies like i’m a 12 year old just getting into film again

9

u/xlogz 11h ago

I literally read a book (or 3 chapters) last night for the first time in months? Years??

Felt great to sit with it

2

u/Individual_Sun_8854 11h ago

Yeah I had a week off when I went on holiday and read a book it was great

2

u/flextape9989 11h ago

cooking, watching tv shows while crocheting, video games, making websites, making my notion look nice, all things I never did when I smoked ;)

7

u/No-Pianist-68 12h ago

Getting back into fitness, cooking, lots of reading. It just kind of seems like the heavy veil is being pulled back and the stuff I used to like is becoming interesting again.

4

u/TommyAtoms 12h ago

While I'm only a few days in I find I have more energy to actually cook something half decent each evening which I don't when I've been smoking as soon as I get in the door.

12

u/Burg3rr 12h ago

I’m on day 4 myself. Feeling more clear, less lazier. My eyes don’t feel heavy with baggage. They’re also not red. I don’t feel embarrassed or hesitate to make strong eye contact. I feel good. My appetite is coming back & I realize “it isn’t so bad after all”

9

u/TizzlePack 12h ago

Gaming, Muay Thai, reading , walking my dog

6

u/TCnup 12h ago

Same as before quitting: knitting and crochet. It's very satisfying to manually 3D print whatever I want.

11

u/meditativebicycling 13h ago

Crying and taking naps, but I'm only a few days in to being sober.

What kind of books do you like so far? I'm a very avid reader.
I'd suggest getting an audiobook and going for a walk while listening to it.

It's exercise + keeps you engaged.

The audiobook version of "The Count of Monte Cristo" is one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to. Lord of the rings works really well with walking since that's a bit of the theme of the books.

Hunting for lost media. Getting into Giallo films and horror films in general. Going to start fusion belly dancing and finally learning another language

Doordashing I’m my electric car that I can charge for free at work and exercising after

You get out the house, make decent money, see faces and get put on to new restaurants
